They are a pretty good hotel restaurant and the oysters were delicious during happy hour. Since we were here for many days we tried almost a lot of their items. I would say the oysters are a must, the drinks are delicious and the crab Benedict was so good! I didn't get to try their dinner menu but I wouldn't be surprised if it was also very good. Don't bother unless you are staying at the hotel and have food & beverage credits. We stayed here through the Amex FHR so we got $100 food credits + 20% discount and free breakfast up to $60. Food is good but the Portland food scene is strong so you can get something similar for cheaper and with better service, because the service is terrible here and they do an automatic 22% service charge which is not deserving for the poor service The restaurant has a cozy interior and a beautiful exterior with river views, and we opted indoors as there were mosquitoes outside and we did not bring bug spray. For dinner, we had lobster bisque with sourdough, ahi tostadas, octopus a la plancha, and hazelnut sturgeon with gigantic beans. The lobster bisque was okay, not creamy and felt more like a tomato soup with lobster chunks. Ahi tostadas were incredibly tiny - 3 pieces for $15. The octopus was good but only a few pieces with lots of potatoes inside - again value not there. The sturgeon was delicious but the beans were a bit rough. Decently executed but $44 for this is quite steep. One plus is that we ate right after social hour where hotel guests get free small bites and various wines that is more or less unlimited so that saved a bit of money on alcohol For breakfast, we had a mushroom hash which was very salty. The King Tide omelette was delicious - egg was a bit overcooked but the inside is creamy with a good amount of lobster - which it has to be for $32. We also got lemon ricotta donuts freshly fried which was also delicious. Service is where the reviews tank. If they are charging such high prices, the service must be amazing. However, it felt quite the opposite. During dinner, no one took away plates and so we ended up presented the bill with dirty plates stacked high on the table - very unclassy look. It took a while to flag the server down. For breakfast, most of the tables are empty but they forced us to wait 15 minutes at the sofa which was occupied so we had to awkwardly stand the whole duration. It would have been better if they seated us with menus and give us a heads up they are backed up and would need some time to serve us, so that way we can decide what to order in the meanwhile. Updated experience: Made a reservation (well in advance) for my family to come for Thanksgiving dinner this year. We were seated at a high top which got tricky because we had an infant in tow, a detail I mentioned in my reservation. We all got the Thanksgiving Special of the evening which was a salad followed by roasted turkey, stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, a cheesy potato & a dessert. The meal was sub-par. While everything was visually pretty on the plate the taste left me wanting more. The meat was dry and gravy sparse and somewhat gloopy. The best dish may have been the salad with fresh blue cheese and candied nuts. The lowest moment of our meal was when our waitress attempted to open the wine my father-on-law brought to dinner. It was a vintage wine maybe 15 years old or so, something very rare & special for the holiday occasion. To our horror, the waitress unceremoniously jabbed the wine screw *through the foil* and into the cork! Her movement led us to believe she had no proper wine service training. The cork broke off and half of it got stuck in the neck. The waitress then disappeared with the wine for a time, and came back with the cork out. I sensed some effort in the dessert, a chocolate peppermint budino. However the ginger snap crumble topping tasted sand-like and dried out your mouth. The pudding texture was just ok, I wished it was more velvety, and I longed for more pepperminty flavor. All in all, my family and I wished we'd dined elsewhere for our holiday meal as we were fairly disappointed across the board. My partner and I visited King Tide twice for breakfast during our stay at the Kimpton riverfront hotel. We enjoyed the classic breakfast twice, as well as the ricotta pancakes and smoked salmon eggs benedict. The smoked salmon benedict was a favorite, while the other dishes were just alright. The eggs didn't have much flavor or seasoning, but the breakfast potatoes were flavorful. The nonalcoholic green tea mojito was tasty, but on the pricier side for a zero-proof cocktail without a spirit substitute. We dined outside on the patio during both visits and loved basking in the morning sun. The location on the south waterfront is beautiful, and a great people watching spot. The crowd was pretty light on Saturday morning, but picked up on Sunday. It took us a bit to get our food both times, but the service was excellent. Great call for a pre-show dinner! Took a chance and snuck in for a coupla cocktails and snacks prior to catching a gig at the Keller and super pleased with how it all worked out. The food was fresh, full of flavor and nicely portioned (that Niçoise salad was the bomb), cocktails were interesting, and the river view just outside the windows was a treat. Upscale in tone, with a sorta refined nautical vibe, but still casual in that Portland way. Service was absolutely great all around. One demerit for price; definitely on the high side. We were staying at the Kimpton and I wanted to enjoy the outdoors so I decided to head down to the bar patio to have a glass of wine and enjoy the fresh air. They didn't have Sauvignon Blanc but my server suggested another white wine that had a similar taste. It was good and I was enjoying reading my book and writing a few postcards while I sat. I noticed after the fact, that it was happy hour and I could have enjoyed a more reasonably priced wine. Next time. My server never rushed me and I hung out for about 1.5 hours. King Tide Fish & Shell rates somewhere between three and four stars for me. The food and drink ranged from good to disappointing. Service was good, but the atmosphere was a little weird. If this restaurant is convenient to you, then it's worth checking out. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't go out of my way for it. We were vacationing in Portland and wanted to eat oysters. Someone in our group searched for restaurants that served oysters near us. King Tide Fish & Shell was one of the results, and the pictures and ratings looked good enough. We had a Saturday 8pm dinner reservation for eight people. I booked on OpenTable and got 1,000 points. 1,000-point reservations are rare. They're usually 100 points or nothing. On OpenTable, I could only book for a max of six people. I called the restaurant and they were kind enough to accommodate eight people and still get me 1,000 points. I appreciated that. Thank you to the staff who helped me with that - it was the lady who answered the phone and the manager. Book your reservation using OpenTable and earn dining points which can be used to redeem restaurant discounts, Amazon gift cards, hotel stays, and magazine subscriptions. King Tide Fish & Shell is located inside the Kimpton RiverPlace Hotel, which is situated on the waterfront in downtown Portland. Since we visited at night, we didn't get to see much of the views of the Willamette River and surrounding area. I caught glimpses of the Hawthorne Bridge, lit up, and a walking path from the hotel to down along the river. I'm sure the views are much better during the daytime. King Tide serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Happy hour is 2-5pm daily and brunch is served 8am-2pm on Saturday and Sunday. We parked for free on the street next to/in front of the hotel (S Harbor Way). It was free for us because we parked after 7pm on a Saturday. If you park on S Harbor Way, paid parking is enforced 8am-7pm Monday-Saturday and 1pm-7pm Sunday. There are signs and a kiosk near the parking spaces. You can also pay with the Parking Kitty app (code 61692). When we left the restaurant, I noticed one of the employees was reading a ticket she just got for parking in the same row as us. I felt bad for her since she probably just wanted to go home after her shift. For a Saturday night, the place was pretty dead. That was generally the case for the downtown area we drove through. This wasn't surprising to me since a lot of downtown areas are like this (not as much activity during non-business hours). We pulled up to the hotel valet parking sign, but no valet person came out -- that's why we self-parked on the street. No big deal, but this added to the "weird" atmosphere. When we entered the hotel, there was a kid working at the front desk and no one else to be seen. We found the restaurant and were seated in the indoor dining room by the bar. There were three customers at the bar and one couple seated with us in the dining room. That was it, at the time we arrived. The restaurant looks like it has a nice, spacious patio, but I couldn't really tell since it was dark out. TVs at the bar were playing sports. Some of the TVs were on and some were off. Again, it was just kind of weird, like the place was "half open" or something. In general, though, the restaurant was clean and had an aesthetically-pleasing, modern design to it. I can see the vibe being totally different and better during, say, a busy weekend brunch. The dish was presented beautifully, as were all of the dishes and cocktails, but the fish itself was tough, dry, and unappetizing. I think it was overcooked. The Japanese Garden cocktail wasn't anything to write home about either, but admittedly that might be a personal preference. It tasted medicinal. We enjoyed the Market Oysters and ordered several dozen. The oysters were fresh and high quality. The Netarts were relatively big and meaty while the Carbajals were smaller and more flavorful. Both were deliciously briny. I liked the Netarts more, but you can't go wrong with either. The Taro Chips were unique and yummy - a pleasant surprise. The Wedge Salad and Mussels were both very good. Food is decent but service is pretty horrible. Came in Saturday afternoon like 2 ish with my husband and 2 kids. It wasn't terribly busy most people were sitting outside. Came inside and asked if inside seating was available. The hostess or waitress, named Katharine was either having a bad day or hates her job. Told us it we would have to wait to be seated, but it was how she said it. We've been to restaurants before we know what it's like to go to a busy place and have to wait, so they way she said it just rubbed my husband and I the wrong way. Then after a few minutes waiting my husband mentions that we're leaving if we don't get seated in 5 minutes. He's normally the passive one in the family so when he spoke up I asked what was the matter. He said that Katharine is just drying glasses. That did bother me a little as she could have sat us, then went back to drying the glasses. It would have given us time to look at the menu and decide. Finally a gentleman seats us. We get our menus and are left alone for a while. Finally Katharine comes and takes our order. There another weird interaction while she was taking our order when she's like "only cheese?" When we ordered the burger for our son, and I was so confused like you just want to give us a piece of cheese for this order? Instead of saying did you want all the other things that go with the burger like lettuce, tomato etc... but she was so adamant about just cheese it wasted so much of her and our time. For being a kind of fancy-ish restaurant the service was really lousy, they/she barely checked on us between ordering and the food arriving. And when the food finally arrived I was trying to make room for the dishes and the water container was empty so I moved it out of the way, and she yanked it out of my hands. Cool cool we needed it refilled anyways but please don't snatch it from me, I was trying to help make room. It was such an awkward experience with this one waitress that I don't know if we'll ever go back and we have been there several times before. Our kids aren't rambunctious or noisy, they had their own toys to keep them entertained. So I'm not sure if it's because we had kids with us or what but it left a bad enough taste in our mouths (service) wise that we didn't tip well when we always tip at least 20. On a recent trip, I was easily able to walk here from my hotel (the Marriott Bidwell, also ), and enjoy the walkability of downtown Portland. I sat outside, with a nice view of the river. I started with some nice, local oysters (from the mouth of the Rogue River) that were perfect. The main course was King salmon, that was just a touch too sweet, but otherwise very good. I came here after spending a day at the waterfront and it wasn't a bad spot. The restaurant overlooks the waterfront, offering you a great view as you dine. There's plenty of seating for more intimate dinners or large parties. Service here was alright--we weren't acknowledged by a waiter for a while after seating, and it took a LONG time for food to come out. I ordered the Brussel Sprouts, Steak, and Fish & Chips. Everything was delicious. My favorite was definitely the brussel sprouts that came in dashi and with a poached egg--it was definitely a fun twist on the traditional roasted brussel sprouts that I would get at a restaurant. I thought the fish and chips were good, but a bit overpriced for what it was. Okay : Breakfast sandwich - I wished it had a fresh element as it was all on the oily side (cheese, buns, bacon). Soy latte was good one day and served lukewarm on a different day. The portions are slightly on the smaller side but what you get is of quality. I would definitely come back for the lobster roll. The service wasn't incredible, which wouldn't have bothered me if there wasn't a 20% gratuity being added since we were a group of 6, but I'm hoping it was just an off day. The restaurant has obviously been remodeled more recently than the rest of the hotel, and that's a good thing. It's a nice and inviting space with beautiful views. The service was superb. The food was just okay. The exception was the chicken and waffles, with the chef's wonderful Peruvian background showing through in the chicken and its delicious pepper sauce (the waffle was just okay). Eggs benedict were disappointing, lacking spicing and richness. This was an okay place. I have no idea what the evening food is like, but breakfast does not have us wanting to make the effort to find out. Just okay. The location is great and the restaurant is well designed and comfortable. Our issues are with the food and the service. FOOD: Very good, but waaaaay overpriced for what you get. I fully understand that food prices have gone up, but the portions are so small. The $6 bread service consist of ONE piece of sourdough. ONE? Last I checked a good loaf of sourdough is not $60+ SERVICE: After we ordered our drinks, we had to find the waiter who was standing at the bar waiting for our drinks before he wanted to take our food order. THAT WAS 20 MINUTES. The bartender must be brand new because she was so slow and did not even know how to make a classic martini. It was so full of brine that it was green in color. Great place for some great seafood! Casual upscale vibe on the inside, located inside a hotel, provided a nice atmosphere for dining. Service was just average, didn't have a lot of offers for refills on drinks, check ins were few and far between. Food on the other hand was spectacular. Fish and chips, salmon, lobster roll and prawns tagliatelle were the entrees indulged at the table and everyone enjoyed their dishes. I stayed at the Kimpton RiverPlace Hotel for two nights last month and dined at King Tide quite a few times and had an enjoyable - and tasty - experience each time! It was helpful that I had a couple of dining credits for being a Platinum Elite IHG Rewards Member and booking my hotel through the Chase Travel Portal. For dinner on my first night, I ordered the risotto which was fine. On the following evening, I very much enjoyed a dozen of fresh oysters and the mushroom toast. I also ordered a mocktail that was so refreshing. I must've been on a mushroom kick because the following morning I ordered the mushroom omelette for breakfast! The vanilla latte was so good and I wanted to order three more but refrained. I loved the omelette, particularly the ratio of mushrooms to cheese, really quite nice! My servers, Cassandra and Laina, were very friendly and attentive. I was seated inside but loved the ambiance and view nonetheless. I know there are so many great places to dine in Portland but I would recommend King Tide if you're staying at the Kimpton or nearby! read more

It is written in Ye Olde Yelp Scrolls that: though shall not eat at a restaurant attached to a hotel. Unless you are staying at said hotel and desperate. So shame on me for not leaving when I realized this. Came to King Tide Fish and Shell after booking on Open Table. They said they couldn't sit us at a table until 5 on the dot but we could sit at the bar. We were about 10 minutes early. No problem! We ordered a weak Paloma and weak margarita. Decided to sit outside as that was why I initially booked this spot. Waitress was nice but it has this weird hotel feel. We ordered the Clam Chowder which came with an outrageously large and unnecessary fried tortilla piece? Meh - over priced. Did appreciate the spice. $29 barely oysters with / was that shaved cheese in the middle with the dip?? The size and quality were dismal. We ordered the calamari which wasn't bad! The skewers were $39... for 6 very small pieces of bland cold meat. What a waste of money. The highlight of the meal was the free Chefs Taste for checking in! Now that was delicious. Ooph. Tough visit. Will never blame a server for poor food but between the poor service and poor food, what a regretful experience. Ordered simple eggs Benedict's but when they came out the eggs were hard as a rock. After paying $32 for an eggs Benedict I kindly asked for some new eggs. Not anything else, just for over easy eggs lol. The other waitress glared at her asking where she was going with that food and when she responded that the eggs were clearly well overdone the girl snarled and rolled her eyes while saying no. Whatever. Dismissive coworkers right? No. Our table is ignored the entire time while the table next to us was served perfectly. When the eggs were sent back we were told few minutes. 20 minutes later it comes out while everyone else is done eating. The check comes, she makes it feel like she did such a favor by comping our drinks! Mind you, orange juice. Thanks for the $3 off when it was an $80 cold meal and terrible service. The best part? Tried paying cash and told us we couldn't because we don't stay at the hotel. Maybe follow standard policies and inform customers of that before dining in. Thank you, Kyle, Sarah, and staff for a wonderful evening. Our table was ready when we arrived. We were welcomed with smiles and enthusiasm. Sarah was very attentive to our questions and needs, even finding a bottle of wine I requested that wasn't on the wine list. While they are not set up for group dining in King Tide they accommodated our group of 9 very well. Call in advance to see if they can meet a group dining request. Everyone in my group enjoyed the meal. Killer Japanese Curry Empanada in a puff pastry, brisket, curry, cilantro, and house-made sauces. Made a reservation while visiting for the weekend though one definitely wasn't needed for a Saturday evening. The setting is lovely on the river. We were able to sit outside which was nice. Unfortunately our table had such a huge wobble that I spend the meal holding down one leg with my foot. My companion ordered fish and chips and I got their farm vegetable risotto. The staff was nice but the wait was almost 45 minutes for entrees with only about a dozen tables seated inside and out. Fish was fine. Risotto was overcooked, a weird mix of seemingly leftover vegetable scraps. Non alcoholic drink options were fun. The biggest issue was the flies. Inside and out they were constantly attacking us. Garbage issue? Not a place we'd return to if visiting again but convenient location and pretty view plus pleasant staff so giving it a mid 3 stars. read more

We stopped by while enjoying the waterfront and happened to come during the Happy Hour. We loved all of the appetizers! The calamari was served perfectly crispy and so tasty. The mushroom toast was such a special French-inspired delight! Even the Caesar salad was delicious and paired well with the Rosé wine and truffle fries. The server was very attentive about our food allergies and very friendly. The restaurant is at a very classy hotel and we enjoyed the expansive view. read more
