But the moment those folks poured me a sample of their American Single Malt, I realized I was in the presence of fellow artisans--humans who build with barley the way I build with birch. The aroma? Like sniffing a warm cedar log at sunset, with a hint of orchard fruit drifting downstream. The taste? Smooth as a freshly planed maple branch, with a delicious grain character that made me contemplate abandoning dam construction to pursue professional sipping full-time. The finish? Long, warm, and rich--lingering like the satisfaction of placing the final stick on a perfectly engineered lodge roof. And don't get me started on the place itself. The distillery is polished, welcoming, and smells pleasantly of oak instead of predators. The staff? Delightful! All barley, single malt whiskey. Grain is grown exclusively in the northwest and distilled with the best water - the Bull Run - simply so smooth sip by sip. Nice layout in the tasting room. The young lady who served me up a flight was amazing with her knowledge, which I really appreciated it. Bottoms up! They're doing a restart under new ownership (friends of prior owners) and still fully up and running. WW is my favorite local whiskey brand. I love that I can grab some at the airport on the C concourse, or at the distillery in SE Portland. I arrived in Portland and noticed a stand at the airport for this distillery. They were offering a free whiskey tasting or tour. We drove there straight from the airport. For the tasting, you could choose from whiskey or cocktails. We had the whiskey and added the chocolate pairing. The whiskey was smooth and paired well with the local chocolate selected. The tasting room is small. Reservations are recommended. Parking is free and on site. Everyone was super friendly. read more

I rarely drink alcohol but it was nice to visit this place before the flight. The bartender was very knowledgeable and I liked how she was accommodating when I asked for some substitutions. What's up: For our next stop, we continued our Distillery Tour to Westward Whiskey. I remember seeing this brand around but have never tried it out. Time for that to change! Parking: They have their own private lot right up front. There's also street parking available. Environment: The order counter is located on the right with restrooms located towards the back. This place has both indoor and outdoor seating, but since it was a bit rainy, we stayed indoors. We placed our order at the counter and grabbed a table to enjoy our tasting. They also had a couch on the side to relax at. What was ordered: - Whisky Flight (includes Whiskey Original, Whiskey Pinot Noir Cask, Whiskey Stout Cask, and Whiskey Cask Strength) Yay/Nay/Meh: Yay. We attended the Westward release party on Sunday for Whiskey Club members. What a great event! The hors' d oeuvres were fabulous and so nicely laid out. The welcome cocktail was very nice and then we had the opportunity to taste current and library vintages as well as to purchase on site. What a fun tasting! We took a small group of us there after some meetings, and it was the perfect way to unwind. Friends, husband and I stopped in at the recommendation of a few of our other friends that the whiskey was very good here. At first glance the outdoor seating area was very open, much like the inside with ample seating. We were absolutely impressed in the care the staff provided us during our order and made sure we had everything we needed. With the flight, the staff member sat down and explained a bit about each taster, a little about how each was made and the history of Westward. My wife is a huge whiskey fan so we made a reservation here for a tasting while we were staying in Portland. It was less than a mile from our hotel in the city center so we decided to walk. We took the bridge across the river but man did things get sketchy once we got across. It's kind of in a sketchy warehouse district with lots of homeless camps. My wife was really nervous especially as it was getting dark. Next time we would drive as there was plenty of parking in their lot. The Bottom Line: PDX is more than just Beervana, there's a great whiskey scene in town too and the folks at Westward provides a flagship tasting experience. On my latest trip to rose city, I wanted to check out Portland's "Distillery Row." The city is just waking up from COVID and even though I didn't have an appointment, the staff there were so welcoming and told me to just come on down after I inquired about a visit over the phone. Once there their expert staff led us through a wonderful tasting through Westward's selection and did a great job telling us their story and their roots in American Ale. The flight came with snacks and at the end the bartender gave us a special complementary taste of one of their rarest bottles. What a treat! The only thing that would have made the experience even better would be the opportunity to get a tour around the place. Alas I'll have to make a return visit to see where it's all made. Pro Tip: Yes their facility is near the tracks and it is a bit noisy when it comes through. My party didn't mind too much but something to be aware of if you are sitting outside. read more

I went with the whiskey tasting. It isn't the cheapest tasting I've done but definitely one with a lot of quality. I enjoyed them all but the the Cask Strength was by far the best. Amazing flavor and sneaky strong. I was bummed they didn't ship to CA and for $120 a bottle I didn't want to risk it breaking. Lucky enough Lissa G found one of their stores in the airport and I was able to pick up a bottle and carry it on. Also a note for out of towners...the prices are fixed for the bottles in Oregon so the airport was the same price as at the distillery. read more
