Came because of the Chicken Tikka Masala reviews and it didn't disappoint. We walked in and our senses were lovingly welcomed by fresh tandoori filling the air, great start. Leanne (sp?) greeted us at the counter and it seemed like her soul's desire was to make our experience at this restaurant the best it could possibly be, she is a HUGE asset to this restaurant and I hope her employers realize it. As far as ambience, sadly a 2/5. Typical fast food Uni style take out place with a few mismatched tables thrown in. Cost? It is true it is v. expensive but as previously reported the portions are larger than normal - HOWEVER the main negative is the rice isn't included if you get Naan and should you choose Garlic Naan, there's an additional up charge for that too. Also I have to say for these prices which are more than a regular restaurant, it seems overly cheap to eat on polystyrene plates & cups with plastic flatware and be served in plastic take out tubs. Overall it was worth it as you can definitely get a few meals out of the large size but the odd thing was the masala was more like a traditionally British Indian's Masala compared to US Indian's Masala - more on the tomato side compared to the spice side. It is also mild by regular Indian standards so if you like reg hot go with Extra Spicy. If you like 'Indian hot' you may be out of luck. read more

Turns out Gainesville is pretty quiet over the summer and places are slow/have more limited hours. I originally wanted to try a different place a block or two away but it was closed for this reason. Not wanting to have a heavy meal, we stopped here figuring we could grab a bite before a full day of dance workshops nearby. I ordered a kebab wrap and my friend got some plate that had hummus, a salad, naan, and some grapeleaves. Initially we thought we would eat in because half of our order was cold (i.e. not needing much prep) and the other half was simple. Twenty minutes later we asked to change our dine-in to a to-go order for fear of running late. When we paid, I asked the girl if she could break my $20 (My meal was under $10) and she said she wasn't sure she had change. How is that even possible? After waiting some more in their dining room (it's terribly uninviting and sterile... felt like it was one of those places people -only- do to-go orders from), we were finally handed our bags. Right as my friend grabbed hers, the roof leak dripped on her bag (there were plastic bins all over the counter catching water), but thankfully everything was wrapped up tightly. So we opened our bags and looking at it, I was visually underwhelmed. Yeah my wrap was a decent size, but the lettuce was old iceberg, and the rest of the veggies looked kind of funky. The salad on my friend's dish was old iceberg, and her bit of tomato was mostly the inedible center. We decided it was a lost cause. Overall my sandwich was okay. Nothing terrible, but not great either. The meat and bread were good, but the veggies could have been fresher for sure. I ended up ordering Veggies Samosa, because they ran out chicken samosa. I also ordered Chicken Mahkini and my friend ordered the Chicken Tikka Massala and Gulab Majun for dessert. Rating food: Chicken Makhini: chicken cooked in herb and spices with a butter sauce on top. - Overall the chicken was good. But I didn't like their sauce.. It was very tomatoes taste.. it overpowered their herbs and seasoning..... But the quality of the dish was not bad at all. White meat chicken and fresh sauce. Samosa are like Indian empanadas with potatoes and veggies in it but not they are not crispy like Empanadas- these samosas seemed to be sitting there out there all day.. then it was reheated by re-frying it.. I didnt like that... The taste was too bland and spicy.... Chicken Tikka Massala is chicken grilled on skewed then marinated on a tikka massala sauce.- To be honest.... this is like SAME exact tomato based sauce like the Mahkini.. except a bit more garlic and stronger spices.. but the tomatoes is heavier.... Gulab Majun is a sweet round donut dipped in a syrup sauce. - too sweet... I recommend eating it if you want to have a heart attack after 30 mins. Overall the food was not bad..... The dishes we ordered had alot sauce. But the rice that they give you, is not enough. I ended up ordering more. SO advice! Called to see if order is ready to pick-up, lady on the phone noted that there's no order on your name. Once we open to eat at home, mix tandoori platter was so dry with no taste, chicken karahi with bones chicken with green peppers and raw onions. I called to complain and lady on the phone said this how the chef makes it, and said don't order anything from here next time. AND SHE HANGED UP ON ME. My favorite place for Indian cuisine in all of Gainesville. They cook everything to order so it's hot and succulent. Also their naan is also made in a cool stone cooker that is unique to the restaurant. Awesome and super fast. It's a little pricey but the portions are perfect for sharing so the price is really relative. I totally recommend this place. The decor is lacking and kind of looks like a hole in the wall but the food is so good that I can bypass this all the time. I've tried a few things but my favorite is the butter chicken (makhani chicken). It's so creamy and delicious. Very hearty and filling. I live pretty close to kabab house and so I've basically tried a large variety of dishes from this restaurant. The owners very nice and very accomodating. I used to come to the Govinda House here but I'm glad Kabab House took over. Sooooo from my experience, you gotta ask for the spicy dishes. Their Mattar, Vindaloo, Palak and Korma stuff. When I tried their other stuff its mediocre if its not spicy. But when you ask for the dish to be spicy, it makes everything taste good in my opinion. Trust me, if I wasn't insanely hungry and completely unwilling to drive I certainly wouldn't have paid that price. Regardless, the price/delivery isn't the reason for the low rating. The chicken korma was mediocre at best. Usually, chicken korma is served with rice but not with this business....no rice. Seasoned well, but the korma was missing the YUM in taste appeal. I felt that it was less of a yum and more of a DUD. There was 3 chunks of chicken and a whole ton of sauce. I had a half bowl of leftover piping hot sauce but no chicken along with the naan. Definitely best Indian food in Gainesville. Garlic naan is really good. But often I found their dish to be microwaved because it's extraordinarily hot (that can't be possible from cooking on oven). But all the food taste really good. PS: Once they served us chicken biriyani despite our actual mutton biriyani order. Moreover there was blood in the chicken leg. After that time we used to avoid the place. But recently we ordered/ visited this place a few times. And it was really good. Maybe it just one time fault, (though it's a big fault). The food here is BEYOND delicious. Everything we ordered was piping hot, fresh, and flavorful. The veggie samoosas were creamy, well spiced, golden brown. For the Kabab Wrap I got, the naan was light and fluffy, the meat was SO DELICIOUS (spicy, perfectly cooked) and went well with the dark sauce that came on the side and crunchy veggies in the wrap. The fries were fresh and hot. I also tried one of the imported canned sodas, which was Apple flavored. Very interesting, tasted kinda like apple candy and ginger ale. While the decor wasn't impressive, it doesn't matter because the food and service (the cashier was friendly and knowledgable) was excellent. AMAZING!! I always use to drive by the Kabab House on University but never actually went. They have a new location on 34th street which is closer to where we live so we decided to try it out. Best decision ever. Service: Exceptional. The girl that took care of us was super sweet! We had no clue how to order and she recommended the best beginner dishes so we got: Chicken Masala and Paneer Makhani (if you're vegetarian which I am). Absolutely amazing and delicious. We went in for a second time today and we still got exceptional service and amazing food. The owner was there to greet us this time and he is amazing and so sweet as well. The food was alright. My grandmother came into town and I ordered two Chicken Tikka Masala and a pita platter. We are from New York and eat Indian food almost once a week and we both would have like some more spices. It was a tad bit blan in our opinion. So I went to Kabab house and was very disappointed with the food. I ordered a large order of the Chicken Tikka Masala. For being a large order and being really expensive you do not get very much chicken. The Masala sauce had very little taste to it. Also, when you read the menu you think it comes with both rice and naan but that is far from true. You get rice or naan. The rice was just normal white rice pretty much, not much taste to it. I think that the food was just tasteless and you do not get much meat in your dish. I am not sure if I just came on an off day but I was highly disappointed in what I got. I love Indian food but this place just does not offer what you would think. Also, it is very expensive. For a large order it was $15.99. WOW that is a lot and its not that much food. I wonder how little the regular is because the large unfortunately is not very much. The Naan was pretty good, but the reason you come to a place like this is the main dishes. I think they dropped the ball and I cannot recommend going to this place. The food here is amazing!! I got the Chana Masala (vegan) and was pleasantly surprised by the flavor!! The only downside to my experience was the long wait and the rude service. I called ahead for pickup and they told me the wait was 15 mins. I arrived after 20 minutes. They said that the food would be another 10 minutes and insisted that it would've been ready if we came later since he "said it would be 15 minutes." The food, however, definitely made up for the bad experience with the service. If I could give it a zero I would. Ordered chicken tandoori. Chicken was very under cooked. I ate the few pieces that were cooked well and took the rest to the lady working as I wanted to just bring it to her attention. She stared at me as if I was stupid and replied that if the chicken was raw it would be red..... Those of us who cook know that chicken can very well be under cooked and unedible and still be white. I wasn't expecting a free meal I just wanted to bring to her attention and she just stood there as if they didnt just undercook more than half my meal. Very impolite. Bad experience The food wasn't very good and it is rather expensive but that was the start of the problems The cashier did not know what she was doing, I asked for a simple change and she had no idea how to do it. I told her to forget it but she insisted she could do it. Then when she rung it up I noticed the amount was too high by about 2.50 I said as much, but because it was rung up the machine had no way to exit it. Basically their service was ground to a halt unless I paid and theh promised they would resolve it. So I did Then the manager came out and said it was off by only .50 (wrong) and asked me to just accept it. I did, and that is the point I decided to leave this review instead. The food I've had is good, however the service is inconsistent at best. I've tipped nearly everytime I go, so hopefully the employees might associate taking care of me with repayment. A girl who works the front desk likes to put customers on hold when she can't handle a line of one customer. Finally, they've got everything pretty much in check. For a long time, I found both the service (mainly at the hands of one worker who is no longer there) and the food quite inconsistent, but now they appear to have things under control. The main guy who works there--a young, friendly, fellow with glasses who is probably a co-owner--does a great job and clearly cares about his customers being content with their food. They have also added some new menu items and thus now offer a very robust assortment of choices. The rice and naan alike are quite good and the meat choices include beef, chicken, lamb and goat, staying true to the Pakistani roots of Kabab House plus some dishes like various tikkas that cater to an Indian or Indian-influenced tradition. The atmosphere still could be impoved upon, however, at least the horrible red carpet is now gone and replaced with a more pragmatic linoleum flooring. I've reviewed Kabab House more times than any other business on Yelp and that's been because I want my review to be as accurate as possible, and their quality for a time kept going back and forth, throwing curve balls and ample surprises both good and bad. Now, they're at a point I feel fully adroit in giving them four stars. The prices may seem high, but their portions are quite large so they are, in my view, very fair. read more

The food is tasty. I don't mess around in an Indian restaurant and order things like wraps and fries. When in rome, well you know. Service is a bit slower than my liking. Atmosphere sucks, it has a take out feel. But the place does serve the best indian food in town. Prices do run high, so my suggestion is that you bring some friends, the brown kind if you know any, because that will only serve to make the experience better. (Like they'd never let you order a wrap... or let them charge you for a little sauce) Indian culture is very friendly, and its very cheap, so talk it up and always try to get a better deal. Remember, its not rude, it's expected. I am Indian and have to say that this is one of my favorite places to eat (Indian Cuisine can take a hike). Why do I say this? Try the food! It is amazing. The goat, chicken and naan are just plain awesome... but you might have stomach troubles after you eat... but that is what really good Indian food does to you. Extremely disappointed with that. The naan was good. The mixed vegetables (korma) was also pretty good, so two stars for that. To Kabab House, PLEASE fix your tandoori chicken! So, based on the previous reviews, my first time visit today was cautious - and: It was mostly win. I got there about 5 minutes before my bud who suggested we do lunch here - he's been many times and liked it. So, I went to the counter to get a menu, and the -very- helpful guy there made a point of asking if I had been there before. With a "No" he then (unprompted) took the time to define how the menu was set up, and to describe the levels of hotness available. A very nice touch I thought. I sat down and decided on the Chicken Tikka Masala - (9.99) with the naan as side. My bud ordered the goat korma with the basamati rice. I went for 'spicy but so I can still taste the chicken' which was great - I could have gone a touch hotter - next time I'll order "American medium" based on a follow up conversation. My friend ordered "American spicy" which I found quite tasty - and I'm not a fan of the spices very hot. The basamati rice was nicely done too. The naan was delish. Apparently you can order 'Indian Spicy" as well - the counter guy said that will really get your attention. Portions: There was a LOT of sauce in the bowl, but still, I only ate half of the chicken and all the naan soaking up that delicious sauce. The ammount of chicken was more than I could eat. Got an order of rice to take home with the other half of my order. I think they only have once size of bowl, so some meals may seem 'smallish' as a result - and they fill up space with extra sauce. The goat dish did have about 30% more protein by volume (visual estimate) in the portion, but given the number of bones, it kind of makes sense. Verdict: I'd give the place 3.5 stars, but as usual, rounding up to 4. They lose points for price/atmosphere. If I was getting take out, I'd rate it a bigger win, because my dining room has way more ambiance than this space. The room screams "cheap take out pizza joint" while the menu pricing says "mid level indian bistro". There is a disconnect there that could be resolved with some sheers, upgraded lighting and some paint. They don't need to add table service, but they do need to do something to that interior to make it match the menu a little better. Will I go back? Yep. But I'll probably wait for a date and get takeout for two - and enjoy the company of a lovely companion at home, where the candles and music never fail to make the food taste better. read more
