Yellow rice, pinto beans, curry chicken, yucca, and coleslaw
    Erich C.

There are two doors to this fine restaurant, but both have that home-cooked smell that smacks you in the nose, when you open them! The smell is enough to make you want to eat and take a nap. I followed the easy-to-understand board. First pick which rice you want, which type of bean, and then which type of protein, sides, etc. If you can't get it, just go to the line, and a friendly server will explain it and help. I got the big container to-go, and I am glad I did; it's two good meals!! The curry chicken was cooked to PER FEC TION!!!!!!!!! So tender and juicy, and the curry flavor was on point, and the rice was from a dream! I mean this food is amazing!! You know so much love was put into it!! I am def coming back to get a different combo!! Also, the sweet tea is delicious and won't give you cavities before you hit the door!

The food and service is great! Unfortunately I didn't get pictures of everyone's food but everyone said they really enjoyed it! I had the curry chicken with yellow rice and black beans with a side of fried plantains and some yucca fries! my sister had the ox tail and said it was so tender she was licking her fingers to get all the sauce. My other sister had the Mojo pork and said it was delicious but could have benefited from some sauce as it was just a bit dry but still very tasty. All that said don't let the curbside or lack of curbside appeal discourage you from trying this great food! The place definitely could use a facelift and it would go to the next level.

Very very good food. Good size portions. Too bad we are on vacation and don't live close by.

This place is exactly what yelp is all about. Abuela's is a true hidden gem and this place serves the best Columbia food in all of Gainesville. When you come you're greeted by an employee behind the counter and create your own bowl with whatever you'd like. The dining area is full of seating and a play area for the kiddos too. When it comes time to order I personally recommend coming in on Tuesday's or Friday's and trying their delicious oxtail. Today I came in and had their Ropa Vieja (shredded beef) and I get it every time I come in and they don't have the oxtail. Outstanding! Be sure to ask for half and half on the yuca fry's and plantains too so you can try both and discover which ones are your favorite. Their coconut rice is also killer! If you end up feeling like you might have room for dessert, hard to believe you would cause the portions are huge, be sure to order one of their tres leche cakes from the cold case. I usually order one and take it home to eat after my food coma.

My absolute favorite restaurant in Gainesville that I recommend to everyone who asks! The portion is amazing + the food is really delicious that gives you such a warm feeling when eating. The lunch special is great when I can catch the timing, but I'd pay any price for how good the food is! It's really a hidden gem in Gainesville! The staff is always nice and accommodating. The environment of the restaurant really does feel very homey and comfortable.

No frills amazing Columbian food. Seriously food like your abuela would make. The coconut rice is so good that you will be sad that you can't fit more in your belly. Together with the black beans it makes a beautiful meal. Top it off with platanos/maduros for a sweet finish.

Moro rice, red beans, picadillo, fried yuca

Finally got a chance to visit Abuela's and it was everything I had heard and more. The food was absolutely wonderful and I'm sad I don't live closer to it. I had the lunch bowl with moro rice, picadillo, red beans, and fried yuca. They were out of some stuff like sweet plantains, so if you want the full set of options, come early. The lunch prices are pretty good too for the amount of food you get, I was full by the end of my meal.

THE best Cuban sandwich in Gainesville. That's all you need to know! It's called abuela's for a reason. Huge portions!

It's the kind of dish you take one bite of and immediately plot your next visit. And the side dishes...oh my goodness. Usually you have a "favorite" side and a "meh" side, but here, every single one was a star in its own right. Creamy, vibrant, tangy, savory, each had its own personality and every bite made me do a little happy dance. Honestly, it's rare to find a place where the sides are just as memorable as the main course, but Tinker nails it. The atmosphere was warm, the service was wonderful, and by the end of the meal everyone basically grinning like a kid at their birthday party. The Tres Leche cake was insanely good! If you haven't been yet, go. And if you have you already know you're overdue for another plate! It was really that good!

I've driven by many times and through the smoked glass it looked like chairs or something else was stored behind it and I though it had closed. The service was very good, prompt but not over attentive! The selection of Beers was outstanding! I had a starter of what was billed as Chupe De Pollo, (chicken chowder), it had very thick broth and was chocked full of chicken. Chicken breast was used and although there was a lot it was very dry and the broth was more like a heavy veloute. It also did not have much flavor. I won't be ordering that a again. My wife and I had Empanadas, mine was shredded beef and hers shredded chicken. I could have used a bit more sauce for dipping. The shell was quite crisp but not greasy. But all and all it was good. Our friend had the vegetarian arepas and let me taste some, it was quite good. She finished the whole dish! We also shared the loaded fries which came out hot with an interesting sauce drizzled over it. We didn't have the bacon on it as our friend is vegetarian. That would have made it even better for me. All in all it was a fun experience and we'll be going back.

I'm from Miami where good Latin food is basically on every corner fighting for your attention so my expectations were HIGH. I decided to gamble on DoorDash and stumbled across this Colombian spot. Dear Jesus what have I been missing? First, I ordered the tostones with chicharrón and let me tell you those pork pieces were crunching louder than my knees getting out of bed in the morning. Absolutely amazing. Then came the breakfast plate with rice and beans, scrambled eggs, and steak. That steak was so good I almost stood up in my hotel room and started singing romantic Spanish ballads to the container. At this point, I'm not even ashamed to admit I'm probably ordering from this same place again tomorrow and maybe the next day too while I'm here working. It was a cold day and we were looking forward to some Colombian cuisine which was new to us. The place was easy to overlook as the signage didn't really stand out. And more construction is ongoing along Hwy 301 further obscuring visibility into this location. In any case, this is not a "sit down" restaurant as we had to place our order before sitting down. We previously checked out the menu online so we pretty much knew what we wanted to order. I ordered the Paisa Bowl ($17) and my wife tried their Steak and Papas bowl ($20). We also ordered French fries ($3.50) and a can of Coke Zero ($2.50). I thought service was a tad slow (there were maybe 5 tables occupied including us) but we were served our lunch soon enough. Our first impressions were good presentation but the portions were meager. The fried pork belly pieces were nice and crunchy but there weren't enough of them. The ground beef had good flavors and I liked the fried egg over the rice and beans. My wife liked the flavor of the beef, although a bit fatty for her taste, but found the potatoes a bit dry and wished they were French fries instead. Speaking of French fries, it was served with this savory dipping sauce but again, the serving portion was miserly. My wife thought the guacamole was nice and fresh, making it the best part of her meal. All in all, we came away liking the flavors but thinking the value and portions were lacking. Service was a bit detached as well. Lunch for 2 with tip came out to just over $51.
