This was a pleasant surprise for me and my hubby. We moved to the area 2 years ago and haven't been able to find decent Indian food. We were out at Shands for an appointment and found this restaurant on Yelp. It's not a fancy restaurant, more like a casual/comfort spot. The staff was super friendly and service was fast. We ordered Vegetable Samosas as an appetizer and they were huge and crispy with a nice amount of spice. The chutney that came with it was delicious. My husband had Butter Chicken and I had Chicken Tikka Masala. They're both similar dishes, except the Butter Chicken has cream in it and the Tikka is generally a bit spicy (theirs is mild). We ordered the Lunch portion and it was plenty of food. It comes with 1 side - either basmati rice or fresh Naan. I had the rice and he had the Naan. If you want to mix your dish and sauce with the rice - that's' a good way to go. My husband opted for using the bread to sweep up every last bit of sauce in his and loved it. If you order a dinner portion, you get 2 sides. I believe you can get a salad also, but that may only be with dinner (not sure). They also have a lunch buffet. We came around 4pm. They also have various non-alcoholic drinks. Food comes out in little metal pans (really kept it hot) and they give you plastic dishes for serving. The appetizers and bread came in little cardboard baskets (like you get at some places for fries). We were both full when we left. Next time I'm in Gainesville, I'll definitely be back. First time here and we are not disappointed at all. We ordered biryani shrimp, lamb Korma, malai kofta and goat vindaloo. All were delicious. Regular size had generous serving enough for 3 people. In Gainesville only for one night. I'm sooo glad we chose to eat here for dinner. Everything we had was incredibly delicious! We ordered everything spicy, and it was the perfect amount of spice that we like. We ordered chicken samosa, large spicy butter chicken, regular sized spicy chicken Kudasai, and spicy tandoori chicken & 3 orders of naan. I didn't get a picture of the Tandoori Chicken before we tore it up, but it was one of the best tandoori I've had! We loved all of the food that we ordered. A friend of mine used to frequent Kabab house for years and invited me to lunch after realizing they had moved to their new 34th st location. I ordered Butter chicken w/ Garlic naan, and my friend and I shared an order of samosas. In terms of flavor, this is the best I've tasted in the area. The pricing is fair I would say, but could be borderline pricey for a more casual style restaurant. I realize tonight that I've never had Indian food in Gainesville. Of the 3 places listed. This was the only one that was open. It was disappointing. It looks like it's primarily a takeout business. There were booths and a few stools at a snack bar. But all of the traffic was to go. I placed my order at the counter and started to pay, they asked if I wanted to add a tip to the order. Odd practice, considering I had to stand there and look at the menu and then give them my order before I could sit down, and had not gotten any kind of service whatsoever yet. While I was waiting, someone came to my table, showed me a receipt for somebody else's order and asked me if this was what I ordered. So I had to re-order my meal. I ordered the chicken tikka masala with play naan. When the food arrived it looked promising, but was not that good. The chicken was cooked well not over cooked. But the chicken was grizzly. I was quite disappointed with Kabab House. The overall set up was not very hygienic and well organized. The cashier was very disorganized, and there was no designation of a line or situation to place your order. The tables were not very clean, and I saw some bugs flying around. The utensils were all mostly styrofoam or plastics, and I think this was their tradeoff for single use? Most importantly, the food wasn't authentic at all. It was overly seasoned with a strong bitter overlay. For something that tasted so overpowering, there was sparsely any herb flavours. I got the chicken tikka masala, and the chicken was either chewy or kind of old-textured. The inconsistency and lack of juicy flavor was pretty disappointing to me. The naan was okay. Overall, not a place I'd recommend for authentic tasting food. It was pretty disappointing. read more

I thought maybe the new location would be better. Sufficed to say, it is not. I have ordered the chicken tiki masala, which was ok, but somehow lacking flavor. I thought that strange since it's like a curry. The most egregious error was there was a HAIR in lamb kabob wrap. Like, seemingly baked into the naan as it was attached to it. I had eaten a few bites when I found it. The few bites I had of the sandwich were not good at all. The lamb was skimpy, underseasoned, and it was drowning in greasy iceberg lettuce. We went to Kabob House on 34th Street near Archer Rd before our errand at Aquatropics... This place ended up being way more than a quick bite and an afterthought! The food was some of the middle eastern food we've had, and came in at a great price point! We had the tandoori chicken and mixed tandoori grill. The meat was flavorful and tender and the rice was flawless! Everything was delicious separately and together. The lamb especially stood out because it was tender and wasn't gamey. Service was a tad slow given we were the only ones in the entire restaurant but every place seems shorthanded these days and that's forgivable. We'll be back... and sampling different menu items. Kabab house is the cheap Indian food cuisine I have been searching for! I've been craving chicken masala and butter chicken but I wasn't able to find any places that were in my budget. This place has great portions, leaving me full. If you're a UF or Santa Fe student, ask them for the student code and they'll give you a free side of Naan with your dish. The chicken masala combined with the basmati rice and naan were delicious! I would recommend the butter chicken if you want a more creamier version of the chicken masala. I've gotten the butter chicken and lamb kebab from them and found them to be well made. However, I will say the lamb kebab could be more tender and the portions compared to one of the other local Indian restaurants in the are smaller. They had shut it down early in the day because not enough people were getting it. The cashier was very nice though. He offered us all free soft drinks because he wasn't able to offer us the buffet. The chicken tikka masala I ended up ordering wasn't bad. It was a little on the spicy side, but it was very filling since it came with the rice and naan. In terms of flavor, it was aromatic and flavorful, and the naan that came with it was warm and fluffy. The cashier was so patient as my eyes wandered the menu and I ended up ordering the same exact meal that my friend ordered minutes earlier lol. We took a seat at one of the many tables and enjoyed watching the cars from the window as we waited for our food. Only thing that ruined that? Flies. I don't think anyone likes flies, but I hate them while inside and waiting for my food. But it is Summer in Florida. I'm assuming that a window had to be open or something. A turn-off yes, but for whatever reason, I'm not fretting lol. In about 10-15 minutes, a young woman approached our table with two trays full of our meals. When I say that they don't skimp! We each had 4 pieces of delicious Naan, a bowl full of rice and a hefty bowl of Tikki Masala. The meal was hot, fresh and delicious! Ordered Paneer Masala and Lamb vindaloo today. Starting with lamb vindaloo: the pieces of meat were hard and chewy. Clearly not fresh. Clearly not cooked at the same time with the stew. Very disappointing. The taste of meat was very bad; clearly have been cooked and kept in fridge for a long time and then added to stew. Paneer masala: mediocre. Not very tasty. It needed more time to cook. Rice: Smell of rice says it is old. It smelt funky, as if stayed in humid stock for a long time. Sometimes you can get rid of the smell by using a little of coconut milk or some garlic prior to cooking, but apparently the chief didn't care! The cost for each dish (small size) was $13-$14 which is pricy considering the low quality. Compared to other Indian restaurants in town, it is towards the lower end.
