Nice open and bright restaurant with beautiful views inside the Andaz hotel. Ate here twice, once for dinner and once for the breakfast buffet. Both visits were in early September and both times we sat on the outdoor patio which overlooks the main pools and the ocean. Both meals were expensive but dinner seemed to be more upscale. The breakfast buffet was about $48.00 pp and had an nice selection of food and drinks to choose from. As a vegetarian, I was able to stuff myself. The fruit bar included exotic fruits like dragon fruit and Lilikoi (passion fruit). Other areas included the omelette bar, drinks counter with wellness shots, bread/bakery item counter, and standard breakfast item area. The dinner menu was divided into 5 areas: Makai,Classics, the Good Taste Series, Upcountry Farm, and Butcher's Block; each having 3 selections to choose. Vegetarians had 3 options: Black Sesame Noodles, Watermelon Salad, and Roasted Eggplant. We had the Watermelon Salad, the Roasted Eggplant, the Maui Caught Fish, and 2 Melville wines. The food was brought out in a timely manner and was beautifully plated. The eggplant and fish were delicious. The watermelon was good but probably overpriced at $16.00 for a slice of watermelon. Service was very good on both occasions. Our servers were friendly and attentive. Overall, we enjoyed dining here. For breakfast, it rated a 4.3. For dinner, it earned a 4.7. Solid four stars. We didn't want to leave the Andaz resort so came here for dinner. The waitress forgot to bring our drink order until about fifteen minutes later when we reminded her and she admitted to forgetting. The drinks ended up coming out the same time as our food. I thought this was a family share but the portions didn't seem that huge. My husband and I split two entrees -the fried chicken and mushroom risotto and we finished it all. I found the fried chicken to be a little dry and needing more salt but the pineapple salsa with it and cornbread was delicious. Solid four stars overall. The mushroom risotto was so good and warmed my heart. The runny egg was cooked perfectly and created a nice creamy risotto. It was very flavorful, creamy, and you could actually taste the mushrooms. It was my favorite. Despite loving the risotto, the price is pretty steep at almost $40. But I guess that's what you'd expect at a restaurant at the Andaz. read more

Scallops were perfectly sourced and cooked - sweet and supple - and were paired with beets. An interesting but successful flavor combination. The entrees were fantastic, though I would say the appetizers were the highlight of my meal. I highly recommend the buttermilk fried chicken - definitely not your average deep fried bird. Despite being extremely full, we managed to order the chocolate rum cake which was absolutely divine. Extremely moist and rich - paired beautifully with the salty macadamia crumble. In our last visit for my sister's graduation, the hostess kindly gave us a beautiful full ocean view. The food and service were excellent. However, I feel they employ a billing practice that should be made clear. My wife and I are residents and asked for their 20% kama'aina. When the bill arrived, there was an 18% 'service charge' they add if you use kama'aina. I did not see this on their website or menu and the server neglected to tell mention it when we requested kama'aina. So the discount is actually 2%, not 20%. If you do not pay attention to your bill and add a tip, you are paying an additional 18% tip. Feels a bit deceptive, but maybe it's just me. read more

Came for valentines. Changed our previous plans to come here. Reservation was 7:30. Seated after 8. Waiter was so rude. Hardly saw him. Wife tried ordering a cocktail and he abruptly turned and walked away while she was mid sentence before she could complete her order. Had a business dinner reservations here and we were seated quickly at a nice ocean view seat. I started with a traditional mai tai which tastes so much better in Hawaii. I was torn by the two fish choices. One was mahi mahi and the other choice was ahi. I only eat tuna if it is raw because to me, even the slightest searing makes it taste like canned tuna. The dish was delicious and I finished off the evening with a mango sorbet. I should be ashamed of myself for not reviewing Ka'ana kitchen sooner. My wife and I enjoyed quite a few meals here in 2019 celebrating my birthday. We have come back to the island to celebrate our sons birthday and couldn't miss an opportunity to have dinner here again. Breakfast or dinner you cannot miss on anything the restaurant offers. For our second time around I had the fresh catch of the day (mahi mahi), my wife had their delicious fried chicken and my in-laws each ordered the wagyu steak small plates. Everything was cooked to perfection, drinks amazing and service top notch. I don't know if many visitors know about the kitchen but if you find yourself near the Andaz this is a must eat! My husband and I tried a few different restaurants while we were in Maui this trip: Morimoto (3 stars), Ferraros (4 stars), Gather (4 stars), The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea (4 stars), KO (3.5 stars), and Ka'ana Kitchen (5 stars). This was our first time at Ka'ana Kitchen, and it was a pretty decent experience. We mentioned on our reservation and to the hostess that this was our honeymoon, but it was never acknowledged by our server the entire night (which isn't a huge deal, just wanted to note that if you're looking to celebrate a special occasion, this might not be your best bet). There were a lot of open tables available, but we were seated at a table where the sun was absolutely blinding (and had to wear sunglasses for the majority of our dinner - which was odd). Our server wasn't really friendly or super attentive - he was just okay. The food was nice, and I really enjoyed my risotto (which is what pushed this into 4-star territory for me), but our appetizer, drinks and dessert were forgettable and overpriced for what they were. This wasn't the worst dinner ever, but wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it - there are much better options in Maui. read more

The watermelon salad is just a piece of watermelon with cheese and nuts on top and the watermelon is not even fresh. The octopus appetizer is just 5 pieces of sliced smaller octopus and salad. We had a buffet breakfast for two included in our stay at the Andaz so we dined at Ka'ana twice while we were here. They change up the menu a little bit every day so you don't get tired of eating the same thing. They also have a pretty good assortment of things to snack on, including fried rice, chow mein, steamed buns, frittata, potatoes, croque monsieur, and a peanut butter crepe just to name a few. They also have a full salad and fruit bar as well as a variety of pastries to choose from. If you're not in the mood for a buffet, you can also choose to order something off their menu. They have a few different kinds of juices as well to wash everything down with - I really liked the kale, cucumber, apple juice. It's a nice little detox to start your day with if you've gone a little too hard the night before. The service here is excellent, but why wouldn't it be? Each server automatically gets an 18% gratuity that is added onto your bill. For a breakfast that cost $50 per person, they're getting $18 off the bat just for pouring you a cup of coffee and a water. read more

I am so glad we were able to call in and make last minute reservations for dinner here our second night in Maui. The ambience, food and service was top-notch. My friends and I ordered a bunch of different dishes to share and a few rounds of drinks. We definitely enjoyed the appetizers more than the entrees. Here is what we ordered: Appetizers: -Ahi Belly - 5/5: GET THIS! Fatty pieces of ahi belly was buttery and oh so delicious! -Hanger Steak - 4/5: Tender steak, it reminds me of bo tai chanh (Vietnamse beef salad) -Kona Clams - 3/5: Sweet clams but the sauce had too much fish sauce aftertaste. -Grilled Octopus - 4/5: Tender pieces of octopus. I love the watercress salad that was pair with it and the cheese. Entrée: -Ali'i Mushroom Risotto - 2/5: Too rich and creamy. I'm glad we shard this dish because after two I was over it. -Lobster Creole - 3/5: The tomato sauce was good but I didn't like the rainbow chard in the dish. - Wagyu Striploin - 3/5: The tater tot was good but I don't remember the steak. Dessert: -Sticky Rice Panna Cotta - 4/5: Pretty platting! The sticky rice was not sweet whatsoever but those lime gel were tasty. -Coconut Sundae - 2/5 - I didn't like the ice cream or the chocolate sauce. -Calamansi Lime Tart 3/5: The tart was ok, the almond crunch was good! Hubby gets bonus brownie points for finding and booking reservations at this place - I didn't even know it existed! The setting at the Andaz is stunning. Walking the approach to the lobby reminded me of the Conrad on Bali. If you are given a choice of table, you should sit outside overlooking the pool and ocean - the sunset is spectacular. Service at the beginning of our meal was superb - attentive yet unobtrusive. Toward the end of our meal when the restaurant had gotten quite a bit busier, it took longer for our server to check in with us. The food was nothing short of amazing. The grilled octopus salad won hands-down in my opinion - the octopus was so tender it was practically falling apart, and it was nicely counterbalanced by the citrus-y greens. The ahi tataki was probably my next favorite - the creaminess of the burrata was the perfect pairing for the tuna, and they had an insanely good apple cucumber jelly as an accompaniment. I also enjoyed the black sesame noodles - refreshing and lightly vinegary. The Berkshire pork belly on sweet potato bao was also delicious. The only dish I wasn't really excited about was the Kona kampachi poke. After all of that, we were too stuffed to try dessert. Maybe next time, since I'm almost certain we'll be back. read more

Why 5 stars? Because we tried nearly half the menu and it all ranged from good to great. --- --- --- What an experience! I was fortunate enough to join local Yelp celebrity, Maria P and her husband here for dinner and we felt like VIP's throughout the entire night. We tried so many different things that it's almost ridiculous - but that's what happens when you get multiple people who work for Yelp at the same table :) The only bad thing about our meal is that we were having such great conversation that I did not do a great job of performing my Yelp duties and taking notes about each dish. As I said above - the important thing is that everything ranged from good to great. We ordered all of the following: Ahi Tuna, Octopus, Clams, Sesame Noodles, Watermelon Salad, Wagyu Beef, Pork Belly, Fried Chicken, Risotto, Coconut Sundae, Churro, Panna Cotta and the Tres Leches. Phew, just typing it all out was exhausting! Even without notes, I can definitely say this: undoubtably, the star of the show was the Wagyu Beef. That dish was one of the best things I had during our five days here. The quality and flavor of that beef is something that dreams are made of and dream of it forever, I shall. If you're visiting Maui, I cannot recommend enough to come check out this hotel, even if you're not going to eat at Ka'ana. The design and architecture is truly stunning. If you're into modern design, you'll probably be willing to write a blank check to stay here because it will truly be your paradise. For our last night on Maui, we decided to go to Ka'ana at the Andaz Hotel in Wailea. Ka'ana means share, and we did exactly that ordering 3 small plates and 3 mains. To start, we ordered the watermelon salad ($15 for 3 pieces | feta, arugula & candied walnuts), octopus salad ($23 | Big Island chevre, watercress & asparagus), and pork belly on taro baos ($25 for 3). For our mains we ordered ahi belly ($28 | Japanese eggplant, ginger & yuzu dashi), lobster creole ($45 | rainbow chard, longanisa & tomato butter), and wagyu striploin ($57 | farro, salsa verde & local zucchini). Sorry, not all items pictured, but I did have a bite of everything. First of all, the watermelon was bright red and really refreshing. However, at that price I would have expected a protein: 4 Stars. Secondarily, the octopus salad was excellent. The tender octopus paired well w/ the local cheese and crunchy greens. I had some crap tako poke from Monkeypod earlier in the day, and this dish totally cleansed my palate: 5 Stars. Thirdly, the pork belly brok da mout! It was crisped to perfection, and the sweetness of the taro help balance the savoriness of the pork. The chef did a great job w/ this combo: 5 Stars. Four our mains, my rellies really enjoyed the ahi belly. It was moist and bursting w/ flavor: 5 Stars. I ate the whole Big Island lobster, and it was super fresh and tender. The fried okra, peppers, chard, longanisa & tomatoes added texture and contrast to the sweetness of the lobster. This was my fave dish of the night: 5+++ Stars. Lastly, the wagyu striploin was a winnah as well. I only had a bite, but this dish also showcased the chef's skills in combining ingredients. The meat was succulent and melted in your mouth. You hardly had to chew: 5 Stars. Regarding the ambiance, it has a nice view. However, some major downsides (and the reasons this is not a 5 Star review), are the sunset, the hostess seating, and the lack of fans. For example, the sun was shining in my face. Generally I don't mind this, but it was warm as well. In addition, the hostess sat a party of 5 next to us. The restaurant was not that crowded. She should have sat us at a table closer to the kitchen to give us more room. I could see the other customer's head out of the corner of my eye as she leaned back to take pics: 3 Stars. On the other hand, the service from JD and the team was excellent. They all showed a lot of aloha and were very attentive: 5 Stars. I'm glad we saved the best for last and ate at Ka'ana. We were throughly disappointed at Tommy Bahama and Coconuts for our other dinners during our stay. I'll be sure to stop by Ka'ana again my next time on Maui. read more

It's been 3 years since I last reviewed Ka'ana Kitchen and I've been there many times since then. The Andaz Maui just celebrated their 5 year anniversary and much has changed from their AM shift (breakfast) to their PM shift (dinner). I still think the 2 shifts should 2 separate Yelp pages since they are totally different, but I digress. I've done the breakfast buffet, but this update is based on the dinner service. Chef Jon is now the Chef De Cuisine and with him at helm of Ka'ana PM, I am looking forward to where he'll take the restaurant. I honestly expect some next level food making their appearance on their ever changing menu. BE EXCITED! They still have their mainstay selections that have weathered the years like the ahi tataki and the grilled octopus (this is the only place I will eat octopus and LOVE it). On our last few visits we tried some new dishes. Everything was honestly excellent and my favorites were the kona clams & the lobster creole. Not sure if the chef was inspired by his Filipino heritage, but I could definitely taste familiar flavors of fish sauce in the clams and the longanisa in the lobster creole. The fried chicken also features bibingka (butter mochi). This gave me a bit of the butterflies and warm fuzzy feelings inside. If you can get people to eat fish sauce and enjoy it or not realize it (like my husband, lol), you're pretty alright in my book! I was also happy to see the ali'i mushroom rissotto which is a spin off of my absolute favorite dish, the abalone rissotto, which disappeared from the menu some years ago. The flavors are virtually the same minus the abalone and oh so good. The black sesame noodles are also a solid choice. Both dishes don't have meat, so the fact that I really like them... is really quite a pleasant surprise. This is 'slow food' done right. Doing everything as well as possible, instead of as fast as possible. It's about quality over quantity. So grab a drink, kick back, & enjoy the view, it'll be a long dinner ahead. Cheers~ read more

They offer both indoor and outdoor patio dining right now, and our server also gave us a rundown of their menu (changes seasonally) which is divided into small, medium and large bites; this makes it easy to accommodate for family style dining or individual plates. Loved that! The plating for each dish was done so creatively and presented beautifully with vibrant colors. Made Ka'ana reservations through OpenTable just like all other restaurants now, no problem. Expected to get wowwed based on the reviews and location (Andaz!), and was pretty disappointed. Basically, I'm okay with the amount we spent on a dinner for two, but I didn't like feeling like a customer at McDonald's. The food was good - but too expensive for the portions, especially the appetizers. The customer service wasn't BAD, it was just appropriate for fast food. The server wasn't around, there were no menu explanations, at one point I spent 5 minutes sweating a shishito pepper I ate whole (I'm an idiot) because there was no warning against not eating part of my $65 dish. At the expense of sounding like a snob, I'm just saying - don't come here for dinner unless you're someone that's cool losing a big pot in 10/20 hold 'em. If 2/5 is more your style, stay away and go to Longhi's. read more

Came here for my birthday dinner, the food and drinks were excellent. Our server John was very kind and friendly and the ambience was great as well. We ordered the grilled octopus salad and the burrata dish for starters. I got the shrimp fettuccine and my boyfriend got the chicken and waffles which came with black sesame mochi waffles that were excellent. For drinks I got the something tropical which was a very refreshing mocktail with coconut cream, and my boyfriend got the lilikoi daiquiri which was equally great. I love how this restaurant has an emphasis on farm-to-table dishes and highlights local farms. This is a great place to watch sunset on Maui and was a highlight of our trip. read more

Beautiful setting, food was fresh but not the best for foodies. The server recommended octopus salad. My husband didn't like it, and it was only OK to me, a bit chewy. Our main course was the opah fresh fish of the day, and it was delicious. Our friends had the fresh ahi and enjoyed the freshness and flavors of the dish. We ended the dinner with homemade chocolate ice cream that was also yummy!! Our friends had the coconut cake. We may try this high-end restaurant in the future, but know in advance they serve small portions for a high price. It's worth a visit, especially if you are here visiting Maui. Just celebrated our anniversary at this really special place. The staff (asst mgr Michael) and badass sommelier Tia made the meal really special. Tons of great, fresh flavors and an incredibly thoughtful wine list made it one of our best meals on Maui. This place is so beautiful. Really spacious and open kitchen that any chef would love. Innovative menu farm to table. While the menu may seem small everything on it is great. Our kids had a steak with some amazing potatoe croquettes, I had a watermelon salad with some local feta that was so tasty. And I had a vegetarian option called sweet potato with ginger , yum! It was sweet potato cakes over lots of great vegetables and a tasty sauce that wowed! We also had the risotto with mushrooms and coconut clams! From a delicate macadamia vanilla filled crepe made just minutes ago, to naturally sweet Maui onion bagels and meltingly good house made cold smoked salmon. This breakfast buffet takes the best island ingredients and presents a great spread. Find them in the fresh made pancakes and waffles to the produce used for the made to order omelets. A real taste of the Island. So why the mediocre rating? 1. Breakfast is listed from 6:30am - 11:00am. By 10:15, they stop replenishing the buffet and making fresh food. I understand, being wasteful isn't good but a customer seated at 10:00am should have the same experience as one seated at 8:00am especially if both are paying the same price. 2. Staff is extremely friendly and try to make kama'aina feel welcome but they should not do it by making fun of or complaining about mainland visitors. I agree, ordering three egg whites and one egg yolk, wanting only a half strip of bacon or the top half of a bagel is different, but... just saying. Note: Free valet parking (excluding gratuity) with validation. Time it right and Ka'ana Kitchen offers a great cross section of the Island's bounty. My wife and I arrived with our two kids under 3 for our reservation. They opened the doors five minutes late, then they proceeded to seat multiple parties who came after us including a walk-in. The hostess told us we were next but instead we just waited. Didn't seem to care that it's extremely difficult having little kids at a restaurant, which is why we made reservations. Also you can see the kitchen and we did not like what we saw at all from the cooks. Read the reviews closely, not surprised people are getting sick from this place. There is nothing interesting about the decor of this place, they seat people in a hallway. We decided to leave. We never made it out of the starting gate with k'ana kitchen. This food is. INCREDIBLE. Please please go here. The quality of fish is absolutely amazing. The grilled octopus salad was the best cooked octopus I've ever had. My seared ahi steak main was also cooked so well and was so juicy. I don't eat red meat but my mom said her wagyu was flavored and cooked amazingly. Topped it off with strawberry desert and it was so delicious and a great end to the meal. Beautiful presentation for all of the food as well. read more

Chefs Table was absolutely amazing. We were treated with Hawaiian hospitality and not to mention Sommelier Charlie did an amazing job pairing the wines with the food. Everyone from the hello to the goodbye was so awesome I felt like I was back in the past but in the present. While the food was amazing and flavors where unique. Loved every dish. Hats off the the chief and crew. Our son ordered 2 meals off the kids menu...which were super tasty. The service was painfully slow. Over a 2.5 hour experience. We were ready to make selections each time the server came to the table, sadly it was not often. When we flag him down and ask for something he say I will be with you shortly. It was a good 10 to 15 minutes. Maybe they were short staffed. Lots of bussers but they were just walking around. We had so many dishes stacked up by the end....but the kids wanted desert. We were sat with the tables with toddlers while our kids are almost 13 and 15 and very well behaved. I would not come to this restuarant again. Many other options. The sushi or pool restaurant onsite are both better. read more

We can here for a nice new years dinner and they were doing a 4 course price fixed menu. The first course was a grilled octopus with goat cheese and I will say it was the best octopus I have ever had, great flavor and texture. The second was the foie Gras. I had never had this before but I really enjoyed it and will get it again. The main was a nice rare cooked steak with caviar topping which was beautifully cooked and paired well with the caviar. The dessert was a sort of chocolate moose with peppermint candies which was good. I know it was new years eve but it was still a little more expensive than I thought it should have been. But the food was all great and so was the experience. They also have a good cocktail menu but we're lacking a more budget friendly wine bottle selection (the average price of wine was easily over 150) I would go back again though. read more

We had Christmas Eve dinner here and had a great experience. To begin with we were seated at a lovely ocean front patio table. We were seated promptly at our reserved time and were quickly greated with water, friendly service and had our cocktail order taken. The person assigned to our table gave excellent descriptions and explanations for the menu layout and how to order. We started by sharing the chilled grilled octopus which was served on greens with aspargus and a mild, creamy goat cheese. We also shared the Kona clams served with ulu (breadfruit with a potato like taste), radish and chorizo. Both were excellent and while they had rich components we had room for entrees too. I tried a Big Eye dish which was light and seared perfectly. My husband tried the shrimp risotto and declared it the best he had had. We did not have space for dessert but really enjoyed both the food, service and view. read more

First discovered this place in 2018 and it has consistently delivered ever since. The epitome of fine dining, Ka'ana kitchen offers delicious twists on classic flavors presented in truly beautiful and unique ways. Absolute musts include the watermelon salad, ahi tataki, octopus salad, and wagyu starters. All of their entrees are home runs - I particularly enjoyed the sirloin this most recent visit. Their desserts change regularly, but we loved their chocolate rum cake they've been offering. Service is always excellent and the views are incredible. The Andaz is a very, very nice hotel so if you're looking to feel fancy for an evening, this is the place to do it. read more
