It's always a crap shoot when you move and must find a new doctor & dentist of some sort. If you've…read morehad a really good one and have to find a replacement you know how easy it is to end up in a bad situation with a new doctor or dentist. We've been fortunate so far in finding new doctors & a dentist since our move to Livonia. I would certainly consider myself fortunate for finding Marston Optometry. The previous reviewers all have it correct in stating how awesome this practice is. From the front desk staff, to the technician, to the optometrist, to the optician this place has exceeded my expectations. I have gotten to the place where I needed reading glasses and after researching a number of different places I chose Marston and am very glad I did. They were able to schedule an appointment that was convenient for me and wasn't several weeks out. I was greeted quickly and warmly by Carroll upon arriving and was only waiting a matter of a few minutes till Yolanda, optometric technician, came to get me. Yolanda explained every step in the process and seemed to genuinely love her job. Soon after Yolanda was finished, the doctor came in and completed my exam. No where in the process did the doctor try to sell me any products or embellish the results of my exam in order to up-sell me any unnecessary glasses. She was honest and explained everything in detail. After the exam, I was escorted to Mindy, optician, to discuss my options regarding reading glasses. I was concerned that this would now be the chance for them to try and sell me overpriced, unnecessary items. However, Mindy was very pleasant & helpful and not once tried to sell me anything or talk me into buying anything. She answered all of my questions and laid out all of my options without putting on the hard sell. I explained to Mindy that I was travelling out of the country for a couple of weeks and was hoping to get my glasses before I left. My request was rather challenging because this was only 1.5 weeks before I was scheduled to fly out. Nonetheless, Mindy told me that she works with several different labs and had one that she was confident could expedite my glasses. The Wednesday-Thursday before I was scheduled to fly out was when "Snowmageddon" hit SE Michigan, and I was concerned that this would delay my glasses. It was a pleasant surprise when Mindy called me to reassure me that my glasses should still be ready by Friday. In spite of the terrible weather Mindy called me Friday morning to let me know my glasses were in and could be picked up. Wow! So many businesses had closed die to the weather, yet the staff at Marston were still taking care of their patients. The staff at Marston has taken great care of me and I would highly recommend this practice to anyone that may need an optometrist.

I've had a few small problems with them, including pricing issues and communication issues, but I was willing to overlook them. However, the last straw for me was at my most recent eye exam. During some routine tests, the tech sat me in a chair in a darkened room, explained the upcoming test to me, then nonchalantly told me that the test would be an additional $45 charge, without giving me an alternative or the option to reject the test. However, I interrupted her and told her that I wanted to reject the test. The tech then said that I would need to have my eyes dilated if I rejected the test, and I agreed to that. Then, she handed me a form and told me that I needed to read it, as I was sitting in the dark without my contacts in or my eyeglasses on, in order to reject the test and opt for dilation. Later, when we returned to the exam room, I was asked to sign the form, again, without my contacts or glasses. It seems to me that asking a patient to read and sign a consent form without their contacts or glasses, in a dark room, is ethically dubious. It also seems like really shady sales practices to make a test with an additional $45 charge the default, when a no-cost alternative is also available. I don't think I can trust Suburban Eye Care to have my best interest in mind after an experience like this. I sent this feedback to Suburban Eye Care soon after my negative experience and received no response from anybody at the practice, so it seems clear that my concerns are not important to them.

My insurance company had to reach out to them to get them to even check my insurance. They even called me back to let me know something seemed odd about their conversation with Suburban Eyecare Vision therapy manager. Sharing this experience as I'm honesty at a loss as to why this was such a difficult, confusing experience when it was easily avoidable with a little work - that I ended up doing in having my insurance company contact them. I ended up choosing not to go here given this experience and also after researching this isn't the first time this place has been involved in scams with the owners history of being indicted on many felony charges of writing illegal prescriptions. They were a clean, and well run facility. The check in was brief, and the wait time to see the technician and eye doctor was minimal. The technician was extremely friendly, a young woman who was in her early twenties , and she helped maintain a sense of calm for me as she ran me through the tests. I decided to opt for the glasses and contact exam. The glasses only exam was about 50$, and the contact+glasses exam was approximately 85$. I also got two side tests, one that looks at the back of your eyes, and the other checks your Peripheral vision for blind spots. For both tests it was an additional 20$. After the technician tests, I waited to see the doctor for about 5 minutes. He was professional, but very brief and not memorable as a positive or negative experience. After his exam, he gave me my prescription paperwork, and directed me to the front area. I then selected a pair of glasses from a generous variety of frames. The frames were relatively inexpensive, priced from 20$-180$ from what I saw. They also had deals for some brands where you could buy one pair, and the second one was about 40$ cheeper if you opted for a backup pair. Afterwards, a wonderful woman by the name of Kelly (Kellie?) assisted me in choosing the correct frame length and lens size for my facial shape and prescription limitations. She was informative, not pushy, friendly and overall made my experience even better. She also gave me my trial contacts, which were a 2 week pair, and suggested that I make an appointment as soon as I could to get a contact review when the two weeks was over. Anyways, the lenses I decided to go with were the ones with glare reductio, which was the medium priced option of the three lens options (+ add one like polarization etc). This added to my total spent for the day approximately 65 more dollars. I went with one pair because I didn't have the cash to do the medium grade lenses for both pairs. So, In total, I walked out the door after spending 256$. Not bad, for someone without eye insurance! It's a decent place, I'll update more when I receive my glasses and test out these contacts.

The only odd ball of the group is Alan, one of the opticians. He's one of those "one of these things is not like the other".
