I got here right at 5 and not only was I the first the customer, I was the only one here. The door was open but nobody was home. So I walked out, waited 5 minutes, then finally there was a guy who indicated we could sit anywhere. We did, scanned the QR code menu, and... nothing. Nobody came. The lone guy was standing by the register near the bathroom, so I walked over and placed my order with him. Kind of weird as I assumed it was a sit down restaurant, I found later that the waiters do typically take orders at the table. Guess it was just early for them. The appetizers came pretty quickly, given everything we got was fried I guess this isn't too surprising. The karaage mushrooms were fantastic. Like Dutch crunch bread they do lacerate the roof of your mouth if you aren't careful, but the taste and texture is fantastic. Perfectly juicy mushrooms, crispy panko breading. A good squeeze of lemon and these got completely devoured. The shrimp tempura with rice paper was also very good. The rice paper wrapper is airier than normal tempura batter, and while it's thicker, it's incredibly light and basically shatters when you bite it. Very satisfying and the shrimp were cooked perfectly. The accompanying sauce was a bit sweet and one-note for me, but my dining companion liked it. Where things fell down a bit were unfortunately on the entrees - spicy garlic toripaitan ramen for me, classic tonkotsu for my companion. Note that they do not offer different sizes of ramen, and the default bowl is pretty big. So kids will almost certainly not be able to finish, which is a shame since kids like ramen. A 1/2 portion option for smaller appetites would be a smart addition (hint hint). I mean you can literally charge 1/2 price for it and have less food waste, seems win-win. For me, the spicy garlic was really a gamble that didn't pay off. While I love spicy food, and I have Carolina reaper hot sauce in my fridge, I do not generally like spicy ramen. Ramen broth has a relatively delicate flavor and I find heat ruins it. Similarly I love garlic, but again, subtle flavors easily get overwhelmed by garlic, so I would typically avoid it in ramen. Well, guess what - it may be their specialty, but this spicy garlic chicken ramen tastes like spice and garlic and little else. All the other flavors are obliterated. If you like spicy garlic soup then you'll probably like this, but this doesn't really read as ramen to me. The noodles were good, the chashu was too thin, and I discovered that chicken pieces in ramen are not all that great. Pork is the king for a reason. I did like all the toppings and visually the bowl was quite nice. However I found myself wishing I had just ordered classic tonkotsu. But... My companion ordered that and barely touched it. There were complaints of it tasting funny, with a sour off putting taste. This from someone who loves ramen and has tried most of the ramen shops in the South Bay and typically calls every single tonkotsu ramen "amazing". So I trust the judgement, and I do think it's quite plausible I couldn't pick up the flavor with the garlic and spice additions to my own ramen. It's good to try new places but it doesn't always pan out, for me the appetizers were great but as a ramen restaurant, Ramen Takumi misses the mark. With the distracted service (the waiter came once to refill water, after that was MIA for water refills or the bill) and the... let's say "undistinguished" ramen, there's not really a compelling reason to return. Layer it in with the super sketchy location and this won't be added to our regular rotation.
