I ordered the chicken Katsu with beef curry last night. I was very impressed with the presentation and food quality.

Potato Croquettes: great appetizer they were still nice and crispy when they arrived. Aji fry: another great appetizer if you are looking add a little bit more protein. Chicken Katsu Curry: overall the curry and rice were done really well. The curry had a nice balance of savory and touch of sweetness that is common with Japanese curry. The packaging was clever there was a divider that separated the katsu and rice. The really big downside was unfortunately the Katsu. It was cooked really well and had a nice crunch, but meat was disappointing perhaps it left in the freezer for too long. The texture must had dried out. That was unfortunate though enjoyed most of the meal. I am willing to give it another try. -John read more

Ordered off doordash and it was nicely packaged! I got the pork katsu curry. The curry flavor was really delicious; savory, mildly sweet with a slight kick. I enjoyed the small bits of meat and cooked down onion, and the ratio of curry to rice was just right. As for the pork katsu, I appreciated that the katsu was still crispy despite the transport from door dash. However, it was in the dryer, thinner side in my opinion. Can't comment on the service or ambiance of the restaurant because I ordered delivery. I've Doordashed from here a few times now and I think this is my go-to spot for comfort food now. I usually get the karaage bowl with vegetarian curry, and potato or crab croquettes on the side. The vegetarian curry is rich and flavorful, a huge step up from other restaurants I've tried. The chicken karaage, potato croquettes, and crab croquettes are seasoned well and always arrive crispy. I also appreciate that you can opt for larger or smaller portions of rice and curry, depending on your optimal ratio. I'd love to see a spicy curry option at some point; I think that would make the perfect bowl even better. Overall 10/10 and definitely recommend for anyone vegetarian or anyone who doesn't eat red meat like myself. read more

Great addition to SJ downtown choices for a week day lunch. I tried their vegetarian curry with the potato croquettes. Absolutely delicious! The curry was unctuous and very flavorful. The croquettes were fried to perfection and packaged separately to preserve their crunch. I loved their curry to rice ratio! I've been back a couple of times and each time the dish has been consistently delicious. I do hope that they can offer at least two spice levels in the future. I prefer mild spice and the curry is medium-spicy. It took about 20-25mins for the order to be ready for take out- which can get tricky for those with limited breaks. They don't have a store front as it's in SJ Food Hall and you have order at the kiosk. I'll continue to return every time I have a Japanese curry craving- which is probably every week! ;) read more

Went here with a friend and I enjoyed the curry. It was very flavorful and rich, comparable to the Curry House Japanese Curry & Spaghetti Restaurant that used to be in Cupertino long ago. The chicken katsu on the other hand was disappointing. It was bland, dry, and not as crunchy. Not sure if it was from a bad batch that has been sitting out for a while. If there is improvement on the portion size for the curry / chicken katsu and the quality of the chicken katsu I would be willing to give it another try. read more

Saw Nippon Curry was recently added to DoorDash in my area! They have locations in SF and Berkeley that are both rated well so I was excited to try. Food delivered super fast, that it was still hot! I ordered the pork katsu curry with cheese. I love that they did a tiered container to prevent the katsu getting soggy. It's nice and crispy. The curry is honestly so delicious, I just knocked a star because they forgot the cheese which I was charged for. Will have to try this again sometime! read more

FYI, they're a ghost kitchen located in the food hall on the corner of Santa Clara Street and 3rd. You order on a touch screen, a big screen in the front tells you your place in line, and a curry-ya no oniisan brings you your food. Since Yelp likes to prompt me to use the word ambience and I'm a completionist, there is basically none, but it was pretty clean with decent bathrooms The curry was great. Very flavorful and authentic to what you would get in Japan at a curry restaurant. The kani croquettes were perfect, crunchy on the outside, creamy on the inside. My only two nitpicks; I wish they had non plastic dishes for eating in (As someone who has worked in food service, I understand the logistical issues behind it. I would pay a bit more for the option to not) and I wish there was an option to add veggies. This old guy likes to get their fiber in when they can. I'll be back! As such, you order on kiosks and YOU HAVE TO BE MINDFUL NOT TO ORDER FROM CURRY HOUSE!!!!!! Now on to the NIPPON CURRY review. It's good. AMAZINGLY good. To be fair though, I go to the SF location frequently and think they're the best curry in the bay (I've been a few other places in the bay looking for good Japanese Curry), so this tastes EXACTLY the same. It has just the right amount of thickness, spice - it's just damn good. Ordered via UberEats for the first time early in the week and the second time last night. Suffice to say, we like the curry. The seperater in between the rice and the breaded protein is a nice consideration. We've opted to have the curry on the side which costs an extra fifty cents (likely for the extra container cost) thinking that it will prevent sogginess and that may not be necessary given the separater. For both times ordered, we were missing items. For the first, the potato croquettes offered in the deal did not arrive. For the second time, it was the pickles we opted in for and the utensils we paid for. Maybe going in person is the better method of getting everything we've order. Thrilled that Nippon Curry is now down in SJ! Having made the drive to SF (and stood in line for opening weekend) I was excited to see them open in the 3rd street food hall. We ordered the veggie curry with potato croquettes. The curry is mildly spicy, thick and delicious. The croquettes were fried to perfection, light and crispy. Pickles were sweet (I wanted more than the small container!). Everything was well packaged for take away. Definitely going to be my go-to curry spot. I really wanted to like this place since it's nearby. Ordered through Door Dash and the price was $17 for the Katsu Curry which was a serving of rice, breaded pork cutlet, Japanese curry sauce and a tiny container of something pickled. It came in a nice, big container which separated the breaded cutlet from the rice with curry sauce on top and smelled good, so I heartily dug in! But Friends! The curry sauce was cloyingly SWEET! It really should NOT be sweet. I am used to eating Japanese curry and this place got it FREAKING WRONG with the disgustingly sweet sauce. YUCK I was so unhappy with it and it sucked cause the sauce was already mixed with the rice. Ended up just eating the breaded cutlet. Not sure if it was an off night, but I will NOT be ordering from this place again! Beware of this if you don't like sweet curry sauce. Order your Japanese curry elsewhere! read more

Let me set the scene for you: It's a brisk (San Jose brisk) 56 degree day in downtown the Monday after Super Bowl Sunday. I was perusing the DoorDash offerings for lunch when the idea of Japanese curry tickled my fancy. Nipon curry came up in my search which is located in the relatively new San Jose Food Hall downtown. I was intrigued and up for an adventure! I walked over to the San Jose Food Hall. I was expecting it to be like San Pedro market.. But felt like a ghost kitchen meets food court since you are not ordering from individual business windows. However it was clean, plenty of seating at 1230 and even floral center pieces. I ordered the chicken katsu curry with regular rice, I love that customers can customize their rice portion. No extras, order came out to $21.14. For me the quantity of food was enough and I prefer quality over quantity. However those with a larger appetite may be left wanting more. When my order was brought out to me, they included a potato croquette and karage sample with my order. I was so excited to be able to taste these items without ordering something additional I wouldn't finish. Both were tasty, I plan to go back for the karage next time, it was juicy, flavorful and crispy. Potato croquette was not bland, I could taste the onion and seasonings, nice any creamy! The Food Hall in downtown San Jose has a great new addition with the new Nippon Curry. I had the Pork Katsu Curry that was separated from the rice and curry, maintaining it's crisp, juicy texture - this is a very thoughtful and important detail. They were generous with the curry portions as it covered the rice entirely. The curry also tastes fresh, not one of those cubed curries. Thicker curry with a little spice to it. The guy that handed me my order was friendly and seemed enthusiastic to be there. All in all, highly recommended and great value for the price. Omg, the Japanese curry here is so flavorful! I'm glad they have a location in downtown San Jose which is close to my work area. The location is located in a small food court style cafeteria with tables to enjoy your meal. In any case, I tried the regular size Chicken Katsu Curry and absolutely love it!
