Chicken Katsu Curry

I paid extra to have my curry separate from my chicken and they gave me no curry at all. I called and they forwarded me to voicemail twice. I got fried chicken and rice...nice. I'd give less than a star if possible

Japanese Potato Croquettes Curry

Great addition to SJ downtown choices for a week day lunch. I tried their vegetarian curry with the potato croquettes. Absolutely delicious! The curry was unctuous and very flavorful. The croquettes were fried to perfection and packaged separately to preserve their crunch. I loved their curry to rice ratio! I've been back a couple of times and each time the dish has been consistently delicious. I do hope that they can offer at least two spice levels in the future. I prefer mild spice and the curry is medium-spicy. It took about 20-25mins for the order to be ready for take out- which can get tricky for those with limited breaks. They don't have a store front as it's in SJ Food Hall and you have order at the kiosk. I'll continue to return every time I have a Japanese curry craving- which is probably every week! ;)

Really good Japanese curry! This is located in a food hall and I wasn't expecting much. Definitely was pleasantly surprised! Ordered the Pork Katsu Curry and the Japanese Potato Croquettes Curry. Both were delicious and had so much flavor. The packaging here is top notch since everything stayed hot & crispy. Highly recommend if you're craving Japanese curry.

Chicken Katsu Curry

Went here with a friend and I enjoyed the curry. It was very flavorful and rich, comparable to the Curry House Japanese Curry & Spaghetti Restaurant that used to be in Cupertino long ago. The chicken katsu on the other hand was disappointing. It was bland, dry, and not as crunchy. Not sure if it was from a bad batch that has been sitting out for a while. If there is improvement on the portion size for the curry / chicken katsu and the quality of the chicken katsu I would be willing to give it another try.

Saw Nippon Curry was recently added to DoorDash in my area! They have locations in SF and Berkeley that are both rated well so I was excited to try. Food delivered super fast, that it was still hot! I ordered the pork katsu curry with cheese. I love that they did a tiered container to prevent the katsu getting soggy. It's nice and crispy. The curry is honestly so delicious, I just knocked a star because they forgot the cheese which I was charged for. Will have to try this again sometime!

Great curry, portions are awful.

I ordered the chicken Katsu with beef curry last night. I was very impressed with the presentation and food quality.

A little salty, but good in a pinch. There are other curry spots, but this one is ok if you're in downtown and just gotta have it.

The first couple of times was great and then it started to fall off later on. Including the texture and flavor not hitting as hard and the fact that it's closed on weekends now. Impossible for non wagies to go there, meaning I can't have any when I'm there on weekend vacation I guess, but with how everything closes early and is dying in Bay Area, I'm somehow not surprised. Very tiny spot and not much seating, so you're either taking it to go or you're praying there's a chair and a counter that's free. No big deal since I've been to other Japanese curry places like this. I've had a mix bag where the katsu was deliciously crispy and moist on the inside and days where the meat inside is dry, even drenched in curry. Hot curry sauce is Japanese hot, so it has spices in it but not spicy at all. The workers do their best for the lunch rush, so that's a plus at least. Overall, it was okay, but man the times sure have changed.

The restaurant was full when we got there, but the food still came out soon after we ordered. We had chicken katsu curry, korokke curry, and a menchi (fried ground chicken) sando. Parked easily on the side street, walked in around 3:30 in the afternoon, no hassle. The place has an authentic Japanese cafe feel, the kind where the menu has things you don't typically find at your average sushi spot. I had my eye on the sandos, specifically the Chicken Katsu Sando, but landed on the Spicy Tuna Don instead. Good call. Spicy yellowfin tuna tartare over well-seasoned sushi rice, topped with sesame, furikake, green onions, with a little radish and cucumber on the side. The tuna was very fresh, the rice was on point. Service was quick and polite - they even have an outside window for takeout. One nice detail: a neat dollop of wasabi is pasted along the inside wall of the bowl, which is a clean way of letting you control exactly how much heat you want to mix in. Tasteful presentation, but don't let that fool you. It has a legitimate kick, so calibrate accordingly. Paired it with their Honjozo dry sake cup, which was a nice complement to the meal and exactly the right call for a mid-afternoon bite. The sandos looked great on other tables and I fully intend to go back for the Chicken Katsu Sando - and then go try the wine bar next door to it. which was pretty tempting.

You order at the front, then grab a table and wait for your name to be called. We got the chicken katsu with curry, karaage with curry, and tonkatsu. We also ordered menchi katsu a la carte (side) which came with two pieces. All of the curry came with rice or cabbage and you can choose the spice level (1-3). Level 1 is a mild with a kick. Pickled radish is additional dollar, kinda wish the meal came with it. Honestly would recommend just getting the choice of protein with the curry because it's a couple dollars more than getting a la carte... Curry was very good! Nice flavors and the rice helped enhance it. I liked the menchi katsu the most. It is basically a deep fried beef hamburger with crumb coating, flavors were really good and was juicy; came with 2 pieces for a la carte. Can't go wrong with chicken or tonkatsu too. The chicken karaage came with a mayo sauce on the side! I liked it, but I think this would be better on its own. Overall would come back and try other options.

The curry itself was flavorful and well spiced, not mind blowing but definitely solid. Portion is generous. Maybe a bit too much rice for me, and I kind of wished there was a veggie side, but no real complaints. Food came out fast and hot. Staff was friendly. Seating is on the smaller side but it wasn't too packed when I went.
