Whenever I have a brutal morning at work, my brain immediately tells me to go to Men-Bei (I had to ensure my Tuesday morning is free of meeting due to Men-Bei schedule) It's the best comfort food. It's a completely different style than the famous hyped-up ramen chains--it feels more like authentic, satisfying soul food. It gives you the perfect energy boost to get through a long afternoon. I come here all the time, either with a friend or by myself when I just need some solo downtime. You can't go wrong with the negi-moyashi if you want a bowl focused on great noodles and a mountain of delicious wok-fried veggies instead of a heavy piece of pork. Men-Bei is one of those places I drive by all the time, telling myself I'll try it one day. Well, I guess today is that day! Vibe: B Wandered in around opening time. Cozy lil mom and pop shop. I got seated right way. Food: B+ I ended up getting the Men-Bei ramen, assuming it's the house special. The broth itself was hearty; the chashu was tender and well seasoned. The spicy add-on was a nice touch. The noodles had a nice chew, but I think I prefer the thicker variety. I wasn't sure about the ginger though. It did cut through the hearty broth, but I'm just not sure if it's a necessary addition to the ramen. I might have to return try out some other dishes as well. I just got back from Japan, and discovered my love for ramen. I was greatly missing that experience, so on a recommendation, I went to Men-Bei hoping to quench my appetite. Yes they serve ramen, but my quest came to an abrupt halt shortly after we entered. When we walked in, there were some Japanese folks leaving the place, talking to what I assumed was the owner. This seemed like a good sign! Once seated, I noticed some audio that was playing in the kitchen. It was at that level where you could hear it, but couldn't quite figure out what it was (TV show, YouTube, Music?). Soon after, the owner came out to greet us, she was very pleasant, and things started looking up. Then one of the cooks came out and started watching a TV show(?) with his cell phone on full volume in the dining area. The atmosphere then took a dive into 1 star territory, ugh. Still buzzing from our recent return from Japan, we ordered what we were craving for the last week. I got the Moyashi Negi, and my wife got the Gomoku Ramen. The first bite for both of us left us missing Japan even more! First off, the broth was watered down and lacked the complex flavor we fell in love with. Salt please! Then the ground pork bits tasted like they were boiled in water with no spices. In Japan,that pork was so perfectly cooked and seasoned, that it added that extra salty, spicy deliciousness this ramen was lacking. So the ramen and broth were both underwhelming. Stopped by on a Sunday for lunch. We were seated immediately as it wasn't busy. Service was quick and friendly. Cute little space with some tables and a bar seating area. We ordered the gyoza, Omurice, and Men-Bei ramen. Portions were huge considering the price. The Omurice was DELICIOUS. Each grain of rice was perfectly wok fried. The outer layer of egg was so thin and didn't overwhelm the rice. It was literally the size of a football. Easily enough for 2-3 people. The Men-Bei ramen was tasty and the broth wasn't too salty. I was here a few months ago on my trip to the Bay Area, and I can't believe that I totally forgot to write a review. We stopped by for a late lunch on a weekday (around 2pm), so the restaurant was pretty empty by that time. The workers were super nice, and the service was good. It did not take long for our foods to come out. We had to order the Omurice and the spicy Men-Bei Ramen. To our surprise, the portions were huge, especially the Omurice. I really did not expect the Omurice's portion to be that much (probably enough for 3-4 people), so it totally made it worth the price. The Men-Bei ramen was rich and super flavorful, and all the toppings were really good. The Omurice came with a soup, and it was easily the best Omurice I've ever had. The entire meal was super tasty, and we had a ton of Omurice leftover to bring home. I would totally come back here again next time I'm in the Bay Area and order even more. We've visited this restaurant a few times in the past and have always been satisfied. However, this time, we left feeling disappointed. My partner can't eat much, so we decided to order the combo meal $20, which included ramen and half a fried rice. We didn't do this because we were cheap; we simply don't like eating leftover rice. The older lady waitress informed us that we couldn't share meal. I thought I was in Japan, sharing meals is not allowed there. There's a minimum order of $15.95 per person. She also mentioned that we could pack food to go if we couldn't finish it. We ended up packing 80% of the fried rice home. Hiyashi chuuka is only offered in the summer. It was refreshing, sweet and tangy. I appreciated the fact that the wasabi was put on the side so you had the option of mixing it in. I've had their tonkotsu ramen here before and it was good as far as ramen goes. In comparison, the moyashi ramen lacked the same depth to the soup, but there were lots of bean sprouts. My mom and I came here to grab a bite to eat. I had been looking forward to finally trying their curry rice, which I had seen photos of here on Yelp, after trying their egg fried rice to go a few times. We had also ordered a side of gyoza. First off, it was my first time being inside the restaurant and it's pretty small and very clean with a capacity of 33 people so keep that in mind when swinging by. I got my plate of curry rice and my mom and I got our side of gyoza that we shared. The wait for our food wasn't too long since it was way past lunch time and there weren't too many customers. The curry rice was amazing! It's definitely up there with Demiya, very flavorful, very filling, had a nice kick to it since I got it regular. The gyoza was very nice with a slight crunch and didn't stick to my teeth like how a lot of places usually make it ( which I don't like ), i also like how the meat in the gyoza outweighed the veggies. What a great little ramen house close to the Costco on Coleman Avenue near the San Jose airport. They have an excellent variety of Ramen and the servings are good size. They also have other Japanese dishes such as Donburi , fried chicken as well as fried rice. It's all very good and the portions are good. The pricing is very reasonable and the service is good. We found it in a desolate area with nothing else open around it. The place is no frills and they had one little old lady serving the whole place...which isn't very big. It's different. That's the best descriptor that I can give for this ramen. It doesn't have that kind of "creamy" texture / color / taste you'd find with tonkotsu ramens in the bay area, but it's still good? The visual presentation and choice of ingredients look questionable at first but it does work in the end. It's really a ramen that plays with your senses I guess. It makes you feel things, but you're not sure what that feeling is. Again, it's not bad ramen, it's just different. And maybe that's what you need in your life - a little more variety. I feel quite validated giving this place another shot right before a Costco run: I returned to give their curry ramen a try and my brother got their yakisoba. Overall this place is a keeper and deserves more traffic than it seems to get; definitely recommend it if you're in the area. Picking the right menu item is a bit tricky, but they have plentiful portions of goodness. The parking lot itself is currently in a connection mess due to construction, so there's a massive detour to get to Costco currently (however parking for the restaurant plaza itself is perfectly accessible). Just beware if you're planning on a simultaneous Costco run like I do. The Curry Ramen could afford to have some more toppings (it's not much to look at), but it's a considerably heavier broth with the added curry. The curry roux components were very finely chopped so what you end up with is a much smoother soup base than I expected with a great flavor and body to it. The Yakisoba was not too greasy or salty, but had a fantastic fragrance from the moment it was set on the table. I definitely liked the pickled ginger on the side and the healthy dusting of seaweed. 8/29/21 We stopped by Men-Bei Ramen for dinner since it's so close to Costco, but at the time, the line for Costco gas was ridiculously long. We got a parking spot right in front and inside it was not busy at all so we were seated right away. The table we sat at was super wobbly. Under the table legs, we saw that someone had put paper napkins under it to try to stabilize it, but that obviously didn't work...We asked the lady if we could switch to sit at the bar and she said it was okay. As we switched tables she helped bring the menus there and brought out two glasses of ice cold water with lemon in it. There was a good variety of dishes, but we were both craving ramen: 1. Regular wonton ramen (mine) 2. Spicy wonton ramen (his) Before the ramen came, we were also given a small plate of edamame. It was lightly salted and a nice little snack before our meal. The ramen came out in big bowls! The smell of the soup was very fragrant. There was a lot of noodles and the dumplings were yummy! I enjoyed my bowl, but it was kinda bland. I liked the spice level from my boyfriend's ramen; it looked really spicy but it actually wasn't. I would definitely come back and maybe get a spicer ramen or try out their curry. I found out about omurice earlier this year and have been looking for a place that serves it. Their portions are massive and the price is fair for what you get. Finally was able to try this place and I wasn't disappointed. The place itself is a cute small setting, not very many chairs and tables but worth the wait if you have to and the service was great. We arrived at 715ish and they let us know the kitchen closed at 730. The hours show they don't close until 9pm so not sure if the hours online are incorrect or if that was just a one time thing. Food was delicious, gyoza had so much flavor being super crispy on the outside while maintaining the moist on the inside. Edamame were perfectly seasoned with sea salt, Cha-Shu (pork belly) was perfectly sliced, tender and delicious. I rolled it adding the spicy mustard, bean sprouts and marinated ginger and it was perfect. Ordered the Men Bai Ramen and the Umani Ramen-both spicy and delicious. I've always wanted to try omurice/omelet rice, and this is the closest place to me with it on the menu. I ordered a large just in case the serving was small. The serving was huge and there was enough leftover for a couple of meals. The next day, I ended up adding more ingredients to the fried rice to make it more of a stand-alone meal. The omurice is filled with fried rice made of pork, ham, and shrimp and wrapped with a thin egg omelet. This is a basic omurice and different from the kind sold at Kichi Kichi in Osaka, which is made with a beef demi-glace sauce in the rice and on the omelet itself. While their ramen is, admittedly, *not* some kind of 18-hour labor of love, it's cheap, it's got big portions, and it's a decent price for what you're getting! My girlfriend got the miso ramen, while I got their men-bei ramen, which I'm almost certain is just the miso ramen with a little bit of fried garlic to spice up the broth a bit. For ~$14, it's honestly quite the steal, getting two big pieces of cha shu, menma, a whole egg (!), and some extra accoutrements that I forget at this time.
