Finally got some Ippudo after craving it for a while. I'm not often in the Cupertino area, but I was doing a staycation nearby and decided to get takeout from IPPUDO Cupertino to eat in my hotel room at Residence Inn, which is literally just a 2-3 minute walk away. I ordered the Shiromaru Classic, Ippudo's original signature tonkotsu ramen featuring a rich pork-based broth, thin Hakata-style noodles, and chashu. The broth was good as always, and the noodles were fine, but I was a little disappointed with the chashu. It wasn't as tender as I remember it being, and what surprised me most was that the slices weren't particularly thick, yet they were still noticeably tough. In my opinion, chashu is one of the most important components of a good bowl of ramen, so this really stood out. I also ordered a side of takana, which is spicy pickled mustard greens that add a salty, tangy kick to the ramen. Unfortunately, they forgot to include it in my takeout order. Luckily, I was only a 3-minute walk from the restaurant, so it wasn't a huge inconvenience to walk back and pick it up. One thing I did like was that there wasn't much of a wait compared with what I remember from previous years. I went on a Saturday around lunchtime and was able to get my order pretty quickly. My wife and friend shared the Kuro-Obi: known for its hearty, over-the-top portions and intense flavors. The atmosphere is lively with tables/booths small and large. The decor boasts all of their locations worldwide, along with a traditional Japanese decor. The restaurant is clean! We ordered quite a lot: The cucumbers dressed in chili oil and sesame oil, chili oil gyoza, chicken karaage, and takoyaki balls. Of these apps, I would say the takoyaki and cucumber dishes were my favorite! The cucmbers (all though simple) were carried by the sesame oil and the smallest kick of chili oil flavor. It was fresh and the remaining sauce on the plate helped provide a dipping sauce for the other dishes which were quite lacking in flavor (gyoza + karaage, imo). The rice bowl is filing and the chicken had a crispy outside and the meat juicy. The Yuzu ramen was good but the amount of soy used didn't let the Yuzu come through and gave it a sour aftertaste almost vinegar taste. Went here for lunch with a friend and we both had a good time! It was quite busy when we came in, but were able to get a seat fairly quickly. There were so many options to choose from but we settle d on the Karaka Spicy and the Dragon TanTan. We also did the Treasure (protein, egg, menma, and nori). There's a laminated 'newspaper' like menu on the table as well as a QR code scan for a digital menu. Server brought water and utensils to the table while we perused the menu. We tried the Goma Q-marinated cucumber, spicy gyoza, oishi Kara-age, Karaga Spicy ramen and the miso ramen. All of them were delicious. Our fav was the spicy gyoza. The sauce had just a hint of the Szechwan pepper but not so overpowering. The Kara-age was nicely proportioned and cooked well. Good flavor. Of the 2 ramens were ordered I liked the Karaka best. The chashu was also on the tougher side and thin, a bit pale looking tbh. The onsen egg was perfectly cooked. The service was great, but also it was an empty shop with one server. Food came out in a timely manner. Experience and portions were great, I just think there are better bowls of ramen that are more suited to my taste. We've been here twice now, not just because it's right under our apartment but also because it's very tasty. My husband gets the Akamaru ramen which he likes because he gets a big slab of pork belly. I get the yuzu shoyu because I like the yuzu flavor. It's subtle but you can taste it. You can choose thin or thick noodles. I usually like more bite to mine so I go for the thicker noodles. I have a small appetite and never finish my ramen, no matter how tasty, because I just get full easily. I was able to finish this ramen bowl portion with ease, and my guests were left feeling hungry after their ramen. So many good ramen places around, it wasn't worth the visit to this one for me. Service was okay, but I didn't like how they slipped in asking if we'd like to add an egg without mentioning the price. Seemed like a shady, upsell tactic. read more
