I recently revisited Juniper for dinner after a long hiatus, mainly due to past service issues, but I'm delighted to report that our recent experience was exceptional. We kicked off the evening with two cocktails, and I chose a gin concoction that arrived with a single large ice cube, making it an instant hit. For our appetizer, we ordered the truffle fries, which were not only delicious but also creatively presented in hefty wedge chunks, offering a generous amount of potato goodness. We inquired about their house-made ketchup, which they no longer served, but were pleased to hear it's making a comeback due to popular demand - trust me, it's worth it, even for someone like me who isn't typically a fan of ketchup. Moving on, we tried the sweet strawberry salad, which, while tasty, didn't offer any particularly outstanding flavors but had a well-balanced profile. Finally, for the main course, we shared the shrimp pasta. It was undeniably delicious, though a bit heavy on the Kalamata olive flavor, to the point where the olive juice in the sauce made it overly salty and overpowering. On the bright side, the shrimp were cooked to perfection. Juniper's ambiance has always been a strong point for me. The charming brick walls, candlelit tables, and an elegant bar create the perfect setting for a relaxing and enjoyable evening, whether it's a romantic date or a get-together with a friend. I'm glad I gave Juniper another chance, and I'm looking forward to more visits in the future. I want to try their pizzas! The pizza oven was going all night and they looked amazing coming out.
Right kind of vibe, though the food and service was just okay. A lot of items were over-saturated and looked better in presentation over taste. My favorite item was the Kale & Eggs Salad - not your typical salad but had lots of good flavor. What caught me off guard was that they offered to split the dishes for us, then charged a split fee for every item we split with no heads up about the extra fee. We came during good weather season so got to sit outside and enjoy live music. Would come back for chill drinks and good vibe, but not necessarily the food.
Met up with some friends before a show at the Egyptian. This was a great find. Very nice interiors, exposed brick and booths. Also very friendly and experiences service, and the food was great. I had the trout. Wonderful. We all had drinks. Very happy. Just a great all around experience. I'll definitely come back.
Unexpectedly fantastic. Mostly empty restaurant on a very busy street and had the best food of our trip. For food we got the Burrata Salad with Salmon and the Spicy Linguini with Clams. The burrata was super creamy and the salmon was perfect - crispy outside, moist inside. Not oily at all. The linguini had great flavor with some kick. The corn and olives went really well with it. We also tried the pesto gnocci which was super pillowy. Good cocktail menu with lots of options. I got a Bee's Wings (lavender honey goodness) and my wife got the Berry Burlesque (fruity herby). Friendly staff, nice interior. Felt like we were going to fall off the slippery high top seats but everyhing else was great.
One of my favorite menus in Boise! Must try this place! Very busy and lively! The food was amazing! The menu was very creative! I can't wait to come back when in Boise again!
Staff sat me immediately. Only a table of 4 on patio available and they didn't even hesitate to give to me (small things are the difference maker). Food was delish. Had the Kale and Egg with extra bacon, egg and Salmon. The cherry vinegarette dressing was ridiculous. Patio is open to 8th with live music and bars/restaurants everywhere and people frolicking about. Love Gems was a great waitress.
My superstitious mother always told me to be careful how I choose to ring in the New Year because it would have a detrimental effect on how the entire year turns out. Maybe she was right. And let's admit - 2020 is anything but fun as of right now. Maybe it could have been better, for me, at least, if I had chosen to eat elsewhere on December 31 2019... So for some reason my husband and I decided to leave the comfort of our humble abode to tred downtown to spend the new year eve. I didn't want to get too crazy so we decided Juniper seemed like a nice, calm restaurant to enjoy a late dinner. They had a limited menu for New Year, so there really wasn't much choice we had. The most appealing item was the Duck Ramen. It was $18 for a serving, which is alright based on the concept and atmosphere of the eatery. I was super stoked for the dish, then I got it. Terrible. Absolute joke of a dish. My very traditional Asian mother would be mortifed. First of all, there was maybe 7 tiny shredded pieces of dehydrated duck confit on my ramen. Second, there were hardly any ramen noodles. Third, they packed in the mushrooms to hide the fact there were no noodles. It was almost ALL mushrooms. Just sad sad SAD. I couldn't even eat more than 3 bites. If my husband didn't eat it out of pity I would have asked for it to be removed off the ticket. Okay, but then... What better way to make up for a disappointing dish than with dessert, right? You can't go wrong with that! Well, or so I though. Again, limited menu so we had to go with the peanut butter pie. I wish they added "store bought" on the description. I've had better desserts from Walmart and say better from Albertsons, a damn supermarket bakery! Shameful. Absolutely disgraceful. I may have been able to give a second star out of pity if the service had been good. But our waitress didn't really seem like she knew what she was doing. It was a busy night so I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt but she rolled her eyes when I asked for the dessert menu. It was dark in there, but it happened. I be seein things you don't know I can see. Never returning here again. I hope others are able to have a fabulous experience. I would consider giving Juniper a second shot however DT Boise has so many superb eateries to offer, and I ain't here for a long time, I'm here for a good time, especially when it comes to my food.
Pretty nice atmosphere. Nice wait staff. But the pizza was not what any of us expected. The Caprece pizza had like 1/2 teaspoon of basil and maybe a teaspoon of tomato. Chef needs to consult an Italian. We were literally laughing. But we did eat it!
Stopped in with sis after getting haircuts. I love their house made tonic! We had the sea salt bread which was hot and delicious. Love the (I'm assuming) feta dipping sauce that comes with it. The Brussel sprouts were served with slivered almonds, roasted red pepper sauce and feta. Perfectly cooked The little red head bartender was super sweet... wish I would have caught her name. We're looking forward to stopping in again!
I had higher expectations for this place, so I left slightly disappointed. First, the good things- the service was wonderful and the restaurant looked beautiful. We don't drink, but if I did, I'd probably like to come back just to sit at the bar during happy hour. Howeverrrr... The restaurant was freezing inside (everyone was wearing their coats). The portion sizes were small enough to leave you hungry when you left. The skin on the trout wasn't crispy at all and the beef risotto was bland. For our $80 dinner, I just had higher hopes. I think we'll give it another shot someday, but definitely not any time soon.
Came in here for the first time and had an amazing experience. Our server Ivana & Aaron our bartender were amazing! Wood fire pizza at its best and the best mixed drinks in Boise to start the new year. 10/10 would recommend
Juniper's back, baby!! Back and better than ever too! Remodeled inside with the star of the show being their brand new pizza oven on display for everyone to see. I didn't get a picture of the pizza oven this time around, so you'll have to go and check it out yourself but it is, dare I say it ... sexy. The pizza that comes out of it is really good too. My mom isn't a crust eater but she ate this crust, so that says a lot. We got the Pesto, prosciutto, and burrata pizza- it also had olives, artichoke, roasted garlic, arugula, and a balsamic reduction. SO MUCH YUM. If fried calamari is you thing, you'll love it here- the texture is perfect and the dipping sauce is addicting. The kale and eggs salad is a classic juniper dish that I'm glad they kept! Added salmon for an extra $9 but it also had pancetta in it which was my favorite part. The roasted cauliflower and steamed clams were both amazing and just paired so well together. Both of the sauces in these dishes had a really nice spice that built on the more you ate- I swear they complimented each other so well. The roasted focaccia bread that came with the steamed clams was soooo delicious. The Juniper house salad is a really good deal listed on their menu at $9! The black garlic balsamic dressing was recommended and absolutely did not disappoint at all! Loved it! The bar at Juniper is just as good as I remembered pre-covid! Got the cucumber jalapeño and classic margarita. I'm a sucker for a spicy margarita and they do it good here at juniper. Can't wait to come back for happy hour! Welcome back onto 8th St, Juniper! We missed you!!
What a great atmosphere. We loved the feel of this spot and everyone serving us was super friendly & made suggestions. Drinks were perfection! I wasn't a big fan of the stroganoff, it just wasn't as flavorful as I'm used to. But everyone else at the table loved their sweet potato gnocchi & shrimp linguine! I could def see this as a great date night spot for drinks and dessert! I'll give the food another shot next time.
Last Friday night we tried Juniper again in hopes for a better evening. We didn't plan anything after dinner this time so we could make certain to get food. This experience was much different than the first. We arrived with reservations at 6:30 early. We were seated promptly downstairs vs upstairs last time. It was was not as loud and we could carry a conversation across the table. We only had 4 of us on this trip, so that could have helped. The Food: We ordered the Rosemary Fries to share. They were seasoned well, and perfectly crispy. I ordered the lamb burger with bacon, my wife ordered the salmon. The salmon, she said, was very good. I requested my lamb be medium, but it turned out to be well done. The burger had good flavors that complemented each other well. If the burger was not dry, it would have been perfect. The salad was not bad, but way over drenched and saturated. I raised the star count by one because this experience was night and day different over the first visit. But because my burger was over cooked and dry I couldn't give them a 4th. read more

I was so excited to hear that Juniper had reopened! Unfortunately, this was probably the worst food I've had in Boise. I was sure they had a new chef but our server assured me they didn't. They still have almost all the same menu items that they did before closing. However, they "revamped" everything. I had the best mushroom risotto I'd ever had here last summer. I ordered the same thing tonight and it was the weirdest "risotto" I've ever had. I've never known a risotto to have tomatoes, peas and pesto. Yet it was bland. I had to add so much salt and pepper to make it somewhat edible. I was glad the server suggested I add salmon to it because otherwise I would still be hungry. I ate the over cooked salmon which wasn't terrible. Just dry. I ate more of the risotto than I normally would have because I hadn't eaten all day. My friend had the trout that she used to order and said it was also very different and flavorless. Our server said she would discount our check. I told her that wasn't necessary. That I just wanted to give feedback. She insisted. AND THEN.... came back and said that the manager wouldn't let her discount it because "nothing was wrong." I'm giving them two stars because our server did a great job but my friend and I both agreed that we wouldn't be coming back. Such a bummer. read more

came in here during lunch and man was it fantastic. They weren't too busy so service was very good. They had a large menu with lots of different choices. We went with the ramen and salmon entrees. Don't go in thinking traditional japanese ramen. They did their own bold twist to it and came out tasting great. The duck was well flavored and crispy almost like a pulled pork style. They had a healthier type of wheat noodle which was a nice change. Overall great! The salmon was covered with sweet honey glaze with carrots and brussels sprouts. They either fry it or sear it but what ever they did to it, it was probably the best tasting brussels sprouts i've had. This place is a great place to try new age fusion type foods and a great place to grab a drink with your meal. read more

Juniper has firmly established itself as one of the newish kids on the 8th Street scene. Hip ambiance and tasty gin drinks are on offer here. But I bet you could have guessed that by the name! Try to get a seat upstairs. A bit more intimate with less traffic from the bar. Try the house made ketchup. Good stuff. And if you make it to brunch, let out your belt and try the chicken in a biscuit. The fried chicken is tasty and crisp and the sausage gravy thick and flavorful. Service is nice but not above and beyond. It's a solid spot to dine, just not jammed pack with memorable dishes. Check out the happy hour for small bites and to feel like one of the cool kids. read more

We went to Juniper to celebrate a birthday, and even though it was busy, they managed extremely well. Sheradan was one of the most friendly waitresses we've ever had- she gave us excellent drink recommendations and even sang happy birthday! The clams with focaccia are to die for, and the Juni and the Jetts cocktail is my favorite drink in Boise. Absolutely must go now that they're reopened- we'll be back soon for the great food and the great service from Sheradan and Jonah! read more

I was in Boise for a week and went to Juniper twice! It was so good and the patio was great for the time of year. Their happy hour menu has good deals too. Highly recommended. read more

Juniper was fallback choice for Happy Hour when first choice was closed. (There's a First World Problem. No complaints.) Splendid serendipity to have been vectored here. The list of things enjoyed was almost as many as the years of wedded...umm...bliss being celebrated. Vibe, menu, foood, service, price point all get thumbs up. VIBE All people will feel welcome here from those in little black dress (as was our hostess) to the bartender's jeans and shirt. During our late afternoon into early evening (about 4:30 - 6:00) folks of all ages (from twenty to seventy somethings) and all attire (including shorts and tees) arrived to take tables in and out. Music mix was nicely eclectic to fit the space and tuned low enough in volume to be a thread in the tapestry of the vibe but not take over the experience or drown conversation. Nice! Two story interior was remodeled from a former restaurant for uber cool meets warmly inviting design. Exposed a wall of brick on one side as counter point are sleek black wood tables and chairs, unadorned for meal service but for white cloth napkins with black design. Look up to creative lighting options. Open only three weeks let's hope they keep this universal appeal going and don't devolve into "hipster central" because this is a location for people of all stripes who are lovers of great food and drink. Nolo timere, fellow Boomers! ;-) SEATING Some tables on front patio. About 14 high stools at the bar. Maybe 35 seats at standard height tables with banquette seating and chairs line the wall on main floor. More standard height seating up a flight of stairs. Seats 120 overall I am told. Plenty of space in the aisle way for service staff or guests on their way to and from tables or the loo. That owners avoided the "sardine can" in traffic flow here is "yahoo" worthy. So is that the bulk of seating is standard height tables and not obnoxious (IMHO) high perch tables. SERVICE Top notch for warm welcome, good attention and follow through. We were greeted promptly, given menus and had "the drill" explained when we asked questions. Our server knew the menu, could answer questions and also make recommendations. We felt well tended but not hovered over. LIBATIONS Specialty menu leans to gin cocktails, one of my favs, and then it dawned on me...duh...Juniper...what is a key ingredient in gin? Both gin mojito ($7.50) and Juni and the Jets ($8.00) a perfect summer sipper of muddled grapefruit, gin, St.Germaine, and prosecco were expertly crafted. Thoughtfully assembled by bottle and glass wine list and approachable prices. For big "woohoo" they had two sparklers by the glass and a third poured at brunch times. Coffee is Dawson Taylor ($2.50) served hot in white mugs. MENU & PRICES Food is fresh twists on classics along with new creations that leverage seasonal and local ingredients. That there are so many options that encourage small plate or shared plate dining is right up our alley. Chef Aaron Wermerskirchen clearly knows his stuff for creativity and execution. Prices ranging from $5 to $25 are a good value for this quality. FOOD We ordered a couple of things and both were excellent so we are eager to return. Fried root vegetables were crisp and seasoned just right and came with warm blue cheese dipper (@$6). Mussels and clams with chorizo and sweet red pepper (@$14) came in a broth so delicious and perfectly seasoned we asked for spoons to be sure we got every drop along with the three generous baguette or batard slices sent out with the dish. The only suggestion we'd make is for the kitchen to put grill marks on that bread to have it be an even better partner for the broth. The dessert menu is short, four or five options all presented in the same way in a mini mason jar. We shared rhubarb and strawberry with pistachio crumble that came with a scoop of fantastic cardamom ice cream (@$5). THIS N THAT 1) LOCATION: Downtown next to Matador. Parking can be a bear on street. 2) ACCESSIBILITY: Level in and throughout first floor. Many standard height tables. Ample floor space for path of travel. Upper level seating is by stairs only. 3) HOURS & HAPPY HOUR: Love that they are open straight through from about 11a to 2a, so if you like to dine for late afternoon "linner" you'll find them open. No Happy Hour here but since they are open straight through, there are lots of options on the lunch menu (until 5) or dinner menu (starting at 5) for that purpose. read more

Came here with a girl friend on a weekday evening and got seated right away. Our server was very sweet and knowledgeable of the menu. I ordered a burger with a gluten free bun (from a local GF bakery) that was DELICIOUS and a side of fries!! The lamb burger was fantastic and, believe it or not, the ketchup was to die for!! They make their own ketchup in house and you can taste the difference. It was SO good! You have to try it! read more
This is a great spot. I sat at the bar and we sampled the curry cauliflower as well as the pork belly fries. The blue cheese 'gravy' puts them over the top. The duck ramen is first rate and fig cake was a fitting finish. Service is also excellent. read more
Not a food review. Good craft cocktails. Mellow late night Tuesday chill when many other places already closed. They take their ice shapes very seriously. In one instance a single 3-inch cube and in another, hand crushed ice. Seriously, I watched him. Many in-house prepared syrups, house made grenadine and maraschino. Great martini says husband and perfect bartender. Friendly, frequent check-ins without intruding on our conversation and then responsive and informative when we made comments. I'm encouraged enough to want to come back when next I'm in town to try the food and other selections. read more

Nice addition to downtown since my last visit. It's hipness is readily apparent and wasn't I glad for it?! The cocktails! Oh the infusions, elixirs, exotic libations this mixologist crafts into liquid gems that make us all too happy to order another (...and another). Modern yet warm deco w exposed brick, high bar, minimalist, tall front windows, solid background music and pleasant staff all lend themselves to create a chill atmosphere. My Idaho fried catfish w spicy slaw was so excellent that I came twice on my visit! My brother marveled over the PBJ burger. And apparently he's not alone as that thing has a loyal following. Wow! We stepped in for Saturday brunch after walking the Farmer's Market. All of the staff were extremely nice and helpful. I'm a sucker for a fried chicken biscuit. There is a place in Portland that has the best and Juniper is the first place I've found that even comes close. The pork sausage gravy was tasty but the chicken was the star. Perfectly cooked and crunchy. I washed it down their habanero Bloody Mary which was delicious. I like my Bloody Mary's spicy and this fit the bill perfectly. We will absolutely be back to try more items on the menu! read more

I am ashamed to say that after all these years, I only tried Juniper this past Sunday. I met a couple of friends for brunch. I am decidedly NOT a gin fan, however, I did try a gin that was really good and didn't leave me feeling like I had just licked a juniper bush. For food I chose the Duck Chilaquiles and it was so incredibly delicious that my tongue wanted to reach up and slap my brains out. It was a refreshing item to have a on a brunch menu. I don't tend to gravitate toward "breakfast" foods so brunch menus can often be difficult to navigate. The duck chilaquiles was flavorful and just right for a warm day. It didn't seem heavy though the portion was generous and enough to fill me up. The absolute highlight of my visit was trying a cocktail called "Saved By The Shell." Not only does the name conjure up my crush on Mr. Belding, it is my new favorite cocktail in Boise. A gin and pistachio mix, it is a dreamy drink that captures the decadent pleasure of a pistachio French macaron. It is flavorful and divine. I am glad I finally came in. read more

Great atmosphere... and right in the heart of downtown Boise. You can eat inside or outside. Great mixed drinks that are refreshing and unique. We had two kinds. The fried olives were kind of strange... but ok. Our meals were yummy. Didn't have dessert. Very nice time... busy place, friendly staff. We will return. read more

Good brunch place but wasn't amazing for me. I ordered the chicken in a biscuit, side of potatoes and a mimosa. Potatoes were a hit - (can't beat Idaho's potatoes) and the mimosa was how it should be: mostly champagne, so I was happy with that! Now for the grand entree - I really wanted to love it. The sauce they have the sandwich sitting on was good, kind of reminded me of stroganoff (or maybe that's what it was), biscuit was buttered but cold and did not taste freshly baked. The chicken was still a little crispy but not flavorful. Overall, okay. Not saying I wouldn't come back though! I'd love to try other dishes. read more

Juniper sports a fun and vibrant atmosphere and takes their service seriously. Our bartender, Jake, delivered fantastic service and concocted fantastic cocktails. We were impressed by the concept containing an abundance of locally sourced goods presented in a refined fashion. I had a braised buffalo dish with gravy, potatoes and veggies. The veggies were crisp and the potatoes probably riced (super smooth no chunks). The shank was so juicy it melted in my mouth and didn't require a knife at all. I was impressed at how well the gravy paired with the buffalo. I typically don't like gravy slathered over everything because then it all starts to taste the same, so I ordered it on the side. It came out piping hot and on a cool plate (didn't sit in the window for long). My sweetheart had the blackened trout and said it was terrific. I didn't try it because I'm not a huge fan of blackened seasoning since the bitterness lingers too long for me, but her plate was presented well. I stole the pictures off the web because I don't like being that guy, but chose pictures that I felt represented my experience. Food: 5 Service: 5 Value 5 Absolutely loved this place! In short: great inside for aesthetic purposes, lots of options for anyone in your group, all locally sourced products, and everyone working there loves to be there. I was so excited to try this place as it brings in ingredients from Idaho and nowhere else. I got Kale and Eggs as it felt like the right combination and boy was it! The kale was perfectly sauteed with the right amount of salt and pepper - so easy to put too much. And the egg was great on top with the runny yolk covering the kale exactly how you would hope it would. My friend got their cut of the day... basically enough for both of us as a meal! It was huge, but cooked perfectly and brought quickly. Really loved this place and would highly recommend to anyone in Boise! read more

By far one of my favorite places to eat in Boise. The staff is always attentive and knowledgeable on the menu (great for the wifes dietary restrictions) and they have killer cocktail menu to tie it all together. I can never fault a place for being busy on a Friday/Saturday night and our food taking a little longer than usual...it's the name of the game people! Luckily our server Kevin came over and kept us informed on how things were going in the kitchen so we never felt in the dark. I ordered the beef tenderloin special they had going on that night and my wife ordered the skirt steak tacos and we were more than satisfied when they arrived to the table. You know it's a solid dish when the people at the next table over ask what you ordered so they can get the same thing! Visit after visit my family and I love Juniper, it's a local restaurant serving quality food with local ingredients. In a city that seems to be growing and losing some of those values I think that's something we can all agree to enjoy. read more
Celebrated our new grandchild with a relaxing dinner and drink at Juniper. The drinks are fruity and have perfect mix of gin and other ingredients. The wait staff are friendly, helpful, and timely. We came in for lunch last week around 2 pm. It doesn't seem like they have a special lunch menu, as you simply order off the regular dinner menu. At our table we ordered four different sandwiches: Pesto Chicken Sandwich, Pastrami Reuben, Pastrami Dip, & the Bison Burger Melt. We were there at an off time, so there was only one table that had already been served and a few people sitting at the bar. Despite being the only orders lined up when we placed our orders, the food took forever to be prepared. It was odd that we waited so long when no one else was in there & the kitchen just had to prep a few simple sandwiches. Wait time aside, the food was very good. Nothing wildly outstanding or groundbreaking, but no major execution errors either. All of the sandwiches on toasted sourdough were perfectly crisp and not overly greasy. I hate when I order a panini at restaurants and they add so much oil to the exterior of the brea that it becomes inedible. This was not the case at Juniper-- a very light spritz of oil on the exterior just enough to make it crunchy. Out of the four sandwiches, the bison burger melt was the best. It had a large patty that spread across all of the bread so you weren't getting any bites without bison. And the ratio of cheese/ onions/ mushrooms was spot on. Each sandwich was also a fair size for the price you pay. One miss however was the au jus that came with two of the sandwiches. It was pretty flavorless and had a huge pool of oil on top-- it had separated and was more reminiscent of a vinaigrette than of an au jus. They would've been better off not serving this with the sandwiches. Overall pretty good spot with good food, but you may be waiting a long while if the restaurant is full. read more

Safe options for gluten free folks like me?
Is brunch served every day or only weekends?
With COVID the restaurant is currently not open for brunch due to their staff numbers. They do start serving their lunch menu at 11 am.
Says it's not good for kids. Is true for brunch too or just evenings?
They just don’t have a great kids menu. It’s a gin bar with great food. I would agree it’s more of a date location and not family night out. That being said the staff has always treated my children amazing.
