I wanted to like this restaurant. I first came here two years ago with an old high school friend who I hadn't seen in 10 years on a short vacation to Boise. I ordered the veggie burger and it was great. I recently moved back to Boise and I ate at Juniper again because it had vegetarian options. The ordered the cauliflower dish and it was very oily, basically drenched in oil and the bottom of the dish was like a soup of oil. I asked the waitress to let the cooks know but she didn't. Then I came another time with my partner and ordered brussel sprouts, which were soggy, and I ordered the cauliflower again and asked for easy on the oil (the flavors were good the first time so I thought I'd enjoy it if it wasn't so oily.)... sure enough they gave me another super oily dish with puddles of olive oil. We mentioned to the waitress the brussel sprouts weren't edible, she took it off our bill, and my boyfriend ended up eating just French fries for his dinner. Overall, soggy oily vegetables. i can't say one bad thing about my experience here. came in for brunch on a saturday during the farmers market- no wait. the server was kind and attentive, the food was fantastic, the restaurant was clean and beautiful, the menu was thoughtful and interesting- not to mention well priced- i just can't think of one thing to complain about. this is why they are getting 5 stars from me. i had the "blt salad" which was sooo good. pork belly, sweet marinated roasted tomatoes, poached egg, home made crispy onions, butter lettuce, and a yummy white cheddar dressing. i just didn't want it to end it was that good. my mom had the chicken biscuit with sausage gravy, thick yummy bacon, so much delicious in one plate. i snuck a few bites! overall i so look forward to coming back here again and again, to check out everything this place has to offer because it's phenomenal. read more

Pretty good food overall. Bison burger was great. A little on the sloppy/gooey side since it fell apart quite a few times during the meal. Flavors were on par with expectations. Side salad was standard spring mix with dressing and probably the most underwhelming. Would have been good if they included some other veggies for a texture change since spring mix and dressing are pretty mushy overall. Red beans and fries reminded me of the fries from Koja Kitchen in SF with a slight twist, the addition of beans. The pork was tender and had flavor. Portions were generous and pice point was good, but then again I'm coming from the ungodly expensive Bay Area. read more

This place has really declined- I was here last summer and the food and service were excellent. Last night was awful. The food was simply not good. The service was worse. The server got the orders mixed up, didn't supply us serving utensils for our tables shared appetizers. Worse, the beets in the beet salad were not cooked. When we brought it to the attention of the server, instead of taking it away she said," I'll go talk to the kitchen and you can just munch on that". Cool, because I just love raw beets. She then came back and informed us that the beets had been boiled for 4 hours, and the reason I thought they were raw was because they were chilled. Umm no, when you can barely cut a beet with a knife it is simply not done. The Trout was not fresh and they messed up the temp on the Beef Medallions ( switched temps with the two people who ordered at the table). When I asked for limes for my San Pellegrino they were bright in a napkin and all stuck together. Also, I love paper napkin shreds in my water with my raw beets. Last, the server proclaimed "It's Friday night, you have to drink!" Ummm, no I don't have to drink and if I do it would have grave repercussions. Went to a work lunch here held in the upstairs of Juniper. Staff was very friendly, location is easy to get to downtown, parking is a little challenging unless you can get a spot in the parking garage, and food was pretty good. I had a salad and a grilled cheese and it came with the house dressing on the salad. So the dressing was a little bit bitter, but my grilled cheese specialty sandwich was excellent. I don't know why people are all excited about this joint but after my visit tonight, I won't be back. We ordered the pretzel strips and garlic fries for our meal. Though the pretzel strips were pretty good, the garlic fries were awful. The only way to describe the garlic fries was they tasted like burnt popcorn. You know, you can't get the taste out of your mouth no matter how much beer you drink??? Yeah, that gross. Something was said to the server about the garlic fries being burnt and awful and her response was, "Well, you ate half of them. Couldn't have been that bad." That comment sums up Juniper in 12 syllable or less. We won't be back. With all the options in downtown Boise available, we can cross Juniper off the list for good. read more

Sauces that were not reduced appropriately.. still bitter and undercooked. Wait staff that continually apologizes for timing, and slow service. Thanks to Michele R. and Yelp one of my last meals in Boise ended on a HIGH note. Lackluster, but highly-touted restaurants in Boise downtown abound, but even with a head cold, Juniper's stood out in terms of flavor and value. First off, HH (4pm to 6pm) boast $5 house specialty cocktails - Bourbon Sour, Gin Mojito, Greyhound - a little on the sweet side and not strong enough for me... but at $5 a glass, you get a good sized glass, not one of those petite martini glasses where you're wondering whether to sip with your nostrils or lips. HH food - Burger ($4), Garlic herbed Fries ($2), Wings ($4) - Burger came petite (it's $4, people) - came with a side of house-made potato chips. Buns were some kind of crumpet, not the usual burger buns. Not enough for a meal, but decent for the price. Meat was medium-rare to perfection but not much on the flavor (not due to my head cold but also seconded by hubby). Garlic herbed fries - very nicely seasoned. "Best damn garlic herbed fries I've had", said my other half. Wings - Don't make the mistake of ordering SPICY, unless you are familiar with the Asian, put-your-mouth-out-with-a-fire-extinguisher version of spicy. The spicy version of the wings were surprisingly hot, but the yogurty aioli (?) sauce that came with it was nice. About half a dozen petite wings with one HH order. As we are gluttons, we also ordered the ribs with a side of grilled asparagus, which were on the dinner menu. Ribs were OK in flavor but quite tough and fatty. Asparagus nicely grilled and not drowning in oil. Decor modern, minimalist. Music, old school rock, not that perpetual throbbing electronica/dance that beats to the rhythm of a low grade fever/head cold. You can dress up or down - fellow diners included middle-aged women and the younger set. A lot of caesar salad with grilled chicken was being consumed around us. Perhaps a specialty? Server/hostess appeared to be the only one serving and hosting, and she did a great job. Others had to hail her down, but she came willingly to our table several times, perhaps sensing what absolutely pigs we were, ordering half of the menu. Great new find downtown Boise. In Boise for work and also happen to have have a wonderful friend that lives in the area. She suggested Juniper and I am so glad she did. When you first enter you notice what a beautiful space it is. Edison chandler bulbs, hardwood floors, exposed brick etc. The whole staff was friendly and welcoming (seems to be a Boise theme). There was a reservation that didn't show for their table so we we're immediately seated, score! Our table ordered the pretzel, meatballs, and kale salad to start. Everything was delicious and plated beautifully. The cheese dip with the pretzels could have been smoother and creamier but it was still tasty! For our main course we had the vegetable curry and a salad - all was flavorful yet simple...perfect! The curry had a nice spice to it. They also had an extensive bar menu (focusing on Gin) however I just had hot tea and my table mates had beer and wine...which they enjoyed. Juniper has one of the best happy hours in town. They have creative and flavorful menu options your not going to find anywhere else in Boise. I love the fact they are all about supporting local farms and breweries/cideries. It's one of the few places in town I can get local cider. The red beans and fries is delicious and huge!! Their burger is made from local meat topped with fresh veggies and their house made aioli. Friends I have gone with said their cocktails are great but vary by the bartender. Hungry yet? Our entire experience was disappointing at best. From the moment we arrived, the staff was not as welcoming as I would have expected. I had to tell two separate people how many were in our party, as if they couldn't communicate between themselves. At the table we weren't acknowledged by our server for nearly 15 minutes, drinks took another 10, and our food wasn't delivered until an hour after we had arrived. I had ordered what I thought was a BLT sandwich - not a BLT salad. When it arrived, the server seemed like she knew there was a misunderstanding but seemed only slightly apologetic. I ordered another sandwich that arrived quickly but was let down immediately. The "grilled cheese" consisted of bread, albeit delicious, but only a single depressing slice of cheese, with a dollop of the fig jam only in the middle of the sandwich. Coming to Boise for the first time, I was very excited to experience the food scene. Juniper came up on multiple lists, ranking top 5 in the city. We got to Juniper just in time for Happy Hour. The drinks were delicious...I had wanted a bourbon drink and our server, who was super friendly, suggested a bourbon mule...loved it! I would've given them 4 to 5 stars previously but they had changed their happy hour menu which was really disappointing. They used to have a burger for five bucks after 10 PM which was fabulous but now the price has gone up across most of their happy hour items. Overall the food is pretty good but seems like they could use more space for seating. I'm not sure if they still have live music on occasion but have been there when they have had live performers and that always makes it enjoyable. They have a decent menu but for whatever reason I wish they had more options so I'm not too big of a fan on this place. read more

I heard good things so wanted to check out Juniper. The ambiance is nice- good lighting, comfortable seating, music not too loud. The menu is quite small, especially for the starters. We chose the meatballs (bison), which were quite good, and the cheese plate was adequate, but could have been thought out better, pickled grapes (ehh), candied nuts, average bread, and cheese. The steak salad was tasty, but way overdressed, and mushy. The hamburger with egg was a fail all the way around. Bland, dry tasting meat, egg was over cooked-hard boiled, and the bun was English muffin type bread, definitely needs a rework. On the upside, the service was good and waitstaff friendly, and the location is perfect. I will go back when they iron out some if the menu kinks and give it another try. read more

I met some friends a Juniper for a holiday lunch and was pleasantly surprised. How did it take a dear friend who lives in San Fransisco to find the best new spot in Boise!! I live here and hadn't tried it yet. I had the best food I have had in Boise in years outside of my own home!
