Connecticut is dotted with these wonderful bakeries across the state, I'm so glad I found this spot from social media. If Julien's was in New York City, it would be one of the cities top bakeries. Once the Port Jeff ferry arrived in Bridgeport, I headed straight to the bakery for breakfast. Yelpers have been raving about Julien's Soufflé Egg Sandwich and it's going to be the first item I order. Walking inside, it's half open kitchen and the other half is a sit down area with a few communal tables. The service was quick after I ordered my breakfast sandwich with coffee along with a loaf of bread and a cookie to go ;0 The Soufflé Egg Sandwich? Perfectly cooked eggs, thick bacon with cheese on a freshly baked roll. It's what I crave for breakfast. First time here, Julien's has my vote as one of the best bakeries in Connecticut. read more

I was so excited to try this place for the baked goods, breakfast items, and lattes, and overall I really enjoyed it. Everything tasted fresh, flavorful, and high quality. My only disappointment was the limited gluten-free selection. I understand most cafés cater to the general public, but for a bakery, I was hoping for more options for those with gluten sensitivity or celiac disease. There were only a couple of rolls and about four gluten-free baked goods available. I learned they also make gluten-free biscuits, but they're only sold at the farm location. I'd definitely like to come back and visit the farm to try those biscuits. The only other thing to keep in mind is the price. For four baked goods, one latte, and one breakfast sandwich, the total came to about $60. While the quality was excellent, it's definitely on the pricier side. read more

when i saw that Julien's was opening a second location, I knew i had to get there as soon as i could and order as much as i could (lol!) my friend and i went full out - we started off with their decadent frozen hot chocolate that blew us away for its rich and creamy taste! we had to try their famous almond blueberry pancakes and they were incredible - from the whipped mascarpone to the blueberry compote, it was so so good! a little less syrup on the bottom would've made it perfect. their Bacon and Onion Quiche is always exceptional, i could seriously eat a whole pie of it myself! and the pastries always hit the spot, the cinnamon roll, nutella donut, sourdough chocolate chip cookie, and brownie were really so delicious. my only complaint was the man at the cashier was unwelcoming and rude. being our first time here, we thought we ordered at the cashier but you actually order closer to where the pastries are and then make your way down. there were menus at the cashier and we grabbed them to look out - as we grabbed them, he was about to check out a customer and instead of politely asking us to step to the side, he essentially told us to move and get out of the way. we said we were looking at the menu, moved aside, and apologized. he then took it a step further and said "well you can look at the menus over there" and pointed to a table. that's not good customer service and was our first interaction with anyone in there. while it did leave a poor taste in our mouth, we still spent about $100 on our order because we love Julien's. I do think there should be a sign of where the line starts and that the person running the cashier should have a positive attitude when customers are new and confused. read more

Juliens new location on Bank street is very exciting as a stand out choice from the other places to grab a coffee + treat in the immediate area. Outdoors, the decor is quite nice with fresh flowers. I have visited their farm store and it was lovely to see greenery here as well. My donut was excellent, you could taste quality ingredients throughout. My coffee, same as the farm store, was just okay. Im not sure what it is about the roast they use, but it never stands out to me. The industrial finish was interesting, and I found the seats comfortable. Overall, I would come back as a treat. And hopefully to try the tiramisu. Prices are high for the area, and comparative to doro or even higher. read more

Everything is made from scratch on-site." That sets the bar pretty high, don't you think? Julien's is open daily from 7:00am to 3:00pm, so you'll see breakfast things and sandwiches on their menu. Think egg sandwiches, quiche, avocado toast, pancakes, French Toast, club/deli/specialty sandwiches, soup and salads. Plus, they sell great looking breads and pastries. When you walk in, you'll see a big open area with the ordering counter and grab and go refrigerated cases. On your left will be a big dining room with plenty of tables and seats. I was intrigued by one of their sandwiches and picked up a Roasted Pepper sandwich ($15) -- "roasted red peppers, mozzarella, burrata, pistachio, arugula, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar on focaccia". Really big fan of their original farm store location, so I was super excited when Julien's bakery opened and was really eager to try the new menu items. I came in on a Friday morning and there was no line, the space was huge and minimalist with tons of wooden seating. My friend and I were most excited to try their dine in menu, so we ordered the pancakes, french toast, and huevos rancheros. The pancakes and french toast were really good- swimming in good syrup, really delicious and airy mascarpone that complemented the richness of the thick slightly zesty pancakes and the crispy-on-the-outside yet still very fluffy french toast. The portion for the pancakes was great too. The huevos rancheros were a skip as they came out room temperature and were okay, just not particularly flavorful. We also tried their passionfruit donut and a blackberry filled pastry knot. These were also tasty, the curd in the donuts was good, but the texture of the donut dough itself wasn't as memorable. Overall we had a great breakfast at Julien's bakery and I would go back for their hot breakfast or lunch dishes, but still love Julien's farm store for their amazing amazing breakfast sandwiches. read more

Amazing, drove past this place and stopped by to grab a pastry item. I got a chocolate pistachio croissant. It was very crunchy/crispy on the outside where the visible lines were. On the inside it was soft and filled with chocolate pistachio filling. I dont remember the name of the other two items but there were also really good. The top right had bacon jelly, figs?, bell pepper, tomato, and cottage cheese?. It was a little too sweet for me but worked well with the bread. The one on the bottom left was filled with raspberry jelly, and pistachio cream. I live hours away, but am willing to drive back to try out other things I was eyeing. read more

Upscale, Bougie, Pricey Yep, that would be three words I use to describe Julien's! This new storefront just opened in Granby, creating a buzz around the surrounding communities. The original farm store is still open a little west of this location. I went out on this Friday morning early, arriving just after the store 7am opening. The display cases were stocked full with many many choices, including breads, croissants, danish, coffee cakes, donuts, cinnamon rolls, along with the fancy coffees and lattes To the left of the showcases and ordering area is a gorgeous sitting room. The staff was helpful and accommodating, taking my order. But when I was paying for the pastries, she just walked away... Not even a smile or thank you. That was kind of strange. I ordered two cinnamon rolls, two blueberry coffee cakes, and two regular coffee cakes. The cost for all six of these with the little tip, came to $58+. This amount made me think I was on Madison Avenue in New York City. Yes, this kind of hit the pocket hard. When I got home, and upon opening the box, I was expecting these flavors and smells to just smack me right in the face. That didn't happen... I smelled oil... Like stale deep fried oil and I don't know why, maybe it was the box. I first tried the cinnamon roll with cream and it was meh. Was it $6 - $10 good? No. The cinnamon roll outer part was stale and deep brown, overcooked. The pastry just didn't taste fresh. But I liked the cream topping that accompanied the cinnamon roll. That was really good. Now I know I'm gonna hear that they were just recently baked, but I don't care. The cinnamon roll was stale on the outside! For what this was, and all the hype, disappointing. The blueberry coffee cake was interesting. It didn't smell like coffee cake. It smelled more like used cooking oil. Biting into it, the blueberry on top candied, stuck on my teeth, and it was inedible. I had to kind of pick through my napkin, and get the crunchy hard inedible candied part out. It also seemed like the cinnamon brown sugar topping was lacking. The blueberry that made it into the coffee cake was OK. Dense, and just ok. The regular coffee cake was very dense, and that was also a little stale around the outside. There was not a lot of brown sugar and cinnamon topping on it. It wasn't very sweet at all. This pastry was just OK also Now I know what you're thinking... How can this guy eat three of these pastries for breakfast... great question but I sampled these pastries with three of my neighbors. We cut the three different pastries into fours. My three neighbors all felt the same way as I did. All three liked the cinnamon roll the best. The coffee cakes, they stated were just mediocre, very dense, and lacking flavor As good as this place may appear to be, I would say certain occasions it would be a worthwhile visit, a once a year treat.....maybe This by no means is to bash this establishment, but geez, this is a little pricey for the average family with just par quality of the pastries I really was expecting to be blown away by the quality of the pastries. I just paid 14.01 (including 20% tip) for a cup of clam chowder. I took it to go and expected it to be outstanding. The good ingredients are there but something tastes (I'm writing this review concurrently to eating the chowder) a little sour. Not a win. It was my second visit to the Bank Street location. The first was two weeks ago when we stopped for pastries. My passion fruit doughnut WAS outstanding, as expected, since I assumed the quality would be the same as the Barndoor Hills store. It was. The croissant was also excellent per my sweetie. So why only 3 stars? First, while the decor looks sleek, the seating is not inviting. Hard benches and ridiculous metal stools say to me, "we don't want you hanging out". This is industrial chic. Prices are high. Very high. Granted, quality is high, but I'd like to see a full service situation to match the pricing. I spend a fair amount of the year in LA and the prices at Julien's are right up there and maybe even more. My $14 cup of chowder took an inordinate amount of time especially since it was within an hour of closing and there were more employees than customers at the time. The pleasant young man who rang up my order looked a little embarrassed by the wait, but he was front of the house and it was not his job. I will continue to frequent the farm store and pay the premium for the best doughnuts around, but I fear I won't be returning to the restaurant in the center of town. read more

Julien's is open and I've never been more excited -- what a wonderful addition to the town! The ambience is absolutely dreamy, making it the perfect spot to slow down and treat yourself. I ordered the Boston Cream and the passion fruit donut, and my goodness, they were fantastic. The Boston Cream had a dark chocolate dip that I truly thought I wouldn't like, but it ended up being the best Boston Cream I've ever had. The slight bitterness of the dark chocolate paired perfectly with the sweet, creamy filling -- the balance was superb. Then I tried the passion fruit donut, and let's just say I cannot wait to go back. It has officially become my favorite donut of all time. I even told my fiancé that if he ever wants to surprise me with a pick-me-up, that's the one I'll be dreaming about. I finally got to try Julian's new bakery location. Walking in is where the baked goods are showcased, and where you order. To the left is a bright and very inviting seating area. I ordered the Blueberry Pancakes,almond pancakes,maple syrup, blueberry jam, topped with whipped mascarpone. The pancakes were light on the inside, nice and crispy on the outside. The whipped mascarpone was a nice touch and delicious, but the overall meal was too sweet for my liking. My wife ordered the Today's Quiche. The quiche was made with onions and bacon, and came with a seasonal greens salad. The small piece of quiche was very creamy with little bacon and no onions in it. Our coffees were delicious and the service was quick. I also got a Nutella doughnut to go. The doughnut was delicious, and packed with filling. I found this bakery to be pricey, and the breakfast items to be disappointing. Coffee and bakery items were much better. read more

Amazing breakfast items and pastries. I was fortunate enough to get to Julien's right when they opened. About 30 minutes later, the line was out the door. The croque madame is the perfect breakfast to start the day, especially before a hike. You can either order to go or eat in the store. There is plenty of community style seating. read more

The girl taking my order was clearly impatient repeating "anything else" while I was looking at the pastries and menu. She was passive aggressive and was not friendly to me or my friend. We both got the same drink, an iced matcha latte with oat milk and vanilla and unfortunately they mostly tasted like sweet oat milk. Our drinks were also not the same color when they both came out at the same time and were the same drink? Super clumpy and ugly. I've never had such a lack luster experience at the Farm Store. Have been going to Julien's farm store for a while now and was so excited to hear he was opening another location. Went here recently on the morning of my birthday on a weekday and loved everything we had! The service was quick and friendly, the interior design simple but warm and welcoming. We took some pastries home but dined in and enjoyed the blueberry pancakes and croque madame. Both were yummy but I LOVED the croque madame. It was so tasty and the side salad it came with was delish- just lettuce and fennel with a light dressing- it hit the spot. We had maple lattes with our meal. Never thought I would live long enough to see donuts selling for as much as $7 or $8 in a small town like Granby. That used to easily get you a dozen. Stuff tastes good, but a donut is a donut. The ambience and pastries here are both great! I highly recommend trying their Passionfruit Donuts, they were a perfect pillowy texture and the passionfruit filling was deliciously tangy. I also got a Chai Latte which had lots of warm spices and not overly sweet. The service was great, and I think any issues that they had at their initial opening have now been fixed. Just tried the new breakfast/lunch spot Julien's in Granby and had a few thoughts. First, the communal tables are great. Especially after COVID and years of remote living and remote work, it's actually refreshing to walk into a place that subtly invites people to sit together again. It feels like a small but meaningful nudge back toward community. The design is beautiful -- Scandinavian minimalism: bright, clean, spacious, though mostly wood and cement which doesn't soften the volume. The kitchen is open and inviting and the display of baked goods is impressive. That said, I was surprised that not one item was gluten-free, which feels like a miss these days when so many people need that option. The staff were very friendly, but the place seemed understaffed. It took about 20-25 minutes to get a cup of coffee, and they were out of cream and didn't know when they'd be getting more. They offered milk or oat milk instead. In total it was about $30, which I'm happy to spend for a nice breakfast -- but if that's the price point, I do want my coffee sooner... and with cream. I actually ended up leaving and going to Starbucks for coffee, which felt a little ironic given how lovely the space is. Overall: beautiful concept, kind people, and lots of potential. A few operational tweaks and it could easily become a favorite. read more

I've never had the time to wait in line at the original farm store, the new location is closer and convenient, so I gave it a try. I was second in line at 12:30pm on a weekday. I was surprised that the "sandwiches" are made ahead of time and sitting on the counter, covered, but the case is definitely open so the servers can grab your order, same with the pastries and breads. With the front door wide open, wondering about flies and other bugs? Being my first time, and not able to find a menu online to review before my visit, I did not know what the offerings were prior to viewing the menu in-store. I could have chosen to order a sandwich and remove a topping I don't care for, or I could have left. I ordered the turkey club. Since it's all premade, had to deal with taking off toppings I don't eat, which was messy to say the least, but it gave me a glimpse of the barely cooked limp bacon. Ooof, no one wants that. It might be cooked twice but it's visually unappealing and no crisp. Flavors were on point, even though I chose to eat it "not as designed (It's just a sandwich), however the bread was extremely chewy and the sandwich was very soggy from sitting for who knows how long... apparently 90 minutes or more, assuming assembly took place prior to the 11am availability of lunch items. After eating a little more than half I ended up throwing the rest out, just too messy and clunky with topping oozing all over; and for $17, cold cut turkey was a disappointment. Organic doesn't make it better. Based on the reviews, breakfast seems to be the meal of choice for most guest. I may try the bread and/or pastries one day when I feel like splurging on a $5 donut or $10 pastry, but as overcooked as they looked, maybe not...forgive me, I should say as overbaked as they look. We love the farm store so much! Decided to try the new location in town for breakfast this morning. The pastries are the same deliciousness as the farm store. Yum. Breakfast was a different story/ different menu. Ordered Julien's brekkie. Immediately when the plate was put down in front of me it was impossible to ignore the string order. Chemical smell. I expected it was the bacon and after a tiny taste it was confirmed. Yuck! It looked like the precooked bacon you can buy in a box at the supermarket. I never buy that crap and now I know why. I immediately removed the bacon from the plate but unfortunately it left the taste behind on the egg it was laying on. It's a shame because they do everything else so well. Probably won't return to this location. Hopefully they are just working out the kinks and will rethink this choice. The place was packed though so they seem to be doing a good amount of business. I'm happy for them just beware of the Julien's brekkie breakfast. It was a major disappointment. read more
