Two Words : Fruit Tea. A friend of mine took me to Juice Box around the time it first opened a few years ago and I never thought twice about it. I mean fruit over ice smothered in condensed milk just didn't seem too appealing to me. A few months ago my gf took me here again claiming I HAD to try the Fruit Tea. Tried I did and hooked I was. The drink is about a 16 oz cup of slightly sweetened tea with a hint of orange juice and fruits galore in your drink. As you slowly sip your refreshing tea you can munch on the fruits while hanging out with friends. The handful of times I've been here, it's always overcrowded with groups of friends hanging out, a long line stretching across the cafe and it's loud because of all the chatter. They serve, the fruit over ice, fruit teas, smoothies and some hot drinks and one big stipulation about Juice Box is that they only accept cash. read more

This is the COOLEST place around Bellaire and one of the few that SURVIVES in this shopping strip which was opened about 2.5 years ago (i think). With the traffic, crowds and HEAT around the New Chinatown, this place will cool you down with all kind of fresh fruit mix and smoothie you can think of... Oh and just found out yesterday that they offers fresh cuts fruits with ice-tea, just crazy! What else will they think of... Anyway, the fave has to be the combo fruit bowl with a huge scoop of vanilla ice-cream for under $5 which you can easily share with 3. The original comes with melons, mango, strawberry, honey dew on top of shaved iced and covered with sweetened milk (strawberry or chocolate syrup are optional). If you or your buddies can wait, let the ice-cream melt a little, then start digging in... fantastic especially on a hot day or after the rush in one of those grocery stores or even after a heavy meal from nearby restaurant. As for the smoothie, for $2.99, you can quite reasonable quality smoothie, they tend to put too much ice but still has the flavor... So, my suggestion is to go for a nice lunch/dinner at Banana Leaf and then dessert or cool down the meal with the Combo at Juice Box. Ah, Juice Box. Everything on the menu is tasty (though I can't bring myself to step out of my comfort zone and try durian). The drinks and shaved ice I usually get are consistently good, and the fruit is fresh. Everything is prepared in front of you, so you can see that they aren't adding any artificial flavor shots and extenders. This is really the perfect stop to make if you need to beat the Houston heat, or if you want a light dessert after dinner. They recently added a fresh fruit iced tea to their menu. The tea is so fragrant, and I love all the chunks of fruit (mainly strawberries, mango and pineapple) mixed into it. They even throw in a few ice cubes made from grapefruit juice-how fun! The shaved ice with fruit and condensed milk seems to be a favorite amongst everyone here as well. Juice Box is cash only. It looks like places in Chinatown are slowly starting to accept credit cards, so I am hopeful that they will soon. Came in today after a good hiatus. I noticed the price went up, just a tad, but it's still worth it. I love it because they not only just served us fruit with shaved ice, but they drench the ice with condense milk. I'm not much of a sweet tooth, but it was definitely just the right amount of sweetness. i usually order my usual of watermelon and mango, but today I tried something different. I got mango, honey dew, and pineapples today because watermelon has been so cheap lately that I wanted to order something worth the price. I didn't like the combination because this dish just simply tastes better when eaten with sweet fruits and not sour fruits, like pineapple. Although honeydew isn't sour, it just wasn't sweet enough. Come with a big group to try all the flavors. They won't let ya mix the avocado with anything but I love that topping since it comes with chocolate, condensed milk and chocolate ice cream. I am also in love with the mixed fruit not sure how but the mango is always sweet and amazing!! No, just no. What I got was just hard ice drenched, DRENCHED in condensed milk with strawberries and mangos drowning inside. That also meant i was literally eating condensed milk covered strawberries for the next 5 minutes before I could even uncover the ice. Unlike how shaved ice is supposed to be (soft and fluffy), it's basically a chunk of hard ice that you have to dig through with a sad plastic spoon. When you buy it, it probably doesn't occur to you that this thing of drowning condensed milk costs as much as a burrito at chipotle, but it does. So just don't do it. read more

Yum! This is a great find. I had not really been a fan of those shaved ice desserts found at lots of Asian places. This probably is because they often include things that I don't like (red bean, etc). But this place has so much to choose from. There are tons of varieties of fruit desserts and drinks as well as the shaved ice options. We were with friends who already knew of this treasure. We allowed them to order for us and they got us their usual. It was the shaved ice with strawberries and mango. We were so satisfied. It was really big and so hubby and I shared one and we both were full when we finished. It was delicious. The condensed milk adds a really amazing touch to this dessert. Every time I'm in Houston, I have to stop and get my JBox on. I got introduced by friends at college, and have been hooked ever since. Growing up as an ABC kid with no plug-ins to Asian culture until the 7th grade, I hadn't grown up with an affinity for a lot of Asian foods that many of my later friends had. One of these was shaved ice, the kind you see in Hong Kong Supermarket behind plexiglass panels. If you didn't know, the traditional variety allows patrons to throw in different kinds of jellies, bean, condensed milk and syrups to make a sort of 'shaved ice parfait'. I was just never a fan...until Juice Box. These guys had the genius idea to make shaved ice appealing by pairing it with fresh fruit, ice cream and condensed milk. I can't get enough! Juice Box is by far one of my favorite places in Chinatown! It's fantastic. A huge bowl filled with crushed ice, ice cream, condensed milk, and toppings galore? It's a diabetic's worst nightmare, but if you're fine with the massive sugar intake, try this place out! I almost always, without fail, get the mango-strawberry-watermelon shaved ice. I always tell myself I'm going to try something else new at Juice Box, but I just can't tear myself away from what I know to already be so fantastic. The Hawaiian shaved ice was okay, it wasn't anything too different and was pretty pricey. I was confused w/my size option as well because I saw that there was small, medium and large and the lady just gave me an option for a large. Small comes w/one fruit, medium w/two fruit and large w/three fruit. My cousin ordered the shaved ice in a cone and she also only offered her the large size. Hers tasted way too thick and chalky, when it melted it looked like cottage cheese. Juicebox is the PERFECT place to hit during these famously-hot Houston summers. Their shaved ice is incredible, cooling, refreshing, and so, sooooo good! I always go for watermelon, mango, cantaloupe balls (the fruit balls they carve out are a sight to see in themselves), and tons of condensed milk over my shaved ice. If you need a break from the heat, I couldn't think of a better place to go. Juicebox gets a 4.5 from me. Their food, smoothies, and ALMOST everything inside their little shoppe is amazing (friendly service isn't always there and the language barrier is a little frustrating at times), but finding parking in that plaza is a huge pain in the ass. On a related note, Juicebox is hard to enjoy when it's packed with people, which happens more often than none. But if you can get over these mundane, annoying details, then you're definitely in for a treat! BRING CASH! I'm like 90% sure this is a cash-only place. Then again, if you're gallivanting in this area of Houston, you should be wise enough to always have cash on hand anyway. read more

Their fruit is REALLY fresh, and the ice cream is good. They put just enough condensed milk so that you can savor the sweetness but at the same time not overpower the natural sweetness of the fruit. I like that they give you so many options for fruit too, even fruits that aren't necessarily in season! I hope that I will one day be a shaved ice connoisseur, but I REALLY liked Juice Box, and it definitely lived up to the wonderful things my friends had told me about! I had a bit of a Juice Box obsession when it first opened in Houston, mostly because it combined all of my favorite things about the chinese dessert "chua bing." I love fruit, condensed milk (LOTS of it) and nothing is more refreshing than those two things on a bed of soft shaved ice. I would definitely recommend getting the fruit combination, which is not only colorful but also deeelicious. The service has always been nice and friendly, and very patient with me when I asked for more condensed milk on my bed of fruit. It's a really laid back place for groups. However, one word of caution - I have found that in the past few times since I have gone, the fruit is good only at certain times...maybe because it's in and out of season. Obviously, from all of the prior reviews, their shaved ice is awesome. Why? They use fresh fruit and a ton of condensed milk. One serving is enough for 4, easy. The other gem here though that I don't think a lot of people know about is their orange juice. AMAZING! I'm not even sure why it's so good. I mean it is fresh of course, but it's also got a distinct taste. My friend says it's because their juicer catches the orange "zest." When this special machine squeezes the oranges to juice them, it also catches all of the little stuffs that flies off of the orange skin when it gets mashed up and throws it into the juice. Believe him or not, but to me, it's a good of an explanation as any. Get it by itself or mix it with any of the other juices. Something about either the ice cream or the freshness of the mangos make this drink so darn delicious. My family typically gets the strawberry, mango, watermelon ice. This is pretty much those aforementioned fruits with ice cream on top. On top of the ice cream and fruit is CONDENSED MILK. You know you love it and they don't gimp on it either so its spectacular. This was our second shaved ice stop on a Sunday night Chinatown food adventure. They use both evaporated milk and condensed milk. We ordered the strawberry and mango shaved ice (with fresh fruit!), topped with a scoop of strawberry ice cream. They give you plenty of fruit, which I appreciated because I could pretend I was being somewhat healthy. I wasn't a huge fan of the evaporated milk, but that's because I'm a sugar junkie.
