Its a real local pub, as it always was, not part of a chain, One of the few authentic pubs still around. The place was redone and kept its older 1950-60's local feel which is great. Food/Drink: My wife had a Roman Candle IPA, which she said was smooth and juicy; a perfect choice for a light, flavorful beer before the game. Service: The guy working there was super nice and even chatted a bit about the area, which made the visit feel welcoming and personal. Aesthetic: The brewery has small seating with three picnic tables and two high tables, giving it a quaint and intimate vibe. It's simple but charming, perfect for a quick stop.

It was Friday night, we just saw how crowded it was downstairs at the Little Sister Indonesian restaurant. So out of curiosity, we went up stairs and found this amazing little place! It's a very intimate space, small and cozy! Perfect for a date or friends get together. There is a bar where you can sit at, or at the lovely wrap around velvet sofa. The decor is lovely, definitely played a big role in the vibe. As for the drinks, they had a pretty interesting menu of cocktails, a small but carefully curated selection of wine, also had all the traditional drinks you would want. Definitely will come back to this place for a date night!

We waited 10 minutes until we had to get someone to come serve us. We simply asked for the glasses and table to be cleaned off. Waitress #1 gave us a dirty look, cleared off the glasses and walked away. She didn't come back. We had to flag down a second waitress to help serve us, table was still dirty. She asked us what we wanted for drinks with no menu to choose from, so we asked for a menu and for our table to be cleaned (again). She gave me a dirty look, scoffed, and walked away. A THIRD waitress came to clean the table and take our order (finally). She came to check on us once, and about an hour after we sat down we needed a refill with no waitress in sight. My boyfriend had to walk up to the bar to ask for a refill, and waitress #2, who was dressed as if she were in her pyjamas at home, didn't even acknowledge him. Eventually he ordered and sat back down. She placed our drinks at the other end of the bar. At this point, we were getting pissed off by the lack of respect and service here. He asked if she would bring it to the table and she said "you ordered it at the bar, you can pick it up at the bar". He said "I'd like to have it brought to my table and pay there or I can leave." She replied "walk out and I call the cops, you've been rude since you sat down." Since we sat down, waitresses didn't give us even a glimpse of eye contact for 10 minutes and we had to go and ASK for service. Apparently that's being rude. I have never had such shitty service ANYWHERE to this degree, to the point where my boyfriend and I were both angry to the point we were shaking. Do NOT go here unless you want to be treated like shit. The typical service you'd expect at a bar or restaurant was asked for here and wasn't given, and apparently by asking for service we were being "rude".

I might feel out of place going there, but they're always so friendly and welcoming. The restaurant-bar itself is clean but plain, with bare tabletops, metal-backed chairs, and a large beer fridge sitting next to the bar. Basically, it's more about function over form. So the reason to come to El Charrua? The amazingly delicious steak, done Argentinean/Uruguayan style. It's cheap (around $16), the meat tastes really fresh, and they don't over season it: the steak is grilled with salt only (or so it tastes) and they just hand you the chimichurri sauce on the side. Plus they serve cuts of steak that you can't find in a typical North American restaurant, like entrana and asado. Although that being said, I still like their new york steak the best. Asides from the meat, the beer and wine is reasonably priced as well. If you want to experience some South America in Toronto, or you miss South America, or you want to make card-playing friends, or you want to watch some regional soccer played by clubs I've never even heard of in South America, you should check out El Charrua.
