After that, they participated in the safari group (whale watching and water activities included). The last group is the h2o group (whale watching; kayaking; sailing; more advanced water activities). At every level, they were happy and excited to go to camp each morning. In fact, they prefer to do multiple weeks of this camp each summer. They love crab hunting, whale watching, sailing, and dock diving best. The counselors are young and energetic. They keep them safe and help reapply sunscreen every day. My kids come home with stories about how the counselors paid special attention to them and how they've made new friends. I love this camp and the people that help make it great every summer. We will continue to come until we age out! Highly recommend.

The pace is chill, there's a disciplined, not regimented, routine with plenty of "non-surfing", wholesome fun (projected movies, games, guitars, skit and talent shows, in the lounge tent). You don't need to have any experience surfing, or you can be a shredder. There's always instructors in the water that are willing to coach you or you can be left to your own talents/whims and do your own thing. They bring the boards as well as lunch all the way down to the beach for the kids and instructors to enjoy (it's a bit of a walk to get down there and I assume it's easier and more convenient to bring the lunch and gear to them). The boards provided are just fine. My son had his own wetsuit and booties so I can't comment on the wetsuits. I grew up in Southern California but we live In Austin, TX. I only mention this because we can't surf in the middle of Texas (generally)! Meaning, zero experience is ok here. There's no pressure to be the best, but there's definitely pressure to have a great time! And they do! The Camp Manager, Bart, is a fantastic guy from Australia that my son loves. He and his team of chill "Counselors" keep a chill vibe that makes this great thing happen. Kudos to Jason and his entire team surf/kid enthusiasts. In a week of trying in pretty heavy conditions for a beginner and this time of year I never once felt unsafe or unprepared thanks to excellent instruction and help getting that big 9' board out and getting a big shove to catch each wave. I had only boogie boarded before and swam some in the ocean. And the last time I was on a boogie board was maybe twenty years prior. I'm now hooked and shopping for a board. Ethan was my constant coach. We had a small class so the coach/instructor to student was nearly one to one. Everyone on the staff were encouraging and really a pleasure to be around. All the campers were great to meet and talk with, laugh and surf. Great fun. I plan on attending every year. And surfing as much as I can fit in every week.

Dave, Regan, and Rhys are experienced, professional, local surf guides who scout out not just the best surf spots for the day, but also great places to eat, shop and explore. These guys are passionate about surfing and genuinely stoked to share what they know to help you learn and improve. That said, they never make you feel like a student being "schooled". From day one it really does just feel like you're surfing with friends. As a solo female traveler, novice surfer, and first-timer to California, I felt that the Cali Camp crew always had my safety, comfort, and happiness in mind. What I love about their instructional style is that they share their surf knowledge and experience, give you friendly tips on how to read the waves & do some basic moves, and then just invite you to join them in the ocean and play. I was very disappointed, and even called the camp director and went in to speak with her once as…read morewell. Despite it being $500/child, the camp wasn't staffed properly for the number of campers. My kids couldn't get "help" with their robots and creations despite multiple requests for help. When I called, I was told the project was "too hard" and "it's hard to help everyone" and it would be better the next day. The issue here is that they shouldn't have allowed so many campers in if they don't have the staff to support it. My kids still brought home creations that "didn't work" the rest of the week. On top of this, the staff doesn't stay on top of disciplinary issues - my son was hit in the face and told staff but nothing was done. We won't be back...and I get the impression this isn't isolated to my kids and my experience.

She has been working with my son, now 5, for the past two years. He has some sensory needs and she's consistently patient, caring, and understanding and moves at the pace that's right for him. Coach Michelle is the best thing that has happened to my child. She is largely found by word of…read moremouth and we have now run into countless families that have worked with her over the past 20 years (with nothing but amazing things to say). When my son started with her we had tried several group classes and he hated water and wouldn't even get his head wet. She warned that he would cry the first couple classes (both before booking and as the session started) but that it would get better. He screamed so bad the first class, I thought she was going to ask us not to come back. She reassured us that it was normal and sure enough by class 3, maybe 4, he was obsessed. Classes are 15 minutes/ twice a week. it's just long enough to keep their attention and learn something. Although if Michelle's next client is late or she has a free few minutes she'll extend the session, if the child is having a good time- this is truly her passion and not her job and it shows. We've been going for over 9 months and I have tried to move him to a group class setting just for maintenance because he can swim now but he won't leave coach michelle and honestly I can't blame him. Coach Michelle is kind and gentle. She explains absolutely everything to the kids so they know what is happening and they aren't scared. She's patient, kind, and understanding. She has built a personal relationship with my son and talks about life outside class and he talks about what he is going to tell her at his next class. We're beyond swim class at this point and i'm not sure how we'll ever leave her. luckily I have a 1 year old we'll be starting soon.
