I would highly recommend 369 surf to you and all of my friends! I booked a surf lesson for me and my cousin with them for Saturday. We met Matt at the shop at 7:40am where we were sized for wetsuits. Then we followed Matt and his van to the beach. The beach parking lot requires a minor fee for parking there. We met our instructor Will at the beach. The beach itself was practically empty and the waves were perfect! We did not have to paddle much to get past where the waves break so we had enough energy to do multiple runs. The lesson with Will was great! He gave good guidance and made sure we were safe the whole time. The lesson lasted 1.5 hours. Will left but Matt let us know that we can keep the surfboards for a little longer so we can enjoy the rest of our time at the beach surfing and implementing the lessons we just learned. I would highly recommend 369 to all looking for surf lessons in San Clemente and Orange County! read more

Had a great day with Matt and Ivan at 369 Surf. We rented 3 boards and 4 wet suits, and Matt threw in 2 boogie boards for our 2 younger kids. My 15 - and 17 year old and my wife all got up on their 1st day. I hadn't surfed in 20+ years, and they both made it seem easy. Matt is a master and so is Ivan. It was nice to have both of them work with us for a couple of hours. Ivan was with us for half the day. Showed up to the the address given here on Yelp and it ended up being just a house. So I decided to call the number to see how we can rent some surf boards and wetsuits for the day since there was some pretty good reviews about this place. When I called he said he was busy doing a surfing lesson and he was just a one man show today, which was completely understandable. He then told me he could meet us at the house around 12 to get us our stuff. It was 10:30 and we didn't want to wait an hour and a half. So we kindly told him thank you very much but we were going to try to look somewhere else due to time constraints. Once I said that he got completely aggressive... "WOOOOOAHHHHH ARE YOU FREAKIN SERIOUS!" I was dumbfounded and tried to explain myself. He then got upset and started bad mouthing other surf rental shops in the area and discredited them and said to watch out. Overall he was very pushy over the phone and tried to make me rent his stuff. But like I said I understood he was busy, apparently he didn't understand I couldn't wait an hour and a half just to get our gear. read more

If you are thinking about renting surf or paddle gear, you need to do yourself a favor and call Matt at San Clemente Surfboard rentals. My wife and I were in town for the weekend couldn't figure out what shop to use, how we should manage hauling the gear around, or even where a couple of beginners like us should go. Matt at SCS was THE MAN on all three accounts. His operation is mobile and brought us everything we needed--boards, wet suits, paddles, etc. His gear is well-maintained and in great condition. Best of all for us, he gave us the scoop on where we should go, even going so far as to pick up the gear from the beach when we were done with it. Super convenient for out-of-towners, and his prices were very reasonable. My family of 5 and I had surfing lessons with Matt & Rick @ Surf Skate and Supply in San Clemente. My kids loved the pace, the knowledge, and the safety of having both Matt & Rick in the water with them to start and after 40 minutes the whole family was on the waves! One of my idiot friends snapped my board, bummer right? My friend from out of state wanted to go surfing, so what do I do for a last minute session? Rent a board. The owner runs his shop from a small place below a plaza off el camino. He gave good directions on the phone on how to get their. He had a good selection of boards to chose from, and charged a rate of $35 for two hours, which was kinda steep, but he recommended a good spot to boot, and alas we had fun. Thanks! read more

Last minute trip to the beach. Was able to arrange my son with a lesson and the owner could not have been more accommodating. Got him in a wetsuit and on a board Son had never surfed but with some great instruction and a few pushes in the waves. He was surfing very quickly. Also a great place to rent boards wetsuits any other gear you may need. This guy is good. Son said he made the instructions easy to understand. I called in today for a ding repair on my surfboard. I live close to the state beach so they offered to just pick it up at el camino market. Awesome! When they saw the ding they said it was really small and didn't want to take my money for such a simple repair. I appreciated that a lot since 25 bucks for a small repair may not be worth it. Matt is great. The hardest part of learning to surf (or SUP) is carrying the board to the beach (or driving there with the right accessories for your car so you can put it on top because it's too big to put inside even if you have an SUV). Matt made it really easy. He's got boards, wetsuits, etc. and drives them right up to the beach. Matt met me and 3 friends (visiting from the midwest) at the beach, showed us some lessons out of the water, then took us in the water and worked with us until we were exhausted (which to be honest, doesn't take too long). The best part was he had another lesson after us, so he stayed in the water (along with a colleague) and kept pushing us all afternoon (when we weren't resting on shore). Not just pushing us with his positive, upbeat attitude, but literally helped us catch waves by pushing us until I learned when to paddle how to catch a wave myself. One thing I think is important to remember: surfing takes place in the ocean which has waves and tides and is wild. It's not like a tennis court. We talked about a few places to meet. Matt was right on to get us to the right spot where the waves would be good for learning even though it was a busy Labor Day weekend. We want to do this again! read more
