In my opinion, JP's has the best, consistent bagels in Hoboken. Their bagels are always warm, soft, and fluffy. But I mainly go there because I have an OBSESSION with their tuna fish. I gave up on JPs 2 years ago but was pleasantly surprised a few weeks ago when I ordered a turkey sandwich on a bagel and it was perfect. You know when you get exactly what you wanted? Shredded lettuce, a ton of turkey and a few slices of cheese. It came with a delicious pickle and potato salad. After that, I ordered every single Friday trying to chase my perfect turkey sandwich again, which was never made again. Last weeks sandwich had so little turkey and ONE slice of cheese. If they weren't so fairly priced, I'd probably knock another half star off. The bagels themselves are pretty good but the sandwiches are just subpar. They're a little bit sad. I got a Taylor ham egg and cheese on a toasted everything. There's not much egg and just a small piece of Taylor ham, and the cheese isn't even melted which is arguably one of the best parts of a thec. It's super hectic in there since it's such a small space and they're pumping out food. I will say though, they're pretty efficient. We really enjoy this local bagel spot, it's always packed on weekends and even on weekdays. They get a lot of business so don't mind the longer wait sometimes! There is outside seating, about three small tables, but no inside seating. We usually get whole wheat everything and egg everything bagels ($1.50/each) with small tub of cream cheese ($5) but have tried their hot bagel sandwiches and flavored cream cheeses as well. Everything is really reliable here! Not the best bagels I've had in my life but definitely hits the spot each time. It's our fave bagel spot in Hoboken. read more

Bagel was warm and fluffy. An A+ bagel. Cream cheese seemed made in-house with plenty of veggies which I like. Also had a coffee which was made to order and was very good. Shameless pricing. Purchased a rainbow bagel with white fish and was charged $11!! Rainbow bagel separately is $2.50 and whitefish is $18/lb (or $3.50 per quarter lb). Purchasing the bagel and spread separately would've cost $6. So I was charged $5 for them putting the spread on my child's bagel. Outrageous. Tried asking the cashier about this, didn't get anything but an attitude. Disappointed as we've been regular customers for years, usually only buying dozens of bagels. Tons of options and they are open at 5AM. You never realize how important being open at such an early hour it is until you need some food after a long drive shuttling family to the airport. Especially, when you get to eat all of their delicious sandwiches - I had a bacon, egg, and cheese on a croissant and my wife had an egg sandwich on a sesame bagel. We took our happy little sandwiches and watched the sunrise along the Riverwalk. Parking at this time is free and it isn't completely empty as you'll see the myriad citizens and denizen of dear old Hoboken out on the morning jogs or scurrying some small dog to do their business. It was the light in the darkness for a road weary driver who loves eating on the pier. The price was solid, very inexpensive, surprisingly so. However, some of their drinks were oddly overpriced. Hopefully they can get better distribution deals because a $2 drink sold for almost $5 bottle is no bueno. But that's a small issue. The food was delicious and tasted fresh. I was picking up my sister, BIL, and niece up from EWR, who were visiting from Hawaii, from a redeye and told them I would get them a nice NYC brekkie (and yes, I know this is Hoboken but you gotta work with what you got). JP's was the only place that was open on a Friday at 6 AM, so I called for a pickup order, and everything was ready on time. We ordered the Nova Lox Sandwich, BEC on a roll, Sausage and Cheese on a roll, and a side of hash browns. I tried a bite of the Nova Lox and it wasn't bad. I ordered the sausage and cheese for myself and to my surprise, it came with two sausage patties (unlike the the delis in NYC, which come with one patty, which is still more than enough for me - so I wasn't expecting that), but I wasn't mad at it. I couldn't finish the entire sammie but I still enjoyed it. The side of hash browns also unexpectedly came with two but again - no complaints here. I wish I found out about this place pre-Covid when I was still commuting to work, since it's so close to the Path. But now that I know about it, I will definitely be coming back. read more

JP's Bagel Express is definitely a bagel staple in Hoboken. Located close to the water, the location is definitely great and central. Walking in on a Sunday, I was not surprised by how busy it was - the line was literally out of the door. I decided to go for a staple and order a breakfast sandwich, everything bagel with eggs, cheese, and turkey sausage. The flavor was tasty as any standard breakfast bagel will be and the size was okay but not overwhelming like I strive for. Overall, there wasn't anything unique about my order but it definitely hit the spot for what I was looking for. I sort of can't decide on 2 or 3 stars, but a proper 3 is generous. Read the review and decide for yourself. Service here leaves much to be desired - for one, you better KNOW what you want, and you better order it loudly and clearly enough for everyone to hear, at a crowded counter. The person who took your order will shoo you away with a number card. The cashier will call your number to pay for your order, upon which you'll stand awkwardly while you pay in the one point of egress for the entire staff between the counter and the kitchen. But, don't give her the number card. She'll call you up again once your food is ready. (There are no signs or indicators how this all functions by the way, I learned this through trial and error.) Once your food is ready, hand over your number card and GTFO ASAP. The place is very small, servicing to go orders only. I guess you could call ahead, which is probably the smarter thing to do. The location means morning commuters are grabbing their bagels and coffees, so be mindful of your timing if you're someone who doesn't like crowds. The food itself? I see a lot of reviews saying "best bagels in Hoboken" - which tells me Hoboken has the same issue that Jersey City has - the places that make the best bagels can't afford to stay in business due to the rising costs of rent and supplies. Small businesses are pushed out in favor of major chains and franchises, leaving whatever/whoever is left that can afford to remain. With no other competition, JP's - much like Wonder Bagel in JC - is "the only game in town." Their bagels aren't going to greet you with a culinary experience, but they're better than the corporate options. Lunch options are better, IMO. If a bit pricy, their sandwiches are pretty standard deli fare. All in all, I want to support them and they aren't necessarily BAD - but they could definitely get some easy improvement wins by streamlining the chaos of ordering, paying, and receiving your food. read more

Stopped at JP's Bagel Express on Monday morning. Not really my style of bagels and the service really needs a revamp. Outside they had three small tables, but it operates as more of a grab and go. When inside, they have you order on the left, pay on the right, and wait towards the back. However, that is something that is not necessarily clear, leaving most guests lost. Crowd: Busy on Monday morning, but seemed worse because of how long each guest ended up stuck waiting. Service: Chaos. The line arrangement was not clearly set-up and not followed by staff, then guests were left to just wander causing further confusion.
