We have been regulars at Joy Luck for the last year or so. When we first tried it, we thought it checked all the boxes for you easy go to neighborhood Chinese food. We love the egg rolls, fresh veggies in most of the dishes and friendly service. We haven't dined in, but we order pickup frequently. Last night we ordered and it was the best yet. read more

Yay! We are fans. Hubby and I have been on a never-ending, fruitless search for a good Chinese restaurant in the Kingston area. We tried Sakura Teriyaki at George's Corner (never, ever, again, even if I was on a deserted island and it was my only choice), and Taste Wei by WalMart and Home Depot. We really liked Taste Wei, but when you get a hankering for Chinese, it's kind of far to drive from downtown Kingston just for that unless you're running errands. So, we took a shot and decided to try Joy Luck on our way home. What a pleasant surprise! We were there on Tuesday noon, and were greeted with a friendly, smiling face. Our order was taken quickly, and we were given egg drop soup while we waited (the best egg drop soup I've ever had). The food was freshly prepared (we could hear the utensils in the back room chopping, dicing, and stirring away), and although we ordered a lunch special, it would have definitely been enough for the two of us to split for a full meal. Hubby ordered the General (Tso) Chicken and fried rice. The food was piping hot, the General (Tso) Chicken was pleasantly spicy and had a nice, crispety crust. Served with about a cup and a half to two cups of fried rice, which was also piping hot thru and thru. I tried the Almond Chicken because I'm dieting and was looking for some chicken and some veggies. Same size serving of fried rice, fresh and hot thru and thru. I've never had Almond Chicken before, because I usually go for breaded and deep-fried, and I probably would try something else next time. I didn't know what to expect with the Almond Chicken, but it seemed a little salty to me. Again, I've been dieting with little to no salt, so it might have been salted properly, just a little too much for my taste. I could live on their fried rice, though. But, that would be silly, wouldn't it? Do you think anyone would notice? So my takeaways (sorry for the restaurant pun): Joy Luck might look nondescript from the outside, but inside it's clean and friendly. Eating in is definitely a viable option, but they also do a busy take-out business. Egg drop soup is to die for! Lots of food for the money, freshly prepared. If you're a Chinese food afficionado (snob), it may not be "authentic", or they may or may not use MSG, but if you want a hot meal for a good price, IMHO you can't go wrong trying out Joy Luck. Just moved to Kingston and spotted this restaurant, grabbed the basic orange chicken and beef brócoli with an order of fried rice that comes with pork, chicken, shrimp. It was so delicious!! The fried rice itself tasted so fresh and delicious!! I would recommend, will try other items from the menu later. read more

The first time we ate there, the food was good. The second and third time we ate there we found the sweet and sour chicken was very dry. A couple of the chicken and noodle and beef and noodle orders had very little meat in them. Very disappointed. read more

Just ate at Joy Luck and wish we hadn't. Someone said they were under new management so I was looking forward to some good Chinese food on a cold day. I was very disappointed and disgusted with everything about the establishment. First off, they had a rude waitress that couldn't explain the family dinner special. And while we were sitting there confused, she kept hovering over us clicking her pen repeatedly. Finally settled on the prawns with lobster sauce and the cashew chicken, fried rice and appetizer platter. Big mistake. The appetizers were mediocre, almost overdone. The fried rice was very dry and not good. Both entrees were super salty with huge chunks of bell pepper and onions and more salty sauce ratio than meat. We barely touched any of the food. Then, we explained that we were not satisfied very nicely and told her we did not want it and did not feel like it was fair to have to pay and we she straight up threatened if we didn't then she would call the police. We paid 17.95 for a crappy appetizer and the worst customer service I have ever encountered in my life. Beware! read more

Asian kid continued to blow his nose and spit in the trash can behind the register in front of customers during my 45 min visit. Very disgusting. To add to situation, I went there with intentions to dine in however, every table that wasn't occupied by people were substituted with their trash from visits that looked like hours prior. Happy Mother's Day to Me! Had not had a chance to come by since they reopened until yesterday, but soooo very glad we did. The choices are very limited in this area and we have traveled as far as south as Port Orchard and have found none better. The menu may be smaller now than before, but the flavors of each item we ordered were amazingly better than previously ordered. The young men now running the place were very quick, and courteous. We placed a to go order, on the chinese online order menu, the order was not received we were told upon arrival. No Biggie.....we just reordered the same thing that we thought we had ordered. It smelled wonderful all the way home, and the pleasure stopped there. The "fried rice" was just really steamed rice with a few bits and pieces stirred in, there was no fried rice to be had. Ready for the scary part? The General Tso's chicken was burnt and covered in this un-natural red sauce, and I don't mean like dark chile red sauce, I mean like fire engine red and/or candied apple red. I think it could have literally glowed in the dark, to bad I didn't think to check. I did sample a bite and regretted it the minute it hit my tongue. The bitter, acrid burnt flavor of the stuff under the scary red sauce was more than any palate should have to endure. The kitchen trash had to be taken out that evening, as it was full from dinner never eaten. The egg rolls were really just cabbage spring rolls, we actually took one of them apart and could find nothing in it other than greasy cabbage. Needless to say, we will not be returning here anytime in the future. We could have just as easily walked up to a random person and given them our $36.03 that is cost, it probably would have gone for something better at least. read more

Update: May, 2013 Having heard that they changed owners again, I've returned twice. MUCH improved. I've had the cheese wontons, twice-cooked pork, General Tso, potstickers, and shrimp rolls, and all were decent, even tasty. Nothing spectacular, but it'll sate a craving for Chinese. They get serious bonus points for my being able to order ahead on the Internet. ------------------- This is the original restaurant to occupy the space. The King Dragon leased the space from them from 2008-2012 but lost the lease in July, 2012, so the Joy Luck returned. I wasn't that big a fan of the King Dragon, so I was hopeful that the change of hands would be an improvement. It is not. I ordered the cream cheese wontons, the potstickers, and the General Tso chicken, and all three dishes were pasty to the point of being gummy. These are not adjectives one normally associates with food, let alone three such disparate dishes, yet here we are. They were pasty. They tasted plain odd. The wontons, particularly, were inedible. After I'd eaten four, my jaw was actually getting tired from chewing their gumminess. Simply inedible. read more

A few more traditional items like Barley Noodles or Salt & Pepper Squid are pretty good, but most of the items are Americanized, (old) greasy, overly sweet & gooey. Much the same as it was pre-2008. I don't like giving bad reviews but this is one Chinese restaurant I will never revisit. The taste was ok but I just didn't feel compelled to finish my meal or take home left overs. I wish I'd have gone next door to.the Axe Cafe. Food was SICK. Cheese wontons- tasted stale and sweet. *I would venture to say that there wasn't cream cheese in the filling, it was more along the lines of frosting. Fried rice, was ok... but didn't taste fresh at all. I picked all of my chicken out of the rice because it tasted underdone and looked pink. We were looking for a good Chinese place here in Kingston and are so happy we tried Joy Luck! We have dined in once and did take out twice and have not been disappointed. Everything is fresh and delicious! We love the pork fried rice, cashew chicken has tons of veggies and cashews, and the General Tso chicken is another favorite. After trying many places in Kitsap county this place is our go to. read more

I often eat here with my sisters. We all love the green handmade noodles you can get. The menu has all the classics, and a few things that are special to joy luck. The girls who serve are very young and sweet ( I am assuming that they are the children of the owners or something) the prices are standard, atmosphere is a little on the dingy side but not to bad. Good food, reasonably priced. General Tsao's was tasty and spicy, ordered with shrimp and got lots of shrimp which weren't battered before being cooked. Bonus points! Tried green barley noodles which were recommended. They are awesome! Definitely going to order that again. Hot and sour was ok, wish it had been more spicy. This my favorite restaurant in Kingston. And my favorite Chinese restaurant on this side of the water [I never take a ferry over to Seattle to eat so can't compare to over there.] I don't eat wheat and do not either red or green peppers. I always order their 'Singapore Noodles,' The celery is thinly sliced and looks like peppers. I love all the lightly cooked vegetables and thin pieces of meat. I sometimes eat it in the restaurant, sometimes I order it 'to go.' Either way I appreciate I feed myself full and then still have extra left for at least another meal. Often I also order 'fried rice,' to go with my noodles. $20 for excellent Chinese food with plenty of left overs to eat later or the next day. And I appreciate that 'Joy Luck,' is family owned. I like seeing Tony, his wife and daughter sitting at the table for a quick bite to eat before the dinner rush starts. If wondering order the 'Singapore noodles,' and fried rice. My friends enjoy General Tsao's chicken too. And the barley noodles with tofu. An excellent addition to Kingston is the 'Joy Luck.' read more

We've lived in Kingston since 7.5 years. This restaurant has changed hands several times - but I think the current owners (whether new or old ones who returned, not sure) serve nothing close to edible food. The last couple of times, the rice has been "yellow" - old from sitting in the steamer. My mom went today to pick me up soup since Im sick. I havent eaten meat since I was 13 years old (am now 40) and we KNOW to ask if there is pork or beef in a dish - and she was assured there was none - just shrimp and chicken. When my mom got back - there was more beef in my dish than anything else! When I called to complain, all they said was "your mom never asked". She knows to ask. We've given them so many tries. The food goes back and forth from mediocre to inedible. For a small town we have high hopes someone will come in and open a PROPER Chinese restaurant. Im not giving them anymore tries. Stay away. From other reviews, it sounds like some of their cooking practices are questionable too. read more

Really glad to find good Chinese food so close to home. Lots to choose from on the menu and really handy that you can order online. You also get a ton of food for a fair price. Can't comment on the service as we ordered take out but the restaurant appeared clean and inviting when we picked up the food. Will try dining in next time. Overall very pleased. read more

This is another place we've been eating at for years. Apparently it has changed ownership twice in that period, but I'll be honest the food changed so little I didn't even know it was a different place. It's just your typical Americanized Chinese restaurant in a strip mall. That's why I'm giving it four stars, even though I don't think the food is all that great. The food is exactly what you'd expect, and once you've eaten in one of these types of restaurants you've eaten in them all. One person in a review of another restaurant said that all the food here tasted the same, and I think that's close but not entirely accurate. Basically from what we've had there is food with a slightly sweet sauce, food with a more savory sauce, and noodles. For what it is it's just fine. If you want authentic Chinese food, you're in the wrong city, and the wrong peninsula for that matter. If you want surprisingly good Asian food try the Thai place down the street. Other comments. (1) For the price you get a LOT of food, and for Americanized Chinese food it's perfectly acceptable. (2) The "staff" isn't incredibly friendly or efficient, but that seems to be a trend in Kingston restaurants. read more

I've patronized Joy Luck in Port Townsend (great) and Hadlock (ok) and figured Kingston would be safe. I'm signing up for a Yelp account only to post about the horrible experience there last night. We ordered General Tso chicken, vegetable chow mein and garlic green beans with egg roll appetizer. Egg rolls were fine. Then our General chicken came with rice. We had ordered NO star spicy since our young son was eating it. It was spicy, had peppers in it and he couldn't eat it. We sat there and waited for the noodles and green beans so long that we ended up eating the chicken before it got too cold. In a way it was OK we waited so long because the chicken was fried so crispy it was sincerely difficult to chew, but after waiting 10+ min it softened. The noodles finally came after we had already eaten our chicken on our tiny egg roll plates. Many minutes later the waitress said the green beans were in the wok at that moment and I said we didn't want them any more, the timing was so bad. It wasn't crowded and they weren't overwhelmed by take out orders so I do not understand how our 3 items were staggered over a half hour. There was no good reason given as to why our dinner was served like courses. This was easily the most incompetent and least pleasant dining experience I have had in memory. read more

Let me echo JD's review. The Mandarin offerings are always tasty -- General Tso, Singapore noodes, house fried rice. Preparation is always consistent and portions are very generous. I will never eat here again. The people there were friendly but the service was awful. They messed up on my order and ended up serving and charging me twice as much as I had ordered. It was really slow service and they only refilled my water once. The food was bad. The Mongolian beef was the worst I have ever eaten. It was really fatty. The salt and pepper squid was almost okay. Even the fortune cookie wasn't that great. On the bright side, I enjoyed watching Chinese news. read more

We should have trusted the reviews. Yikes! This is not authentic, decent Chinese food. Everything appears to have been made at noon and kept warm for the day. Barley Green potstickers (that they charge extra for!) are dyed with green food coloring....seriously! Special house rice - dry and the shrimp looks scary so we didn't eat it. The mooshoo pork - the pork was minimal at best but tons of shredded veg. What a bummer..we are new to the area and we were willing to accept good food with bad service.
