Are you kidding me with this lamb biryani?!?! What have I been doing my whole life that tonight was the first time I've tried this? Now I know why they call themselves JOY! Absolutely bursting with flavor, but well balanced. The rice was cooked perfectly. The lamb was cooked perfectly. (A rare compliment, as I am Greek.) We walked in on a weekday and the restaurant was completely empty. The restaurant was dimly lit and spacious, and the service was friendly. We ordered a few dishes that came with rice and some different breads. The portions and the taste were okay. I would come back if I was craving Indian food and in the area, but otherwise would not go out of my way for it. read more

I'd been disappointed by a slew of other Brooklyn Indian restaurants over the past year, but then I got the chance to try Joy, and no joke, "joy" was exactly what I experienced upon finally discovering decent food. From my past two orders (including chicken tikka masala, chicken curry with a note to make it extra spicy (they delivered on that!), and chicken korma (what can I say? we're chicken people)), everything tasted how it's supposed to taste. (See some of my previous reviews for other Indian joints, where I express frustration in places making curry uncharacteristically sweet, as though they substituted tomato paste with ketchup-- it is not supposed to taste like that, ever.) Additionally, the service at Joy is always quick, polite, and accommodating. We usually order food for pickup since my bf lives close by, but I'm sure we'll get around to dining in one of these days, and I look forward to it. read more

As a Pakistani-Indian I am so impressed with their food... we got the Chicken Biryani, Butter Chicken (came with white basmati rice) and Garlic Naan (which we ordered more of because it was delicious)!!!!! I have tried so many different types of biryani all around Long Island and some places in the city but haven't found any as good as my moms... until this place. Super flavorful, good amount of spice, rice was perfect, chicken cooked perfectly... damn wish I took some to go! Butter chicken- ok i knew it was an Indian Restaurant so the butter chicken HAD to be good but WOW it was beyond good! Creamy, flavorful, smooth, it tasted home made and delicious. I feel like butter chicken has been altered so many times all around New York that it doesn't taste authentic anymore but not this butter chicken. Give it a try!!! Garlic Naan- SO GOOD. I'm always jazzed to find delicious and affordable Indian food in the area! Ordered for pickup. Their lunch specials come with an entree, rice, appetizer, and a bread option. I did lamb vindaloo with veg samosas and garlic naan. Also got a chicken tikka appetizer cuz I'm a fat ass. The lamb could've been stewed a bit longer cuz it was a little tough, but good portion sizes. Great sauce for dipping naan. Everything else was on par with the other Indian places I frequent in the area. When I went in, the place was completely empty, though tables were set. This is my favorite Indian restaurant in the area. The special has a very generous portion with 1 appetizer, 1 entree, pita bread and rice. The special usually lasts me for 2 meals. This food is authentically Amazing 15/10. I've been coming here for 15 years and the food is always top tier AND CONSISTENTLY bomb. I would've been depressed about ordering the "Special Dinner for One" on a Saturday night, but that's not nearly the most pathetic thing about my life. Also, it was damn good. Sure, they forgot my bhuzia, but $16 (plus tax & tip) for lamb curry (with basmati rice), a pint of mulligatawny, a couple meat samosas, naan and all the little sauces...you could do a lot worse. I've had their food before and it's very good, but I had a horrible experience with an order and their owner tonight and would never recommend this place out of their complete lack of customer service or common decency. I placed an order through their recommended delivery app around 6:20. I called them an hour later to check on the order and said it was already delivered. I have a door man and there if they had delivered I would have been buzzed. I called back to say it wasn't here and he insisted I was wrong and wanted to speak to my door man. He then yelled at my door man like we were somehow lying. Instead of apologizing or acknowledging that his driver may have delivered it to the wrong apartment, he was indignant and rude to me and my concierge. My concierge had to hang up on him because the owner was shouting over him and not having a conversation. The man never tried to admit a mistake could have been made and now I am left trying to cancel the order with the delivery company so I can be reimbursed. I will never order from this man again. I did nothing wrong to be treated so rudely other than tell him the simple fact that the food never arrived. read more

If I could give zero, I would. This use to be such a good delicious restaurant. This has to be a new chef, point blank. The lassi is bitter and beyond nasty. I ordered four and couldn't even drink 1/2 of mine. My husband doesn't like to waste food so he decided to take the other 2 1/2. The chicken tikka masala is just bad. The chicken was tough, and the sauce as bland as white paper. What saved it for me was the chutney and I was only able to eat around three pieces before passing on the rest. The chicken biriyani that I purchased for mum wasn't bad, but it's spicy for those who can't handle spice. The sesame naan bread would have been good if all the sesame seeds didn't fall off as I was breaking the bread to dip it in the nasty masala sauce. This review is for delivery. As anyone who follows my reviews knows, I am a very harsh critic of Indian restaurants and am hard to please. I was really pleasantly surprised by Joy, and am wondering why it took me so long to try. Overall, the food was really good. We tried the baigan chaat, which was excellent and arrived still fairly crispy; the tangy gobi, which was a little too ketchupy for my taste and needed more heat, but still was good; the Madras shrimp, which was just ok - I liked the sauce - but was basically what I expected it to be (husband's choice); and Rya Walee Aloo, which was banging. We also got an order of poori, which didn't travel as well as the other food, but still was really good. I will absolutely order from Joy next time I am too lazy to cook for myself, and need to go and eat there to get an honest take on the food. read more

I judge an Indian/Pakistani/Desi restaurant by its Chana Masala/Chennai/Pindi Chenne/Kwality Vale Channe. Joy did not pass the test. In all fairness, I am used to my own Rasedar Channe recipe. YET...I asked Joy Indian Restaurant to specifically make my Garbanzo beans/Chick peas/Chana Masala "spicy" and it arrived bland. What's up with that? The naan seemed slightly WET. The Baingan Bharta/Bhurta was DELICIOUS after I added my own spices to it. It was sad that I asked for Mango Chutney that I was charged for, but never got. Also annoying, was they only accepted cash. The food, price, and service was just OK. I did not get as much food or good customer service for the same price as I do at other Desi restaurants within the same physical proximity. Keep in mind I ordered take-out/delivery during the COVID-19 Coronavirus crisis when everyone is stressed out (mostly because I trusted Joy to not get people sick or F#C& up my order). This place is wonderful. Came here with my boyfriend for a Sunday brunch. I ordered my new favorite Baingan Bhurta and my boyfriend had Crabmeat Pathia, both were amazingly delicious. The food came in large portion and was very fast. I usually eat everything at an Indian restaurant, but the portion was larger than average that I have to take some home. Our server was very friendly and came to check on us often to refill our water. When we leave, we forgot our leftover food, and he came outside to find us and gave us our box! That's so nice of him so that I can have an afternoon snack of leftover Baingan Bhurta! Too bad we live little far from here and is out of their delivery range, but I guess we can at least come every Sunday for brunch from now on :) read more

This might be the best Indian food in the city. I've ordered delivery and eaten in the restaurant. The delivery is not the cheapest in the neighborhood but it's fast and the portion is decent. When I want food that's comforting, yummy, and won't make me feel fat, this is what I order. I dined in during the afternoon and the restaurant was empty except for us, but you shouldn't let that stop you. The service was great, and the dine in portions are a little bigger than the delivery. I had the Chicken Malai, which is an amazing, light curry with coconut flakes in it. He had Vindaloo, which was also a hit and contrasted my dish nicely. The lassi was also very good. They gave us a small free dessert with the check, which seems to be standard for Indian in this neighborhood, as well as something I can only describe as kind of like extremely flavorful Nerds candies. It was a great experience and we'll definitely be back. I've also tried the tikki masala and it's the most interesting masala I've ever had. I'm giving this one a 3.5 star review. Ordered several dishes, including the chicken curry, tangy gobi, chana saag, salmon tikka. The food smelled so good and was packed well. The restaurant even confirmed with us the order, which was a nice touch. I was so ready to love this food. The main problem was the spiciness of the food. We asked for the food to be extra spicy, and instead it was the absolute opposite. I can't understand how an Indian restaurant can make food *that* low in spiciness. I understand that some people can't handle spiciness, and this restaurant isn't located in an area with a large Indian population, but surely when people order Indian food the base level of spiciness would be more than no spiciness at all? And as we asked for it to be extra Indian spicy, that is more puzzling. Otherwise, the dishes were decent, but I think there's room for improvement. read more

I've ordered delivery from this place about 4 times. So far, they've been able to get my order delivered in under an hour. Their food always arrives hot, delicious and filling. They give a full pint of your entree plus about the same amount of rice. Some places give papadum for free, but this place charges $1.50. It's still worth it. It's 4 pieces. I'd give their delivery 5 stars. Today was the first day I went into the restaurant with 2 friends. We ordered 2 appetizers, 2 sides and 3 entrées. One of my friends ordered a lassi. Everybody seriously enjoyed the food. The lassi was not so great. My friend accidentally forgot to tell them not to add salt so she ordered a second one without it. She was willing to pay for it, but they took the first one off the bill. This would've been great, but the second lassi was tasteless, watered down and undrinkable. We have a feeling our waiter did not understand what she wanted. I have to admit, the service was not as good as I had hoped. Our water glasses were dry for most of the meal and 2 of our side dishes came out mid meal. We were the only people who were dining in the restaurant. Two other people came in for a pick up and they were doing a lot of delivery. There was a TV on in the back of the restaurant that played Indian music videos. Initially, the sound was low and didn't bug us, but halfway through our meal, the volume got turned up really loud and we were basically yelling over it. Since I would rate their restaurant experience 3 stars, I decided to take my average and give them 4 in total. I'm being nice. I think next time, I'll stay in and eat on the couch. read more

It's a spicy curry that comes sizzling in a wok like pot. It was really tasty! The spices used really created this explosion of flavor with every bite. During my stay in Brooklyn, I got rather intense cravings for some tikka masala. I looked around on the interwebs to see what was close -- my target had been acquired. I made my way to Bombay. I was very hungry. I started off with a mango lassi, the spinach soup and vegetable pakoras. The soup was verrryyyy good, I gulped it all up very happily. The pakoras were also tasty, albeit very fried and greasy. Still tasty though. The mango lassi was delightful. Finally, I got my chicken tikka masala with some rice and cheese naan, and it was mad delicious. The rice was fragrant and buttered to my liking, the chicken tikka masala was great, and the cheese naan was also good, but was kinda devoid of cheese (I like things to be oozing with cheese). At the end they brought a complimentary dessert that was sooooo good. I do not know what it was but it was so tasty and refreshing and a really lovely note to end on. Overall, I really enjoyed this place and the employees were also super nice. Check it out for sure if you're in the neighborhood. read more

Everything is so good ! The mulligatawny soup is a must with naan (I get the onion) All the food is flavorful and cooked nicely. For dine-in the restaurant allows BYOB which is nice. The lamb vindaloo is a go-to if looking for spicy. The chicken tikka & chicken bhuna are also great. read more

Stopped by here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. The weather was good so they had the doors open. They have a decent amount of seating. My wife and I were the only ones the whole time we were there. Indian food doesn't seem to be very popular in Brooklyn! The service was okay, there was only one guy managing the front of the house and serving us our food. He was too attentive, we didn't have a water refill for quite some time and he disappeared to the kitchen for quite a bit leaving us alone. They have an extensive menu. We chose some of their vegetarian fare. The food came out to us in good time and was well prepared. I'm usually a bit fussy when it comes to Indian food, but I have to say the did a great job. Worst worst worst food and packaging! I got a takeaway and the entire curry spilled in the plastic bag, making other food foggy. I paid $28 and it wasn't even worth for a cent. Undercooked naan, hard cottage cheese cubes, stale and re-fried samosas and rude behavior shown by the lady available at the counter.
