I don't know what happened but this place used to have good food. Was always our go to place. Decided to get a carne asada burrito. $15 for meat and a tortilla??? I could have bought fresh carne asada & tortilla for a little more and cooked my own. The meat was sooooo dry, chewy and very bland. read more

This small restaurant has been here for a long time and I have tried thier tamales in the past. I ordered the beef tamale and it was as good as I remembered! How does a Mexican out of beans?! It was in the morning too. Also I ordered a quesadilla and the cheese wasn't melted. After that visit I stopped going. When you compare the portion size for the price for the other Mexican restaurants in the area.. it's a miss. They get bonus points for being open all the time but I won't say they specialize in something. If anything their specialties the fact they're open 24 hours. I was looking for a burrito with all the protein! I asked about the chicken burrito. They said it was shredded chicken cooked in onions, peppers and tomatoes. Yum, right? NO! This chicken was horribly overcooked and dry. The over salted pico didn't even help. Specifically, if you're serving a burrito with no cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, etc, the chicken needs to be cooked so that its tender, moist and flavorful. Jose's always seems to be busy. It's a friendly ambiance. Nice service. On the expensive side for what you get. Two burritos and two fountain drinks was $30. I'd expect $20-25. The California burrito and breakfast burrito are hefty sized with lots of meat, but not exactly flavorful (no spice/heat, no sour cream, little guacamole.) The carne asada fries were middle of the road. I've had worse and I've had better. I might go back if I was looking for a means to an end when it comes to a burrito craving, but I'd definitely not go out of my way for Jose's. read more

The only thing I ever used to get here was the Jose Especiale circa 2009-2010--a massive burrito baby that was like 3 burritos in one. Moved away and didn't return to north county until 2022 and just never ate here again until a couple weeks ago. I had honestly forgotten about them, even though it's literally down the street from my current house. Anyway, husband had a hankering for a Cali B and I got a Bean and Cheese Bureet for my daughter and gah damn were they GOOD. I don't eat this type of food as often as I used to as a 30+ year old body just doesn't process greasier foods the same way they do in your teens and 20s. Sad times. I've been here before but thought it was time to write a review. This is a typical taco shop and geared more towards "order & go" than eating in. But of course, during the Pandemic it's all to-go orders. On our most recent visit we ordered a Carne Asada Quesadilla, Bean & Cheese burrito and hard shell chicken tacos. The food quality is just about as good as any other taco shop. Their refried beans are very good as are the tortillas they use for the burrito and quesadilla. I would say the meat in the carne asada is better than most taco shops and the chicken in the tacos is nice chunks of white chicken breast. And their red hot sauce is amazing! I hope you like it really hot and spicy because that's what you are going to get! The downside: the cheese seems like something "synthetic". By the time we got home, the cheese still hadn't melted in the bean and cheese burrito and this wasn't a temperature thing because the burrito was plenty hot. And like so many other taco shops, they really scrimp on the cheese. The quesadilla they must have only used a few shreds of cheese. Unlike the bean & cheese, the quesadilla cheese had melted but there was SO little of it you really don't taste it. For that reason alone, I recommend against ordering a quesadilla. Very disappointing. The chicken tacos were good, but against, they are extremely frugal with the cheese! They use Styrofoam containers which I thought had been banned in San Diego County. Even if they are exempt (which I doubt), they need to start using recyclable containers. And I have checked, it only costs them a few pennies more per order so it is NOT something that would cost them more. If they raised prices on everything by 5 cents (which the average person wouldn't notice) it would cover the cost of using recyclable containers. And they charge extra for using a credit card! In this age of the Pandemic, I do not want to carry around or use cash that has been handled by so many other people. We are supposed to be in touchless payment system with the pandemic and this store wants to punish people for being safe. I guess it shouldn't be a surprise since the person cooking the meals was wearing his mask below his nose. Last, only after we had left did we discover they didn't put any napkins in the bag! Seriously!?! We have to ask for napkins? They probably charge for those as well. And when we asked for the red sauce, they only wanted to give us one for this entire order. We asked for four (one for each item) she looked at us as if I had asked for 20! Overall, decent food if you are hungry but there are many other better places that don't charge more for using a credit card, use recyclable containers and don't hold back on napkins to say the least. read more

I think this place is legit, my wife doesn't love it for some reason but it's also the closest Mexican joint to my house which makes it a go too for me haha. I typically get California burrito w/ guac (I believe it comes with quac or sour cream) Good size, good price, good hot sauces (both red and green). I have been going to this taco shop for 3 years and found a thumb tack in my food 3 weeks ago. After 3 messages the restaurant manager called back and was very nice (which I found out today is the owners son). He was apologetic and agreed to give me a token of apologies let's just say. I return today and was insulted beyond belief at the actual owners accustation's to me and my character. She said they don't use those tacks in the store, and made me feel like i was lying. I had a witness from work see the actual tack and photo it. She then complained in the picture it was not even dirty i washed my hand and tack and was trying to not vomit. I thought it was someone's earring at first! The staff is amazing and the cook. The son was very nice. I WILL NOT RETURN DUE TO THE WAY THE OWNER WOMAN MADE ME FEEL.
