HIDDEN GEM! My beautiful coworker suggest we grab lunch here and it did not disappoint! Easy to miss but a must to find. FOOD- 5/5 I got the Call Me Spicy as a mystery pick and it was so good! So glad they picked this one for me! It tastes better than it looks. It's sweet and salty with the perfect amount of spice. It's got crunch and it's just overall a perfect burst of flavor... not to mention the waffle is gluten free SERVICE- 5/5 the people we encountered were so friendly and welcoming AMBIANCE- Small but they took advantage of the space they have! This place is very hidden in a corner, super easy to miss. Layout is a little awkward, limited space, hard to gauge who has ordered and who is waiting. Even though there was quite a few people working... items to take time to make, so expect to wait. Felt a little pressure to order right away, kind of wish I could have ordered more. Only ordered a sweet and savory waffle.... But sitting there staring at pastry counter, I had serious regrets. They say they offer coffee.... But if you're a coffee snob like me, you'll be disappointed. It's a coffee vending machine. The kind you push some buttons and can get coffee, latte, etc... so I went somewhere else for that. Got the egg and bacon waffle... was a little surprised it was hard boiled egg, but I guess they need items that are fast. I really needed to be seasoned. Salt and pepper would have made all the difference. (Was a little grossed out to see a random plastic cleaning bottle (which is probably not considered food safe, being used to squirt lemon juice on it) The berry waffle was much better. Tucked away in the corner of an outdoor Maryland shopping complex, this no-frills bakery may not look like much, but they're cooking up some of the best, most unique gluten-free waffle sandwiches. Josephine's waffles are made with a blend of buckwheat and other ancient grains, which give them a slightly savory, nutty flavor and lighter, airier texture. They're generally super thin, so they have a great crunchy outer shell that acts as the perfect vessel for whichever sweet or savory filling you decide to add. I opted for their banana and hazelnut chocolate spread, which was fantastic. The creamy banana and hazelnut spread was just sweet enough to counterbalance the crispy, slightly savory waffle -- it was truly the perfect combination of flavors and textures, and I'm genuinely so impressed that it was gluten-free. They have a ton of other gluten-free and vegan baked goods, so I'm sure I'll be back very soon. There isn't really any seating inside, but they do have one small table outside their restaurant that you can sit at if the weather is nice. We'll my friends, no need for a 3 hour drive, just hop on down to Saint Elmo Avenue in Bethesda. Josephine GF recently opened and I had the pleasure to visit with my granddaughters this week. They both opted for the Berry Supreme, which had fresh fruit, whipped cream, and nuts. Don't worry, your waffle toppings can be customized to your taste. I don't know what the secret recipe is, but it is out of this world! My granddaughter said they should win an award for the taste alone. I whole heartedly agree. But, I haven't told you the best part... they are gluten free and are also approved for those who have Celiacs disease. Josephine GF is named for the owners daughter, who needs a gluten free and celiac approved diet. I feel like we discovered a Diamond mine. Each waffle is made fresh as you watch....The owner is as nice as can as can be. There is a bakery case full of brownie blondies and other gluten free baked goods. Lovely waffle shop hidden away on St Elmo! Their waffles are freshly made in store, and they make each combo right in front of you. Their waffles are gluten free and there's a fun assortment of pantry goodies/snacks for you to peruse while waiting for your order. I happened to swing by to see that they had their breakfast menu available, on top of their usual savory and dessert items. Note that for the breakfast orders, even though it doesn't say so in the menu, you get a complimentary coffee! It was a bit of a wait since it seemed like there was only one person making the orders while another was taking orders. The waffle was made fresh when I ordered. The mini loaf however was phenomenal - absolutely nailed the texture of this bread, you cannot tell it's GF. Nice crispy outside crust and soft on the inside. Paired perfectly with a little kerrygold butter. I also really enjoyed the muffin, good flavor and it was a light and springy texture. Service was great, the ladies working were very friendly and helpful. They had a few market items consisting of different jams, 3 types of GF pasta from Italy, house made cranberry croutons, GF pretzels (flavored and regular), single serve bags of chips, and a few other items. Oh my gosh!! If you see a bad review, ignore it! First of all, I'm gluten free and my husband is not. My husband is a bit of a food snob and kind of hard to please when it comes to restaurants. Here is what he has to say - if this was near us, I would eat here a lot and I don't care that it's Gluten free. It's so good! Literally, the flavors and the texture and consistency of the waffles and bread and sandwiches and wraps were amazing! Some of the baked goods were better than others. I could tell some were dairy free from the flavor, but I didn't mind. The cranberry bread is incredible! The coconut macaroon is delicious. The waffles are so good and the bread for the sandwiches is perfect! The bacon sandwich and salmon wrap are both amazing! I seriously can't say enough. We spent $70 and tipped ups guy $20.
