Middle-of-the-road Tex-Mex fare. There's better Mexican food in the Kansas City area, but worse, too.

Went there today at about 4, had to wait on server, turned out to be one of the managers, as she had no black uniform shirt. We ordered drinks and aps, they showed up ok, then we waited and waited for someone to get our order. My wife had to go ask the table seater for a waitress. The gal finally shows. We order, asked for beans with our meal, no rice. We got rice. Food took a long time to get there. My wife stopped a worker who had a tie on, pointed out to him how dirty the carpet and empty tables were in our area. He put a couple of workers over there cleaning. Asked busboy for a couple of doggie bags, and he finally brought our check Paid cash, left no tip, fist time in decades I've done that. We love other Jose peppers, but, this place needs someone to come in and crack the whip. Poor, poor service. read more

We go here a lot as some of the food is pretty good. We typically go here for the Pollo Magnifico which is really great. The rest of the food is about typical of your standard Mexican food place. The service is highly hit or miss at this location (much better at there other locations). Beware of their horseshoe shaped booths if you have more than two people in your party as they are extremely small and uncomfortable if you have more than two people. The margaritas are better than most of the Mexican restaurants in the area. Parking is always a major issue especially since they expanded the restaurant but at later hours you can usually park across the street in the medical building parking area. Waits can be pretty long here as it is a popular restaurant so take advantage of the call ahead seating! read more

Had dinner on Sunday evening with my wife, We both had items that were listed as their specialty dishes.....tasted very good. Part way through my meal, I find a foreign substance, like rubber tubing. I had the waiter come over, he agreed that it looked like a piece of rubber & contacted the manager. Once the manager came, he proceeded to tell me that it was just a piece of fat.....IT WAS NOT! he did offer to get me another tomalee, but I chose to just let it go. The longer I thought about it......the more I felt like something should have been done or at least an apology.....NOTHING, not even an offer to comp the meal, just passed it off as no big deal. He even stated that this dish was one of the meals they prepare fresh there.....!!!!! Food tasted good, waiter was fine, quality control & attitude of management...........eat hear at your own risk. I'm personally a huge fan of Jose Peppers (especially the Jose Peppers in Briar Cliff), but this particular Jose Peppers seemed to be slacking in comparison to other locations. They took an hour and fifteen minutes to get our meals to us. That being said we had a party of 13 and they were fairly busy. Everyone in my party still thoroughly enjoyed their food, especially the queso dip. Their queso dip is also really cheap if you have a coupon or purchase an entree. I ordered the BBQ chicken sandwich (yes I know bbq at a mexican food restaurant is weird) and it tasted really good. In comparison to other locations, this Jose Peppers was definitely lacking in service. That being said they may just have had an off day. If the opportunity presented itself I would probably give them the benefit of the doubt and try this location out again, even if it were only for their queso dip:) read more

My husband and I come here about 3-4 times a week. We always have great service and the food is always to die for. When he says "Let's go to eat." He knows I'm gonna want to go to Jose Peppers. I'm addicted to it!!! Love me some Jose Peppers..... Best chips and salsa in town..... Staff is always great. We have had Shelby, Porshe, Kasey and Brian and they all were winderful. Best Mexican in Lee's Summit! The margaritas are cheap especially on Monday and Tuesday. And the food is great usually alternating between Pollo Magnifico or Guacomole enchiladas. Both are equally delicious as is most things on the menu. read more

I live just a few blocks from Jose Peppers. I was introduced to Cactus rill in Leawood several years years ago and loved the food and service. The opened the Lees Summit location as a Cactus grill and I would rate the both 4 star. They changed the name to Jose a Peppers a couple years ago. Still great service. Have I had poor service at times? Yes. But it is rare. We eat here 3-4 times a month. I don't understand the 1-star ratings. read more

Jose Pepper's is solid Mexican Food. Salsa is good. Food is tasty. Service is good. We've always had a good experience eating here.

My wife and I decided to have some dinner after Christmas Shopping, and unfortunately we chose Jose Pepper's. After WAITING to be seated in an empty restaurant we were led to a table that well, to put it kindly must have been mistaken for a clean one to a blind man. I decided to be daring and order food from here. That was the second mistake, just ask my toilet. When the food arrived I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had at least removed the Swanson Hungry Man box. After taking a bite I realized that they hadn't. They had just ground up the box and mixed it in with the beans and what I think was rice (I hope). At this point we were committed because in this overpriced, glorified Taco Bell sending it back to the kitchen where spit is probably a widely used seasoning was not an option. After eating what I think resembled an enchilada I came to terms that Jose Peppers needs to have a local health inspector permanently stationed somewhere in the facility. Pushing my full plate to the edge of the table did little to show the waiter or the GM that there was an issue. Instead I was greeted with a check and probably some type of third world disease. This restaurant is abhorrent and should be, not closed down, but condemned. If anyone from the Jose Peppers corporate office is fortunate to see this review please feel free to contact me. Great espinaca dip and I love the salsa. I wish they had more vegetarian options though beyond sautéed vegetables and quesadillas. I've noticed they don't card on alcoholic purchases though or ignore when younger customers buy drinks and pass them to their friends. Seems like a liability and a bit irresponsible. The younger staff seem intimidated by young adults. Overall though I'm a fan and a loyal customer. read more

I recently had lunch with friends at Jose Peppers in Lee's Summit. I had never been there before but am a big fan of (American) Mexican food. The chicken and avocado enchilada was wonderful; I ordered it on a flour tortilla instead of the corn tortilla which is standard. I was not too fond of the rice or the refried beans though (thus the reason for 4 stars instead of 5). The white queso dip was fantastic - as was the salsa. I base my opinion of Mexican restaurants on the chips and the margaritas. The chips at Jose Peppers passed the test - they were very light and crispy. Unfortunately because it was lunchtime, I did not have a margarita but plan on returning soon to test one. Our server was great. read more

Normally I am a big fan of Jose Peppers in Lee's Summit. Today, Christmas Eve, was a disaster. It was apparent when I entered the restaurant that the heating system was not working. Everyone was wearing their coats! I should have trusted my instincts and walked away. I did not! The dining area was uncomfortably cold and the service was poor as well. As a customer I had to ask what the problem was with the heating. My point is that there should have been a sign outside the entrance informing customers of the issue. There was not! Normally, Jose Peppers is one of the most popular restaurants in Lee's Summit. In the past their customer relations have always been good. Please, in the future inform your customers! This place smelled like literal sewage when we walked in. I don't know if there was a leak, dead animal/human or just a bucket of dirty mop water. Our server was antisocial as heck, and didn't invite much conversation. The food was edible, but the chicken on my salad tasted like a lime-flavored glue stick. We got a polite drive-by from a manager after the server closed her deal, which didn't include a goodbye or thank you. Buffalo Wild Wings next time. read more

I had dinner there with my daughters. It's not my favorite Mexican place and I rarely eat there. Tonight reinforced my generally low opinion. I had a frozen margarita that was too sweet and one of the worst margaritas I've ever had. My daughter's tacos arrived cold and we had to send them back. I had the steak enchilada with charro beans. It was like an orgasm on a plate! I love the reasonable price of the espinaca. The regular salsa is fresh and tasty, and had flavour besides cilantro, unlike many competing restaurants. The food was hot and fresh. The sauce on the chicken mushroom burrito was delicious. I love the lunch menu prices and portions. The service is so fast and friendly. We were so impressed with the teamwork of the servers and even management staff we had to tell them. Even when our server was busy, another one grabbed our entrees, hustled them out piping hot, & refilled our drinks! Thank you guys, we'll spread the word and be back. read more

I have always been a Jose Peppers fan since I found it 20 years ago after moving here from San Antonio. Can't best the chips and salsa or the espinaca anywhere. Sometimes this one in Lees Summit is a little on the lacking side with service, my favorite is in Belton but we eat here at least once a week. read more

I just can't get enough of Jose Peppers! Love the food, especially the carne burrito! The espinaca is to die for. I fight my family over the bowl every time. The servers are always exceptionally kind and do a wonderful job of taking care of my family. I also heard last week when I went in for lunch that they are going to expand this particular restaurant and do some renovations!! i've live in wichita..and i dont know if you guys have just had bad experiences at the ones in missouri...but the ones here are GREAT! ive only had one mess up there and we go there WEEKLY! and the mess up was i dont like beans and asked for double rice and i got beans in which the manager was called over by the lady who brought our food out and he gave me my meal free. ive never EVER had a long wait time maybe 20 minutes at max even when their busy! and their espinacha cheese sauce isn't velveeta..ONCE AGAIN im in wichita..so maybe the people who own that resturant are different. but the jose peppers here are TERRIFIC! the very first time i went there the waitress was AMAZING and she even boxed my food up for me and wrote a nice note on top of the box. she gave us good suggestions on what we might like since we had never been there. we've ALWAYS had a GREAT experience at jose peppers..it has to just be that store..cuz the ones here are fantastic. and just a side note..not trying to start an arugment or anything but if you eat chicken your not a vegitarian...just saying. to put it simply you dont eat red meat. no biggie just sayin..if you eat ANY MEAT your not a vegetarian. period. read more

We recently visited this chain for the first time ever in Lee's Summit. It quickly became our new favorite place for Tex/Mex. There were many friendly servers. Our server, Savannah, was absolutely great. She happily explained the rewards program (which is generous) and signed me up with a card on the spot so our visit could be counted. We absolutely loved the Espinaca which is a white queso dip with spinish. The chips are the wonderful thin crispy ones we love and so rarely find. The salsa is not terribly spicy (thank goodness) but very, very flavorful. I had the large taco salad. I recommend getting the smaller size if you're going to be enjoying chips and dip as well. My husband had sirloin enchalidas. He said they were much more flavorful than at the Mexican restaurants run and staffed by Mexicans. All in all, we couldn't be more pleased. 8 meals~ one check~ 4 meals come out together ...4 did not come out. Management (woman) was on it immediately but we still had 4 polite diners waiting for the other 4 that were missing their entire meals and when they got theirs...totally hot food..ours were cold by then. The manager lady came around again and gave the 4 with the hot food that just got theres 4 gift coupon/vochers for a free entree next visit!! Great but they were the ones at our table with hot food and we were the polite ones with cold. AND we paid...we were paying all along!!! so 1/2 of us (them) got a free meal that nite when my dad paid~ free meal coupons for next time..plus hot food. It was just so awkward. I am sure she thought she was doing well by us...and was apologetic but again, awkward and made them feel bad they got 4 free meals...made me feel bad my dad paid for 8 meals, drinks, appetizers and got a cold dinner (with way too much velveeta style cheese sauce for his money & trouble. It would have been nice to just get 8 dinners all at once like we ordered..it was not that busy. sad sad sad. read more
