Went here a couple weeks ago to grab a quick dinner and I'm glad I wasn't super hungry. The chips were thick and stale tasting and the salsa tasted like tomato sauce. My chicken tacos were dripping wet and tasted like nothing. I'd rather try someplace else next time. read more

I came here with a group of five around lunch time and they were very accommodating. We were sat down at a large table and served drinks and chips and salsa almost immediately. The chips were super good and hard to stop eating. We also ordered some queso which was good but very runny so it didn't cling to the chips that's well. I ordered one of the combos with a chicken quesadilla, Cole rellenos, and rice. The quesadilla was even I wanted from one of my favorite dishes; cheesy, delicious chicken, and nice flaky tortillas. The rice was cooked really well too. It was my first time trying chile rellenos but iI enjoyed that too. I love peppers so this was a tasty option I never knew about but was glad I chose. The cheese was super melty, and the pepper had great taste. I just wish it was a bit more crispy on the outside. The other picture included is of the dish my friend ordered. She got a taco salad with steak and said it was delicious. Based on the look of it I'd have to agree. I was a bit jealous when I saw hers come out but we definitely all enjoyed eating here. Very bad service, I specifically asked for no onions due to an allergy. Food had onion and when I told the server he just laughed and did nothing about it. Talked to the person in charge and he basically called me a liar. Now I have a flare up on my onion allergy! Never coming back to this place!!! read more

The Service was horrible. I made an order and I have some health things to consider and I put that on the order so they knew and It came completely wrong. I called the restaurant and the person that answered was rude and disrespectful. Your average quick Tex Mex food! I mean who doesn't love Mexican cuisine? Everything on the menu is reasonably priced plus The chips and salsa were tasty ! The only downfall was the price of their Margaritas for the amount compared to other spots. All associates working were friendly and attentive to our needs while dining in. read more

One of our favorite Mexican spots in the area. I absolutely love their street tacos, it is about the only thing I get. The carne asada street tacos with the grilled onions, peppers and cheese. I have also had their Enchilada Suiza and it is phenomenal as well! My wife loves their bean dip with queso and is the primary reason we started coming to this location frequently. Pretty decent Mexican restaurant. This is actually a Mexican restaurant and not a Tex-Mex, but its pretty average. They didn't have anything on the menu that really stuck out. The food was good, but it took a while for our waitress to come by with the check. I'm assuming she was just really busy, but I only saw her when I ordered my food and when I asked for the check. There are only 3 restaurants I crave from Kansas City now that I'm gone and El Maguey Mexican Restaurant is one of them! I absolutely love their Burrito Mexicano and their white cheese sauce and chips. Don't forget the cheese sauce, it's awesome!!! This is a great, quick, inexpensive place to eat. It's real Mexican and I know that can be intimidating to some but, the people are nice, it's clean and spacious and you can't get better Mexican food in the KC area! LoL Their portions are big and I usually have left-overs. Sometimes though, it's so good, I just keep eating until I'm grossly stuffed. LoL... not recommended. There is something missing from this location. I think it's the cleanliness. Inside this location, I don't feel clean. I get the impression, that the seats aren't clean. I don't know why I think that. Probably cause they aren't. Nor do I feel the food itself is that great, hence the 2 stars. I stop here sometimes (my smart phone check in never works here, for some reason.) But I tend to go on east to the other independence El Maguey location. The Noland Road location lacks polish. I stop here if I'm lazy,and don't want to drive to the other location. For tacos, this is okay, they taste pretty good. Actually, but I've heard things I'm not putting on here, and every time I come to this location, I think about them. gag gag. The food is mediocre, but fresh. It's not incredibly spicy, which is fine, cause I don't like incredibly spicy. The iced tea, sketchy. I'll never order tea here again It tasted old. The food at the second Independence location, which is clean and polished, is worth 4 stars, atleast. The service is okay, sometimes slow. Sometimes my stale iced tea wasn't refilled. And they forgot my water. I might be back during lazy moments but there's a second location that's much better. I think at the Noland Road location,I'd prefer take out. This one is kind of cool, cause there's a Mexican market next to it, but I've not visited the Mexican market. read more

The service was friendly, and the food was edible and cheap enough for lunch. The salsa tasted strongly of tomato paste, to the point where I was starting to crave a grilled cheese sandwich to go with it. I'm going to go ahead and throw all my foodie cred out the window for a minute and admit to the guilty, guilty pleasure that is El Maguey. The origins of this massive chain are kind of mysterious; there are El Maguey restaurants with identical menus all over the midwest and southeast, and I've encountered several restaurants with different names, yet with identical menus and food all over the country. If ordering a "number eleven" gets you one taco, one burrito, and one enchilada--chances are you're either at El Maguey or one of the innumerable El Maguey Clones. That said, it's good stuff. Bland? Well, sure. This is an exotic Mexican adventure for that peculiar kind of suburban white people who think Wonder bread is a little on the spicy side. In other words, my parents. And that's totally ok with me, because for whatever reason, the lightly seasoned ground beef burrito is transformed into a totally awful/awesome hot mess by replacing the default red sauce with El Maguey's processed white cheese sauce. I like to call it jalapeño Velveeta. Yeah, pretty much everyone has it now, but back in the day I didn't know of anywhere else to get it. You could have poured it on just about anything and I'd have eaten it. S'truth. Granted, these days I'm more interested in huitlacoche than jalapeño Velveeta, and El Maguey's gringo-Mex food may not be the most flavorful or interesting. What it is, though, is one part nostalgia and one part good, old-fashioned comfort food. read more

If you are looking for authentic Mexican, this is the place for it! Very tasty, flavorful food and good service. I had the Burrito Mexicana,, stuffed with shredded pork. The meat was flavorful, moist, and tender. The sauce on the top was very unique, and was a cross between picante sauce, and wing sauce. Very good! My husband had the Steak Tampiqueno, and it was very tender. It did come with a large portion of cooked onions on top, so you might have them hold the onions a bit. Otherwise, the value for the quality and service is excellent. We just moved to the area from TX, and had yet to find a good Mexican place to eat. I think this is our new favorite! read more

If you Like Mexican food that is middle of the road, not at all daring and definitely predictable, El Maguey will probably fit you to a tee. But if you LOVE Mexican food -- please don't expect to be dazzled at El Maguey. We have, over a period of a few years, been to the location on Noland Road 2 or 3 times with different friends who raved about the food and told us what they loved best. Hubby and I would try their suggestions when we ordered but mostly enjoyed the company we were with and privately thought the food was run-of-the-mill and a step above eating at Taco Bell. We each ordered slightly different combo plates but found out from tasting each others' selections that everything at El Maguey tastes pretty much the same as every other thing, no matter what it is! The sauce they use is okay but over powers any true differences in individual dishes. And many things are also smothered in too much cheese for my taste. So, for my taste buds sake, we've sworn off El Maguey and have not been back. I prefer to spend my time and my dollars at some of the other very good to down-right-exciting Mexican food places here in the K. C. area. read more

I've always loved El Maguey. We came for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. I hadn't eaten anything all day. I had the El Maguey fajitas. A few hours later my stomach starts to burn, and a few hours after that I was seriously ill. But here's the thing, my boyfriend didn't get sick, and the food was delicious. I'm not sure if it was a stomach bug that I picked up or if something happened with the food. But I'm going to say it was my fault, because I've never had any issues before. read more

Been eating here for years, absolutely my hands down favorite authentic Mexican in the area. Love their chimichanga with either chicken or shredded beef. Their enchilada sauce is very yummy, especially over a cheese enchilada. For burritos, I really enjoy their shredded pork. A half order of chicken nachos probably has as much if not more chicken than the chimi, and is drenched in the most amazing white cheese dip/sauce. The service is usually fast, though sometimes the servers can be a bit slow to return when you're wanting a box or the check. read more

The location sits in a plaza and the interior had a cozy and warm Latino ambiance. The waiter was very friendly and hospitable. He was well informed on the menu and offered great recommendations that closely met what we were looking for. The food was very good. I had a carne asada that had great flavor and was cooked well. The rice and beans were fine. I wished they didn't bury and hide the steak underneath a mountain of peppers and onions as the protein must always be the hero of the dish. We ordered a round of tequila margaritas and they were solid. They seated a family right next to us so we were forced to keep it PG.
