Main Street Murpheys has changed dramatically since I was a kid. A great street to promenade, with a good variety of shops and food. This shop has wonderful ice cream with a silky mouth feel. Flavors are creative and yummy. My personal fave was the Salted Caramel... delish! A must do! read more

I was walking around Murphy's when I saw JoMa's and their home made ice cream and cookies sign caught my attention. I was craving a delicious chocolate chip cookie and I found one at JoMa's! It was perfectly baked the way I like it. Crispy edge with a soft center. The sweetness level was perfection! I would have stopped for more on my way out of town but the line was long at that point. Stopped as we walked Main St. the smell of the fresh made waffle cones was just too good. We enjoyed peach and cookies and cream scoops in a waffle cone. The ice cream was amazing. The staff was kind and they were quick with our order. We sat at the window enjoying a beautiful day. I do wish they had a few more seats outside since the outdoor seats were full when we stopped in. read more

My sister loves the town called Murphy's. She is visiting and we came to visit here with her. It truly is an adorable town. Main Street has fun shops, good wine, good food, a little river to wade in, hotels etc ...and ice cream. We stopped in JoMa's and sampled some of their ice creams. My favorite was the pistachio, it had a light refreshing sweet taste. Hubby loved the salted caramel and it was good as well. The banana macadamia was very good but just a little too sweet for the hot weather. I wanted something more refreshing. The girls in here were all very helpful and very kind. JoMa's is jo yummy! My friend and his family took me to Arnold for the weekend & this place was a must see. I heard great things about this place from the fact that the ice cream makers went to "ice cream school" to the hidden chocolates in the Cha Cha Chocolate. After trying it for the first time, I've got to say it's pretty delicious! I tried the Rocky Road (with walnuts) Cha Cha Chocolate, Strawberry, and the mixed Berry flavor. Out of all of those flavors, I liked the Strawberry & Rocky Road the best! They also have unlimited samples so you won't regret your chosen flavor! read more

I've eaten at "artisan" ice cream shops where the ice cream was expensive but no better than what you'd get at Baskin-Robbins (and sometimes not even as good). Rest assured, JoMa's isn't like that. I've come here a number of times now to JoMa's Artisan ice cream. We camp at Big Trees and as we have small kids, we usually take one afternoon to come to Murphys and enjoy and ice cream and walk around the toy store next to it. The kids always love coming here and we always find flavors we all enjoy. The storefront is typically sized for an ice cream parlor and the staff has usually been friendly. A couple of times, there were a lot of people in the store and they were trying to keep the line moving and organized, but it wasn't working well so the staff is sometimes off their polite game with that. I suggest putting out some stanchions to form a better line. Flavors vary and are almost always different every time I come. It's not the best tasting ice cream I've ever had, but it certainly is good and hits the spot on a hot summer day. I enjoyed my salted caramel ice cream the last time I came though my son who loves chocolate had one of their chocolate ice creams that had something like Hershey's syrup mixed in and he didn't enjoy it, and neither did I. As we camp at Big Trees every year, we'll be back over and over again to enjoy the ice cream here. Can't wait till next summer! read more

There's much to be said about ice cream and how much we all love it. Nothing like the smile you'll see on a kid's face (much less mine) when I take a first lick out of a waffle cone on a hot sweltering day. Upon walking the downtown strip, the sweet smell of waffle cones was strong enough to make us all want to head inside on a summer Saturday. With a sign that said "award winning ice cream," in bright bold lettering, we were sold. I was skeptical at first because it takes a lot to impress me when it comes to ice cream. Eyeing the flavors, I wanted to make sure I ordered something out of the vanilla/ chocolate norm and saw something called "Lemon Snappy aka Luscious Lemon Bar." My initial thought was, I'm pretty good at baking those-- I wonder if they could duplicate it in ice cream form? After one lick and the creamy tart sweet flavor hit my palate, I knew they hit the spot. It tasted just like a lemon bar-- only cold and in ice cream form. The waffle cone was the perfect accompaniment. Little bit of crunch and just a tiny bit of chewiness. Since I'm rarely in the town of Murphy I can't say that I'll be back soon but I would definitely recommend this to anyone coming through town. Come, be a kid again, and have yourself a cone. Before heading to Ironstone for a concert, and wanting to beat the 100+ degree heat, we stopped in JoMa's Artisan Ice Cream. The line moved quick, so decisions had to be made fast. I settled for a Mama scoop (two scoops) of their version of Rocky Road (it had a slightly different name) and Crunch Time (Heath Bar in caramel ice cream). I got my scoops in a waffle cone. The flavors were subtle - not overly sweet or artificial tasting - but hit all the right notes. We enjoyed our ice creams sitting on a bench in the shade. Definitely the perfect treat to cool down on a hot day. The prices were reasonable for the portions. They offered about 12 different flavors and a variety of options for serving: regular cone, cup, cake cone, waffle cone, cookie ice cream sandwich. Super creamy, not overly sweet and lots of chewy real ingredients to uncover. Loved the Posh Pistachio and the Crunch Time. You won't find: toppings or artificial colorings here. Waffle vessels are great, much better than others I have had in the past - fresh and fragrant. I recommend one scoop and splitting the flavor - generous serving. It's fun to get a cone here, walk around and window shop. That said, it's expensive for ice cream that tastes like the same stuff I can buy at the grocery store. For the price I would expect it to be amazing rather than okay/fine. read more

Over-priced and lacking in flavor ice cream. The only reason this place got voted "best of the mother lode" is because there's no other ice cream places around. We were told we could sample flavors at the front of the line and once we reached the front, the lady was so rude and acted like she had no time for us. She limited my boyfriend and I to only three flavors due to "the line." I get that there's a line but we can move over or you can take peoples order in line, or let them sample in line, and then serve it to them. There are nice ways of letting people know there's a sample limit or that you can't accommodate requests at the time. Unfortunately not impressive. The coffee almond fudge was delicious but baskin Robbins does a pretty good one. I was hoping the more exotic flavors would be more striking. We ordered a peach passion fruit sorbet and it was so cloyingly dairy tasting (and couldn't taste the passion fruit) even though it might have been vegan. ??? Really wish we could try flavors before splurging the $$. Maybe it was an off flavor but I'd definitely try before buying. Really wished the street had a little more variety. Groups enter one at a time to pick up the orders and then pop right back out again. I was impressed with their system and even more impressed when my brother dropped his ice cream right out front and the girl taking orders quickly jumped inside to grab him a new one, free of charge. It's worth the wait in line because you will wait but the line goes fast so make sure you wait it's only about 10 minutes from the door. I had the Carmel and Heath bar soooooo good seriously. JoMas is located in downtown Murphys California amidst a few cute shops but way too many wine stores and wineries. We drove up from the bay area thinking it would be a cute mountain town with some great restaurants and shops to spend our afternoon looking through. It seems like there's just a lot of wine stores. So if you like that kind of thing put Murphys on your list of places to visit! This ice cream parlor though is very cute and has some great artisan ice cream. When asked to explain the word artisan, it just means homemade I was told. Ok. They were packed of course on the weekend when we were in there so it was hard to read all of their flavors because it's located on the wall that people stand in front of. Not good planning in my opinion. We couldn't locate any paper menus but managed to make due by the time we got to the register. Between our group we order the salted caramel, the praline, the coconut, BlackBerry, and the tart cherry with chocolate. The only one that wasn't liked was the tart cherry with chocolate. The rest of the ice cream flavors were super good very creamy and we got them in waffle cones which were nice and crunchy. You can have your frozen concoction in a cup, cone, or waffle cone. I chose the pineapple in a sugar cone. It was very good, although it was more of a sorbet than a cream. Prices are a bit on the high side, but you are paying for fresh and quality ingredients. Seating is limited inside with only a few chairs outside, so this is a great place to get a cone to eat while walking along Main Street. You can also get pints to go for your hotel or rental. I had gone here before and enjoyed myself, but today was a different experience . 4/31 3 pm The girl at the counter was not wearing a face mask, I politely asked her to wear one and wash her hands before serving me. She does and then we place our order. She told us that she didn't wear a mask because there was a shield, I really think this is not safe as she is still handling customer's food. She went back into the kitchen and we heard her complain about me to her coworkers. Before ordering my ice cream, I tried a lot of their flavors. I settled on the peppermint (candy cane) flavor, which I absolutely loved!!! I wasn't impressed with many other flavors except for the vanilla pecan praline. I loved how smooth the ice cream was. It was surprisingly "sticky", meaning that when you pick up a spoonful of ice cream, it pulled a lot of strands behind it. Kinda hard to explain, but I wonder if there was a lot of egg in it to give it a custardy looking texture. It was still good though. One scoop of ice cream for $3.5 was plenty for one person. It was a little too much for me as it was so thick. Not too sweet though and my flavor was bursting in pepperminty goodness. YUM!! Unforunately, a downfall to this place was that you can't put on any toppings. The peppermint ice cream would have been PERFECT with CHOC FUDGE! That was the only thing missing. But otherwise pretty good. I also gave it a 3 star because there were only 2 flavors I had liked, which made it an easy choice for me, but it would draw me back even more if there were multiple flavors I liked a lot.
