There was only one employee behind the counter, and they were very patient while we asked what all the pastries were (though I wish they had labels on them). We ended up getting a slice of Opera Cake to split, and it was rich and delightful! The layers were so clean and sharp, and the flavors were elegant and balanced. Not much when you walk in but a good spot to try if you're in the area! It's in a building so kind of a hard to find location and there's actually no sign that leads you inside the building, which definitely makes it hard to find if you're not looking for it. Standard cafe items with standard pastries. Nothing too special but would definitely come back to support a small business. They might not always have everything listed on the menu. Pro tip: eat in the outdoor area with umbrellas, better ambience than the inside! read more

You know those sterile office buildings with a sad commissary where building occupants begrudgingly pay a few bucks for vending machine-quality sandwiches? Jolt n Bolt should be what these spaces aspire to! I've always walked by, but never made it in. This place doesn't have any curb appeal, so you have to enter next to the loading dock either off Illinois or through a conspicuous door off 3rd. The actual seating area is very sparse, but I like that this place creates daily menus. They serve the simple cafe staples, but with quality: salads, sandwiches, quiche, soup, and pastries. I got a quiche combo for lunch. The salad portion was decent, and the quiche hit the spot. I also grab macaroons every time I'm here. Their pastries are by Gerhard Michler, and they are all excellent, including their chocolate chip cookies. I love seeing their big, open kitchen. The place is clean, the food is not fussy, and they offer a different entree every day (pizza, burger, etc). If you need a consistent, reliable cafe for a quick lunch grab, this is the place! read more

I really wish I liked this place more... the aroma wafting out of the building always smells so delightful. This review is for their individual cakes/tarts. Why I was here // Went to buy a few nice desserts to surprise my bf with in addition to the homemade steak and some wine I was planning for a night in. Service // service was meh. The front lady wasn't too helpful when I asked questions about the desserts. Desserts // -fruit tart // this one was decent. Really enjoyed the crust and the cream was sweet but not overly sweet. Fruits were fresh. -toffee cake // beautiful presentation but horribly hard and dry in texture and bland. That one unfortunately ruined our dinner. We took a few bites and threw it away. For the price which ranges from 3-4 dollars per dessert, I feel like I was expecting more. Look for the macro wheatgrass looking landscaping on the east side of street, and enter the American Industrial Center Building. This place has a little bit of an identity issue. It's got all these fancy desserts which look like a nice patisserie, but it's this little tiny place with just a few seats. It's barely a cafe - hidden down some stairs, almost in a basement. So, take someone here on a first date, the ambience and decor will probably not going to get a second one. But, the chefs do a great job. The food is quite good, and the prices are quite reasonable. The time from order to getting your order is cafeteria fast, but the quality nothing of the sort. Wow, wow, WOW! This review is LONG Over due to the fact that I used to come here for lunch and breakfast when I interned at a company down the street from here back in 2012! I would come every morning to grab a coffee and a pastry (back when I could) and it always kicked started my day in the best way. I ordered the petit fours for my Paris Café themed bridal shower and they were a hit! Everyone loved them and they looked great on my mini pastry dessert bar! First of all this place is nearly impossible to find. You go to the address and find the obvious door, go to what looks like what should be the door to the building next to it and let yourself in even though the keypad implies you need a code. After you finally find the building entrance you have to make a couple of turns and then go down a flight of stairs. Once I finally found it and waited in line it was my turn so I ordered a sandwich off of the menu to a blank stare. The person that took my order acted so weird that the woman at the cash register noticed and looked at me, I repeated my order. The woman says "we stopped making sandwiches today". Twenty minutes finding the place, ten minutes in line and they refused to serve me. You are a cafe, you are open, you have sandwiches on the menu; just make me one! read more

I apologize for not reviewing soon enough, but this little jewel in the Dogpatch neighborhood is a must-visit. Thursdays are my favorite days, because that means Chicken Tortilla Soup. Their Chicken Tortilla soup is so delicious that I would order it without fail nearly every Thursday. My next favorite is their Chocolate Chip cookies followed by their wonderful cranberry scones and their yogurt and granola parfait. One thing to note - their granola parfait is not always available since they're almost-always sold out in the mornings. read more

Great food and great staffs. My office is located about a block down the street, so they become my cafeteria slowly. If I am not go there everyday, it will be every other day. I am addicted to them now. They rotate their menu regularly, while maintain some grill sandwiches everyday. Always a long line during lunch hour. I came across this place by seeing the sign on the side walk. I peeked in for a bit and went back to look at the review on yelp. It was kind of a hole in the wall, a real hole in the wall, that if they don't put the sign on the side walk, you will never know they exist. I went back the other day to try their food. They had spaghetti meatball with angel hair on that day, so I got that thing. The bakery display was AMAZING!!!! I'm a giant fan of cookies, and they have these giant cookies. I ordered the normal size cookies, one of each which I think they were double chocolate, oatmeal cranberry, peanut butter, and another one I don't remember. They were all good. My favorite was double chocolate and oatmeal. They weren't too sweet and very nice chewy texture. Oh! The pasta came out hot, but the taste was ok to me. I think it's how most italian pasta should taste like. I just love when my pasta has extra sweet and sour of ketchup taste in it, but no big deal, I just added ketchup and it was the best. read more

I have know these people for years and have never been disappointed with anything they produce. Both Gerhard Michler and Jolt and Bolt have been terrific sources. When our company had larger parties we'd bring in their trays of petite-fours. I had to learn not to order every flavor since i couldn't get people to stop trying every one of them and recognizing there might be someone else who might to join them! I can't help but let my finger click 3 stars. I desperately want to check 2 but no... they are kind and usually offer what you need to get the job done. A cup of coffee in one hand and a mismatched edible food item in the other. I feel as if this place hasn't gotten it right yet. The air smells like butter. I always inhale extra deeply when I go here. I can't believe it's breathable butter, but it is. Vegans stay away! If you get iced coffee, they give you a cup with ice cubes made of coffee, and you get to pump which ever coffee you want from their hot carafes over your brown sugar/half-and-half/honey drizzle dressed cubes...that's how I roll. Strange place for a business but awesome food. Not only is this business in the urban rejuvenation project that is the Dogpatch (once the hospital is up I bet this area gets a quick makeover), it lacks any signage outside the building. You have to just walk into this business building and follow your nose and one small folding sign to the food. It seems like Jolt N Bolt is a small storefront attached to a large commercial kitchen. Once there you are greeted by a small counter with pretty pastries and a large menu. My impression is that lunch items on this large menu (especially sandwiches) aren't really options but are more theoretical so I stick to the specials menu which is the smaller messier one to the right. Pick out what you want and with as few words as possible relay your selection to the hair-netted cash register lady. She has kinda a stony demeanor but maybe I've just hit her on a couple of bad days, though other reviews suggest this too. In return for this interaction and $5-6 you get an awesome meal. I've been super impressed with all the food I've had from here. Today I ate the tilapia special; a plate of 3 pieces of fish, seasoned mexican rice, and steamed zucchini with an outstanding sauce for $5.25. It was well cooked and all the components were seasoned. I still don't believe that I payed so little for a filling meal that was this good. Pressed sandwiches are super buttery and therefore delicious. The house-made soup is carefully crafted as well. Pastries and croissants from this place also pass both look and taste test. They aren't quite Tartine quality but they are pretty damn good. There isn't a lot of space to eat in the restaurant but there is a nice outside courtyard nearby. This is a good place to go if you want good food but aren't too picky about what you want that day. If you can get over the laconic (your vocab for the day) service up front, lack of eating space on nasty days, and the lack of options this place is a huge winner. read more

It's close to work! They do a very good job with seafood dishes. They know how to cook a salmon fillet very well. There is a seared ahi tuna noodle salad that is my favorite dish there. I wished they served it at least once a week rather than one every two months. Last week I had their grilled shrimp pomodoro pasta that was really tasty. Their pastries haven't helped my waistline. Buttery and flavorful. Their scones are very delicious and not dry and crumbly like I normally associate scones to be. The service is great and the prices are very fair. This Christmas season I saw the bakers making dozens and dozens of gingerbread houses all lined up on racks. First of all, damn the rest of you Potrero-ites finding these places before me! Now, I felt cool because I'm like one out of 20 people that frequent the Dogpatch (note: it's NOT Potrero Hill). I'm moving to Angola, I bet I'll get hundreds of firsts they, I'll single handedly build the Yelp community in Angola and I shall be there yelp king. They'll worship me dammit! Until I make the move, I'll be frequenting this joint. I am frequently in the Dogpatch late at night (which is so cooler than working there in the day). So I normally miss out on a lot of the neighborhood happenings because they hightail it when the sun goes down. But I do have to go to school on occasion during the day and hence I discovered this place. It's literally nestled behind our administration building, we share the outdoor patio with them. I highly recommend the $4.00 half sandwich and soup, but get a salad if they have the minestrone soup, it's sup par. Loses .5 star for the minestrone (only .5 because of the crazy selection) and .5 star for the hectic ordeal of ordering, again only .5 because the outside eating area upstairs is so great. Go! This place is ranges from good to excellent in terms of food quality. Their baked goods are fantastic, and though I eat here 4-5 times a week they have enough variety to keep things interesting. I'm a particular fan of the grilled ham and cheese (with sopa!) when they have turkey mulligatawny soup. The soup makes a delicious dip. Actually I enjoy all of their soups, which is saying something since I'm not a big soup fan. The food is inexpensive, also.
