Johnston Millwork is your place if you need a new front door for an Eichler house. Eichler is a popular style home for their minimalism, simple styles. The front door is no exception since its basically a slab of wood with no design, cutouts or windows. I could not find anything at Home Depot, Lowes, Wayfair and many google searches so I reached out to JM to create exactly what we needed. Okay, here it goes. My wife and I went in on Friday (09/20/2024) to discuss replacing a patio sliding door and interior doors (a total of 10 doors). We were helped by Martin Duran, who is also the President--at least that is what the title on his business card says. He helped us through the process and was very knowledgeable and friendly. He took down my information and said he would have a quote over to us by Monday, September 22nd. Monday came and went, and there was no callback or email. I dropped him a reminder email and followed up with him twice. A total of three weeks went by with no call or email. I don't know how these local places stay in business. We like to support local businesses, but it is hard not to call the big companies and go the corporate route. If you have time to chase Martin down at JM for your business, go for it; otherwise, do yourself a favorite and go a different route! read more

We had new French exterior wood doors installed this past summer at the rear entry of our stand-alone garage. Was having a small issue with them. Sent a text to Martin today and within 30 minutes he had some colleagues working near me stop by. They quickly diagnosed the issue and after another 30 minutes -- all fixed! Johnston Millworks also built all of the doors in our house four years ago. No issues at all. Terrific product. read more

Thirty years ago we updated our home with Johnston's doors (known then for quality work). Now...Johnston quotes over $4k for a 3'x4' basic bookshelf. Their "discount" offer was to cut the materials (seven cuts) for $2k. I get that they may be busy and prefer larger projects...the wise-guy attitude from their sales and management/president was the surprise. read more

Really unhappy my bi-fold doors from Johnston Millwork. When installed (by Johnston Millwork) the doors don't fully open. Also, Johnston Millwork rep said doors hinge from the wall, which was incorrect, they hinge from the floor. Now I have drilled holes in my porcelain floor. Very friendly and helpful staff, from owner to delivery guys. I ordered a bunch of interior doors, as well as an exterior Dutch door, and from beginning to end of process, had nothing but excellent customer service. Kevin is super knowledgeable, and goes above and beyond (big time!) to make sure the end result is what it should be. There were some issues with the Dutch door, and Kevin was extremely responsive, accommodating, and resourceful (including a Saturday home visit!), to "make it right". Very honest and reliable company, who care about customer satisfaction, and take pride in what they do. There would be no reason to go elsewhere for any millwork, hardware, etc needs! read more

Terrible quality, very poor customer service. I first used this company 13 years ago for our front door. It was not stain grade as had been specified - the owner came to our home to see it and agreed, but wouldn't do anything about it. I said I'd never use them again, but a few years later, our contractor talked us into ordering from them again. We were doing the work in phases, but wanted all the doors to match, so when I ordered the first 3 doors, I asked the salesman to make sure that the french doors that we would order later would be able to be the same style. He took some time to look it all up and assured me that it would be fine. When it came time to order the french door, he then said it wasn't possible. We had to redo a wall, and still settle for doors that weren't what we wanted. Much expense, and disappointment, and then I noticed that one of the first 3 doors had one of its beveled glass panels put in crooked. Clearly that isn't a homeowner or contractor mistake. But it had already been painted and installed, so they wouldn't do anything about it. If you choose to do business with this company - be very, very careful. Now, years later, our front door needed refinishing, and we find out that it's very difficult to refinish because it's veneer! In case you think I'm one of those customers that is impossible to please, I have left positive reviews on yelp as well as negative ones, I believe there are many in the construction business who are stars. Doing business with this company is a NIGHTMARE. Remodeling a home is stressful enough and the last thing you need is disrespectful personnel with no idea how to provide customer service adding to the chaos. From the beginning, when they initially gave me a quote with missing info that was a red flag. My emails and voicemails regarding questions on the quote were ignored for weeks. Finally I got the owner, Mike Hochstatter on the phone and said he would come take samples of my trim and re-took measurements. Days later, he gave me another quote, still with missing info. When I asked why they didn't want to quote me and work on the other doors in the house they again became non-responsive to my emails and calls. At one point an associate answered the phone and said, "oh yea, my boss said he didn't want to do your job at all, but I don't know why." I guess this company is doing so well they can just ignore customers. The owner kept the wood trim from my home he took as samples--and I live in San Francisco. He said if I want them I have to drive to Redwood City to get them back. He also said he didn't care if I gave him a bad Yelp review... So here you go Mike! Clearly you don't understand the power of social media and how people use it to research where they do business. You also have no respect for people's time and it's amazing your company hasn't went under yet. (Keyword "yet"). read more

Today I am updating a review I wrote previously. I was treated very poorly before the new owners took over. Today Kevin from Johnston Millwork actually came by our house to formally apologize for the way we were treated in the past even tho it was the previous management that's treated us that way. He was extremely polite and made good on everything that the previous management would not do for us. I will definitely shop there again and I think if you have bought from them in the past and were not happy, I would encourage you to give them another chance. I rarely write Yelp reviews, but I was really impressed with the work of Johnston Millwork in Redwood City. My wife and I needed a door replaced. After receiving a termite inspection, the inspector indicated that we had dry rot and evidence of termites around the door frame and under the threshold. I contacted a few companies specializing in doors and windows. We dropped by Johnston after a window company recommended them. We visited Johnston on a Friday afternoon at 4:30. They were patient and answered all our questions and did not rush us out the door although it was approaching closing time. We decided to go with Johnston Millwork after visiting their showroom and receiving a competitive price for the project. They completed the job today and we are very pleased with their workmanship. We interacted with four staff members. Martin is very personable, professional, and responsive. He promptly responded to my texts, calls, and emails. While deciding on the door, and other details of the materials and pricing, Matthew, their expert in this area, was very knowledgeable, patient, and responsive. We exchanged four emails with him, and he always responded within 30 minutes. Matthew also suggested ways for us to save money. Martin and Isaias brought their supplies to our house and provided a custom installation of the door jamb, moldings, and the door. Martin and Isaias are very good craftsman. We were in a hurry to get this project done. Martin was able to get the supplies, build the custom framework at our site, and install our door, which had an alarm system, within one week of contacting him. I just stopped by The Johnston Millwork office today on the hope they might be able to help me locate (or create) a small piece of wood for a 100+ year old cabinet that had been accidentally damaged. They went over and above trying to help me! They found a piece of wood that was close to the correct size and trimmed it to approximately the size I needed. Thank you JW for going over and above. Where to start with this disaster of a company? First, I worked with their deadbeat sales person Larry who took weeks on end to respond to simple requests for sizing and pricing information. The pricing info came, but late and incomplete. Emailed questions for further clarification would go ignored, weeks past. Then I heard back from the company owner Mike Hochstatter who apologized for the non-responsiveness and assured me things would be different. But, their unprofessional nature was just beginning. I made another appointment (this time with Mike) to review the project and get a new quote. He showed up 45 minutes late with no apology. He moved as though he had lead in his feet, slow as hell, as if I had all the time in the world (given that I was on my lunch break and now very late to work.) He took samples of my trim and took measurements. Then took several days to respond with a new quote. This time providing only partial information on some portions and then claiming he could not quote the doors that Larry had previously quoted for me. When I asked why, he simply ignored my emails. And my calls. And more of my emails. When I finally was able to get Mike on the phone (and simply by chance that he answered), he told me he didn't feel the need to respond to me. And he didn't care that I was going to give him a bad Yelp review. He is now holding my trim pieces hostage in Redwood City and saying that I have to drive all the way down from SF to pick them up. This family run business is a piece of crap. Go find other professionals and don't even waste your time with these bozos. read more

I wish I could give them 0 stars. JUST THE FACTS: They overcharged my wife for a custom main entry door paint job. We ordered a nice door and my wife wanted to custom paint it. David told my wife that only Johnston Millwork could paint it because that way they could ensure the job as done right. In the end, they installed the door already painted. There were some pieces missing such as trim, weather strip at the bottom and courtesy items promised at purchase such as a touch up kit. We'd call David and he was always out or he'd return the call 2 weeks later and we'd start all over again. DISGRACEFUL SERVICE!!! We also noticed the door paint job was done poorly with a lesser quality paint than we paid for. Then when we complained they gave us the name and phone number of the UNLICENSED and INEXPERIENCED PAINTER for us to deal with him. the painter came and he brought the paint which was Home Depot grade as opposed to the manufacturer paint we'd paid. I would not even recommend this place to my enemies. No one deserves the terrible customer service. We wrote a letter and after the reply we received, it was just better to lose the $2000 dollars than to deal with these scumbags any further. They are experts at taking advantage of housewives who don't have a sense of what they are paying for. read more

Martin and his team are talented, skilled, meticulous craftsmen and do absolutely beautiful work. We renovated our 1939 home and wanted to create built-ins that were in keeping with the period. They re-built shelving and our fireplace mantel in our living room, created beautiful built-ins in our dining room and kitchen and created all of our custom kitchen cabinetry. 5 years later, we had them build a beautiful wall-to-wall cabinet and desk in our family room. These pieces add so much beauty, character and function to our home. The added bonus is that Martin offers exceptional customer service. I stopped by without an appointment and they made time to review my needs and worked with me to determine everything we would need to replace the doors. There are door sizes, door widths, door types, glass types, hinge types...and the list goes on. They educated me and walked me through step by step, never once making me feel lame because I didn't know door specifics. I was worried I would end up paying more because the other company is the "go to" door company for everyone in the area. We just ordered our doors and their price beat the other company by nearly half WOW! I'm not sure about the negative reviews or who they worked with. Since JM is a local retailer I decided to pop-in to see if they would be able to help me with a custom entry door for my client. Upon arriving I was greeted by Matt K who walked me around the showroom and told me about the various products he carried. I showed him the inspiration photo I had in mind for my client's door and he told me that one of his vendors could in fact create a fully custom door that would meet all my needs. I can't say enough great things about Matt, he is extremely knowledgeable, creative, and patient. We own a home built in 1924, so you can imagine the multiple upgrades that needed to be completed over the years. One of the most recent project was a new front door. When one of the owners, Cheryl Hochstatter, came to quote the job, her great eye noticed that there were many other small issues that they could correct, such as the size of the door molding (and that is was crooked!), the incorrectly installed window molding, and the high front porch ceiling that had several mismatched rafters (yikes, we never noticed these things!) We hired Johnston Millwork to replace the door and do the rest of the repairs, and could not be happier! All work was done in a timely manner, with the most professional and thoughtful workers, all for a very competitive price. Now that the work is done, we can truly see the difference between before and after, as do our many visitors! We are in the process of adding a master bath and sitting room to our home, and have already contacted Johnson Millwork for their opinion on windows, doors and moldings; I trust them, and we made changes to our original plan based on their advise. I needed a replacement sill piece for a double hung patio door that had been installed years earlier by another company. I could not find the replacement piece locally and the company that originally installed the door indicated I needed to have it ordered by a local company as they could not supply it "direct to consumer". I was referred to several builders in my area, but Johnston Millwork, Inc took the time to help me despite this was a very small job that they were "actually losing money on". When the order arrived it was slightly different than the original piece. Ray Smith (Product Manager) contacted the distributor and it was determined that the design had changed. Despite this, the piece fits, and is installed. Customer Service was GREAT, Ray was very helpful and very respectful, despite that this was not a major job. If the company can help with small things like this, and provide excellent customer service, then I have faith that the bigger jobs are done right. read more

I have been a customer of Johnston Millworks for more than 12 years. I replaced all the doors and windows in my House in San Carlos in the 90's. Mike the owner did such a great job, that in 2005, I contracted him to rebuild a house I inherited in poor condition. I have never had a contracted so in tune with my taste, he listened and gave me 110%. I love the special attention he gave to all the new windows, doors, and crown molding!!!! Love, Love, Love, my new home. In 2009 I ordered a phantom screen door installed by Mike, he did it in a timely manner, and as always, just what I wanted. Thanks Mike for all your great work. I am so disappointed with this company. I used another company for doors last year but they lost their installers and aren't doing doors any more. So, I did a Google search of the installer and found that he now works at Johnston Millwork. I contacted him and he came out to give me an estimate. I am remodeling an apartment and so "time is of the essence" which I expressed to him. I ordered on Feb.19, 2016 with the promise of installation on March 21, 2016. I called today to check on the installation date and was told "the date of March 21st was only a "requested by" date and that installation couldn't be done for another 2-3 weeks. What??? Why in the hell would you put March 21st on the order if you aren't intending on installing for another 2-3 weeks??? All of this on top of the fact that they got a 60% deposit at the time I ordered. I will never, ever use them again. There is no responsible person when you call the store number. The Owner is "away." read more
