We found Robert via a recommendation from a neighbor who uses him regularly. The prior owners of our house had used old exterior and buffet/credenza doors as closet doors, which meant they custom made the door frames to match, so it was not an easy "put in a new standard pre-hung door" type job that a general handyman could do. We ended up getting pre-hung doors, and Robert was able to creatively adjust the door frames to make them work and then extra molding to make it look like they were designed to fit. They ended up looking great. We also ended up having him install baseboard in several rooms, which he also did a great job on. He is neat, meticulous, and methodical, everything you want in your door installer. I started out having him do three doors at my house, and after I saw how great his work was, I wanted him to do the rest of the house. We were able to do this because his installation cost is reasonable, and he was able to refer me to a shop that sells high quality doors at reasonable prices. As some others have mentioned, in some cases he is able to reuse the existing door frame, which cuts down on the total cost SIGNIFICANTLY. I cannot believe how cheap slab doors are as compared to prehung doors, hence, "how about we just do the rest of the house?". If you're like me and don't know where to start, here's how the process will go. You call Robert, have him come out for a bid and measurement. You take those measurements to the door salesman he recommends and order your door (have some idea of what style you want). Robert's measurements are perfect, but if the door sales guy has any questions, he talks to Robert all the time and will work with him to make sure the order is right. Doors come in, Robert installs, then you find a painter (or paint yourself). Family Handyman has some great painting tips for doors. I'm a total novice and painted the doors myself with good results. Another quality of life bonus is that doing solid-core doors on the bedrooms has cut down on noise tremendously. Fantastic. Robert is the antidote for contractor stress. Our front door had gotten to be a real negative for us. We had had a bad experience with our back door replacement by another company. It never really sealed well and we are very energy-conscious so that is an irritant. All the door places assume that you will replace the full frame etc as well as the door. The reason is not just that that will make them more money. It turns out that almost nobody can hang a door well in an existing frame. When I told the door companies that we were going to just change the door, they were skeptical until I told them that Robert was going to do it. They all seemed to know him and his work and they trusted that he could actually do it. He was patient with a long process. I ended up designing our new door. Even when that was made, a family emergency delayed the installation. It is now up and we are really pleased with it. It positively glides and the seal all around it is perfect. This was our second time using Robert, he hung our provided door and installed my recently restored Schlage Crown hardware. He supplied the interlock, threshold and hinges to our spec. As usual things change as projects continue, he was to come out and finish the job after the floors were done. Well the floors didn't happen on time and we had him come out and complete the job, he made provisions for the floor to be done up to his work. As usual the door closes with a pinky and a very satisfying "Click" Robert charges for his time, but the end product and materials supplied are top shelf. On our last project he only installed 2 of the 4 doors dur to cost constraints and I now wish I had cheaped out on something else. A satisfied customer P.S. Called Robert and he happened to be coming to my area for another job and made time to come by our house and assess multiple issues with our 60-year-old front door. The California drought has caused some shifting and settling of our mid-century home and our door was sticking terribly; the interlocking weatherstripping wasn't working either. It took a TV cop-show-shoulder-shove to open. Replacement had been recommended by one contractor but we're completely wedded to our old, unique, perfect front door. In about an hour and a half, Robert removed the door, shaved areas causing the binding, and replaced portions of weatherstripping causing problems. In order to do the latter, he had to lengthen the door, adding small pieces of wood that can't be seen. They in no way detract from its appearance. We had contacted 2 other contractors to replace our front door before Robert. One declined to do the job and we respected his decision. Another contractor gave us a quote which we thought was a good deal until we found we could purchase the door for almost half his cost. The 2 other contractors talked about the difficulty of replacing our front door due to structural and cosmetic issues. He replaced the copper weather striping on our 75 year old vintage entrance door and adjusted it so it hung square again. I hired Robert to replace a full Louver door in our pool house and to repair two other doors at our home. When I called he answered promptly. We discussed the job and made an appointment for the following Tuesday at 2:00pm. I got a late break from my office and pulled up to my home at exactly 2:00 pm to find Robert backing his truck into my driveway. Off to a good start, he arrived exactly on time. We walked the job and he quoted me on the spot. We agreed to do the work the following week. One note is that Robert does not supply the new doors, but gave me two business cards of people I could talk to and get a new door in a couple of days. The first reference was excellent, extremely fairly priced (actually really competitive), and ordered my a new primed door for $200. Robert picked it up, provided the hardware, and secured a new custom oak threshold, door frame, and hardware for all three doors. Work was scheduled for the following week. Again, Robert arrived exactly on the agreed time, and did an amazing job replacing one door and repairing the other two. His work was impeccable, he cleaned everything up, and even disposed the old broken door. All work was performed for the quoted price in one day. The doors swing and latch perfectly.
