One of the best chicken spots I know in the Bronx. Its a small place where you're not going to dine in but take out. The chicken will run out so get there early to get your piece. Johnson's BBQ is a second generation Soul Food Take-out eatery. The food is very tasty and you get more than your money's worth (everyone would agree). Dwayne Johnson (the son of the original owner) can be very personable, engaging and generous with the food portions, however, MANY times, he does NOT make potato salad, which is very delicious. I've gone there more than a few times and either Johnson has run out of the potato salad, or he didn't make it THAT day. I was recently there and was told he ONLY makes it on Friday, and that you have to get there early because it gets sold out. Why only make a particular dish one-day out-of-the-week, and yet have it as a menu item, especially if it's a popular side dish in demand? That's like McDonald's not making French Fries, but one day of the week, or Shake Shack not having milkshakes! I don't think Mr. Johnson is too concerned that he only offers his potato salad when he FEELS like preparing it. I don't eat collard greens and rather than eating peas and rice, or yams; I prefer mac and cheese, and I won't go there UNLESS he's made potato salad!!! Well , well, well what can I say !!! It's OK ... I got the rib dinner and the chicken dinner, it was my first time since I move a month ago in the neighborhood. Everyone says that the food is good... It was OK, I don't know if I go back again, quality is better than quantity !!! I like my ribs soft and I love the red BBQ sauce, but not to crazy about the spice mustard sauce, the chicken, I had to put some hot sauce and lemon and then it was OK !!! My Dad's family grew up in the projects up the street. I was always excited when my parents drove me to Grandma's house from Long Island because I knew when we came home we'd be bringing Johnson's back with us. Now that I live in Illinois I don't get to go often at all but every time I'm back home I make a special trip up to the Bronx to get a chicken sandwich with some mustard sauce. I have been eating Johnson's since I was about 5yrs old & I am now 69. The abundance of food they give is amazing and can feed a couple of people who are not extra greedy. I moved from the Bronx many years ago but still travel there to get a plate of that food from time to time. Was just there today & as always I wasn't disappointed. Overall, I had a poor experience at Johnson's. The service was fair, and the owner was polite. The fried chicken was overly greasy, and the bbq sauce lacked flavor. The greens were bland, and the macaroni and cheese was poorly prepared. I would not return to this location, as the food was poorly prepared and overpriced. read more

After eating the food from this place over twenty years,The food is still great. I travel from Virginia to get a large amount of Ribs and yellow sauce. I had the ribs and two sides which was mac and cheese and collard greens. The mac and cheese needed more cheese and it wasn't baked the ribs didn't taste fresh and it wasn't soft. He gives you a huge potion but I believe quality over quantity. The collard greens needed more flavor to it hope he reads this and make changes I was very disappointed in the food. read more

I'm 65 yr old Asian who knew the father Mr. Johnson, his chicken and ribs were the best"soul" food I ever ate. I worked in the city 4yrs ago and took my co worker to try the son's food.it was still the best.. all these silly food shows that claimed they ate great soul food never tried Mr. Johnson's food are missing the best chicken and ribs. To address the one star review, here's the deal. He has only chicken and ribs. Sometimes he runs out of one of them, particularly towards the evenings. The sides are yams, collard greens, mac and cheese, black eyed peas, rice and potato salad. I think he has macaroni salad but not 100% sure. He only has potato salad on the weekend and that runs out pretty quick. In other words, you might not get exactly what you want so be prepared. I used to live at 1234 Prospect Ave in the basement of the funeral parlor! And we went to this restaurant many,many times.I loved the mustard sauce that goes on the chicken! Went in today for lunch today. I met the owner who is a really nice man. I could tell that he loves what he does. Black eye peas and collards...delicious. The mac and cheese tasted like boxed mac and cheese. I wish he baked it in the oven with a crust on top. What I really came in for were his ribs. He told me that he cooks his ribs on a rotissierie which he explained real bbq should be cooked on. The ribs were underwheming only because the quality of meat he used was not superior. The slab I had was rather stringy, dry and fatty. I am very particular about my ribs and didn't find these to be the best. The bbq rib sauce on the other hand was very good. He put two sauces a mustard sauce and a bbq sauce both were delicious. Like I said the hospitality of the owner is the best. Meal portion size is very good, as well as the price. I would definitely tell folks to try this place, everyone has a different opinion. I wish I had tried the chicken instead. read more

This place has been there longer than most of us have been alive. They do take out food only and the do not accept plastic. The menu does include the soul food basics to make the list as far as Soul Food is concerned, the portion price ratio is excellent. Just seemed a bit "Gloppy". Sides were probably warm too long before serving. Based on some of the glowing reviews that I read on here about this place, I decided to try my luck with Johnson's BBQ. This site says the place is open until 9:30, however I went there on a Wednesday at 8:30 and they were already done serving people. I went back the next day at 1:30 and I was good to go. I picked up two rib dinners and headed home to eat. Now for the actual food. The ribs were good not great. Tender but not flavorful. I didn't taste a whole lot of seasoning which meant I felt like I was eating big pieces of meat and nothing more. The mac and cheese was average and the candied yams were pretty ok. This place would not make my top 10 rib places in NY. I actually liked the fish and chips place across the street more than this place. But that's another story for another time...
