I was in the market for solar panels on my house and did extensive research before calling this company. I told the man I spoke with exactly what I wanted and he tried to steer me to a different product. I tried to explain to him that I had already done my research and knew exactly what I wanted, but he cut me off mid sentence several times. I let him know his rudeness lost him a potential customer. Edit: I am appalled that a retired veteran is trying to twist the facts. I read his email and did not want to buy Qcell solar panels that he kept pushing like a used car salesman. I asked for a quote for Panasonic panels which are far superior to what he was pushing me to buy. Panasonic solar panels are superior to QCells for the following reasons.1. They are more efficient which is important when you have limited space on your south facing roof. 2. Try degrade less quickly that QCells, which means they will produce more power for more years. This is when he cut me off and said that Panasonic no longer builds their own panels, but is "white labeling" solar panels built by another company. He got mad when I told him that many companies do that. Kenmore appliances are built by Maytag, Kirkland tires were made by Michelin, Goldstar (now LG) used to make TVs for Sony. Just because QCells is the solar panel that most people buy does not make them superior to Panasonic. More people buy Chevrolet than Cadillac. Does that make a Chevy better than Cadillac? If he didn't want to install what I wanted he could have simply said "we can't do that". Instead of being rude and cutting off a potential customer. Now he resorts to calling me a "quote collector". He also states in his response that homeowners do not have the right to say which solar panel goes on their roof. Clinton and his team at Johnson Solar installed a 14-panel, 6.6 KW system on my rental property in Pacific Beach. I requested a quote from a handful of solar companies, and Johnson Solar was by far the easiest and most pleasant company to work with - no hard selling, no pushing options that I was not interested in, very straight shooting and informative. Mind you, I requested a quote in February of 2023, close enough to the NEM 2.0 expiration deadline and solar companies were getting swamped. Despite the deluge of contracts Johnson Solar must have been dealing with at the time, Clinton was very responsive and patient with my questions and helped me design just the right system for my house. Being close to the NEM 2.0 cutoff deadline at the time I signed the contract, I was a little worried that I wasn't going to make the cut, but Clinton handled all the necessary paperwork and permitting in a timely manner. Clinton is extremely professional, polite and informative, and was outstanding with communication throughout the process. I was very pleased with the installation timeline, given the NEM 2.0 avalanche that was hitting city permitting and solar contracting at the time. The communication on permitting and installation timelines was outstanding throughout the entire process. The installation was completed quicky and efficiently in about 6 hours. The installation crew was friendly, polite and professional. The panels look great and the installation and electrical work look clean. Overall, the installation was very smooth. The Enphase Enlighten app provided with the install is feature rich and fun to use. It tracks energy production for the system as a whole, and for each individual panel, on a minute-by-minute basis, and provides a historical record of daily, weekly, monthly and annual energy production. The system is performing just as expected, with the energy output matching or exceeding the estimated output. Three of the fourteen panels were installed on the north facing roof slope, and angled a bit towards the south. Those three north-mounted panels are producing about 10% less energy than the south facing panels, which is far better than I expected. I highly recommend Johnson Solar. Now that NEM 2.0 has expired, battery storage is a must. I didn't opt for a battery system because I was able to make the NEM 2.0 deadline, but if I do another install under NEM 3.0 I will certainly use Johnson Solar and opt for one of their battery storage options. read more

I have solar on my own home for about 4 years now and wish I knew about Clinton & Johnson Solar then. Recently, I helped my parents purchase a solar system for their home in San Diego County. The entire process with Johnson Solar, from contract signing to being able to switch on their solar system took only 10 days. YES, TEN DAYS. They installed it after 4 days, so the SDGE inspection approvals took the longest. :) Clinton helped with the City Approvals and scheduling SDGE inspection. With the plans he sent to us we were able to receive HOA approval within the week as well. Your mileage may vary as every situation is different. Financing and other factors may come into play with adding time to the process as in our situation, we just wanted to get the payment done with out of pocket so we could get the system on the house before the hot summer months. Clinton was a stand-up person from the start and was never pushy and did not "oversell". You'll be reminded to "do your due diligence" as anyone should in this process. Figure out what you want, shop around and get quotes from other companies, and then you can compare them to what Clinton can offer. Clinton installed my system in October 2019 and the system is running smoothly as of April 2020. Clinton works like mad to bang out these jobs as quickly as possible. You will very likely talk to him on a Friday and be up and running by the following Friday. He's one of the only providers who lists a flat rate up front on his website. No coupons or special discounts or "referral bonuses". I spent months shopping around and talking to 7 or 8 different providers, from other locals to midsize (Semper Solaris, Sullivan, Baker) to the big guys (Costco, Tesla). Johnson Solar or Tesla have the most competitive prices. The key metric to use for an apples to apples comparison is price per watt (DC). Take your quote and divide by the proposed system size e.g. $11,000 / 4095 W (DC) = $2.68 per Watt. So why didn't I go with the big guys? Three reasons. First, I realized a huge part of the price difference is because the big guys spend A LOT on marketing. You will talk to 3 or 4 different people before an actual contractor comes to your house. You will pay for that. Often by 20% or more for an equivalent system. The second reason is the horror stories I've heard about the big guys dragging their feet for MONTHS when there's a problem and you need to invoke your warranty. When I had an issue with my inverter Clinton had a new one installed within 5 DAYS! The big guys simply cannot provide that kind of personalized service because they have no real relationship with you. They usually just subcontact out all the work to a local guy anyway. Why not cut out the middle man? What good is a warranty if they won't honor it promptly? The third reason is he works with a local credit union for financing. It's just like getting a car loan. The terms are very competitive and again you're not paying to run some big company's financing arm. I very highly recommend going with Johnson Solar. Very much appreciate that Clint's business methods seem to keep him one step ahead of any supply chain wrinkles so he can keep his jobs running on schedule. The products he has selected to use on his projects are excellent and after reviewing the spec sheets, I saw no issues with installing them on our home. After the contract was in place, his office was prompt to get our application to the power company. Clint was also available by phone for the additional issue of a meter replacement and a follow-up issue with the setup of the Enphase Enlighten monitoring interface. His crew was efficient and yet friendly. Answering any questions while they stayed on task to set up new CBs, get the panels on the roof, the conduit in place, wiring pulled and monitoring system in place. The only "snags" in our project were related to power company meter swap and the inspection by the city. Turns out power company scheduling system dropped our scheduled request so it showed pending but never landed on the dispatch desk. Clint came through with guidance to see if sdge's solar dept could expedite and they did. As for the city inspector, it seems what works best is to take the plans/pictures/etc (provided by Johnson Solar), put them in a zip lock bag and tape them to your main panel so everything is in one place for the inspector to review.
