Outstanding Experience - I Wouldn't Consider Anyone Else I spent months researching solar companies and collecting proposals before making a decision. I received quotes from multiple installers, including Sunrun and several well-known local companies. Unique Solar wasn't just the best proposal technically--it was also the best value by a wide margin. Their proposal came in roughly $25,000 less than the next closest competitor and approximately $75,000 less than Sunrun for a comparable system with 14.67KW and 2 Powerwall 3's. What impressed me even more than the price was Ulf's approach. He never tried to sell me equipment I didn't need. In fact, there were several occasions where he talked me out of spending additional money because it wouldn't provide a meaningful benefit for my situation. That level of honesty is incredibly rare in any industry. Unlike several other companies, there was no pressure to sign a lease or PPA. The discussion focused on designing the best technical solution for my home--not on selling a financing product. The installation itself was exactly what you hope for: Completed on schedule. Completed for the agreed price. No surprises. Excellent workmanship. The system worked correctly from the moment it was commissioned. Throughout the project, every technical question I had was answered honestly and professionally. It was obvious that the recommendations were based on engineering and experience rather than maximizing the invoice. Ulf approaches his work the way a true craftsman approaches a trade: carefully, methodically, and with obvious pride in doing the job correctly. That attention to detail is reflected throughout the installation. After living with the system and watching it perform every day, I am even happier with the decision than I was when I signed the contract. If I were starting over today, I wouldn't waste time collecting competing proposals. I'd call Unique Solar first. read more

We can not recommend Ulf and Unique Solar enough. Ulf is extremely knowledgeable in solar and roofing. The roofing part is very important. You don't want the panel installation to damage your roof. Our system has been up for over 10 years and works perfectly. Our system paid for itself faster that expected and the money savings on energy is awesome! We are a high energy tier household and our yearly bill for electricity is mouse nuts. Going with Unique Solar is one of the best financial decisions we have ever made for our home. read more

I recommend Matt and this company if you're looking to complete your solar project by end of year to take advantage of the 30% tax incentive. Matt spent 40 minutes on the phone with me walking over the logistics of getting the SD Community Power battery rebate as well as his opinion on our ability to be accepted into the program and providing quotes for different configurations and revising them on the fly as we shared info. His pricing was the best I've received from any company so far, and I've contacted 5 to 7. Matt said he would be the project manager through the entire roofing and solar install process. It was very collaborative, and it felt like he would be a great partner in ensuring we get the SDCP rebate as well as meet EOY timing. That was my biggest stressor. Unique Solar has a roofing company they work closely and are well-integrated with. They also have a production guarantee for solar power generation, even if you're buying outright. I hadn't heard that from any other company I contacted. read more

Unique Solar installed my solar panel array 11 years ago, and it has been providing uninterrupted energy for over 11 years at near its original output. I am grateful to Ulf Waldmann for his selection of solar panels, inverters, etc.. His technical expertise, professionalism, and price reasonableness is appreciated and my savings over the years has been substantial. If you are thinking about going solar.....do it! I would highly recommend you consider Unique Solar (https://uniquesolar.net/). read more

Excellent service for a new solar + battery install. Quote was competitive and accurate. Unique was very accommodating in designing and installing alongside our our current leased system, which nearly every other solar company found confusing or difficult to work around. Matt coordinated with our preferred roofer which greatly helped the experience. Matt and Ulf both were skilled at anticipating and wading through SDGE regulations. Unique's electrical contractor, Josh, was flexible, knowledgeable, and the install went smoothly at all 3-4 stages with only minor hiccups. (old panel, loose wire, minor stuff). Overall I'd recommend Unique to anyone for new installation, and upgrades or changes to an existing system, which we plan on in 5 years or so. Great people contributing to a great local company. read more

In July 2020, we selected Unique Solar for a 20-panel, micro inverter install. They were competitively priced and always on time. We also appreciated their consideration for safety by wearing masks and PPE in our home during the first summer of the pandemic! Their install was clean and barely visible from the outside. All the supporting equipment was installed inside the garage, with the external conduit hidden behind a gutter, and expertly painted to match the exterior of the house. In April 2022, we noticed a small water stain inside the house, on our upstairs ceiling. We asked Unique to come out to determine if the leak was a caused by the solar install. A few days later, Unique was at our home & they spent an hour fixing a leak that ended up being completely unrelated to the solar install. It's amazing (and refreshing) when a company goes above and beyond for their customers. We love our solar panels, the money we save by having them, reducing our carbon footprint & the added value to our home. We highly recommend Unique Solar. read more

I'm happy with new solar panels from Unique Solar. Quality equipment, good communication, seamless cooperation between roofing installer and solar installation. Although I did not get additional bids I felt the cost for equipment and install was reasonable. The entire process was smooth and hassle free. read more

Unique Solar installed our 28-panel solar panel system several years ago. I am a retired engineer and spoke with three different companies to get bids. Ulf was the most knowledgeable of the three companies by far, and answered all of my questions before we pulled the trigger. The installation process went very smoothly, and included some roof repair that his team did from removing a prior solar pool heating installation. I'm very happy with the results, having saved thousands on our electric bills over the yeas. We've only had a couple of issues in the years since, and both times Unique Solar noticed it before I did, and effected replacements as quickly as possible. I highly recommend Unique Solar. read more

I interviewed several companies before choosing Unique Solar to install my solar for my North Pacific Beach Home. Some of the companies were rather high pressure and heavy-handed but I simply didn't get that feeling from Ulf who was very straight-forward and explained the process and everything that would be required including the time-frame very clearly. No ick-factor with this company. His team were very efficient, considerate and left the grounds in immaculate condition. Ulf arranged for an awesome electrician who works closely with his company to completely upgrade my electrical panel at a fraction of a cost that predatory electrical contractors had quoted me previously. Ulf was a roofing contractor in a former life. His team repaired some leaks in my roof and re-coated the surface of my roof. His team even cleaned the rain gutters! Unique Solar worked seamlessly to obtain all needed permits from the city and with SDG&E to get my solar online quickly. What an absolutely outstanding experience! I can't say enough about Unique Solar and their entire team. Way to go!!! read more

Ulf gave us good advice, an excellent price, and prompt and skillful installation. The California Public Utilities Commission has recently implemented a new price structure ("NEM-3") which made it necessary for us to install batteries to store excess power during the day for use at night. The full installation was thus substantially more complicated than it would otherwise have been, but the work was done professionally and looks great. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Unique Solar to anyone looking for residential solar power. read more

My old converter was broken. I contacted several solar service companies, but they all said they could not replace or fix it until I found Unique Solar. Matt helped me order an upgraded version of the converter at a great price. Then we upgraded my solar system by adding five more panels, and they did it in a day. Ulf also explains technical details very well when I got confused. Overall excellent experience. read more

I have used these guys 3 different times as my property expanded. Ulf is amazing. I called them a month ago as i had a roof leak near where they installed the newest panels. It turns out it wasnt even their panels that caused the leak but a different problem. They were so nice that they fixed the leak as a service for me. I am now getting over $150 credit per month on my billing and i have 3 electric cars. I would recommend this company 110% read more

3 weeks of waiting on a tech to come out and check on the panel is ridiculous. Have been emailing, and calling and got no response from their team which is very unprofessional. Can't imagine how many other households are having this issue. Contacted John, which he answered right away, and then apparently ghosted me after the I gave the green light. Seems like they are just passing the buck to whoever on their side without getting any assistance or resolve. Would recommend another company when it comes to repairs. read more

Ulf and his team at Unique Solar were recommended by our roofer to do our R&R. We inherited this solar setup so we also priced the R&R from the original installer. Ulf's prices were much better on the R&R and the two additional panels we added and Ulf took the time to discuss other options for possibly expanding our system and was very honest and straight forward. Other companies tend to be pushy salesman. Ulf and his team did a great job with our R&R. One of the most important things for a good R&R is working with the roofing company (see my review for Roofing Specialists of San Diego). Unique Solar even helped us try to establish monitoring with our new inverter (warranty replacement by Solar Edge), but the original installer (and monitoring admin) NRG are being total jerks about it releasing it. NRG wanted 500$ just to add our email and phone number to their computer so we could monitor our generation. Avoid NRG like the plague. I'm almost tempted to buy a new inverter just to wash my hands of NRG. One small criticism I have with Ulf was that two-way communication was a little slow moving up to our R&R where I was also dealing with a lot of different contractors for various jobs and was trying to run a tight ship to organize things to my hectic schedule. Communication got much better during the week of the job date though. That aside, I would use Unique solar again for an R&R or to change/expand my current solar setup. read more

When we decided to get solar, we reached out to multiple vendors and were really impressed with Unique Solar! Ulf was very knowledgeable, fair and provided answers to all of our questions. His team worked with our roofer to coordinated their efforts. The team kept us in the loop and the installation was very timely. Would definitely recommend Unique Solar!! read more

I originally got a quote from another solar company and was told I would have to pay to get my whole, newly landscaped, back yard torn up and re-done So they could run lines. Also they suggested I pay a roofer to get all my roof vents moved. Of course I did not do this and instead got a quote from unique solar. They were great! All the solar was set up without having to pay a roofer to move anything. They fit more solar panels than the company that wanted us to pay to move all our vents was going to fit on the roof. Unique Solar came up with a modern solution for running the wires underground with no need to dig up my newly landscaped yard. They were professional, had realistic timelines and met all the deadlines they put forth to us. My emails were always answered in a timely fashion and any questions I had were promptly answered. Without any hesitation, I would work with them again. Amazing team! read more

Awesome company to do business with! I recently put in a pool and my power bill was going up a lot. I was referred to Unique Solar from a good friend that had just used them for his house. I met with Jeff and Ulf on multiple occasions. These guys are very knowledgeable and give you straight answers on everything. Jeff comes to you house and the first thing you feel is his honesty an integrity. Ulf has a roofing background and knows solar inside and out. This was a no pressure relaxed purchase for me. We've all had solar guys hunt you down at Home Depot or knocking at your door seaming like used car salesmen. Not these guys. Simply a great experience. FYI, we put in about 24 Samsung 305 panels. This system is kicking butt. It's producing much more than anticipated! I am happy to refer Unique Solar to anyone in looking to go solar. read more

Let me start by saying that I was skeptical about solar, solar companies, the "tax credits", etc. That all changed after my neighbor had Unique Solar install a system on his house. My neighbor and I spoke at length about his system, his annual electricity usage, my usage, the benefits, the tax credits, how he found Unique Solar and how/why he ended up going with them. After deciding to move forward with solar, I got two quotes from other highly respected companies in San Diego and Unique Solar as the third. The two other solar companies both came in right around the same price for the same systems, but with the price from Unique Solar and the recommendation from my neighbor, the decision was easy. By the time I finally contacted Ulf at Unique Solar to inform him that we were going with them, I had already received so much information from my neighbor (he's a retired electrical engineer), that I got the feeling Ulf was surprised at my lack of questions or involvement in the process. We signed the contract, put down our deposit and off we went. Let me stress this........Ulf and Unique Solar takes care of EVERYTHING. I literally signed the contract, put down my deposit( that was the last time I saw Ulf in person) and magically plans were drafted, submitted to the City for approval, approval obtained, crews showed up at my house, work performed, then less than a couple weeks after the plans were submitted to the city, our solar system was installed and ready for SDGE to flip the switch. There were a couple issues with my garage and meter location that required some extra work to be performed at the last minute, but Unique Solar did it all at no extra cost and went above and beyond the contract to make sure they did it and did it right. Now ten days into my system up and running, it is cranking out above the amount that was projected for our system and I sit back and watch my meter spin backwards and bank KwH's from SDGE, it's a great feeling. Long story short, Ulf and Unique Solar did a great job, they did it at a great price, they made everything easy to understand and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. read more

I had a great experience with Unique Solar. We did a major house remodel this summer and took our time, but Ulf and Jeff were patient with me and walked me through every step, including the tax credit portion, which is a big reason why I made the decision to include solar during the remodeling process. Once I said, "Let's do this," Ulf jumped on the permitting process, and my solar system was installed pronto. Also, I got bids from four other solar companies and Unique, by far, was the best deal. That was very important to me as well since the house remodel was costly. read more

A 5-STAR JOB!!! Unique Solar is truly what its name implies: a unique company that will bring you the best service in the solar business. We contacted several solar firms throughout San Diego, but eventually, Ulf & Co. won out. And, we are SO thrilled with the work that he and his team did for us! From start to finish, through lengthy contracts & permits, Ulf worked with us (and within our budget) and kept us informed about every stage of the process. His team was friendly and professional, and answered all our questions. They changed our electrical box and installed our solar panels at the height of the summer heat, when temps reached a ridiculous 100 degrees! Still, they made sure every panel was installed correctly and gave attention to every detail. Ulf took care of all the necessary plans, submitting them for city approval & handling everything else that comes with the change-over. (It's a monumental task, but he made it look easy!) In addition, his crew showed up on time each day, and worked around our menagerie of pets in the backyard (including 2 Shelties and a large tortoise!) We would HIGHLY recommend Ulf and his team to anyone thinking of installing solar in their home or business. It will save you thousands of dollars in energy bills over the years & provide those all-important tax credits. Plus, you'll no longer have to think twice about turning on the air or heat, because of the high cost of keeping your home comfortable. What a JOY it is to see the graphs showing the usage and savings, once your solar system is installed. It's something to celebrate each & every day. As I said, this was definitely a 5-Star experience!! read more

Very satisfied customer of Unique Solar. Writing to give an excellent two thumbs up recommendation of this solar company. Starting with the Solar Design Specialist, Jeff Hornick to the owner and all the installers and electricians. We have to say that Jeff is not only an outstanding sales person but also a very caring, thorough, patient and knowledgeable Unique Solar Representative who did not use sales pressure to explain what would be entailed with a solar system, how it functioned with SDGE Grid and Net Surplus Compensation to the details of the installation. We really appreciate how he did not pressure us to go solar, waiting for us to decide (oh over 2 months) and addressing all our concerns. He has awesome customer service skills, active listening and thorough follow up to address our needs and concerns. I have to say that I am a little bit sensitive to the noise levels when work is being done on the roof....he made sure he called his installers to consider my request and needs. Overall we are very very satisfied with this company and will definitely use them again...and have already recommended them to two neighbors. Not to mention they have very competitive pricing and they use quality products as well. They met all their deadlines and worked very hard with such a time crunch to work with our new roof project. Thank you Jeff and Unique Solar, shinta and danielle anderson read more

We researched several other companies and were undecided until Unique was recommended to us by a knowledgeable family member. Their staff, including ALL of their crew members on the job site, are exemplary in their work ethics and integrity. John Andre was our contact with them and he very patiently walked us through the whole process & stayed on top of the work schedules and their electrician, Andre, was fantastic in explaining all he was going to do along with educating us of what to watch for & reiterating how the system was going work....And now we have solar too, along with all of the rest of our neighbors...YEA! By the way, they are an all inclusive company with all of their own in house contractors...electricians, installers, roofers, etc. I would highly recommend Unique Solar to anyone for their solar needs. read more

In short, Unique Solar will provide the best possible system at the lowest price by a contractor who is competent, flexible and easy to work with. I am 100% satisfied with my system and the entire installation process. Unique solar has several facets which outshine even the vest of the competition. 1 ) Very low overhead provides a price advantage to the customer. 2) The knowledgeable owner is involved in every stage of the installation. 3) His panel-roof attachment method eliminates the need to drill through your concrete tile shingles. 4) Fastidious attention to detail provides a very neat pleasing system appearance. After receiving bids from several big solar companies, a neighbor told me about Unique Solar and how pleased they were with their service, warranty and fair pricing over the others. I decided to give the small company a try. I'm so glad I did. I got the solar panels I wanted with a great warranty at a fraction of the price of the other big companies. Jeff Hornick was/is my main contact. He was so thorough and informative in explaining solar energy, and the whole process. He was always in touch with me regarding the city's approval, installation, and any issues that arose, Jeff went a above and beyond. Outstanding customer service and professional installers/electricians. When I was researching whether to go solar I had five solar companies come to my house and give me an estimate. Most of them were not informative and focused on selling. I was very disappointed in their presentations. One of them was so insistent on making a sale that I finally asked him to leave. Unique Solar was different from the others. They knew their business and were very polite, without sales pressure. I chose Unique solar to install my system. They did the job to my complete satisfaction. I had a few roof tiles that had broken a year ago and could not find the replacements. The size was discontinued. Unique Solar found the correct size and replaced them for me at no charge. This is above and beyond what you would expect and it confirmed to me that I had made the right decision to use them for my solar project. Oh, I need to mention that they were less expensive than the others but that is not why I chose them. The first month that the system was activated I generated more energy than I used. Take that SDG&E. I understand that the rebate will go away soon so you should consider going solar sooner rather than later. Also SDG&E is going to ask for a surcharge for people who are going solar. If you do it now you will avoid the added surcharge. I am completely satisfied with Unique Solar and I recommend them to anyone looking for a professional honest solar company. I was not asked or paid to say this. read more

Here I am again extolling the merits of Ulf and his wonderful crew. I sold the house with the last system they installed and the new home didn't have a solar system. Of course I was going to Unique Solar for the new place. First, Ulf is very flexible in his design to meet the particular characteristics of your installation when some companies have a one model fits all approach. Second, little things that make a big difference are common with Unique, like using connectors that don't require drilling through your concrete tiles. Third, the installation is as neat as possible with all conduit painted. Fourth, I couldn't find anyone to beat his price for a comparable system. I didn't even try the second time. Do yourself a favor and call Ulf at Unique Solar before you decide on a contractor for your solar installation. Do tell him you want the conduit in in the attic. You will be very pleased with the whole process and the final result. read more

Unique Solar did an AWESOME job for me. I knew very little about what I wanted or needed by way of a solar system for my home. Jeff Hornick came over and took as much time as I needed to understand how many panels my house would need, how the system would interface with my old one, time lines, sequence of events needed to get the system operational, etc. He was thorough, patient and knowledgeable. I felt comfortable asking lots of questions and by the time he left, like I knew what to expect from the end product. From that point on, everything went smoothly. Unique Solar did what I had agreed to have done in a timely and efficient manner. The service has been great. Every time I've called with questions, someone has gotten back to me quickly and addressed the issue. I've been truly impressed with this company and have no problem recommending them to anyone considering a solar system for their home. I will definitely use Unique Solar again myself if I ever need another solar system!!! read more

We contracted with Unique Solar for both the solar and a new roof, electing to do each task under one contract. The entire process with Ulf of Unique and Troy of San Diego County Roofing went as predicted, efficiently, on time...what else is there? Ulf was recommended to us by a friend who had their solar project done by Unique. I had talked over the years to a variety of solar contractors, and the range was from snake-oil salesmen to probably good folks. Ulf was all business. No salesmanship. Just an accurate design from inception, clear contracting terms, clear answers to questions that included recommending once that if we chose this or that feature, he wasn't the best source for it. The installation crew was expert, polite, and careful. They were here when they said they would be, and focused on the task at hand. They had us up and running in days from when they had access to the roof after the roofers finished. I cannot think of anything I would have wanted done differently. I offer an unqualified recommendation to simply do business with Ulf at Unique. He delivers what he contracts to do, fast, no nonsense, and sends good people to your house. read more

If you are going solar, Unique Solar is a must to use. Jeff, their salesperson is extremely knowledgeable and is actually a consultant more than a pushy salesman. They really customize a solution that fits best for your needs and break down your return on investment. We used Yelp as well as other resources to research which company to install our solar system. I had "crunched the numbers" earlier and decided that I wanted to go solar. The only decision then was to decide which company to install the system. We chose Unique Solar and we are extremely happy with the professionalism and service offered by that company. We first met Jeff Hornick, the Unique Solar Representative who was extremely knowledgeable and easy to work with. Unlike other solar installation companies, during the installation process, we dealt directly with the owner, Ulf Waldmann. We were continually updated by Ulf regarding the progress of the work and the expected completion date. The installation was completed on time and the inspection was flawless. The work was done in a clean fashion and the panels look far better than I had expected. This is important to me since our roof is easily visible from the street. I waited the full year before adding my opinion here. I am thrilled with the service Ulf provides. Originally I interviewed 6 companies but my roofer suggested I give Unique a chance to bid as well and thank goodness I did! His price was lower and his service is unparalleled. He showed up when he said he would and anytime during the year that our system monitoring went down (it did twice - once due to weather and a second time due to computer glitch on our end) he sent me an email immediately so we could get the issue corrected right away.
