Visiting Philly had to come here.10 years since I've been here this place still is delicious. They have changed to a window which I think is better with outdoor seating. The staff were so kind and welcoming. While they are known for the roast pork, I always get the cheesesteak with onions and cooper sharp. Prices have gone up since I've last been here but it's around the same prices as any other spot in the city. My cheesesteak was cooked to order, got it hot and fresh, juicy meat and melty cheese on a soft roll. So happy that it's still as good as I remember. Delicious!

I'm not a fan of cheesesteaks - while that may be sacrilegious in Philadelphia, I'm from NYC and it's the way I feel. John's Roast Pork is legendary in Philly - it's been around for decades - 96 years to be exact! I'd been there once before many years ago (couldn't remember anything about it) and thought it was time for a revisit. I got the large Roast Pork sandwich - you can see from the attached picture the 'preferred toppings' (Dad's Way) are: Mustard Raw onions Hot seeded pepper American cheese I had only the Mild Provolone cheese on mine - no mustard, raw onions or seeded pepper. I would have had cooked (caramelized) onions - but they had only raw...and American cheese was not a choice for me (I was raised on it). The pork is supposed to be 'slow roasted (7 hours) pork shoulder (pork butt)' - and it may very well be, but it reminds me of the meat that's carved off the large vertical rotisseries for gyros. It doesn't look that appealing - it's like a large sub sandwich. The pork was soft, tender and seasoned well - the roll was very good - John's had been getting its bread from Carangi Bakery. However, the bakery closed due to a fire so I'm not sure where the bread is from, unless it reopened. I finally satisfied my curiosity about John's and went to see what the sandwich was like. While it probably ranks as one of the better 'pork/steak' sandwiches in Philly, I just couldn't get excited about it.

A bit further out of the city, this place boasts one of the best roast pork sandwiches in Philadelphia. Fortunately, I had a car rental so this place was not too long of a drive away, and there is plenty of parking. We got the large roast pork sandwich with sharp provolone and spinach, and honestly liked this a bit more than Tommy Dinics. This one is a bit more flavorful and juicy, though a bit pricier (almost $20) but the portions are similar if not a bit bigger. It was a satisfying meal sharing it among the 3 of us. One issue was we noted we wanted to cut the sandwich into 3 and they put that into the receipt but they only cut it into 2, making it extremely hard for us to share.

How did I end up with a Philly Cheese Steak without being in Philly? Well, I knew someone flying into town that was in Philly! Even after a 5 hour flight, my Cheese Steak was spectacular. Seasoned very well, and I dont know what Coopers Cheese is, but I got it on my Philly and it was amazing. Throw on some fried onions, and you got a slammin sando.

Yay, time for a revisit. Because cheesesteak on a Saturday afternoon is awesome. Cooper sharp is now an option and it's a delightful addition. The seeded roll was crisp with plenty of melty cheese and a ton of meat. Sadly, had to lose a star for my beloved crinkle cut fries that were way over salted and a bit cold. Portion size was way smaller than my last visit. My favorite parking spot is to pop over to the IKEA shopping plaza and park behind the Home Depot garden center. It's rarely crowded and only a few feet away from the front door. There are 2 seating areas, one closed off and protected while the other is outdoors. Make friends with the tourists and enjoy your meal!

I came here because someone recommended it. It did not disappoint. 10/10. I got mine without cheese since I have a dairy allergy. I thought it wasn't gonna be as good but their meat is well seasoned that the cheese isn't missed at all.

Large roast pork with spinach and sharp provolone on a seeded bun.

The food was good but it wasn't anything crazy. I had a large roast pork with spinach and sharp provolone on a seeded bun as well as onion rings. Well seasoned and a good portion size for the sandwich but the bread was a little chewy. The onion rings were good onion rings not much needed to be said about it. This sandwich is unique and I don't think u can get anything like it on the same level anywhere else. But like I said this wasn't anything crazy. Some of these other reviews are acting like this sandwich is the second coming of Jesus Christ. Personally I would rather have the sandwich I made in my toaster oven 3 days ago over this but that does NOT mean this sandwich was bad at all. Also people over exaggerate the size this sandwich is not so big u can't finish it.

    Sweet Pepper Cheesesteak with onions!

Small shop on the corner. Order at a window pick up at another window. Good selection of sandwiches. I ordered the sweet peppers cheesesteak with sharp provolone and onions. It was my first Philly cheesesteak! Highly recommended place and for a great reason. The sandwich is huge!! The amount of meat is extremely generous and seasoned perfectly! They were generous with onions and sweet peppers too. When I bit into it my taste buds were ecstatic and a huge smile overcame me. Wow!! So good!!! Highly Highly recommend!!!

After ready the reviews I was prepared to wait in line for a while. But...they crank the orders so quickly! We probably only had to wait in line a few minutes before it was our turn to order. After ordering, that did seem like a while - but it was probably because I was starving and watching everyone else eat their delicious looking food. We got the large mushroom cheesesteak which was huge and the meat was so tender and plenty of it. Surprisingly it wasn't as cheesy as we thought it would be despite ordering it with American and mild provolone. The bread is somewhat firmer than a normal cheesesteak which helped to hold everything together (also it was a sesame roll). The roast pork sandwich was also huge and flavorful. Honestly though, the meat was such a show stopper that everything else almost took away from it. I can see why they sell the meat by the pound. And the onion rings. Very crisp but were room temp when they called our number (still good though). I especially liked the batter. It was more like a hush puppy batter around the soft onions. There's plenty of seating; they accept cards and cash; there's also a speaker out back so you can hear your number when they call. Prices aren't bad either, 2 large sandwiches and an order of onion rings for about $40

Quite simply, the namesake Roast Pork from John's Roast Pork, is one of the FIVE best sandwiches in America. When in Philadelphia, everyone always says you must have a Cheese steak. I say, forgo the conventional option, and make the short drive outside of the city, and have a Roast Pork Sando. Disregard what other's reviewers say about the area. Sure, it's a bit industrial and not so gentrified, but during the day, it's fine. Besides, the place usually closes before it gets dark (https://johnsroastpork.com/johns-roast-pork-hours-of-operation), so don't let that deter you. And surprisingly, there is a decent amount of street parking nearby. John's Roast Pork has been on the corner of Weccacoe and Snyder Avenue since 1930 when Domenico Bucci started the family business. Now managed by third-generation owner John Bucci Jr., the incredible longevity of this place is a testament to the care and passion which derives from a family business. This is a no-frills place. Get in the usually long lines, and do yourself a favor and somewhat familiarize yourself with the menu ahead of time; don't be that person who holds everyone else up taking 10 minutes to place your order. Yeah, this place does a decent cheese steak, but with "Roast Pork," in the name, ORDER THAT. And get the large with Spinach. Some people order cheese, but I skip it. After 5-10 minutes, your order will get yelled out from the pick-up window. There is a small seating area off the side as well as some unconvered picnic style seating. While I usually order 2-3 sandos to bring back to VA, I also make it a point to enjoy one fresh from the kitchen. And your reward for making the long drive and patiently waiting, is some of these most tender, thinly sliced, and flavorful roast pork you will ever taste. The meat is seasoned well, without being overly salty. But the spinach might be the secret power-up ingredient. Slowly simmered glaricky spinach is fall-apart tender, and complements the texture of the pork. The large sandwich easily weighs over 1 lb and is stufffed inside fresh Italian bread from Carangi Bakery. The 2-3 times a year I'm in Philly - I ALWAYS make sure to stop at John's Roast Pork. I just gotta remember to bring a cooler full of ice to keep my sandwiches fresh for the 2 hour drive back to the DMV.

Cheesesteak with fried onions and Cooper Sharp
    Josh W.

The hype was real. Legit one of the best cheesesteaks I've ever eaten. 9.9/10 cuz nothing is perfect but this was damn close. Worth the 2ish hour drive from northern NJ. My GF said, "would i drive here on a weekend just for a cheesesteak? YES." Was about $45 for two cheesesteaks with fried onions and Cooper Sharp, two sodas, and a side of fries. Easy, free street parking. Nice to be able to sit and eat there, too. Go Birds

The salt and pepper seasoning was perfection. Really juicy and every bite was satisfying.

Another banger spot - and if you're in the area - I mean why would you be in the middle of nowhere in Philly, but if you're here; definitely stop by. It was one of the most flavorful sandwiches I've ever had. Service was quick and they were patient as I asked like 5 times the amount of questions as everyone else. The sandwich came well wrapped and was hot. We opted for pork this time only because we're doing soo many cheesesteaks and I'm NGL it was a great decision. It was seasoned with salt and pepper and oh my Goodness the flavor profile just explodes in your mouth. Imagine PR pernil in a thin sliced form stacked high on a sesame seeded roll that has chew and crust topped with a sharp provolone cheese. It was great experience - next time I'll change up the cheese. Overall ambiance was very divey and parking was questionable as it was right by a train track. However, I will say that so far, this place is excellent for their pork cheesesteak.

I had to get a Philly cheesesteak while out in Philly and simply put, it was a 10/10 for me here. Their system is quick and while I was initially surprised at the $15 price tag, I was ultimately won over by the portion size and flavors. It was a massive sandwich and full of meat. I loved how flavorful it was and the cheese pull was immaculate. I can see why this is a popular spot. It's definitely worth a visit!

While I was downtown, I picked up about $92 worth of food, including 1 1/2 pounds of shrimp salad that couldn't be ordered online because, for some reason, the website would not allow it. The very next day, when we went to eat it, something was clearly wrong. The shrimp salad caused a tingling sensation on our tongues, and it was obvious it had gone bad. I called the deli to let them know not just because we couldn't eat it, but because I thought they would want to know if there was a potential issue with the batch. Instead of receiving an apology or any concern, I was met with a dismissive response of, "Oh, that's weird," and the conversation felt condescending. I explained that I couldn't bring the shrimp salad back because I'm leaving town and my mother has limited mobility. I wasn't asking for a refund on our entire order. I simply asked if they could issue a gift card or store credit for the shrimp salad so my mother could use it on a future visit. Every possible solution I suggested was met with an excuse as to why it couldn't be done. The spoiled food was disappointing, but the lack of empathy and customer service was worse. Loyal customers deserve to be treated with respect when they raise a legitimate concern. After years of supporting 4th Street Deli, this experience has unfortunately convinced us that it will be our last visit. I'm reading they have new owners, so maybe it's not the same amazing management we are used to.
