Peach oolong w/ lime Coconut Taro Matcha Latte
    Amy P.

Had some time to kill before a dinner reservation and came across this cafe. The oolong was great, very refreshing. The latte was a tad bit too room temp to my liking. But I guess that means I get more drink than ice so it's okay. Flavor was good. Interior was nice and comfy seating. Our orders were immediately taken and drinks came out fast as well. I would love to come back and try more of their menu, especially the pastries!

Great spot to hang solo or with a friend. The space itself is very cute and comfy. My breakfast sandwich was delicious (loved the addition of a fried green tomato) and my chai latte was also great. Will definitely be coming back!

My husband and I like to frequent Cake & Joe. We'll usually grab one or two of the individual cakes and a drink to go but once in a while we'll stay and get some work done. Can't go wrong with free wifi, spacious tables, and some delicious goodies. It can get quite busy on the weekends because other people have the same idea but the tables will usually free up quickly. We first started coming here because of how aesthetic their desserts are; they're like little works of art. The flavor profile of the desserts and the idea of the sale of individual cakes is reminiscent of A La Mousse but Cake & Joe feels a bit more elevated compared to the more cute aesthetic of A La Mousse. The menu on their website is pretty accurate when it comes to what they regularly offer but I find that their Instagram (@cakeandjoephilly) is the best way to stay up to date with all their seasonal/limited time desserts, new items, and promotions. Food and Drink Ordered: * worth trying - [Matcha Croissant]: A bit dry and the matcha flavor didn't really come through for me. - [Coffee Mousse*]: I don't like chocolate so I couldn't fully appreciate the dessert in its entirety but the coffee mousse part of the dessert was so light and airy and had a very pleasant coffee taste. I don't drink coffee so I liked that it wasn't bitter or too strong. - [Mango Rare Cheesecake*]: This is a bit of a denser dessert because it's a cheesecake but the mango jelly on top gives the dessert a bit of brightness and cuts the heaviness a little.  - [Passion Fruit Mousse*]: I like the airiness of the mousse and cream coupled with the bounciness of the mango passion fruit jelly. There is a lot of flavor and texture overlap between this and the mango rare cheesecake. If you're not looking to get both, I would recommend this dessert over the mango rare cheesecake. -["Who Moved My Cheese?"*]: A really unique dessert. While this isn't my go to choice of dessert, I think it's worth trying at least once. The cheese flavor surprisingly works for the dessert and is not too overpowering to the point of feeling savory. -["Rose Meets Lychee"]: One of their Valentine's Day limited time cakes. I prefer the "The Key" cake over this one but, if you like lychee, you'll probably enjoy this cake. -["The Key"*]: One of their Valentine's Day limited time cakes. The cake is mainly guava flavored and I like that it's a little tart and a little sweet. - [Lychee Calpis*]: Calpis is a Japanese light yogurty drink. I like the bits of lychee in the drink and it's my third favorite Calpis drink out of the ones I've tried. -[Mango Calpis]: I like the bits of mango in the drink but the drink is a bit too sweet for my taste. I can appreciate that the mango flavor doesn't taste artificial though. -[Passion Fruit Calpis*]: Passion fruit is naturally very sour so I think the passion fruit pulp pairs nicely with the slightly sweet Calpis. Once the ice in the drink starts to melt, I think the drink gets to a good sweet spot in terms of sweetness. It's my second favorite Calpis drink out of the ones I've tried. - [Grapefruit Calpis*]: This is my go to Calpis drink. I love grapefruit flavored things so it makes sense why this is my favorite Calpis drink out of the ones I've tried. When Cake & Joe first debuted their brunch menu, I really liked what I ordered, with the Oven Roasted Beef Sandwich and Green Summer (Honeydew Matcha Dessert) being standouts. Sadly, the original brunch menu is no longer there. I've tried their recent brunch offerings like the Cajun Shrimp Lettuce Wraps, Fried Chicken & Honey Cornmeal Waffles, Smoked Salmon Benedict, and Shrimp Salad Sandwich but they were all pretty mediocre in taste. I think their mousse cakes and beverages are more worth spending money on. Would I go back? : Of course! If they weren't a bit on the pricey side, I would go more often haha. The place is very inviting and always has good vibes as the staff is always friendly. My husband and I have also visited in different capacities: we've ordered their whole cakes for birthdays and gone there as an event space where a Wagyu Tasting Menu popup was held. I'm very happy to hear about their recent expansion to Fishtown and hope for their continued success.

I came here off the recommendation of a friend and glad I did. We ordered breakfast sandwiches and both thought the food was excellent. The staff were super friendly too. The ambiance is cozy. I like a coffee place to be inviting and not pretentious. I ordered the fries green tomato with cheese on a crossiant. It was superb. We ended with a cheesecake which was fitting. I really enjoyed having this experience. Overall if you are in Philadelphia check this place out!

Finally I got the chance to check out this coffee/dessert spot. The desserts are located by the counter and everything looked beautiful. All of them are mousse based. There's a sign advising that it be kept refrigerated and must be consumed within 2 days. Otherwise need to freeze it. I think those desserts will be consumed right away because the are very light and not too sweet. Perfect individual size. Mango: has mango purées inside, taste natural. It was gone in a couple of bite. One that caught my attention was a cheese-shaped dessert. Very cute Although they are mousse based, they hold up pretty well during my travel on foot and by bus in a warm day. Staff was friendly and pointed out to the storing instruction on the counter.

Iced Taro latte | Pesto Proscuitto

One of my fav go-to cafes to do work in! I almost always get the Iced Taro Latte (though the worker was super kind enough to make the Taro Coconut Latte for me before since that's a Fishtown only drink - which tasted so so good) I normally don't go for the cakes but the food selection is pretty good - just remember to place your orders early since the kitchen closes at 4pm! There's free wifi, bathroom available to customers, and plenty of seating but does get busy sometimes!

At here twice while staying at a local airbnb. The atmosphere is perfect. Quiet enough to work yet upbeat enough you wouldn't fall asleep. The cafe is very clean! All the furniture and fixtures give an industrial modern century vibe. Ok now let's get into the food! Both days I had a caramel latte hot. First day with no whipped cream second day with. I prefer it without the whip. We had the banana bread French toast! Absolutely amazing! The crisp on it was to die for, very dense but not dry and not too sweet. Fried green tomatoes were perfectly seasoned. You don't even need the sauce but if you are eating it you will be pleasantly surprised. It definitely taste homemade. Hash was okay, the proportion of potatoes is a bit much for me. My husband loved his shrimp omelette, I tried it and enjoyed it as well the flavors were subtle and fresh.

Man I love this place! It's always a great time! The rose latte was top notch, the staff is amazing!

Friend and I went for brunch. We loved the nice clean vibe. For brunch we got the Joe's omelette and the chicken and waffle. The Joe's omelette was good, filling and seasoned well. The chicken and waffle; the waffles were good but the chicken tasted like bagged frozen chicken. Overall, it tasted ok but not anything special. We also got some mousse cake and taro latte. Which were my favorite part of the meal. We got a passion fruit and a pistachio and both had a very prominent passion fruit taste and pistachio. It was pretty too look at and it was delicious. We also liked the taro latte. It was pretty, can taste the taro and it wasn't too sweet either. I would definitely come back for the cakes and coffee. As for the brunch; not too sure just yet. Also love that they are dog friendly!

    Tortellini Dumpling Soup

The food was very good and they have a ton of coffee and pastry options as well. Will definitely be back to try some of the other menu items.

Cute Mural on the side of the building

Cake & Joe is a cute little café located in Pennsport. I really like the vibe here. I passed it a few times while my friend and I were taking his dog for a walk, and the first thing I noticed was a cute little mural on the side of the building, so naturally, I had to take a picture in front of it. After we grabbed pictures my friend and I ordered some breakfast sandwiches to go and they were pretty good. They come on ciabatta with scrambled egg, cheese, and your choice of meat (I got turkey sausage.) The next time I head up to Philly, I'll def check out more of what Cake & Joe has to offer, their cakes and specialty drinks look yummy.

I returned to Cake & Joe to pick up a few cakes for a birthday. I selected 4 mini cakes from the girl at the counter, who was about to pack them into two separate boxes, without asking how I would like them to be packed away. She was going to squeeze 3 cakes into one box, and one into another box. I stopped her and asked if she could put the 4 cakes into a one big box. She then proposed if it would be acceptable if she could fit two cakes into two separate boxes. Without getting angry, I mentioned to her again, that this was for a birthday, and would prefer if they all fit in one box for presentation purposes. I am already spending $30+ for these 4 tiny cakes. This was hardly an unreasonable request. Finally, she said she would go downstairs to see if they have any bigger boxes. She returned with a box for 4 cakes and proceeded to pack them away. All along, there were boxes, but she was just too lazy to go get them. I am very upset and disappointed by this poor service, and do not plan on returning.

I'd recommend the cinnamon rolls! -- The Sugary offers a variety of desserts ranging from cookies, cakes, muffins, and cupcakes. There are also a variety of "birthday/celebration items," like cards and candles. The interior is small, with one table, but very clean and well-decorated. The service is quick and conducive for to-go orders and they accept credit card. As there is only one register, if there is a line, it may take a while. When I was there, I was in and out in about 5 minutes. I ordered the cheesecake, rainbow cookie, and cinnamon roll. These were all so delicious and I'll be back soon for more! The cheesecake was decadent but had depth to its flavor and the crust was thick and solid. I really enjoyed the slice and it was large enough to be shared, so I felt the price was spot on for the value. The rainbow cookie was one of the best I've ever had, with its rich chocolate flavor, and was an elevated version of ones I've had in the past. Lastly, the cinnamon roll was a bit too sweet for me, but otherwise it was what I'd call "a perfect cinnamon roll." Fluffy, cinnamon-forward, and with lots of icing! I'd highly recommend The Sugary for any sweet treat cravings, but only if you have no allergies or dietary restrictions. I opted for their tiramisu as I was drawn to the adorable packaging. And as it turns out, there's more to it than meets the eye since it also tasted pretty good. I liked that it was only subtly sweet and pretty light and creamy. I didn't taste too much coffee rum in it, despite the warning about the alcohol content. This tiny shop closes around 3pm on Sundays, so make sure you go there soon enough in the day so that you can give their delectable sweets a try.

Now I could tell you all about how perfectly tasty everything is. From the classic banana puddings (I prefer the caramel version myself,) to the cookies, to the pineapple upside-down mini cakes. Yes, I could tell you that. But I want to speak to something deeper. I want to speak to belonging and community; and to fairness. As a biracial person with a brown sister, I feel the pull to support black and brown businesses. It's not a secret. And sometimes you do it, and sometimes you privately think "Damn. I wanna be supportive but this place is a mess." Then there's Sweet Life. NOT that. FILLED with good product at a great price, delivered by owners and staff who actually give a damn about being loving and supportive to all different types of people. And did I mention the sweets are POPPIN'? And to that statement of fairness. Today I came in to place an order, and when the price came up, for a moment I thought "Damn. That is a lot higher than I remembered, but I am not about to question them. They set the price and that price is what they deserve." So I paid. But then I noticed there was more in my bag that I'd asked for, and that there had been a miscommunication. When I tell you that this miscommunication was corrected with swiftness *AND* a smile. No shade. No drama. Just an "Ooops, oh well, here's your refund on the balance." I know this seems very basic but we all know it isn't. We have all been in that awkward situation where as a customer we have to point out an error, and the vendor turns it into a Shakespearan tragedy. Not Sweet Life. "Oops. Sorry! Fixed. Love you." They have a sign saying everyone has to get a ticket number. It gets confusing when previous people didn't take or we're going out of order because some of us are still deciding or some people are picking up orders instead of buying on the spot. I think it's an Italian bakery thing to sell baked goods by the pound. I don't like how their menu is posted way far back on the wall behind the counter. If I didn't look online beforehand, I wouldn't have an idea of what to do. Well we still didn't. Since we wanted to get a cannoli and some cookies, we asked the staff whether we need to buy a whole pound/box. He said we don't if we just want a few. He didn't say and we didn't ask how exactly we'll be charged. We ended up getting four cookies: pignoli, almond macaron, old fashion italian, chocolate drop For the cannoli, the menu shows different options but I didn't get questions when I just asked for "a cannoli" which is a good thing. We ended up getting the original one with ricotta. We got charged $6 in total for all the items. Honestly we still don't know how their math works because the transaction was rung up as "cannoli $6". They have a surcharge if you pay by card. We paid in cash and it felt fine with the nice round numbers. Also it seemed quite common for people to pay cash at this spot. The cannoli was pretty good. They pipe it fresh on the spot, and you can taste the difference with a crunchy shell. I'm not sure what's authentic in terms of shell thickness and texture, but I personally would like a thinner shell. The filling wasn't too sweet even after the powdered sugar. The cookies were more fun to browse than to eat. All of them were too sweet and had extracts that I didn't like. If I picked my favorite, pignoli and almond macaron are close. Pignoli is sweeter but has nice texture with the pine nuts on the outside. Almond macaroon is strong in almond extract but less sweet and has a slight chew to it.

I walked right up and ordered - you can look through the window at the pastries - and order which ones you would like. I immediately noticed these 'large' cakes (large compared to the pastries) and asked what they were - Pound Cakes - Lemon and Lavender. I opted for the Lavender. This was a 'simple' cake - a little icing on the top, and a very subtle lavender taste. It was moist and rich, but not too dense - perfect texture. It was a very enjoyable piece of cake. I may try the Lemon Pound cake next time. Next, was the Plum Almond Tarte - it looked amazing. The exterior was browned and had a delicious caramelized crunch to it. I could immediately taste the plum topping as I crunched on a few almonds. However, once I got to the interior of the tart, it was soggy - too moist. I don't think it's supposed to be that way - but it made the tart difficult to eat. It was very tasty, but the sogginess really detracted from the texture. There's an attached picture of the middle of the tart. I thought I would get a cookie and they had 4 choices - I chose the Molasses. It has been a LONG time since I had a molasses cookie. This one had a soft homemade texture - it was sprinkled with sugar. The deep taste of molasses came through immediately and left a delightful little 'bite' like fresh ginger or cloves might do. It was a great cookie. I saw some macaroons in the front of the window - plain and chocolate chip - I got the plain. I'm used to the 'store bought' macaroons-with finally chopped coconut and a soft creamy texture. This was NOT the Manishewitz coconut macaroon I grew up with....good thing! This was a 'real' macaroon - the coconut was shredded a longer length and had true texture. The cookie has a crispy exterior and a chewy coconut interior. I also ordered a mini tarte - the Pear Pistachio Tarte. It was covered in a pistachio crumble and a pear topping, with a pistachio custard filling, which had a reasonable consistency, unlike the Plum Almond. I'm a big pistachio lover and this little tart was yummy - the combination of nutty and fruity came out really well. Last, but not least, is the Apricot Financier. This is a very different pastry - moist - with a very subtle almond taste. There's a very small slice of apricot (I wish there would have been more) which added a nice fresh fruity chew to the light cake. While the cake tasted fine, it needed 'something' more. I'll be returning to Tarte - most likely for the pound cakes and a few cookies!
