Excellent experience with John's Moving & Storage. Estimate was very thorough, and Jamel did a great job of explaining the process and pricing. The crew came out on a Monday to do all of the packing did a great job. On Wednesday another crew came to move everything, and they too were great. They stayed until 10:00pm until the job was complete. John's will be storing our things in their climate controlled warehouse at a cost that is significantly less than a storage unit. They will deliver and unpack our things (120 miles away) when our new home is built. Pricing was very fair. Actual cost was lower than the estimate as well. They make giving the estimate a breeze as well as setting up the move (and make changes if requested). Thank you to Tye and Jill for being so accommodating. These guys literally saved me! I called them with a very last minute very large move. Once I explained the circumstances with my landlord Jill scramble to get me a truck that day. Even the owners wife came out to help get us packed up quickly. It was absolutely amazing!! On top of that the move itself was one of the best we have ever experienced...definitely the best local move. All of our furniture was well taken care of and even the ikea beds(which never go back together the same) are perfectly put together. The crew was so sweet and worked so hard on a 95+ degree day. Buyer beware. Hired John's Moving and Storage to assist with a local move and a storage period of 60 days. The pricing was expensive, but competitive and they had availability during the timeframes I needed. The logistics and interacting with John's Moving started off really well, until actual move time came around. We paid extra for the full value coverage for possible damages, and took care to list all expensive items on their 'high value' item list for the paperwork. When they initiate the move process, they make a really big deal about how they are the professional movers and all owner packed boxes aren't covered, and items that they pack they are fully responsible for. We accepted, and the only items that were 'professionally' packed by Johns Moving and Storage were large/heavy (and expensive) items we could not pack ourselves (refrigerator, patio table set, ceramic grill, dining room set, etc.). Of course, we had all these on the high value list also. Well come move-in day, every item they 'professionally' packed had damage. Leather couch was ripped, dining room chairs were had arms snapped, ceramic kamado grill was cracked and chipped, every stainless steel panel on the refrigerator was dented and scratched, patio set was dented and scratched, etc. The move process was poorly managed and best practices for moving things were not enforced. Heavy items were not put on dollies or quads and were dragged across the hardwood floors causing damage to the newly refinished wood. Washing machine was hooked up to the water lines incorrectly and flooded the laundry room causing water damage. The quality of the handling of our valuable items and respect for our home was horrible. Negligent moving practices, and poor management. Of course, claims for all damage were filed, and we did receive a check to cover the damage, but ONLY for the dining room chairs and couch. Everything else was either denied or we were only given $25 or $50 'cosmetic' credits when the remaining damage is thousands of dollars to repair or replace. John's is refusing to reimburse or provide additional coverage. Such a headache...and now we need to look at pursuing other legal action to avoid getting steamrolled. My word of advice is to avoid this company for your move. If you have anything that is large and difficult to move, it will be damaged, and you will not be taken care of afterwards. Either spend more money on a reputable moving company to avoid the hassle, or spend way less money on some college kids that will gladly break your things for way less money. I try not to leave negative reviews, but this move experience with John's has been a terrible experience. read more

Underestimated by almost $1,000 for both weight and time. Poor communication and setting expectations with their customers. Kept getting apologies for how long it took, as it shouldn't have taken that long to load. They were unorganized while loading the storage pods, had to unload and reload a couple of times. Watched one mover fold moving blankets for 20 minutes on my dime during unload. Would not recommend. read more

If you're planning a move I suggest you hire another company, NOT John's Moving. There moving crew is a group of THEIVES!! We hired them because they came recommended but it was a disaster. They stole 2 boxes from us, one of which contained item that can NEVER be replaced!!! When I contacted their office about it, the lady answering the phone defended the crew. Told me I must be mistaken and the box would turn up, I just hadn't come across it yet. Implied I hadn't looked everywhere. Made it sound as if I was the one who lost the box! This company is, as we speak, holding my family's furniture hostage. They sent a 'pay this final $ to unload you' invoice followed by an 'oops, we didn't realize you would need a shuttle and now we need more $$' demand. A professional and experienced moving company doesn't 'oops' realize they need a shuttle and wouldn't make the customer pay for their error (although I suspect, of course, this isn't an error at all). Each and every time they have been courteous, professional, and have handled our belongings like they were their own. I have even worked with some of the same guys over multiple moves, which is a good sign to me that they treat their employees well. We have used them for cross-town moves, have used their long-term storage, and they helped my mom move all the way from Philadelphia. My team of 3 movers arrived right on time and had all my belongings on the truck and ready to go in under three hours. That was amazing considering I was still in the midst of packing things up. I have waited a year to post this review naively thinking that our experience couldn't get any worse. After a nightmare move in which John's tried to overcharge us by 60%, and having to resolve the issue with the owner, who is not John BTW-the business has been sold- we delivered in person pictures and our insurance claims within the nine month period. Now, after six months, John's is trying to stick us again. They are at the least incompetent and at the worst unethical, unprofessional, and soon to be sued. read more

This is a long review but if you are considering hiring John's Moving and Storage, please read it in it's entirety and then hire someone else to trust with your belongings. I hired John's Moving and Storage based on a recommendation from a neighbor who had used them a month before our move. The quote process was easy and Jamel was very responsive and I thought thorough. We went through our home room by room and discussed what we planned to move ourselves and what we wanted them to move. I explained that we had some very heavy furniture pieces and Jamel said that they would send a crew of 4 people and it would not be an issue. I also asked if their crew was experience in how to move a Tempurpedic adjustable bed and mattress and he confirmed that they were. On our move day the crew showed up at 10:15 (quoted time was 8:30 to 9:30AM.) The crew that came to our home (with the exception of Deion who was the crew leader) seemed very inexperienced and one gentleman even told my mom it was his second day on the job. Jill told me before our move that they were sending an extra person at no charge to us and I'm assuming he was there to train with the team. At ~4PM, after 6 hours and moving only a portion of the items they were supposed to move, the truck left our old home to come to the new house that is only 13 minutes (8.4 miles) away. When the truck hadn't arrived at the new house a little before 5PM, I began calling the number that called me that morning (to say they were on their way) with no response. I called the office and was told that Jill would be contacting me. She and I began communicating by text and she told me she was trying to locate the crew. Around 7PM a couple of the crew members showed up at my new house in a car and I asked them if they went to dinner. They told me yes and that the truck was lost and the driver's phone battery died (what they used for GPS) and he didn't have a charger. At 8:07PM the truck showed up and sat down the street in front of our neighbor's house and finally came down to our house about 8:15. At 11:19 that night Deion came to me and said the crew was tired and they were making mistakes and damaging items. I asked him to please contact someone to see if they could get permission to come back the next day and he thanked me, called someone and told me they would be back with a fresh crew the next morning. This request unfortunately came after we witnessed them shatter a microwave, drop my front load washing machine on the flagstone front porch because it was not strapped to an appliance mover, not wrap any furniture the way we were told it would be during our estimate meeting and we had several items damaged. The crew showed up just after 8AM the next morning and did not leave my home until 5PM that night. We had to be out of our old house by midnight that night and we had to enlist the help of several family members and neighbors to attempt to finish moving all of the items Johns Moving left behind but were supposed to move (most of our garage, screened in porch furniture, etc.) We were not able to finish in time and had to take an extra day to move out of the old house. Shortly after the crew arrived the next morning their manager showed up at our new house with a bouquet of flowers for me and apologized for how messy my move was and that the team was not able to get it done. I walked him through my home and showed him the pictures I had sent to Jill the night before of all of the items we committed to moving ourselves in the house hours before their moving truck showed up with my belongings. I sent these pictures because she said that we must have had the team move more than what we told them initially they'd be moving. That was absolutely not the case and she thanked me for sharing the pictures and said they were very helpful. After several discussions we paid $2267 for our move ($250 deposit was not credited) and were told we had 9 months to file damage claims. Today after waiting 2 months for our claim to be processed we received an email from Jessica saying that they would not process our claim unless we paid them $1400 that they had to eat in additional time spent on our move. I called Jill and after she proceeded to justify this for over 25 minutes I told her I would take it up with the Better Business Bureau and a lawyer if necessary to get it resolved. I had to cut this review short due to space limitations but I will be filing a claim with the better business bureau if you'd like the rest of the details. I've moved over a dozen times in my lifetime and this is the worst move I've ever had. read more

I've used John's Moving twice now for big moves. First from a 4,000sf home down to a townhome of ~3,000sf 2 years ago. They were extremely professional & couldn't have possibly have been nicer. Then I used them again recently to move down again to ~2,000sf townhome across town. There was a LOT of stuff & furniture to move both times & I felt they gave me very good price for the service I received. They arrived on time, the guys were all very friendly and respectful, worked well together as a team. It was a HOT day & they had to move all my furniture into a home that was still being painted (5 painters) and cleaned (1 cleaning lady). They never complained no matter what changes we had to make, they were willing to put covers on their shoes to protect the newly refinished floors, and were apologetic that it took a bit longer than hoped due to the chaos of my particular situation. I was relieved that I had chosen this moving company & it gave me peace of mind to have them in charge of the move. These guys do such a GREAT job & everyone I worked with from the estimator to the office staff was sincere, friendly & professional. I always recommend them with confidence. read more

I recommend you avoid this company at all costs. My Coldwell Banker agent in Raleigh recommended them and now says she will not recommend them again. John's sub-contracted my shipment to T. S. Van Lines out of Clermont Florida. I have no contract with T.S. Van Lines and they are not mentioned in my contract with John's. My contract with John's stated explicitly that the shipment was to be "unloaded" in Wilmette, IL, where I have bought a condo. T.S. Van Lines is trying to charge me hundreds of dollars in "shuttle" fees because they did not do their homework and find out in advance that the huge truck on which they loaded my shipment is not permitted on the street where my condo is. They must move my shipment to a smaller truck in order to park on the street and unload. None of this was included in my only contract, the one with John's. T.S. Van Lines told me I had signed a contract to pay the additional money, but when I demanded they produce any such "contract," they could not. I did sign a bill of lading on Aug. 28, when the shipment was loaded at my old house, but the next day, Aug. 29, I received a confirmation of my original contract with John's for the original amount. John's and T.S. Van Lines are holding my shipment hostage until I pay the additional money. I already have the certified check in the ONLY amount for which I am contracted to John's. John's seems to think they can arbitrarily -- and single-handedly alter contracts at will. In order to take possession of what I now consider to be stolen goods, I may be forced to give them a check under duress. This review is evidence of that duress. No respect for neighbors when moving a client. They blocked our driveway without asking and gave an attitude when we asked them to move. Then one employee continued to give dirty looks. Called the office and all they said was "Did they move the truck". What gave you the right to block my driveway in the first place. NO RESPECT. read more

A VERY disappointing move. First, after an onsite visit by one of their folks we were quoted about X for the move, which seemed fair. He estimated about 14,000 pounds. We had him look at every room to include the storage so that we got an accurate estimate. The boxes were improperly packed with items for the bathroom in a bedroom box. Many of the wardrobe boxes had items thrown in and stuffed in at the bottom. We have numerous scratches and nicks in almost every wooden item to include antiques. My wife spent weeks packing but we knew we would need some packing help and told them what rooms we would do and which ones they were to do. We instructed them to load the attic storage on the trucks last as we wanted those to first go to a storage unit. Unfortunately, we now feel that some of the other boxes of items we have not been able to find two months later got mixed up with that and will have to unpack the entire storage unit to find. One of the antique dining tables that we had refinished was damaged around the edges of the table as if it had been rolled on its edge on a concrete surface. After being told they had completed packing and loading, as we were cleaning up the house for the new owner, we found boxes left in closets and the attic. We had a delay of the previous house owners loading their trucks so we told the movers to keep the trucks over one additional night. I think the costs was like $150 for both trucks. At the end I expected the original estimate to be close with the additional night added on. The end price was double. I was shocked when my wife told me as I was out of town during the move and they demanded payment on the spot of delivery. To give you a little perspective of their packing. I have a few pictures of one of our last wardrobe boxes they packed from my attic office. SThere was no packing as items to include two computer monitors, were just thrown in. I am 66 years old and have made numerous moved across multiple states and cities during my career but I can honestly say this is by far the worst move I have EVER experienced. We had these folks help us move. I don't mean to be negative but I regret not doing some research on them first. Many items broken and missing. All the movers were thug-like and rude. These guys were simply NOT moving professionals but more like, I dunno, part time hired hands. Tons of attitude when we complained to the owner. They seemed just okay in terms of speed (not very fast; they clearly are paid by the hour).
