Randomly found this place while driving around on our honeymoon. Passed it twice and each time the parking lot was jumpin so we decided to stop in for dinner. Let me tell you, it was worth it! Walk in and its immediately obvious this is a local joint that only worries about the food and not the ambiance. Which is perfect: spend less time ensuring your tables match and more time focused on your bar-b-q. Service was friendly without being obnoxious, you order at the counter and they bring you the meal. We decided to get two 2 meat plates so we could try all four meats (math is fun!). The plates come with two sides, so we got the classics: mac n cheese, potato salad, black eyed peas and okra gumbo. Everything was fantastic. Juicy brisket, fall off the bone ribs and chicken and the sausage was amazing! The sauce is a great compliment to the meat, it doesnt cover up the flavor like some chain restaurants need to do. We got the peach cobbler for dessert and while it was tasty, we both would have preferred it warm instead of cold. Overall this place is worth the drive out and we will be back next time we are in the area. read more

Headed back to Houston from a mini getaway in Bandera and stopped in at Johnny's BBQ. I had the sliced brisket with potato salad and my husband had the ribs. Both brisket and ribs had a good flavor. The sauce was just right for me as well, not too sweet and not too savory. We ended the meal with a slice of their homemade pecan pie. It was delicious with just the right amount of sweetness. All pies are homemade and looked fabulous, just didn't have the stomach room to try them all. Service was good. What does it mean when you place your order at a Texas BBQ place, then you realize that everyone around you is eating chicken? I ordered a chopped brisket sandwich and received what my husband says is a "hash" sandwich... finely shredded beef mixed with other stuff. I am a Texan and this is not an acceptable chopped brisket sandwich. The fried okra and apple pie were nice and so was my friend's chicken strips (very juicy and nice!). Steak finger basket is to die for. Tender meat and perfectly breaded with just the right amount of crispness. I had spinach and sweet potato fries. You know it's good when you devour your veggies first. I've had the barbecue as well. Just as good and tender. Great sauce. I will definitely frequent this place. We sat inside to eat. They are consistent. Food is quick and hot as it should be. Order at the counter and deliver to your table. Get your own refills on drinks. Not a fancy setting, just home cooking plain and simple. This is one of those true "holes in the wall" that is very good They have several different BBQ plates that are very reasonably priced. They come with two sides. I had the ribs. Meat was tender and fell off the bone. Numerous side dishes. I didn't get my usual okra, but had black eyed peas and fried zucchini. I was recently in the hospital and my nurse, who is from Seguin, was talking to me about BBQ, since I live in the BBQ Capitol of Texas. She told me that if she wanted BBQ, she went to Luling. But, at the same time, she told me about Johnny's BBQ and their awesome pies and catfish. I had to check it out. I had the fried catfish, along with coleslaw and blackeyed peas.The catfish was worth the stop. I got a Coconut Cream Pie, to take home, and it was awesome.Like any place, they have some items, that are better than others, and I was given the heads up. Enjoyed my lunch here. I've avoided Johnny's for about 8-9 years because it seemed dirty and not healthy. Today I just didn't care. Where's the ZERO star rating? Was just passing through and wanted some good BBQ, this wasn't it. Chicken was clearly cooked some other time and warmed up (as most places do) and was so dry. Potato salad, no good. Pinto beans, the same. The swamp water was good tho. If you want decent bbq in Seguin, TX do yourself a favor and DO NOT stop here. Everything is tasty here - better than mama made! Love the fried pork chops and bbq ribs. Salmon patties are amazing! Veggies are well prepared with my favorite being squash and fried okra. Tea is excellent! Now, the desserts are over the top - best in town! Every pie is amazing! I look for the pie of the season. We should get frequent flyer points as we are there at least once a week. The ribs were tough and dry. Look like they had been reheated several times. The macaroni and cheese was mush same story it looked like it been reheated multiple times. The place is filthy looking. We came in tried to place our order had a hard time because there's I think four different menus. Then they serve someone that came in after us aggravating. I've been to Johnny's BBQ twice with my most recent visit yesterday during lunch time. If you don't know, this is almost hole in the wall, but I'm pretty sure the kitchen and food area is clean. The restaurant looks like it is an old house. This lends itself to the down home Southern comfort food feel. There was a line that formed during lunch hour but it moved quickly. The first time I came, I ordered the catfish and it didn't disappoint. This time I ordered the grilled ham and cheese sandwich with a side of sweet potato fries. Now this is how I know this was down home cooking!!! The sandwich came with thick slabs of oven baked ham and melted cheese topped with onions and pickle slices. I'm still craving another one of those sandwiches it was that good. Now I've heard poor reviews about the barbecue. I haven't had it. My coworkers who I've eaten with haven't had it either. Once upon a time Johnny's may have been good, but those days have past. The microwave door can be heard slamming shut every 45 seconds as they heat up your chicken or sausage. I've never had such a dry chicken quarter in all my life. Sides were predictable, but he fried zucchini was a nice surprise. Had the brisket, ribs, and sausage, all were tasty without any bbq sauce. They have other daily entree's that differ from bbq as well. Would like to try those sometime. If I could give this place a half a star I would. I ordered the 2 meat plate with brisket and sausage. And two sides mashed potatoes and green beans. The food was soaked in water to keep it warm no flavor and tasted just awful I wouldn't come back if the food was free. And to top it off there were roaches running around the restaurant. read more
