Their menu is extensive, reasonably priced, and I never leave hungry. Mondays and Tuesdays are their 2 for $35 entrees, so chicken parm and penne la vodka (with a little room for their amaretto nut truffle.). And the bread...oh that bread! Baked fresh to order! I haven't left a review on Yelp in years, but the delivery driver was so incredible that I just have to. I asked for my order to be left on my front step. When I picked up the box, I saw it was sitting on two rocks and a branch. It was dark out and very cold, and the driver must have rooted around to find something to prop up the box so it wasn't sitting directly on the cold ground. Visited John the Baker in Stamford for the first time. Its your classic, family Italian restaurant with all the fan favorites (pizza, pasta, salad, dessert). Nothing frilly in the interior/atmosphere but the food is solid. We tried all sorts of dishes and were happy! The pizza was particularly delicious and I inhaled my zeppoles immediately, so good. I think we found our new favorite spot for pizza in Stamford! John the Baker is one of those places I passed by often and wondered about, and what we found was a super family friendly, no frills spot that serves all the classic Italian dishes you could want. They haven't changed their pizza recipe in the over 60 years they've been in business, which is a testament to how great their pizza is! We were happy with everything we had, and the clam appetizer was super tasty too. Loved that you could pick out any pasta with any kind of sauce as a pairing with your entree, and we were impressed to see they had a full bar too. When I used to live in Stamford many many years ago this was my go to place to pick up or dine in for pizza. It was my last night visiting Stamford and I wanted a great meal so I stopped by my old favorite. It was about 7:45 so it wasn't terribly busy. I was greeted and seated promptly and my soda arrived with a few minutes. I decided on the chicken piccata with angel hair pasta topped with garlic and olive oil. The meal came with a salad that was a perfect size and some bread. My entree arrived in the perfect time and I eagerly dug into it. The chicken was cooked to perfection. The sauce nice and lemony just as expected. The accompanying veggies nice and fresh and loved the zucchini that was so great. Service was very attentive and my soda refilled without having to ask. Absolute W O R S T nightmare I've ever stepped foot in! If I could give 0 stars I would... Made a reservation for three, showed up ready to eat, and guess what? No utensils, no plates--like they expected us to eat with our hands or just stare at the food. The host "welcomed" us with all the charm of a grumpy cat and shoved us into a booth so tiny I felt like a sardine in a can. The whole place looks stuck in a time warp with those tacky LED strip lights screaming "I peaked in the 90s." We sat there for 20 minutes, invisible to the staff, parched AF, begging for water like it was some rare treasure--had to ask THREE times, while we watched every other table be hand fed ice-cold water constantly. Salad came with a free hair accessory, and the pizza? Straight-up Chuck E Cheese rejects. The waiter? Oh, SHE showed up twice: once to take our order, once to drop the bill, and vanished into thin air the rest of the time. Had to summon a busboy just to get water and utensils--like we were begging for scraps. THIS PLACE IS HAZARDOUS. What they have on website is not what I received. I ordered specifically thru their website what was to be three (3) quarts of soup to receive the following: one quart of chicken and rice (which ended up being mainly rice and at best a tablespoon of chicken). It tastes of water with no flavor. Where's the chicken?!? One what I expected to be quart as it is $11 and DOES NOT SAY PINT (website is VERY VERY MISLEADING as it has pint sizes above priced at around $8 you click the link and all different box s for server pop up. Specifically as an appetizer check box , as an entree check box - which is what I selected). This also taste like water. Difference from this and the rice soup is it had one (1) piece of chicken. Again where's the chicken? Last but not least, was red escarole & beans with sausage quart (I also selected "as entree" and got a pint. The sausage is burnt and the broth has soooo much salt I spit it out. I know sausage can be salty so the cook ‍ should know not to add to much additional salt to the food. I called JOHN THE BAKER to get a refund and return the soup only to be given on excuse (prices went up. That's why you got a pint not a quart. We are not giving you your money back. We don't do that. We can give you a discount). Maria and Willy should not be in restaurant management. I don't want a discount I just want my money back. Take your soup back and give me back my $50.00. I can take a bag of ramen soup and do better than what they try to pass off. This is the best restaurant in Stamford, or in all of CT. If I had to choose one place to have my final meal at this would be it. The food is DELICIOUS and the customer service is top notch quality. It is evident how much the waiters/waitresses and workers care about their customers, and you really feel connected to them. The ambiance is also great, you really get the Italian pizzeria vibe. I love John the Baker, and I highly recommend it even if you're just stopping by Stamford. Logic would said half of 2 toppings is 1 topping but we were charged for 2 individual toppings. When we arrived we were asked to pay more for the pizza than online prices, make sure you confirm price BEFORE ordering because their online prices do not match their actual prices. When we got the pizza it was poor quality the crust was floppy and the pizza was cold even though we got there in less than 15 min from ordering. Under reviews on Yelp that are "not recommended" you'll see several people who got the runaround with delivery orders. We unfortunately had similar issues therefore and can't recommend. Recap if you're interested : -1 called two days ahead for Sunday lunch time delivery of 2 pizzas -2 pizzas didn't show up on time and we had to call them for status -3 answer: "pizza oven malfunctioning and we'll get them our to you 30 mins late" -4 pizzas don't show up, called again and now they say there's some delay with driver, few mins more he'll deliver the pies -5 they call back to say that NOW the delivery driver is now on his way; so late that our party is ending. Cancel order. Communication in advance of the issue would have made this much better. And then telling us the driver was on his way but really wasn't? By definition a Cobb Salad is topped with chicken, bacon, avocado, hard boiled egg, and blue cheese crumbles. I like this salad and had it delivered twice this week. The first salad came with chicken, bacon, avocado and hard boiled egg. The second salad came with bacon and chicken!! I stopped in to tell them and Alex handled my complaint poorly. He told me that they had stopped using avocado "a while ago!!??" I mentioned that I had just had it a couple of days earlier and it had included avocado. Alex's response was that I should check the ingredients online each time I order! (In addition, entree salads use to come with a roll...no more.) He closed the conversation by saying I should ask to speak to him the next time I order, so that he can credit me for the hard boiled egg! My suggestion is that you go around the corner to Tabouli Grill if you're looking for a nice entree salad. We love this restaurant! Whether it's for dine in, delivery or pick up, we have always received great service. We typically just order pizza from them (their cheese and margherita pizzas are great), but they do have some yummy pasta dishes as well. Their restaurant isn't usually too busy when we've gone so we were always seated quickly and well attended to. The only negative to this place is that the parking is terrible. There are not a lot of spots and the ones that are available are very small.
