I saw my wonderful primary care physician Dr John Madej today after working together remotely during Covid. I live with a number of long term chronic health conditions including 2 meningioma brain tumors, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia and viruses that keep reactivating There is NO WAY I could manage all that without Dr Madej! Ok, this is the story. I heard about Dr Madej's reputation of being the nicest doctor on the Peninsula so I called in and made a reservation to come in and see him for a 7th opinion on my condition because I had been going to various doctors and getting no definitive answers to my situation that is very, very serious. So just before I was to go in to see him, I called in around 8:30 to double check and was expecting to get the voice mail or to talk to his scheduler. To my surprise, he answered the phone from his cell phone. Apparently, he picks up his own office calls when the office is closed. He was in his car driving to work and insisted on calling me back personally when he got in. WHO DOES THAT? When I finally met him, he exceeded every review here on yelp. His office is really small, his family works with him and it is really a personal operation. No assembly-line mega push you through as quickly as possible. I really understand now what people are talking about because he does things that no other doctor would think of. For example, he took an EKG of my heart and instead of just running it for 2 seconds to save paper, he let it run for 4 minutes to really get a good reading. WHAT? He also told me that the current medication I am on might be dangerous and wanted me to see a friend of his to get a more specific opinion. Dr Madej is not afraid to give you his opinion straight out. Not only that but he saw me special on a Sunday afternoon and then said he would drive up to UCSF with me personally during his vacation to talk with a doctor that he is referring me too. Yes, you read that right, he wanted to get in the car while on vacation and drive 40 miles to SF just to make sure I was asking the right questions. Now that is amazing. Now I also understand that he also offers a more personal service if you want that. Normally, I am TOTALLY against that but in Dr, Madej's case, I signed up for it. Why? Because I feel that he is doing this for a time issue, not a money issue. I have seen 11 doctors for my situation and Dr. Madej spent way over my alloted time to see me and didn't rush me or pressure me to leave. He offers what I feel is concerge service for free NOW as he practices with each patient and his office is full. It is not money with him, but it gives him the opportunity to give a closer relationship with his patients and therefore a better opportunity to find out what is wrong with them and what they need. The bottom line is Dr Madej is not content with sending you on your way with a pill or a shot to make you feel better, he wants to find out what is wrong with you so you can get the help you need and make it change. I always thought that was the goal of every doctor when i didn't need them but now that I do, I have come to find out that you are just a number on a chart, a 15 minute space in the day to 95% of the doctors out there. They listen to you, make a quick evaluation, type you in on the computer, prescibe a pill and if you die later on, they file your chart somewhere else. If you live and come back, they fumble and stumble along. I know that sounds harsh and cold but I have been dealing with a situation that has been going on for 7 years with no solution. And in every case, I have basically been give the same treatment until I found Dr. Madej. He wants to find the answer, not just mask the situation over with a pill. He really is the best doctor I have ever been to in my life. Dec 2013: By the way, if you are looking for a new doctor, Dr Madej is now only taking new patients on a case by case basis. Dr. Madej is a genuine, intelligent, caring doctor and one of the few who actually cares about his patients getting better! Every time I see Dr. Madej to talk about my symptoms or tell him how things are going with my current lifestyle during a checkup, he always talks to me like another human being and loves getting to know the things I have been working on in my job, with my family, etc. The human element that Dr. Madej brings to his patients is above and beyond what most doctors do in today's society where insurance stresses shorter patient visits and higher costs. I see Dr. Madej for a minimum of 30-45 minutes for every appointment I make and he never rushes me; always being thorough with my bloodwork results and taking his time to examine my issues. Best of all, he is quite funny when you get to know him!! His practice is run very efficiently and I never have any issues scheduling appointments, obtaining bloodwork results, or receiving a response to emails. The office is family run and his wife and children who help him manage it are very polite and responsive to any requests one might have. Dr. Madej is one of the premier primary care physicians and internists in the area who has extensive knowledge spanning all areas of medicine. If he can't answer a medical question for you, he simply lets you know that it is out of his area of expertise and always refers you to another top-notch colleague/specialist that can help. He has not sold his expertise nor his integrity to the insurance companies. His goal is simply to help as many patients as he can and make a difference to each and every one of them in the type of care that he provides. I Live in North San Jose area and i would not hesitate for a bit to travel 20+ mile to see Dr. Madej because he is the best doctor :) and i know that i would get treated very well and trip would always be worth. I originally looked for a Doctor that I could go to early mornings on my way to work, however I think I hit the jackpot as far as Doctors go, Dr Madej spends the whole appointment with his patient, he doesn't send in a nurse to take the vitals. You also have the option to email the Doctor directly and have his cell phone number. I haven't had to use this, but it is a nice thing to know you can take advantage of. He is knowledgeable and straightforward with his diagnosis and answers any questions you have. His appointments are almost always exactly on time which is amazing after going to many doctors over many years and spending hours in waiting rooms because of poor or over-booking of patients... The waiting Room at Dr Madej's is small but clean and comfortable, but you will not usually spend much time in it unless you arrive way to early for your appointment. All in all, if you are looking for a doctor that is professional and to the point, this is your guy. Dr. John is great. I used to go to Stanford and while they may be good at surgeries, my doctor never followed on anything. After 7 years, I decided to find a doctor out of Stanford. I checked some of the doctors my Anthem insurance cover and reviewed the ratings. Doctor John questioned many of the previous labs and asked me what they recommended about the High PSA for prostate, the bad Cholesterol level, my colon exam, etc. I said nothing. I just went to my first appointment with Doctor Madej a couple of days ago and was so beyond pleasantly surprised by my experiences. This man completely exceeded my expectations for a new GP! I have a chronic condition which involves a lonnnnnng list of symptoms and a ton of pain. This condition has slowly whittled away at my life making it impossible for me to work, have a social life or enjoy any of the things which once gave me joy in life like making art. I've been going to doctor after doctor for the past 5+ years trying to get help. I've gotten really used to doctors being dismissive and not particularly concerned with the fact that my life has folded in on me. It's almost like I get given up on because no treatment has yet to help AT ALL. I've been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and because so many of my symptoms seemed to fit, I assumed they were right. Yet still I've remained just as sick, if not sicker. SO, because of all this bad past experience with doctors I tend not to walk into a new doctors office with particularly high expectations. To start off with, Doctor Madej was SO present and patient throughout our appointment. I felt really SEEN and heard and respected. At no point was I treated like a hypochondriac. It felt as if he really cared about what I was saying and I wasn't rushed at all. My appointment lasted for like an hour and 15 minutes! I've gotten so used to dismissive doctors who seem like they want to just rush through an appointment so they can see the next person in line that him taking his time really blew my mind. I've been signed up for a ton of testing, to see a bunch of specialists and have my second appointment set for the first week of the new year. Usually it takes months in between doctor appointments. Doctor Madej also believes I was likely misdiagnosed and I feel really secure that he's going to take every step in his power to find out what's going on with my body and help me get my life at least somewhat back. My husband went to see him and described him as a mediocre physician, and my husband is an easy-going fellow. John Madej then entered the realm of "Beyond NO WAY!" by showing how completely unprofessional he was in an email exchange regarding our request for a receipt for insurance. Long story short, they sent us one of those little receipts you might give for a garage sale - handwritten with a block stamp of the doctor's name. When I emailed asking for something more professional, this, along with the receipt, was his response: "Hi I have been working in private practice for 17 yrs and I know what is proper receipt or not. If your insurance or you require special statement with more information because of other reasons I don't mind providing it. What I printed for you is an billing invoice. I believe that I have had enough training in my life and don't need additional. If you are not happy with my services please let me know , I can give you back those $30 dollars and your husband can find a different physician. John Madej, MD" Really??? If I could give Dr Madej a thousand stars I would. He is the BEST Doctor, and one of the most competent and caring people I have ever met. If you want to go back to the days when your doctor looked at you as a person, and treated you like a human being instead of an insurance commodity, then you've found that man in him. He even answers his own phone. I find it especially amusing when I get the line from the pharmacist saying "We haven't been able reach your doctor all day" because I know he's always prompt. I look at them and, say "Really" Then I call him directly and when he answers, I ask if they'd like to talk to him. Dr Madej has always stood beside me gone above to help me in any crisis I've encountered. I did sign up for his concierge service and it's well worth it. Just the one time alone when I was in Wash DC on a Friday night and wasn't sure if I needed to go to the ER or not convinced me it was the best service option ever. I didn't end up having to spend all night in the ER waiting room because he was able to evaluate me online and advise me on what I needed to do. When I did need an ER once, Dr Madej was standing at the door waiting. For a UTI, I've never had to wait it out until I could get in to see a doctor while I suffered. There have been countless times Dr Madej has been there and although I could go on and on...just call him and find out for yourself. I came to California seeking medical help for an unknown, undiagnosed disease that I've been dealing with for 12+ years. My doctors at home had essentially given up on me and left me to fend for myself. There was no more empathy, no more concern. If they couldn't see it, it didn't exist. I will not get into details but I've lost 50 lbs. and a whole host of other daily problems. It was/is not a pleasant host of symptoms I deal with to put it mildly. I was referred to Dr. Madej by another fantastic doctor who thought he could offer a completely unique perspective on my symptoms and, ultimately, my disease(s). That would be a massive understatement. First and foremost, Dr. Madej made me very comfortable immediately. He was genuinely concerned from the second I stepped in and spent quite a bit of time with me going over previous treatments, etc... so he knew a bit more about me. He was also personally getting to know me. I could tell almost immediately how badly he wanted to help and his compassion was...honestly, I cried. I cried because he cared about me. I cried because he gave me hope and comfort for the first time in years. It felt as if a huge burden had been lifted from my shoulders. I wasn't fighting this alone anymore. Within 1 day, he was able to get me into Stanford University for a series of MRIs (none of which had been previously tried or thought of by my doctors at home). He also asked for a very comprehensive panel of blood work. He did this in 1 day. I'm astounded. Dr. Madej is everything that has been written already and more. Dr. Madej is atypical in the amount of time and care he puts into his patients. He does not give up when other doctors do, and thanks to that, my husband is alive today. My husband had a pulmonary embolism. Our original doctor and several specialists were not able to explain his symptoms and told us they were simply stress related. Aparently most people don't survive these embolisms so the symptons were not familiar to these doctors. They weren't familiar to Dr. Madej, either, but he did not give up. Dr. Madej knows how to get things done within the system. He truly is responsible for saving my husband's life. He is also wonderful with teens, young adults. I encourage you to check him out. He'll go out of his way to make sure you get the best care and he's got a great network of colleagues to tap into. Originally, he was only my wife's doctor but when I had to check into the ER and stay in the hospital one day, he volunteered to be my lead doctor. I was running around, basically trying to explain to each doctor what other doctors had told me. Then I switched to Dr Madej for my primary. What a world of difference! I am writing another post about my doctor because it's the least I can do from my bed steeped in gratitude and recovering from let's say dodging a medical bullet. I will spare you TMI but give you enough info as to why this doctor is the Chuck Norris of Doctors in this area... A hero. I am new to this area and have grown up very fortunate with the best medical care from my father ( a medical god among his patients) and his associates back in my hometown Pittsburgh, Pa. Friday afternoon I had a sudden sharp pain associated with a fever (never a good sign). At home with my toddler I needed to be seen. I called Dr. Madej and was not only able to reach him.... I was examined and admitted to hospital within hours (I live in fremont) after our conversation. He was in constant communication with me and made sure that I received appropriate tests for my symptoms (I called my elderly physician father whom I trust above all else and he was very impressed and grateful as well) there was no stone unturned in terms of finding out what was wrong and let's just say the three hour wait I would have endured in fremont to be seen by most likely a physician assistant or someone with far less experience and drive to see his patient better would have resulted in probably a misdiagnosis and potentially disastrous outcome for me and my young family. If you care greatly about your health and appreciate your life this doctor is a good match. Be advised that your health will be taken seriously so please respect this doctor. His care for me is outstanding and I'm so grateful to God that I found someone who cares for me as my dad would from 2000+ miles away. read more

Dr. Madej is a phenomenal doctor. He has taken care of me for six years, and my dad for one year. My dad relocated from the midwest after finding out he had cancer. He had full confidence in Dr. Madej, and was really happy with his care. Dr. Madej went out his way to help my Dad and verify that the hospital and chemotherapy care was coordinated. With regard to my care it's been exceptional. I've always been sick as a kid, and since seeing Dr. Madej, I have since turned the corner. He's diagnosed my genetic intolerance to gluten, a connective tissue disorder which showed that I have a bicuspid valve in my heart instead of tricuspid, and most importantly solved my ocular migraines, which caused me to go blind. I met with Dr Madej last year and he has been my primary care physician since then. I was desperately searching for a doctor who was genuinely invested in their patients. Someone who took the time to listen to them and not treat them as a thing on an assembly line. My search ended with Dr Madej and I couldn't be any happier. I've long had out of the book symptoms and most doctors just pretended to care about them. They were usually quick to reach conclusions. On the other hand, Dr Madej made sure I was tested and diagnosed appropriately. He understands my needs and chooses his referrals not by friendship but by expertise. When I told him the doctor he referred me wasn't available, he actually searched for another doctor for me. He didn't tell me to go with whoever was available. He's reachable by all means. Dr. Madej is amazing! Under Dr. Madej's care, we were able to address all of my concerns in one visit. When I conveyed my symptoms to Dr. Madej during my appointment, he ordered tests without any hesitation. The tests yielded results indicating that I had a common condition that was easily treatable. I appreciate Dr. Madej dedicating the time to investigate the concerns I raised; prior to my visit, I attributed my malaise to a vitamin deficiency or, even worse, just me being a psychosomatic patient. Thanks to him, I have been properly diagnosed and am now on the road to recovery! In addition to his expertise and knowledge, Dr. Madej has a terrific bedside manner. Also, it is important to note that Dr. Madej's wife is the office manager and she is a very kind individual. She and her husband both create a welcoming environment for patients. I typically seek out larger practices, however after this experience, I prefer the intimate, warm office atmosphere that they've achieved. Lastly, Dr. Madej is the most accessible person I've met in his field. He responds to e-mails promptly (I wrote him one time at midnight and he responded at 6:30am) and will even see you outside of his regular office hours if his schedule permits. read more

Dr. Madej is a wonderful doctor and person. He is every bit as good as other reviewers have expressed. He is so good that I drive 25 miles each way to see him when I have to. As an example, when I had bronchitis, he saw me over the weekend. He checked on my while he was overseas on vacation. When I cut my hand over the weekend, he had me send him a picture, so he could recommend whether or not I needed stitches. Unfortunately, to be able to maintain his practice, Dr. Madej won't be able to offer these "concierge-like" services for free anymore. I'm in my 60's so I've had lots of doctors over the years. Dr. Madej is by far the best I've ever had, and I'm pretty picky. I've yet to call with a problem that he didn't immediately start to trouble shoot. And that's what most doctors aren't, trouble shooters. His mental gears start rolling even before I hit his office - and he almost always brings a patient in the same day they call with a problem (at least that's been my experience) and he works with them on such a personal level to get them the treatment they need - he communicates with us via private cell phone and an app. When my daughter was working and going to college in the North Bay, if she called with a medical problem he would stay late to see her since she couldn't get back to this area until 6-7pm. And if we needed him on a weekend, he made himself available - what modern Big Box medical centers have doctors who do that? So, he goes out of his way to make sure his patients get treatment of some kind even if that means he has to sacrifice his own time to do it. He reminds me of the country doctor who puts patients over profit. His wife (I think a nurse) runs the office which is quiet and clean. They don't overbook patients and you can be assured your call to him does not go unanswered (sometimes he answers it himself which always catches me off guard lol). He also refers patients to top specialists if it's a problem out of his scope though honestly, I'm pretty sure he can treat just about anything. He'll call the specialist right there in front of you to get you in - and they do it! He has connections and he uses them to get you the best possible care. While I was being treated elsewhere I'd be told, "Oh, you have Madej? I heard he's really great!". YES HE IS! He has fought hard to stay out of the Kaiser, PAMF conglomerates (though he has privileges at many hospitals and will come to see you in you're admitted). He works with the patient on his schedule and does not cave into an allotted insurance time frame. With medical care becoming so sadly government controlled, he tries his best to hang in there and continue to treat his patients to the best of his ability - which is why an appointment with him isn't limited to what the insurance will allow. That means he goes without the kickbacks insurance companies give physicians, so he has a concierge type program (which you pay for but he'll even come to your home) for those who want even more private and personalized care from him. He treats you like a human being - not a number and gives Rx samples when money or insurance coverage is lacking.. True, he's not the hand holding, warm and cozy type, but he LISTENS, is caring, intellectually brilliant, amazingly accurate, and deeply concerned about the care of his patients as we slip into government controlled oblivion. There's a reason he received the 2017 TOP DOCTOR AWARD. This was voted on by his peers, but I can assure you that he also receives that HONOR and respect from his patients. read more
