    Celebrating Joe's 40th Birthday!
    Anna I.

A+ I hosted my husbands 40th birthday party here. He loves a good dive bar! We had the back room to ourselves. They provided trays of finger food and everything was nicely set up in the back area. Our waitress was Jane and she was amazing. She kelp the drinks flowing for our guests. Thank you for a wonderful party!

My nephew who lives nearby treated us to an al fresco meal recently while visiting for a family event. My pulled pork smashed burger was everything you want in a packed meat sandwich, with an onion ring and tangy sauce on the brioche bun. The sweet potato fries and a refreshing mocktail to drink made for a perfect meal. Sweetie ate a pasta bolognese (I think) which looked and ate good, and drowned it with a nice glass of red wine. It was packed on the Friday night we visited, with folks lined up for seating, or to hang at the bar and enjoy the bar scene. No reservations. Our late dinner worked fine as the mostly millennial and Gen-Z crowd started thinning shortly after we arrived. Millburn has always been a draw for neighboring townsfolk in search of a meal out. I remember this foodie town from 25 years ago, when its pizza, kosher and diner offerings were top notch. It seems to have upgraded its food scene several notches since my last visit so many years ago. Pure nostalgia for me which made for a very flavorful evening. TOP TIP: Street parking in this part of town is a hassle and the local cops keep a sharp eye for illegally parked cars and inebriated drivers. So park further away from the center of town where you are more likely to snag a legal spot on a busy night.

The chicken parm was pounded thin and delicious, and the orecchiette with broccoli rabe and sausage came with a massive portion. Also an honorable mention for the bread basket which was overflowing with fresh and hot seasoned bread. Service was speedy and friendly, holiday decor was cute and there is a full bar. The Garlic Knots are so delicious; the knots are so fluffy and soft though firm like chewing savory (more so texture wise) cotton candy that does not dissolve. With every bite, flavoring seems to improve, especially with the soft though thicker than thinner more savory than sweet tomatoe-ish sauce. From my order experience, the mozzarella after flavor lingers with the garlic after flavor for about 30 and 40 hours. Yum, though I prefer the garlic more so than the mozzarella, all quite tasty. The establishment accepts different forms of payment. The establishment connects with a neighboring eatery, by way of a mid way pass, and both establishments offer different selections. The drinks: We decided to start with drinks. My friend had the Moscow mule and I had the Bloody Mary. My bloody Mary was very good and strong and came with 3 huge olives. The olives tasted fresh. I've had weird tasting olives in other places. I liked it so much, I had another. Big mistake... My friend liked her Moscow Mule. The food: I had the turkey burger with bacon and avocado and truffle fries. The burger was cooked to perfection. It was not dry, but juicy without being under cooked. The bacon was perfect and the slices of avocado were fresh. My friend ordered the Ham Benedict. I didn't taste it but she said it was very good. The eggs looked perfectly done. That came with a side of potatoes. I think this will be my new brunch spot when I come to visit North Jersey. I recommend them.

Everything in my previous review still stands - it's still an interesting hybrid of family restaurant, sport bar and lounge. Since my previous review I've had some of the food and it's as expected - average to a bit below average fitting for how I viewed the place before having food. I've managed to try a burger here and was disappointed. I asked for medium-well, it was beyond well done. Dry and not very well seasoned at that. The fries were unacceptable. Plentiful but I'm almost positive these are Ore-Ida frozen fries. The bar pie was also pretty sad. It's about 4 medium slices of thin crust pizza with average sauce flavor. It seemed a bit burnt. I also got a plate of buffalo wings to share with my buddies. Again average. It wouldn't be so bad but the prices are pretty high. All of the things I've tried were $15+ and they ranged from not good to average. The bartenders do put a lot of effort in interacting with you and do well keeping drinks going but the food and the experience is a bit dicey. The locals that frequent here are friendly and have resulted in conversations which help the experience here.

Seating at the bar was a bit crowded. Jimmy the bartender was great in service but busy, but the seat I had was right behind the taps so I didn't have much space for the plate of food -- recommend getting a table next time or watch where you want to sit - plenty of space for a glass of beer, but not for a plate. The half plate of wings - a lot of garlic parm sauce on top, and while not the best wings (lacked any crisp), the sauce was nice and thick and heavy - albeit salty, but that's ok for wings. I have a thing for tuna so when I see it on the menu, I definitely have to order it. I got it medium originally. I enjoyed it, but I sent it back to be cooked well which was even better. That was so cool. It was an option. My waiter was Frank. He let me know. I could send it back to get cooked more. My Bestie ordered the mushroom raviolis. I'm not really a mushroom fan, but the ravioli was awesome. So if you want to try mushroom differently, I do recommend this dish. Noni's chicken was basically smothered chicken, mashed potatoes and spinach. I'm Jamaican so that was a good spin on what I'm used to which is my stew chicken. Shawn, I'm not sure if he's the manager most likely is he came around and said hello just to make sure we were enjoying our time. We definitely want to make this spot more of a regular spot for us. We truly enjoyed it. Everything came up to like $200. It's also a train station so in the back it's the restaurant but you can see that during the day it's a functioning train station. I thought that was so cool. When we left the restaurant and got to our car, a train was riding by so it just gives a very good "movie feel". The food is so creative, fresh, and delicious, the service is attentive and knowledgeable and consistent (not the norm in the suburbs), and we love the ambiance. It was a gorgeous night to sit outside, but we opted for our favorite - bar seats to watch the action. It's hard to find this level of consistency and creativity even in NYC, but to have it right here in Maplewood is so wonderful. So many restaurants in the suburbs rely on frozen, pre-made items from large restaurant supply chains that finding innovative cooking completely from scratch is a real challenge. In a sea of mediocre restaurants, Perla lives up to its name: a true gem! We have been so impressed by the daily specials this summer. We started out with a scallop crudo with yuzu, jalapeno, and shallots that is my favorite crudo right now. We followed that with the new shrimp tostada and I'm only sorry we didn't order two. Later in our meal, I spied a couple at the other end of the bar who did it right: the wife took one bite and immediately ordered a second one so that she wouldn't have to share. This is the second time we've had the tomato salad with olives, shiso, and white balsamic and I can't get over the flavor combination - it's so unexpected and addictive. We can't pass up the broiled oysters with garlic butter, Calabrian chili, and crispy shallots - a dish I was obsessed with the moment I tried it at a pop-up event before the restaurant even existed. Then we had the broiled branzino with lemon, capers, and a watercress salad - again, the only mistake was not ordering two! We were actually down the shore yesterday, but came home because we were craving this dish. We finished off our meal with anchovy toast, which our favorite dessert paired with a crisp Txakolina. It's four pieces of toasted baguette with a generous spread of really good butter topped with one piece of salt-cured anchovy and one boqueron (a pickled anchovy). I can't recommend this dish highly enough, it is perfectly balanced! We love a BYOB, but it is such a luxury that we can order right from our phones at the restaurant from a local wine shop (Lum's Cellars). It's a curated list that has some really fantastic options that all go so well with the cuisine. We started with an Alberiño and then ordered the Txakolina. No notes! We can't wait for our next meal at Perla.
