The store is huge and the staff were super friendly. It made the experience even better! Inside the store, it is very well organized. I was surprised by the size of Bigfoot at the front entrance. Anywho, I didn't know cheese could be aged from 1 to 20 years old! Blew my mind away. I got so carried away that I walked out with over $100 worth of cheese. Either way, the experience was great! If you have a chance to visit Wisconsin for a day or two, take some cheese to go!

Lol…read more This might not be the biggest cheese shop in Wisconsin, but they have a better variety of cheeses than most: I like softer cheeses like Havarti more than cheddar and they had a few outstanding ones, namely the Havarti with horseradish and the Farmer's cheese. The service was great, too, suggestions and samples were both given freely; I mean they really gave you their time and attention. You know, like it is supposed to be. We didn't make a very big purchase because we were on a road trip, but now that I know how good Kugel's is, I won't hesitate to order and spend the money on shipping.

They had Pies and lots of fresh-made goods for sale, and they even had local frozen meats. This is a definite must-stop on your way in and out of Sturgeon Bay!

I tasted a gouda (Marieke Golden), a garlic and herb BellaVitano, an aged white cheddar, and a hatch pepper gouda. I ate lots of little bites of cheese, which was very satisfying. They have all types of cheese made from three types of milk: cow's milk, goat's milk, sheep's milk, plus cheese made from a mixture of two or three. The cheese shop is small, so the cheese tasting happens right at the counter. After your tasting, you can say bye-bye and leave, or you can buy-buy some cheese to take with you. They also have other snacks that go with cheese, like crackers, nuts, jams, and candies. They also have cheese accessories, like cheese purses, shirts and other things.

The first and obvious sign is the freshness factor. The proper octave of squeak is just not present in most of your basic b curds. Biting into Laney curds sounded like a happy pup gnawing on its favorite squeak toy. The most satisfying squeak of a fresh cheese curd upon gently pressing your fangs into them.. really knows no comparison. Next is proper saltiness. This cheese is too salty for me..said no one..ever. Laney curds had just the right amount of salt to keep you coming back for more but without feeling the need to fill up on worthless water, taking up much needed stomach real estate for precious cheese curds. Lastly, the texture is key. Soft but not rubbery and firm enough to produce the squeak is the sweet spot these curds achieved. Let them warm to room temp, and the softness produces a new and novel texture, making the thought of devouring the entire pound a near maddening obsession. Now that I have properly described the quality of the best cheese known to human kind, I can comment on other aspects of the business. Their small shop surrounded by farmland with homemade products is quite appealing. We were greeted with friendly service and found the price to be very competitive in regards to the cheese curd market value. Highly recommended, would nom their cheese again.
