This was a mandatory stop for us every time we passed by this place when it used to be located along US 141. Now that 141 has been rerouted to bypass Lena's main street, Kugel's is a little out of the way off of 141, but we still love it just as much. Here they have the widest cheese selection I have seen anywhere, by the pound, sliced or by the brick. You can sample a bite before you buy. I like their garlic cheddar and pepper jack. I also like their string cheese whips. And of course there's the squeaky fresh cheese curds you can't avoid. While there, pick up a bag of Old Wisconsin beef sticks. At 100 calories per stick, you can turn those little sausages into a whole day's meal. Surprisingly addictive, I limit my consumption to 2 sticks a day. Besides cheese and sausage, they have maple syrup, honey, jams and Wisconsin souvenirs. They also carry Baraboo Candy Co. products like the famous Cowpie (ginormous turtle) and chocolate covered raisins. The place is very tourist-friendly with a bench to sit down in front, clean (but cramped) bathrooms. And if you wonder where the Packer fans get their wedge-shaped cheese hats, here it is!

The fresh cheese curds are amazing and you have to try the mozzarella strings that kind of look like spaghetti.

As a lifetime connoisseur of cheese curds, I like to think I know the right factors to look for in…read moreevaluating exceptional curd quality. The Laney curds were as good as they get! The first and obvious sign is the freshness factor. The proper octave of squeak is just not present in most of your basic b curds. Biting into Laney curds sounded like a happy pup gnawing on its favorite squeak toy. The most satisfying squeak of a fresh cheese curd upon gently pressing your fangs into them.. really knows no comparison. Next is proper saltiness. This cheese is too salty for me..said no one..ever. Laney curds had just the right amount of salt to keep you coming back for more but without feeling the need to fill up on worthless water, taking up much needed stomach real estate for precious cheese curds. Lastly, the texture is key. Soft but not rubbery and firm enough to produce the squeak is the sweet spot these curds achieved. Let them warm to room temp, and the softness produces a new and novel texture, making the thought of devouring the entire pound a near maddening obsession. Now that I have properly described the quality of the best cheese known to human kind, I can comment on other aspects of the business. Their small shop surrounded by farmland with homemade products is quite appealing. We were greeted with friendly service and found the price to be very competitive in regards to the cheese curd market value. Highly recommended, would nom their cheese again.

Let's check it out! So glad we did! This business has been in the same family for generations and it's currently run by a very interesting older lady. What a hoot! You will get a history lesson about cheese and her family and get to hear about her really old cheese! The whole time she told the stories she was handing out good sized samples of 15 year old cheddar! (Awesome) Not the biggest or by any means newest "showroom" but the history is really cool and the cheese is spectacular. Letters on the wall from stars (such as actor Greg Kinnear) and other local and national celebrities. And of course the cheddar! (She'll tell you about any of them!). And how did they find this place? Lots of other cheeses and sausages or things to fill out a gift basket to buy too.

My husband and I shared: - Loaded Cheese Curds - French Onion Melt - Hot Honey Chicken Mac And Cheese - Strawberry Basil Lemonade Everything was fantastic. The cheese curds were the best we had while in Wisconsin. The flavor of the French Onion melt was so good. I loved the hot honey addition to the mac and cheese. We bought a ton of their cheese too and it was fantastic. They have so many other great goodies too. If I lived nearby, I would be here all the time. This is a must stop in Door County!

They had a wide range of cheeses and oils out for sampling, and the staff was friendly and walked us through the different varieties. One of them had us try a cheese dip with ghost peppers, which was hands down our favorite, creamy up front with a slow burn that built after. We picked up some cheddar, a tub of that dip, and a few beers for the road. We also grabbed food from the in-store café: a grilled French onion sandwich, tomato basil soup, and cheese curds. The sandwich and soup were the standouts. The curds were fresh and squeaky. We finished with their ice cream, which held up to everything else we'd eaten. The prices were low enough that the whole stop felt like a steal. A must-visit when you're in Sturgeon Bay.
