I have passed Joe's Café countless times and have always wanted to stop in for a bite. I finally made it. Joe's has plenty of parking. The inside looks like your hometown diner type place. Everyone I encountered was pleasant. I came in at 8 on a Friday morning. I was sat right away. Got my coffee rolling. Good, hot coffee to sip while I perused the menu. This is old school diner food. they are only open for breakfast and lunch so plan accordingly. I love a good stuffed chile so I chose the Chile Relleno breakfast. It came with one chile relleno, two eggs, hash browns and refried beans. The whole thing got a good smother of their green chili and cheese. This was hearty stuff. Delicious! Joe's Cafe is your stereotypical divey breakfast joint. The inside looks like your grandmas house. Don't even think about asking for a non-dairy milk option for your coffee. They have packaged half & half and sweet n' low, and standard sugar for your enjoyment. I ordered the 2x2x2 with the apple oatmeal pancakes. All the food was yummy, the apple oatmeal pancakes were quite large and heavy, very filling. They have standard store syrup and no maple syrup available. Coffee was coffee. Service was pretty good. I must comment on the odd bathroom setup with two toilets but no doors to the stalls but I think the main door locked for privacy. I'd come back after a night out drinking. It breaks my heart to write a review like this, for a place that has been around for so long like Joe's. The food I had was fairly bland and unremarkable, and $16 for a breakfast entree is frankly insulting, considering other breakfast spots in the area (Breadwinners, McCoys) do so much more for that same or lower price point. There was also a $2 fee tacked onto my bill for paying with a credit card that was not mentioned anywhere. The ambiance was fine and a friendly staff. However, the misleading pricing left a sour taste. When the bill came, I was taken aback by the discrepancy, over $40 for two people. It felt like a bait-and-switch tactic that tarnished my experience. While the quality of the food and drink was decent, it didn't justify the inflated prices. I appreciate cafés that offer good value, but this one left me feeling frustrated and misled. I can't recommend it unless they revise their pricing transparency-which they said to me upon paying that they would fix on yelp/facebook. It pains me this place has gone down so much, honestly. My husband and his family have frequented this place for decades, but in the last year+ it's taken a nose dive. We decided to come in for breakfast with our kids, we ordered: *A blueberry pancake *2 strips of bacon/2eggs/hashbrowns *4 eggs/ a hamburger patty/hashbrowns *Sausage skillet *Breakfast burrito with bacon and sausage (to go). Their prices have definitely skyrocketed, and I know- inflation is hitting everyone hard but that said, tell me why a burger patty is $8... just the patty. Not a burger. Just the patty. The food is typical diner food- which in most situations has the potential to be great, but here- not so much anymore. The burger patty was hard as a brick, trying to cut through it with a fork will definitely leave an impression from the fork on your finger, interesting. Eggs were waaayyyy overcooked- dry, rubbery, it's quite the magic trick to be able to stab into a scrambled egg and the entire thing lifts off of the plate in a single motion. Would have been nice to know they are now charging a "$4.95 admin fee" when you pay with a card as opposed to cash... perhaps put a sign up to let people know ahead of time? Once it was all said and done, between the food, tip and "admin fee", we paid close to $90 for a family of 4 to eat breakfast and take one burrito to go. Bit excessive for a diner in my opinion. Sadly, as much as we used to love this place- things have just gone too far downhill for our liking. Which really sucks because it was nice having a homey-diner so close by with decent food. Great coffee .What I'm upset about is the waitress ripped me off for $10 bucks . The food came to $8.90 cents . I gave her a $20.00 bill . I received $1.10 from her . I thought wow did I miss something here . I was tired and had to rush out . I didn't realize she gave me the wrong change until I was out the door . I even tipped her 4 more since I'm not a bad tipper . I've waited tables for years . I know it's hard labor . So I wanted to try a new mom and pop place and this place did it for me. Very old school classic dinner feel if your looking for that. Staff very attentive and they smile. I had their Mexican steak breakfast since I asked the server for their recommendation. Beef tips with 2 eggs, refried beans and your choice of flour or corn tortilla. It was covered in their version of green Chile. Which I have found can be made several different ways. Theirs was more sweet then I prefer and they say pork green Chile was kind of tough to taste that pork. Really soupy so id recommend a little or corn starch. They definitely look like they have a local following so that is good. Crowd was not an issue as it's kinda of tucked away from the main Kipling & 44th. So Yelp it like I did. Great food, I've eaten there more than once, always consistently good for a good price. Cash is welcomed, which I consider a big plus, but I am sure they don't mind credit cards either.
