    Carne Guisada

I wouldn't even give this place one star! It's not the same at all, the carne gusada has NO flavor! (I couldn't eat it) the time wait SUCKS 15 min just for 2 burritos and a pint of hot sauce (came out to $17) no wonder why the place looks dead ‍ yeah I'd rather go to Jalisco

    Lunch Buffet Monday thru Friday.

I always forget about this place, probably because it is placed in the middle of a neighborhood. I leave satisfied. I partook of of the Lunch Buffet. Started with a small bowl of menudo, which had plenty of hominy. Good menudo in my book. From there, moved to the cheese enchiladas with rice and beans. I'm not a huge fan of cheese enchiladas but these were okay. I finished with their carne guisada with rice and beans, which was my favorite from the Buffet. You could also make a crispy taco if interested. They also have homemade chips and a challenging hot sauce if you like it on the warmer side. I rate this place for what it is - a neighborhood hole-in-the-wall.

My family members have service dogs that are "medical service dogs" we had to wait for the people in front of us, and all the ones behind us to get their tables. My family members told the hosts that they are discriminating because they had "service dogs" and that she was going to call corporate and the medical association to report the discrimination from the hosts and front desk. After my family member told them that, they proceeded to sit us down in the corner as she had a very angry face. After we had finished our meal, my family member went to the front to ask for the hosts name, the lady refused to give her name as my Aunt stated she was going to contact the owner/corporate a lot this issue. If you have a "service dog" be prepared to be waiting longer than someone who don't. We will never eat here again. We are looking into possible legal action

Boy are we glad we did! The restaurant is very quaint and clean, the service was GREAT, and the food was AMAZING. We had egg rolls, egg drop soup, Pork Egg Fu Young and Shrimp with Lobster sauce. The food was so good we ordered more egg fu young and an order of Almond Chicken to take home. The shrimp was so fresh and the chicken was tasty. I love how they put thin slices of pork on top of the egg fu young with the gravy. That way you can taste the wonderful, fluffy texture of the egg fu young patties and enjoy the meat on the side. We live 2 hours away but plan on going back again very soon, I will definitely drive 2 hours just to eat there.

As for food... we have been coming here for YEARS, and the consistency in dishes/drinks is not there. It makes me extremely sad, especially when we pay well over $200 each visit. For example- I always get the Chilean Sea Bass- many times it's lightly seared, leaving the fish delicate in tenderness and flavor. Tonight it was like Furr's Cafeteria . It was heavy with oil and the outside was extremely crispy, like a deep fried filet- so discouraging. As for dessert, I was offered a "complimentary" one for my birthday, but was still charged $12.00 for it. I didn't say anything... but really??? I had this same dessert last week, and this week the pretzel crusted bottom was far too buttery and over-powering-- so not only did the "complimentary" birthday dessert cost, it also was not finished. Finally, the evening started with drinks- my choice, an espresso martini. At the bar, the lady asked if I wanted "creamy and sweet" and I said "neither"-- what she gave me was AMAZING! She said if I reordered at the table later to say the same to our waiter, with my name. I did, and ... yikes- not even close to the same flavor. Overall, we love coming here for the atmosphere and waitstaff, but the consistency in quality of food keeps regressing. It truly makes me sad.

There are other places--Caprock Cafe, Cujo's, etc.--that are somewhat similar to The Spoon, but the food here absolutely blows those other guys outta the water. The pizza may be the best in Lubbock. If you're a fan of the old Pizza Inn pizza, you'll love this stuff because it's based upon the same recipe. The wings are also excellent although I wish they'd offer an extremely hot sauce option. Cheese sticks are also top notch. As for the chili, the flavor is very good and the spice level is just high enough to make it interesting but not so high as to scare off Yankees and Californians. Problem is, it's fairly fatty. They need to grind their own beef and thereby control for fat. The service is decent. Neither great nor bad although certainly cordial enough. As for the atmosphere, it's pretty good so long as they're playing classic country through the sound system. However, there have been times when rap blasts from the kitchen and that's a deal-breaker. It absolutely doesn't belong here. In the last analysis, if you want an authentic slice of Lubbock and West Texas with some outstanding chow at a reasonable price, The Spoon is where you need to be.
