First, if you're craving Texas cooking in a dive bar atmosphere with beaucoup boob toob screens on the walls, this is the only place in Lubbock for you. There are other places--Caprock Cafe, Cujo's, etc.--that are somewhat similar to The Spoon, but the food here absolutely blows those other guys outta the water. The pizza may be the best in Lubbock. If you're a fan of the old Pizza Inn pizza, you'll love this stuff because it's based upon the same recipe. The wings are also excellent although I wish they'd offer an extremely hot sauce option. Cheese sticks are also top notch. As for the chili, the flavor is very good and the spice level is just high enough to make it interesting but not so high as to scare off Yankees and Californians. Problem is, it's fairly fatty. They need to grind their own beef and thereby control for fat. The service is decent. Neither great nor bad although certainly cordial enough. As for the atmosphere, it's pretty good so long as they're playing classic country through the sound system. However, there have been times when rap blasts from the kitchen and that's a deal-breaker. It absolutely doesn't belong here. In the last analysis, if you want an authentic slice of Lubbock and West Texas with some outstanding chow at a reasonable price, The Spoon is where you need to be. read more

It was amazing to come back home to Lubbock where I grew up and went to school. We had to drive over and see our favorite dive bar that we frequented in college formerly called the "Spoon". The bar and restaurant had not changed much and we had a great time with old friends having drinks. Ice cold beer and the famous cherry bombs were a hit. The best part of coming back to the Texas Cafe was the service. We had the best service after ordering drinks and appetizers. Our family has been coming here for years. Yesterday, we had all the friends come out to celebrate the life of a dear friend that passed. Many years ago, he was a bartender here, so this was how we wanted to honor him. We called and gave notice a day or 2 before, and ended up having around 30 people come. Briana (Bri) took care of all of us and did an absolutely amazing job. For a group this big, you'd expect delays, but that didn't happen. Great dive bar in Lubbock! Cold beer, including Dos Equis on tap, that is a rarity. Sat at the bar, fast service! Ordered the brisket burrito (or taco?). Damn good food! Wish our experience was better! Waited over an hour for brisket fries. Waitress said she forgot to put the order in. She then said they had run out fries and had to go get some and they were now in the fryer. When we finally got the fries she set them down and said "fresh brisket fries, so sorry about that!" They were barely warm!!! They were in no way hot or fresh. And she charged us full price. Our waitress was young and sweet and cute, but literally didn't know what a michelada was, so we said it real slow with zero Spanish accent, and she got two for a friend and I on a pretty busy Saturday night. She was so honest in her effort to figure out what we were ordering (much appreciated), and the bar tender clearly knew what was up, because the two micheladas we were eventually brought were really perfect. I am picky about how weak my favorite drink often is, especially at not-Mexican places, but these were spot on spicy. The table ordered a pitcher of some sort of sinister sweet frozen cherry sinfulness. It made my teeth click together from the sweet, but by the bottom of the pitcher it was making all of our right eyes twitch from how stiff it was. Not sure I'd ever order the stuff myself, but the boyfriend was enthusiastic about it. Three of us ate there. A pizza, the Spoon nachos, and the brisket fries were ordered. I got the fries, and ate every single last damn one when it probably could have fed three people. They were that good / I was that hungry. A girlfriend ordered the nachos and said they were too spicy, which I think is really wimpy. I suppose if you can handle any normal level of spice they were mild at most. Order accordingly. The friend who got the pizza talked about how good it was, like, every third bite. It was an 8-inch personal pizza, and he scarfed the whole thing down. I am really impressed with the food we had, and I rarely am at what seem like run-of-the-mill, ~ooh look we're in Texas, we're a BBQ joint~ places, but this outfit seems to be the real deal. On Saturday there was music playing over the sound system that was very 'Oh, I know this song!' country & classics, then later on a funk band came on (quite the gear shift) dressed in Creamsicle Orange and white. They were fabulous and we had so much fun grooving for the little time we were there while they played. There were people up front dancing, and it was so fun! Overall a really positive experience. Probably one of the few places I have been that truly makes me think of a bar you might see in a movie. Wood bar tops and a place for dancing and local bands all included. We went during lunch for their Friday buffet, so we didn't get to experience the evening bar life. The lunch buffet was better than most buffets I have had in Lubbock, especially for $10. Buffet included beans, mac & cheese, corn on the cob, several meat choices, corn bread and a few other sides. Everything was good except for the corn and coleslaw., but I am picky about coleslaw. Horrible service and rude employees. I was in a few weeks ago and asked the waitress if I could order pizzas over the phone and charge for them to pick up. I was told yes. Today I called and the lady who was already not friendly before I told her I wanted to give my credit card, that I could not do so. When I told her I was told by waitress I could, see said it was not her fault someone else told me I could do so and actually giving a card over the phone was "sketch'. I asked for a manager and she said there was not one. I explained to her that she was not customer friendly and she announced she was hanging up. THIS is Texas. Not those canned places where they wrap everything up into a nice little predictable package, tie it with a bow and market it. The Texas Cafe - 'The Spoon' is it is called by locals - is Texas in a nutshell. Or perhaps Texas in a peanut shell, cracked open, thrown on the ground and crushed. On a good night you'll have a Texas band playing Texas rock or Texas country on stage, and the place will be packed to the brim with locals getting drunk. There will be dancing. There will be pool played. And on really good night you'll probably get flashed by someone who's boobs or penis you really didn't want to see. You may even see a fight break out. Does it represent the best of Texas? Probably not. But it's real. Rednecks and musicians and college kids and artists and drunks and people from all walks of life. Rumor has it they serve some mean BBQ during the day, but I've never been for food. I can attest to the cheap beer, and cheap pitchers of cherry bombs (a strong frozen concoction) that if you drink too much of you'll be puking red the next day. AHHH the spoon-- the cherry bombs (made with everclear) are 5 dollars for a pitcher on sunday-- also they have live music on that night. Mondays they have free poker through a tournament run by tish. Karen and I went here for the Wednesday night pizza buffet. $4.00 for all you can eat pizza 7-9pm is an awesome deal, especially since the pizza is good quality, not like some Cici's crap. Also $1.50 draft beers, and a band that started at 8:00. The service was perfect--attentive as it should be, but not too in your face. Very casual atmosphere--don't be intimidated by the Harleys in the parking lot, the place is very friendly and laid back. I had been to the Spoon back when I was in high school in the early 80s, but this was the first time since then. We definitely plan to go back. read more

The music kicked ass. The bathroom has been updated and was awesome. But... the service from the wait staff was so bad, just so bad. "Tasia"was our waitress. I spilled a little of my drink. I asked for a napkin and sure enough I got "a napkin". A single 4"-square cocktail napkin. A few minutes later she stopped by and said "I'm sorry but y'all didn't order drinks from me. The French fries were the best we've had - they're battered so crisp on the outside, soft on the inside. Just perfection. A family basket turned out to be the must-have. Stopped in to eat bbq because my wife used to hang out here back in her college days. Great atmosphere and the music was classic rock all the way. Service was great, bartender was very nice. Food was to be expected for bbq in Texas. The double fried poppers were to die for, wow. All round good place, I want to come back at night to catch their live music. I really enjoy meeting friends there for their beer specials But my main complaint and every person that I've talked to about The Spoon in this town is that the STAFF particularly the BARTENDERS ( there's been 2 that I've seen A man and a tall Girl) are Very Rude and Unwelcoming...One experience I walked in went to the ordering station at the bar and Waited there patiently for at least 8 to 10 minutes while the Guy Bartender was just talking to a few people sitting at his bar..He seen me standing there You would think he'd say something like "I'll be right with just gimme a sec" Or something..Not only was Ibwaiting to order but the waitress was standing beside me waiting for him to make her drink or she had put in about the same time as when I got there...So my friend that I was meeting there came up to the bar and to get his attention She was like "Excuse me Can we order Please"...The Male Bartender got so visibly upset That he even said "Cant you see, I'm trying to have a Conversation Over Here"...We just kinda stood there in Shock ...I was like well I've been waiting patiently here for to place an order and I believe your waitress placed a drink order as well...He was extremely Rude I have worked in the Bar business for over 20 years and had never witnessed a staff member Be this Rude to a paying customer it really blew my mind...This is just one incident in particular that I'm writing about but it seems to be an ongoing trend at this place especially after I talked with other customers there about my experiences They all had similar stories..Now the Younger Tall lady is Rude as Well..My friend and myself ordered 2 beers from her..Well my friends beer was hot and half foam..So she took it back to her and was like "I'm sorry but my beer is really hot and it's just half foam".The girl was like "Well yeah because I had to change the keg"..So my friend said well do u think you can pour me s different one please..The bartender got So upset she grabbed it three it in the trash poured her another While proceeding to roll her eyes the whole time..I was just standing there like Oh my gosh I have never in my life met a staff that is that Unfriendly and Unwelcoming to their Customers EVER....We really enjoy going there because it's close to our house and we like the Environment but This Bar Staff really needs a strong dose of Reality..Without your Paying Customers You would not have a Bar.. It's also a biker bar, but please don't judge people here. Everyone is accepting of others. I'm gay, and my girlfriend and I experienced discrimination and intolerance at Chips Sports Bar (read that review for an explanation). Therefore, we immediately stopped going there. Now we spend our time and our money at Texas Cafe (aka The Spoon). Complete acceptance by owner, wait staff, and customers. Trust me -- when we went there for the first time in a long time after our Chips experience, we asked our waitress point blank if anyone would have issues with our patronage. The answer was an emphatic NO! She even verified it with the owner, who said he would never treat us that way and would never allow anyone else in his bar to do it either. This bar is AWESOME!! "The Spoon" is great. If you know this place by that name in instead of the Texas Cafe then you know what I'm talking about. Ive been going there for almost ten years now and when you are craving a good ole gritty dive and you are in or around Lubbock then this is the place to go. I think the only food ive ever had there was the pizza but that memory is so fuzzy that it could have well been something else. 3 too many pitchers of cherry bombs will do that to a memory. The bands that play there are usually pretty good, I would recommend checking out when Elvis T. Busboy and the Blues Butchers are going to be there.... that group has one of the best guitarists I have ever seen live. ... but then again that could be the cherry bombs talking so go check it out for yourself if you're not too pretentious. read more
