I've been eating at JJ's for years, but this is my first time trying the one in Fairfield. The shop is a decent size and clean, it was quiet and unassuming, even though a football game was on. The stores ambiance was bright and clean 4/5. There was only one gentleman in the front and one cook in the back. It did take a little long for the food to come out but because it was piping hot I respected that they took the time to make everything fresh, service 4.5/5. I ordered fried oysters, jalapeños with cheese, red beans and rice, and garlic noodles with shrimp. The jalapeño poppers were some of the best I've had and I dipped them in their hot sauce and was ready to go but a whole found of just the poppers lol, 4.8/5. The oysters were tasty and devoured within 15 minutes of opening and the fries served with ate sugary and delicious 4/5. The garlic noodles with shrimp was beyond delicious, the shrimp was super fresh, not over cooked, and smelled so amazing my kitten harassed me for an hour trying to break into the container 4.5/5. Now to the not so great part. I ordered red beans and rice, and as a creole person, it was offensive. The rice was well cooked so I'll give credit where it's due, but the beans tasted like not even salt was added so them. No Smokey flavors, no seasoning, no veggies (I like bell pepper, onion, and garlic in mine minimum), no meat... just bland beans and white rice. I even added their hot sauce to it hoping it would help, but it just made it worse. I have never been treated so terrible in my life from a restaurant! I ordered catfish from door dash and it was raw. The fries weren't even cooked all the way. I called several times and when I finally got through and explained what happened the guy at 6:12 pm on tuesday October 6th, hung up on me. I called back a few more times and asked for the manager. The same dude put me on hold and came back trying to act like a different person name Andy. He then hung up on me again. This all could have been resolved by apologizing and refunding me. They got my online order wrong. I ordered catfish nuggets and wings, but I didn't receive any wings--just a bunch of catfish nuggets that were mostly batter with barely any fish. I went there on Sunday. I got the catfish and fries. The catfish was crispy on the outside, but the inside was mushy and raw. It made me feel sick to my stomach. Then I went back a couple days later cause they told me to bring the food back because I needed them to remake it and the man was in there. So glad I finally got to try them out. Food was delicious. Although everything was fried. I didn't taste or see much grease. Everything was fried in clean oil you can tell. No burnt or browning around the edges. I was surprised by how well they battered their fillet fish. The coating is thin but just enough and fried perfectly. I like how they coat their fried chicken too. No over powering battered just a light season and thin coating for that crunch. Everything was flavorful and not over doing it. It's already fried so it was pleasant to enjoy. The portions are generous. The menu has a variety of options which I liked. I very much enjoyed my fish combo. The fish was cooked well. The jumbo shrimp was bomb! Juicy and huge. Service was nice. The lady upfront hooked us up with the sauces. So many I couldn't tell which was what. Today we had the sole and jumbo prawns with fries. The sole was fried soft as requested, and was really enjoyable! The prawns and fries were good too. Condiments included tarter sauce, vinegar, and hot sauce. The tarter sauce is like Thousand Island dressing but its ok. I wish the hot sauce was spicy hot. Its pretty mild but has a nice flavor. They have desserts that look pretty good - cake, banana pudding, etc. We didn't try any but will next time. The lady working the counter seemed very nice and efficient but didn't intervene when someone cut in line. Its a small restaurant sandwiched between other businesses inside a small outdoor strip mall, and sits back off the main street. Overall, and better experience than my last encounter. I called in my order for dinner tonight. I ordered a 3 way Combo. With Fried Sole Basa & Scallops, I also asked for the seasoned flour batter versus the corn meal batter because the corn meal batter is gritty IMO. What a difference in batter. I wished they would have a wet batter like fish & chips considering it's quite similar. Out of the fishes I chose the Sole was quite thin compared to the Basa which was a lot more meatier. The Sole was almost paper thin causing the fish to be hard IMO. The BASA doesn't disappoint and neither were the Scallops. Fries were good but a little salty this time. My overrating for JJ's is 3.5s!! Needs a little improvement here and there for me to give a better rating. read more
