Eel over sticky rice
James L.

Jin Duck House is where I only remembered to take pictures and mental notes midway through our lunch, missing the most important dish, the duck. We had a gathering here of about 10 people. The table was reserved and banquet menu items were preordered. Even though 2 people arrived late, the owner didn't seem bothered and still gave great service. The dishes were plated nicely and the portions were perfect. Their signature dish, the duck was cooked perfectly. It was seasoned well, tender and not dry like most 'duck' places. The eel over sticky rice was rich and comforting. The jellyfish had a nice kick, with a slight crunch to the bite. The beef was tender. I think the only dish that was average (but still good) was the walnut shrimp. It had big pieces of shrimp but not enough glazed walnuts. There were other dishes that I forgot about because we're too busy socializing, but remembered those were also good. We were there for at least a couple of hours and never felt rushed, even though they were a full house. The owner even thanked us all as we were walking out, with a big warm smile. Even though the ambiance isn't high end or classy, this is still a great place for a gathering or celebration. Just know that there aren't any small tables for 2. I would seriously consider Jin Duck House again for future gatherings.

Jin Duck House recently moved from City of Industry to San Gabriel , but I'm glad they've kept the same quality and standard. The food was delicious, especially the duck, and the combo set was very tasty. The service was friendly and attentive, and the new location has a nice, comfortable ambiance. Overall, a great dining experience. I'll definitely come back!

Roast duck and steam eel with sticky rice were really tasty. Have other food as well but was alright, nothing really special. This place is reservation only so keep that in mind before coming here.

Delicious Peking Duck and friendly service! We went for birthday celebration and ordered the 4 people family menu package- Peking Duck 3 ways, cold dish appetizer, French Style beef and jumbo shrimp with veggies for under $200 before T&T. The server was so nice and gave us the sweet rice ball desert for the birthday treat. The duck was so tender and we truly enjoy it , the slice duck meat with bean sprouts was light and balanced out the duck skin fat. The Duck, tofu with vermicelli soup was a perfect closing for this feast.

Rowland Height's Happy Duck House closed a year ago, and the owners have reopened under the name of Jin Duck House, at the location that once housed the popular Tasty Duck. Jin Duck House has brought back that delicious Beijing style roast duck with slices of that crispy skin with bits of fat that makes the skin really flavorful. What's a great deal is their 10-course family style dinner for 10 for $595 plus tax and tip. Aside from the Duck, you get lobster, sea cucumber, while steam (or deep fried) fish, jellyfish, eel with glutinous rice and more. It's such a great value.

Came back a 2nd time on Father's Day. I must say, each time we come we feel special, I'm not sure if it's because it's reservations only or how small and intimate the place is, but I enjoy the food so much. We got a back table due to our size exceeding 10, I think more than 10 is not a comfortable seating arrangement but we made it work. Duck was great, crispy skin and delicious sauce and pancakes. Lobster was huge, not as spicy as before which helps me a lot! Plenty of meat in the shells. My son ate a lot earlier at a potluck and ate even more here! We all had a good time, since we ordered a set menu, each dish came in sync and didn't have time to take photos as we all dug in pretty quick. Wonderful staff who came often to clear our plates and were always nearby if we needed anything. Still the best place for duck in my opinion. We got to take the duck carcass home for my dad to use for duck soup!

This restaurant was previously in the City of Industry. When it closed, I was so disappointed. Fortunately, it opens up at a much closer location. We ordered the $308 combo menu, which included everything that this restaurant is famous for. The Peking duck and the walnut shrimp are the highlights of the dish, with the eel with sticky rice as the highlight. It was delicious, and this restaurant still has the great flavor. A reservation is highly recommended, as this restaurant doesn't have many tables. The service is attentive and polite, and I will come more often.

Honestly very surprised at how stellar this place was. It is located in a very unassuming plaza. Even though we had a reservation, we still had to wait about 15 minutes for a table to be ready. As a table of 12, we got the set menu which came with a variety of dishes from vegetables to protein to soup to dessert. The duck is their speciality but I honestly think the other dishes were the real stand outs like the steamed fish, lobster noodles, and eel with sticky rice.

Fantastic spot if you're looking for authentic Beijing duck! They make the skin perfectly thick, crispy, and juicy in the inside. Paring it with their sauce and wrap gives this additional unbelievable soft and chewy bite. The duck soup and eel rice are my second favorite dishes. Beijing beef was a close third. Portions are generous and the service was attentive. Decor was nice. Looking forward to eating here again!

Interior is almost all large banquet tables plus our one four top

Leave it to my luck to show up to try this rather new-ish peking duck restaurant on the same night a party of like 30 people show up and take over more than half the restaurant and overwhelm the incredibly small staff (there were two women serving, with the female owner - I think - helping out a little). I'll warn you right now to make a reservation and not just show up. Lots of people showed up, and they were all turned away. I don't know if the place was set up especially for the huge party, but except for the four top we sat at, all the other tables were giant banquet tables. So, if this is the regular seating, good luck getting a seat for a small party without a reservation. It's located in a strip mall in San Gabriel that has been home to at least two previous important local peking duck restaurants. Parking was horrible the night we went. I think we got maybe the last spot all the way in the back of the parking lot. Since we had a reservation and had pre-ordered one duck, we were seated pretty quickly. At first the entire restaurant was empty, but that was just them setting up for the large party, I guess. Staff were friendly and attentive at first, but once the 30 people showed up all, they were swamped. I don't blame the staff. It's totally understandable. However, understanding it doesn't make the situation better when you can't wave anyone down to ask where a missing dish is or to get your check at the end. It was near impossible to get anyone's attention once they were overrun. On to the food. The peking duck was decent. It wasn't anywhere near as good as Ji Rong. The skin wasn't crispy enough and was oddly very thick. It was good but not great. Then we got the honey walnut shrimp, which I think was the best dish we had there. It was a decent if not large portion of good sized shrimp. Looks are a little deceiving, as the shrimp is piled on top of a mountain of broccoli, so it looks massive and turns out to be a fair amount but alas still an illusion. The one dish we absolutely hated, and we must warn others to avoid at all cost were the XLB dumplings. First of all, we had finished both other dishes and were sitting there forever, so we finally got the owner, hoping to cancel the missing dumplings, but she insisted they were coming. They still took awhile and are simple steamed dumplings. That was annoying, but what was disgusting was the taste of the filling. I don't know if the meat is rancid or the spices are just bizarre, but after 20 years of eating XLB in the SGV, I can honestly say I have never tasted anything like it. I don't know if I've ever had a truly terrible XLB until this night. We each tasted one and then stopped eating. We took them to go and tossed them in the trash. We prayed we wouldn't get sick, and luckily we didn't. Final thoughts: For $90 you're better off going to Ji Rong. Avoid the XLB. Make a reservation or don't show up. Will I go back? Probably not, sadly.

The elders some how discovered they have a soft opening. Real casual sit down restaurant specializing in chinese duck dishes. Staff is pretty friendly, and the dishes came out relatively fast. I think we had some sort of special treatment and got 3 different type of teas ( I feel like auntie and uncle got some sort of vip treatment.

Perfect spot for large parties. Comparable to Ji Rong across the street. The flavors were great in every dish and my family and I liked how they weren't too oily. There are only two servers but they were pretty responsive and quick.

Each time I've gone or taken food to go, I feel massively dehydrated after that I get a headache if I don't drink enough water. Luckily the staff was pretty on top of refilling our waters, and they often switched out our plates for clean ones. We've been going for years, and they used to allow substitutions for the set menu. I had the Lunch Set C menu, which came with a full table's worth of food for about 5 people for $158. The service was top tier, and the waiters were attentive but not overbearing. The atmosphere makes you feel like you're in a high end Chinese restaurant. The ambiance is dark, but each table had its own bright lighting, so it didn't feel too dark. Now for the food, here are my thoughts. Snowflake Beef with Garlic - Came in an interesting box grill, and it was perfectly cooked. Medium-rare with a slightly crispy outside and a tender, soft inside. Very flavorful. (5/5) Array 35 Signature Roast Duck - Best duck I've had. Crispy skin, and the meat was so flavorful. It came with wraps, veggies, and hoisin sauce. This is a must get. (5/5) Cold Mixed Cucumber, Century Egg, Eggplant - This is an interesting dish, but I love century egg, and this was actually amazing. No weird taste at all. (5/5) Sliced Pork with Garlic Sauce - Tender meat in a nice, spicy sauce. It's delicious. (5/5) Braised Black Cod with Potato Starch Sheets - Perfectly cooked cod, and I really enjoyed the potato noodles. So good and flavorful. (5/5) Seasonal Steamed Dimsum - This was a veggie bao, and it was so good, especially for being vegetarian. (4.5/5) Homemade Shrimp Paste with Hotpot - A simple dish, but the flavors were good. It came in a steaming pot that kept everything warm. Delicious. (4.5/5) Stir Fried Seasonal Veggies - These were stir fried string beans, and they were good. Perfectly cooked and seasoned well. (4.5/5) Snow Fungus Pear Soup - A nice dessert that comes with the set. It came with 5 bowls and was super refreshing and tasty. (5/5) Normally, I have something to say about the food, but everything here was absolutely delicious. Yes, it's a pricey experience, but the ambiance, food, and service make it worth it for special occasions. Parking - They share a lot, which was pretty plentiful when I visited.

Given that this place is definitely on the higher end in terms of price, I was expecting the dishes to be a little more unique and exquisite. Peking Duck - 6/10 Pretty standard. The duck skin was crispy and fatty, which was good, but the actual meat was a little dry. The wrapper was okay, but nothing particularly memorable. Crispy Walnut Shrimp - 8/10 By far the best dish of the meal. The shrimp was lightly battered but incredibly crispy, and the walnuts were excellent and complemented the shrimp really well. The sweet melon was questionable, though. I couldn't quite understand the appeal of adding fruit to this dish. Kurobuta Pork Xiao Long Bao - 7/10 The filling was definitely up there in terms of flavor and quality, but the wrapper was far too thick for my liking. A thinner wrapper would have made a big difference. Seared Honey Glazed Cod - 5/10 Unfortunately, this was my least favorite. The fish was very fishy, the sear wasn't particularly impressive, and the sauce didn't pair well with the cod. There were also chestnuts and what I believe were shallots, neither of which I really cared for. Overall, it's a beautiful establishment with great service and very impressive presentation. Unfortunately, the flavors didn't quite match the appearance or the price point for me. The Crispy Walnut Shrimp was the standout, but the other dishes were more average than I expected.

There are a few Canto cafés around here, but this one is definitely one of our favorites. Dim sum is pretty easy to find, but authentic Cantonese cafés are much more of a rare find. The lower reviews are probably due to the service, but in my opinion, a truly authentic Cantonese restaurant should have questionable service because that's exactly what you get at the good places in Hong Kong. The philosophy in Hong Kong is basically "food over service." If they're being too nice, they're probably overcompensating for something haha. Getting either the hot or iced milk tea or lemon tea is a MUST. It's the traditional way to do it, and they even offer unlimited refills! Just be warned that you might not sleep that night because Hong Kong-style tea is no joke when it comes to caffeine. Pro tip: If you get the lemon tea, you have to crush the lemons into the tea to get the right flavor! My friends and I are regulars here. They're open late, and the ambiance is so fun, with tables decorated with mahjong tiles and neon lights that basically scream Asia. The food is top tier and, in my opinion, some of the best Cantonese food you'll find in the U.S. Our go-to orders are the tomato baked rice dishes, stir-fried vegetables, 3-cup dishes, and brisket curries. For something sweet, we always share the classic Cantonese French toast with peanut butter inside or one of the pineapple buns. Definitely recommend coming here if you're looking for an authentic Canto café experience! :)
