I have challenging canyon rim property in Kensington with just about every kind of landscape-maintenance issue you can imagine. The canyon is steep, and I have a variety of trees in front and back that require periodic pruning and constant cleanup. The Ficus are the worst, dropping leaves and berries most of the year. I also have a long balcony, terrace and second-floor patio to be maintained. Furthermore, I just completed a two-year major remodel of my house which meant re-establishing my front yard after tons of construction debris was removed. We hired JH to do a front yard project. It took us couple months from getting quotes, establishing design, and selecting a contractor. Hector and Jairo gave us the best price for full demo, retaining wall, fence, paver, turf, and putting green install. I vetted and received quotes from 7 different landscape companies based on an architectural drawing I had created. It comprised demo & removal of my existing yard (plants and dirt and rock n' things) plus the creation of my new oasis which included grading, custom borders, a grey stone paver path and secluded patio, custom made trellises, irrigation, drainage and Arizona river rock. The quote I received included labor and soil for planting. The plants were selected and purchased by me but JH organized the logistics. The only 'shopping' I had to endure was to a nursery to choose plants based on my drawing and got some really good input from the guys at JH Landscaping. The work was carried out in a timely manner. The foreman who supervised the project along with his crew arrived every day until completion and finished the project on time. They were courteous and left my property 'in order' every day when they left. They even had their own porta potty on sight throughout the duration of the project. At the end of the project I extended my project plans and had them do some custom wood work on and around my front and back porch which included new floors, railing and stairs. I used Yelp request for some ponding of water in my backyard and help with a tree. J&H responded quickly and came that same day to evaluate the issues and provide a quote. They started work the next day and showed up on time. They installed drainage to the street in the problem area, replaced mulch with rock to keep the mulch from clogging up the drains, and connected gutter downspouts to the drain lines out to the street. We're very happy we found JH Landscaping and would recommend their team. After getting quotes from 2 companies, we hired them to do a patio landscaping project that included curved retaining walls, a paver circle, a pathway, and a stone staircase built between two boulders. The whole project was very custom, with many curved angles and oddly shaped spaces. Jairo and Hector were very patient talking through the options for the space with us, and we appreciated that they honored the verbal quotes they originally provided. Their crew worked really hard digging, jackhammering, and carrying and cutting heavy stone bricks, for about a week. They did their best to protect our existing landscaping from all the foot traffic, and were happy to replace a few small plants that became casualties of the project. We discussed the design at a couple points during the process, and they were accommodating of our ideas even if they were a bit different from the original understanding. The team took a few small creative liberties that we didn't expect, but they were all in good taste so it wasn't a problem. On the last day they spent a good amount of time cleaning up and even planted some extra flowers at no charge to finish off the space. Overall we are very happy with the finished result and had a good experience with JH! What was once a weed-covered dirt hill is now a beautiful space we use everyday. I so appreciate the help I received from J&H with my backyard drain issues. My drain issues were under my hardscape. Hector scheduled my project within a week of our first contact. He and his crew arrived on time. I had originally engaged a drain company to come out to clear the drains and they were unable clear the heavy roots and debris in the drains under the hardscape. Yikes! Hector's team took the time to review the complete drain flow (in an effort to avoid cutting the hardscape). In one area they were able to clear the drain without cutting the hardscape. However, I wasn't so lucky in the second drain. After exhausting all options, it was clear the second drain required cutting the hardscape. Before cutting, Hector discussed with me how to best preserve the patio aesthetic. He took the time to give me options for the finish product (I loved that!). He and his team made the cut, repair the drain and adjusted the slope of the drain to enhance the drain flow. Then he replace the concrete making an assertive effort to match the existing concrete color. Hector and his team did a great job. His workers were kind, engaging and pleasant to work with. It was a pleasure working with a company that listened to my concerns and made my project their project. They started with a big demo job to get rid of the old grass and over grown bushes and broken concrete driveway. The yard was very sloped before and they leveled it all out by building the wall along the street making a huge area of our yard more spacious and usable. Our backyard needed a major overhaul (drainage, irrigation, pavers, wall, artificial turf, fence, gas firepit, trees/trimming, hill clearing, etc.), and most bids we received exceeded our budget. We figured we'd have to do a section at a time. We heard about J & H from neighbors who offered rave reviews on Nextdoor and Yelp, and decided to get one more bid. Hector and Jairo came out the same day after finishing up another job (a plus compared to others we called). These guys gave a good vibe right off the bat. Very sincere, honest, and nice guys. I took them around the entire yard, pointing out the dozens of things we wanted to change. I figured after overloading their brains that it would take a long time for them to work up a quote and get back to me, but they pulled out tape measures, calculators, and materials books (to pick pavers, stones, turf, etc.) and priced it on the spot! The quote was very reasonable... better than any of the others. They gave us references, and locations to check out their work. After scoping out their other projects, we decided to do the whole thing at once since Hector said he could give us a better deal doing it all in one shot. He was able to start very soon after we gave the thumbs up. His guys were very professional, hardworking, and competent. Even when we tweaked plans slightly as the yard started to take shape, they were very responsive and made it work perfectly. So I found Hector on yelp and considering the photos and the reviews I got my hopes a little too high. Don't get me wrong, I got what I paid for. Their price was nearly a third of other quotes I got. The driveway itself looks fantastic, they did a great job. The problem lies with cleanliness. After they laid the driveway, they left an upside down wheel barrow in a part of my yard that I was clearing to lay mulch. I moved the wheel barrow and found a huge pile of cured concrete. I spent an hour breaking it apart, putting it into the wheel barrow. On Monday they came to remove the support boards and clean up. When I walked outside a bit after they started, I noticed they had literally dumped everything that was in the wheel barrow on to my grass. I asked if they were going to pick it up, one of his employees says yes. I work nights, so I went back inside to take a quick nap before work and when I came out to check the yard out it looked like they realized it was going to take too long to finish cleaning and just stopped. There are still support boards on the side of the driveway, there's still a huge mess of concrete where they dumped what I cleaned. There's also some kind of cement sludge they dumped in the alley behind my house that's leaking through my fence. On top of all this, there has been no communication from Hector. I texted him pictures asking if he thought this was acceptable, no response. Why would he? He's already been paid in full. Like I said, they did a good job with the drive way. You can't beat his price, I got a 1000+ sq ft driveway for under 7k. I definitely got what I paid fIf you can deal with cleaning up after them, I say go for it, he'll definitely get it done. Edit: I've changed my review to 2 stars. They removed the boards on the side of the driveway, but left the wheelbarrow full of concrete debris next to my fence IN THE MIDDLE OF THE YARD. I spent an hour cleaning up this concrete when they dumped it in my yard the first time. I filled up the wheel barrow they left with it. When they came to "clean" they literally dumped the wheel barrow next to my fence. I'm in the middle of cleaning it and it is a HUGE PAIN IN THE ASS. read more

I don't normally write reviews but feeling compelled to write one and waited until they fixed some issues. We hired Hector and Jairo in the latter part of Aug 2021and they did a great job on our backyard pavers and turf. The only downside of this review is their response rate. If you need to reach them, make sure both parties are clear and understand what you've agreed upon prior to starting the project. While the project is ongoing, I suggest to ensure to follow-up multiple times and check their work regularly. Imagine their response rate when the project/final payment was complete and had it done during peak season? I understand there'll be areas to fix and/or correct, but it's nice to inform us when they're coming versus having to follow-up SEVERAL times. That is plain customer service standard. Also, I recommended them to my sister who resides next door and she too had issues but not sure if they were able to fix after multiple follow-ups. To summarize, I would still recommend them and appreciate their work but be prepared with their low response rate. They offered us a fair price within our budget for our project, they arrived when they said they would, and stayed until it was completed over several days. They cleaned up their worksite and left no trace, especially important because they worked adjacent to a canyon. Being an engineer myself, I saw the quality of the retaining keystone gravity wall design & work was excellent, and addressed our erosion issue. When final payment was due, we wrote our check for the wrong amount, substantially more than was due. The next day Hector knocked on our door, check in hand, though we had not realized our mistake!
