    Terrible cold chicken

A Culinary Adventure I'll Never Forget (No Matter How Hard I Try) Oh, where do I even begin with Tarentum Station? Actually, let me start by saying that if you've ever wondered what it's like to pay good money for a truly spectacular display of incompetence, this is your place. We walked in with such hope. Such naive, foolish hope. Twenty minutes later, we were still hoping... for our drinks. Yes, you read that right. Twenty minutes to get a beverage order taken. I can only assume our waitress was training for some kind of Olympic speed-walking event, because she was certainly rushing around the restaurant like her life depended on it. Attending to us? Not so much. She had the frantic energy of someone who'd had six espressos but the attention span of a goldfish. When the French onion soup finally arrived (and by "finally" I mean after we'd aged approximately seven years), I took one spoonful and immediately understood what dishwater must taste like. Not that I make a habit of sampling cleaning products, but now I don't have to. The kitchen at Tarentum Station has thoughtfully recreated the experience for me. I'm not sure what they did to that soup, but "onion" and "French" seemed like purely theoretical concepts in whatever that liquid was. Two hours. Let me repeat that. TWO HOURS for our entrees to arrive. I've had shorter dental procedures. At this point, we were so hungry we probably would have eaten the menus. When the food finally graced our table, it was cold. Ice cold. Room temperature if the room was a meat locker. We sent it back, naturally, because we're optimists. It returned... still cold. Apparently "reheat" means something different in their kitchen. Maybe they just waved it near the stove and hoped for the best? And the taste? Oh, the taste was the grand finale of this disaster symphony. If the temperature had been the only problem, we might have survived. But no, the food itself was aggressively bad. The kind of bad that makes you question whether the chef has ever actually eaten food before, or if they're just working from a vague description someone gave them once. The service was somehow even worse than the food, which is really saying something. Our waitress appeared to be everywhere and nowhere simultaneously, like some kind of unhelpful quantum particle. Do yourself a favor: if you're near Tarentum Station and you're hungry, keep driving. Order pizza. Make a sandwich. Forage for berries in the woods. Literally anything would be a better use of your time and money than eating here. Zero stars. Would give negative stars if possible.

Daily Special of Chicken Caesar on a croissant. Terrific tasty battered fries.
    Widgie C.

Over the years I have eaten here numerous times. I usually get the grilled chicken salad. This time I had the special which was chicken Caesar on a croissant. It was okay. My husband had the chicken Caesar as a wrap. The Caesar part tasted like yesterday's Caesar salad because it had croutons in it and was mushy. Our service was good. The atmosphere hasn't changed in years but it's a cool old train station.

We were warmly greeted by Todd and Gina, the owners, who couldn't have been friendlier. Todd told us all about their wines, including the awards they've won, especially in California, and generously offered us the chance to try any of the wines at no cost. We started with the Gruner Veltliner, a bright, citrusy, and crisp wine. It was extremely dry compared to other Gruners we've had, which are usually more fruit-forward, but it was still quite enjoyable. Next, we tried the Riesling, which was also very good. My wife moved over to the semi-sweet side and tried the Traminette, which I eventually sampled after trying all the dry wines. We both really liked it. I then tried the Cabernet Franc, which was a medium-bodied wine with notes of raspberry, blueberry, and a light mocha oakiness--delicious! The Chambourcin was also quite good, without the typical bite or tartness. Lastly, the Flagship Red, a classic Bordeaux-style dry red, had a pleasant hint of pepper and was definitely a standout. Todd shared that they exclusively offer wines from Stony Run Vineyards in Breinigsville, PA, which has a wide selection. They're also planning to offer Old Fashioneds soon, as their winery includes a distillery, and they'll be featuring a "drink of the week" as well. What really sets this place apart, though, is Todd and Gina themselves. They're genuinely kind people who are dedicated to the community, and it was heartwarming to learn that they both served in the US Military--Todd in the Navy and Gina in the Air Force. We're already looking forward to our next visit when we're in the area again. Don't forget to thank them for their service when you stop by!

It sells a variety of dry and sweet wines (e.g., red, white, rose, sparkling, and cider), cocktails, mocktails, and beers. Some vineyards are on the grounds as are many barrels and bottles of wines. The restaurant has both indoor seating and seasonal outdoor seating in lakeside cabanas and winter igloos. It is open for brunch/lunch and dinner. It is a nice setting for daily dining as well as special events such as weddings, bridal and baby showers, and private parties. Furthermore, the website lists activities such as bingo, painting and candle-making classes, live music with dancing, and more. For my husband and me, I made a reservation for lunch in an igloo. Our igloo was large enough to fit eight people and cost $50 plus foods and drinks. A larger "party dome" fits up to 14 people and has a fee of $75. The temperatures outside were very cold, but our igloo was kept warm by an electric fireplace and a zippered door. Throughout our meal, our waitress provided timely and friendly service. The Bistro menu listed shareables (e.g., pretzel sticks and charcuterie board), several smash burgers, several flatbreads, mains (e.g., fish and chips, cajun chicken pasta, and quinoa bowl), several salads, several handhelds (e.g., turkey melt, veggie wrap, and Italian panini), many sides, and a couple of desserts. Prices were moderate. (The menus for Sunday Brunch and a group Gathering differ.) The waitress first brought our Sweet Wine-Cookie Flight (4.5 stars), which consisted of the following pairs: Diamond Reo with Brown Sugar Pop Tart, Sweet Finley with Chocolate Salted Caramel, Riesling with Cookies and Cream, and Rose Cider with Strawberry Crunch. The wine glasses came in a wooden box, which was slightly too small, so I needed several minutes of time to carefully pull each wine glass out of the box. I, however, did enjoy the sweet flavors of the wines and cookies. Next our waitress brought out our shareable and two mains. The Hummus Plate (4.5 stars) consisted of fresh and tasty hummus, feta, olives, top seedz crackers, tomatoes, cucumbers, green and red peppers, carrots, celery, and tzatziki. My main course was Crab Cakes (4 stars) with a substituted side of salad. Two crab cakes were a decent size of 4 ounces each, but I would have preferred more crab meat. I liked the garlic aioli. My husband's main course was the Cali Burger (4 stars) with a side of fries. In a brioche bun, a beef patty was topped with fontina cheese, applewood-smoked bacon (which he would prefer be crispier), avocado, avocado ranch, lettuce, and pickles (which he commented were nicely crunchy and sweet-sour) (no tomato at his request). The total price for the flight, shareable, two mains, and a soda was $98 plus sales tax and tip (plus the earlier $50 fee for the igloo).

As the previous reviewer noted, many of these wines are on the sweet side, which is actually perfect for my husband and me. The wines come from a family-owned winery in Erie. The bottles were stored on many shelves for viewing and shopping. I chose the Concord wine. The employee gave me a small sample to taste-test, and I liked it, so we bought a bottle. The price was $14. The employee thanked me. Indoor and outdoor seating are available, but we did not use it. At home I drank more of this Concord wine, and I do enjoy its flavor. I would be willing to return to this wine store in the future to purchase additional bottles of wines in different flavors.

The breads were really good and fresh, we really like the non-white bread. It was different but very good! We had ravioli, fettuccini Alfredo and 2 of the specials off of the early bird menu (the salmon salad and the pork chop). We enjoyed all of our food. The red sauce is really good! My salad was huge, I was able to bring a nice portion home. My husband said the rice with the pork chop was terrible but he really enjoyed the salad and pork chop. Our waitress was a little dry and not super friendly. She did forgot 2 of the soups we had ordered but offered to pack them to go or give us dessert, our kids opted for the dessert and both tried the cannolis (which were very disappointing). We weren't a fan at all and we all love cannolis. She did however send the soups home with us too (but one was not the soup ordered). Anyways it was a nice gesture. The building itself is an older building with nice woodwork and details. The crowd was definitely on the older side but we did dine in early. Overall good food, a little more on the formal side. The simplified elegance is also accompanied by the hospitality of the staff. Warm welcomes and greeting each customer as if they are a regular creates an atmosphere that you want to be in for every meal... and you didn't even eat yet. The menu has plenty of options, but I asking for suggestions... the staff can help you to find those hidden gems of Oakmont. The fried zucchini appetizer is not your normal bread crumbed planks- but a pillowy tempura batter that is cleverly aired to avoid sogginess with their plating technique. I would highly suggest grabbing this as an app. The bread service is already fresh and delicious... but the secret sauce... ask your waiter for the dip. Yes, it now costs a little extra. But oh my word.... It is worth every scent. The Blackenzola is worth the creative name and topping! The gorgonzola is fresh and adds such a delicious crust with the balsamic glaze on top of their filet mignon. The chef cooks the meat to perfection and it is a great meal. The green beans are a great vegetable option. The mashed potatoes make sense to be a Chef's Choice. The piping on the plate is beautiful - and they are smooth and creamy! After eating such good food, you have to say yes to just see the Dessert menu... and the tiramisu was calling my name. They give you a large portion and you can taste the freshness of this decadent dessert. All in all, Hoffstot's is a place that you will feel welcome, you will want to come back, and they will probably remember you.. or at least make you feel like part of the family.
