I was mocked and dismissed because I asked for paprika and extra olive oil. I would not suggest this establishment for any traveling person for it seems as if they don't want outside visitors patronizing their establishment. We had lunch at Jerusalem Restaurant in Peoria a few weeks ago when we were in town on our way to Macomb. I'm so glad we stopped by. The food was all excellent. We had the hummus with beef shawarma, foul, and falafel. Everything down to the amount of sumac on everything, the sauces (tahina, toum, and 2 hot sauces - one green, one red)...love. The service was also amazing. The only man there when we visited - he cooked our food, brought our food out to us, took our order, checked on us (at least twice)...he did everything (owner/chef?)! He was lovely, and he made it feel like we were eating at home! My only teeny tiny complaint that in no way affected the fact that I loved Jerusalem Restaurant is that the shawarma beef had some pieces that were tough to chew (I thought maybe not trimmed well and we got some large sinew or tendon pieces?). But other than that tiny complaint, I thought the meal was delicious. And the service just as good! The place isn't fancy, but it's clean and casual and comfortable. I came here to interview and this was the place that was open latest. I ordered the combo platters and some side salads. The kabobs were great! Meat was fresh and well seasoned and they had it all ready for me in about 15 min to closing, I got bread and hummus on the side. Found this little gem of a restaurant on a business trip to Peoria. As an Arab American, I was raised on this food, so I am very picky. I had the most wonderful meal at this "dad and son" spot! The combination platter had succulent meats, a bright and fresh little salad, the most lemony hummus and three different sauces and the freshest pita bread. I was in town and yelp suggested checking this place out, so I did. Being a fan of Mediterranean food, I was very excited. The place was quite packed, which evidently is abnormal according to the staff. The place's claim to fame is the attentiveness of the staff, which was clearly still there despite the busy day. I'm a big shawarma fan, so I started with the mixed shawarma plate. The beef shawarma was awesome but the portion was a bit underwhelming and the pita bread wasn't warm. However, the hummus we ordered was phenomenal, far better than most other places in IL. My girlfriend ordered the shawarma sandwich and this sandwich was nothing short of spectacular. The 2 desserts they had were also on point, especially the baklava, which is real baklava (much like the ones I had while staying in Israel) and not the syrupy, sticky baklava 99% of the other places make. How have I not reviewed this place?!! Total oversight I am correcting now. It would not be an exaggeration to tell you to stop what you are doing and go to Jerusalem. Let's allow for a moment of reverent appreciation. The white garlic one - heavenly. The red one - it's like a flavor explosion. And the green one brings such a freshness. The only downside is there is never enough. One thing you should know about me is I'm not really a dessert person. I like dessert but I'm not one of those people who has to have it. Unless I'm at Jerusalem and then I will either eat myself sick or I will take it to go, writing death threats on the container to the family member who even THINKS about eating it. That shawarma tho -I swear, I can hear the angels singing while I eat it. It's that good. We get the beef and chicken combo which is served with pita and a little salad, hummus and rice. The portion is quite big. I nearly always have leftovers (yay! Bonus meal!). Nice grilled pieces of chicken and beef which you can top with those outrageously good sauces, and it's served over a bed of rice that is soaking up any juices. Yuuuuuuuuum. My daughter has ordered the lamb special, which she graciously allowed me to taste and that is excellent as well. Thought i would jump on the bandwagon and give this place 5 stars. Walked in and immediately could smell heaven. The owners (wife and husband team) approached the order window as I did recognizing that it was my first time. After asking what I liked, I explained that I spent some time in Turkey so they could basically feed me anything. The wife suggested the lamb chops for me which is their specialty and then for the boyfriend she suggested the schawarma. While the husband threw it down in the kitchen, his wife and I chatted about worldly issues and I felt right at home in their restaurant. Before I could even get done blabbing my mouth, my food was ready and the wife also gave me a free piece of baklava to remind me of Turkey. Probably some of the best food and service we have had in a long time. The staff I would assume are father and son and they were very friendly and helpful when we were ordering for our first time. Not only did they offer great suggestions when we went to pay our bill he was made sure we were 100% satisfied with our visit. Once he found out it was our first time there he offered us a free slice of sweet cake. The prices were reasonable and the food was very fresh and bursting with flavor. Our party of nine called to see if they had tables available...we didn't make a reservation...But by the time we arrived, they had a table all set up for us. It is indeed no frills with a small dining room and simple decorations, but we were there for the food. It did not disappoint! Throughout the group, we ordered a lot of shawarma, skewers, falafel...nothing was less than amazing! The hummus was perfect, and even the fries were well above average.
