My husband and I were looking for breakfast and found it at Childer's Eatery. This looks like your traditional cafe on the inside. I had the caramel apple churro waffle. The waffle was crispy and they used real fruit. My husband had the brioche French toast. The French toast was loaded with fresh strawberries, bananas, and pecans. I had really high expectations for this place and unfortunately they fell flat for me. To start with the good, we got the immunity juice and that was amazing, our waitress was also very nice! Unfortunately this location didn't have alcohol, which was not what we were expecting but also wasn't the end of the world. I got the best breakfast in Peoria and it also fell flat for me, the biscuits and gravy had a weird taste to them and the hasbrown and eggs have virtually no flavor. The sausage patties were really good though! My friend got the avocado toast, and it's not a mash, it was just a few slices on a piece of toast, which normally wouldn't be a huge deal except the avocado wasn't ripe so it was really hard to then mash down on to the toast. I don't know that I would go back to a Childers eatery and if I did I may not come to this one. The menu items looked soooo good and I was just a little disappointed in the food itself. read more

I was in for lunch yestready and I had the club sandwich and fries. I really enjoyed the fresh spring greens with that homemade vinaigrette!! We decided to try this restaurant and we were not disappointed! The food is amazing! The gravy to the biscuits and gravy is very flavorful! The shrimp and grits have shaved Parmesan which takes it to another level. It will definitely be my new breakfast place when I'm in town. We had pretty good service while there, no complaints. Inside has a decent amount of seating. The noise level was low compared to other restaurants I've been too, which I liked. I ordered gluten free pancakes for my wife, to go. This was 1/14/26, University location. Luckily she isn't Celiac, but just IBS on a FODMAP diet, and terrible self control. On one hand their fully leven/risen pancakes are huge and fluffy, on the other, they definitely ignore the GF tag. I moved here by myself a month ahead of my family in 2021. I spent my weekends taking myself out to brunches and this place was an INSTANT favorite. I was on meds that made me nauseous and my appetite was terrible, but here I get a half order of biscuits and gravy with a side of the greens and lemon vinegarette, plus some coffee, and it is just the best! When my family got into town, we started making it a regular weekend tradition and every single one of us loves everything we've had to eat or drink here and at the other locations. I ordered breakfast to go from Childer's in Junction City. This is the last time I'll go to this restaurant. They forgot to give me the fresh juice I ordered and I had to ask for it. She said it wasn't shown on the ticket, however I paid for it and it showed up in my order confirmation. Then brought me a different juice claiming to be out of the one I ordered. It wasn't bad but it wasn't what I ordered and if it's juiced fresh to order, why didn't they just juice more? When I opened the carton to eat, I found toast that couldn't have been any blacker and burnt on one side if they had tried on purpose. I can't believe someone thought it was Ok to put that toast in my order! If they don't think anything of giving me food that is bad to the eye, it makes a person wonder what bad food they would be willing to give you when you can't actually tell it's bad. Food not stored properly, old and expired, is the kitchen clean, do the cooks wash their hands after using the restroom, do they pick food up off the floor when dropped? It really makes me wonder!? Have eaten there 3 times and each time the food has been lacking. Last visit had the breaded tenderloin, or more accurately the fried 2x4 plank! The most disgusting sandwich I have ever seen. The bacon was a bit undercooked and the eggs were blah. The biscuits and gravy were okay, but the white cheddar of the biscuits overpowered everything else. Eight of us went to Childer's on a Sunday morning after the Bradley graduation. They were pretty busy but still managed to get us seated. Overall most of our party was pretty satisfied with their offerings. I had the "Food Coma" which was hash browns, eggs (I chose scrambled) and a fairly large pounded flat breaded pork tenderloin with sausage gravy. Eggs were fine, hash browns were average, the pork was pretty good. I wish I could share our waitress's name as she was cheerful and energetic. My rating would likely be three stars, but she is what boosted it to four. Now, here's the catch on this review. Some in our party noted that the kitchen was cranking - it was putting out a lot of food, but frankly it was slow to come our way. There was a party of five that sat next to us after we arrived - they got their food before we did and were long gone before we were done. Menus had been dropped on their table so there was no evidence that they pre-ordered. We weren't in a hurry, so thankfully the slow order wasn't an issue. My mom and I decided to try Childers out because we are currently assisting my sister with wedding planning and she had selected Childers to be her caterer. Our first impression was that this place is a little on the small side. We also ended up waiting quite a bit, first at the door and again after we were seated. The place was very busy. We were definitely pleased with the menu. My sister is vegetarian and there were several vegetarian-friendly items. Even I was interested in trying a few of them. We ended up getting french toast (I think) and a frittata with steak. Everything we had tasted amazing, but freshly squeezed juice was a little pricey, glad we also got water. Our waitress was very friendly, but obviously had several tables to take care of. She was constantly rushing from table to table and seemed a little flustered. We did notice a table or two that had been seated after we got their food and drinks before we did. Sunday morning breakfast is always a challenge, balancing when Sunday services are finished and good places to eat. We tried Childers on University at 9:30. The parking was nearly full, but we found a spot. There was no wait and we were promptly seated. Our friends were a bit later than we were, so we ordered four coffees and waters. We got water right away, but had to wait a few minutes for coffee because they were brewing another pot. The four cups came in a few minutes, and a warming carafe gave us each another cup. The breakfast menu is extensive with vegan and eggless options. We all had eggs, hash browns, bacon, and toast. My brother got an omelette with hash browns. I love their French toast, Belgian waffles, and eggs Benedict, too, but after Saturday night, my tummy was a bit weak. The food came very quickly and was hot and well prepared. Our waitress checked on us a couple times for water and coffee refills. We lingered over coffee for a bit, but the place was never fully packed, just constantly busy. For around $60 for meals for four, the price was very reasonable. As a long time Peoria staple, I can still highly recommend Childers on University! read more

Came here because we missed the hotel's breakfast spread. You seat yourself so my son and I took a booth. My son got a cup of water in a kid's cup when the server brought my glass which was nice. Overall place looked clean but i touched old gum under the table when I moved it. Kid got a grilled cheese. I got the Brown Buttered Shrimp Roll and a side of fried green tomatoes with coffee. I drink my coffee black and this was smooth. When we were leaving the server asked if I wanted a cup to go- kind of wish I had taken her up on it. The grilled cheese was standard- my son ate it. But all the food comes on a bed of mixed greens and this weirded him out and he wouldn't touch the fries. My roll was ok. I felt like it could have used more more of the shrimp mixture or a smaller roll. Less greens. The roll overpowered it. Loved the fried green tomatoes. I don't think our order was complex but it took awhile to come out. I could hear the wait staff talking with the kitchen staff about orders they still needed or had been waiting on. Our server was sweet but she disappeared after bringing a container. To the point I was looking around and could not see her. When she reappeared it was apparent she had gone outside for a smoke. Now, hear me when I say, far be it from me to begrudge her a smoke break. I'm a former smoker. I get it. But she came in with melted snow on her hair and clothes and smelled of smoke. I don't work in food service or in face to face contact with the public but I used to return from break and wash my hands, put on some lotion, and chew some gum. Looked forward to a delicious lunch of harissa shakshuka after an absence of several months following twice having inedible salads. Can't get this dish anywhere else that I know of in Peoria IL. Server asked how I wanted the eggs & I pointed out they are listed as "poached". She was new & using an updated ordering app so, no problem. I told her the soft yolks really make the dish by blending with the spiced stew. Arrived with rock hard yolks and the juicy stew was so overcooked there was no savory juice left.
